The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX

Review by Squalldaman

"Lots of chicken smacking, dog fwappin' fun!."

When LoZ: LA came out 7 years ago, it was a great game then. Nintendo remade it for the Gameboy Color a few years ago, and it's even better. The classic that we all loved was now brighter, had more stuff, and a cooler look.

Control: 10/10
The control is simple, move in all directions, and two buttons for using stuff. The Gameboy controller is suited to do this well, as you can even use two weapons at the same time (i.e the bomb and the arrow to make the rocket launcher, or the chicken, the grabber, and the boomerang). When you get the jumping feature, it works well to easily switch back and forth to jump and attack. Shields work well too, as they come out with no delay, and you block. Very nice when facing a lot of enemies.

Gameplay: 10/10
Man, the gameplay is great. Zelda DX has the old traditional system of collecting items, assigning them to different buttons, and destroying enemies. You can jump, fire fireballs, hack, guard, play, and much more. You can do all sorts of funny stuff by getting your photos taken, rustling up the chickens, and destroying parts of the library. Link can do almost anything as long as the opportunity is there. You can get heart pieces, fish, take photos, swim, run really fast, trade items, and even more. You can even go to new secret dungeons and do stuff. Zelda DX introduced a new, innovative system of playing to the Color Gameboy games.

Sound: 6/10
The music is nothing to marvel over, as is usually the case with the Gameboy games. All it sounds like is ''Beep beep beeeep, beedo beedo beeeeep!'' for like 20 minutes. And trust me, you don't want to hear that same style of beeping forever. Do yourself a favor and turn the sound off, it's much better for you and the people around.

Graphics: 10/10
The graphics are as good as Gameboy graphics get. As with the Color Gameboy, everything is colored, and all the scenery is vividly colored to see upon easily. No straining to see where Link is. The graphics have no visible pixels, and move smoothly, not in blocky movements. Definitely some of the best graphics for any Gameboy game out so far.

Replay Value: 5/10
Once you beat it, you've kind of beaten it. Still, you can always go back and try to get all the Heart pieces, or get all the photos. That's pretty much about it.

Story: 10/10
Link doesn't know where he is. Therefore, you must help him find out where he is, and uncover the secrets of the island. Very nice.

Overall: 9/10
Link's Awakening is one of the best games out there for the Gameboy Color right now. I'd recommend it to anyone who has a Gameboy, because it truly is a classic for the ages. This game was a sign that the Zelda series wouldn't fail, and that seems to be true.
