Revelations: The Demon Slayer
Review by Walker Boh Ohmsford
"Pokemon, but not as complicated and with better music!"
Revelations: The Demon Slayer is one of those Pokemon spinoffs that seems to me to be far less difficult to understand and it actually has a more intriguing story. I don't want to offend any Pokemon fans out there who might read this, but I have never understood Pokemon and have no real interest in it. I never understood it and I wouldn't be a very patient student if ya tried to teach me. I just don't have much interest in it. Anyway, Revelations is part of what's referred to as the Last Bible series in Japan, but it's the only installment that was released in the US. Last Bible? Huh? I don't think so. The world in Revelations makes no reference to and doesn't share any similarities to our world, nor does its religion. Well..Once again I'm rambling. Onto the review.
Control 10-10. A bit sluggish at times, but I liked it. It was easy to learn and quite reliable. It kinda reminded me of Lufia I's controls, because while on the game screen, if you pressed B it would bring up the menu. Now why's that? You could just as easily press either Start or Select. Oh well, guess they wanted to make the menu as easily accessible as possible.
Audio 10-10. True, I've heard better music in the Final Fantasy series, but this game has an excellent musical score. I haven't even heard all the music and I'm giving it a 10. It's definitely better than Pokemon. Now there's a series with little if any variety in its music! The sound effects are basic but cool. You have your attack sounds and your everyday sounds. If only this game had a sound test.
Fun Factor 10-10. Here's where this game's gameplay coincides with Pokemon slightly. You don't have to do this to complete the game, but you have the option of recruiting monsters to fight on your side, and yes, ya get to keep 'em! Like the Pokemon series, you will have a stock of monsters to draw upon for aid, and you will also have a kind of bank where you can put extra stuff ya don't wanna carry around. I don't know if you can do that with monsters, but ya can try. The cool part is that you don't catch the monster in a Pokeball. When a monster appears, you have the option of talking to it. If you choose this, the monster will ask you several Yes/No questions. Depending both on the personality of the monster and how you answer, you will either persuade the monster to join you or have to try again. Monsters that lean more toward healing tend to be kindly beings, while the ones who attack most tend to be mean-spirited. Choose your answers carefully. Also, another Pokemon trait is that there's a Versus mode where you can confront a friend who has a GBC and a copy of Revelations and a link cable between you. Each of you will choose which monsters you want to use and fight it out in five intense rounds. I've never played it this way myself, (I just got the game a couple weeks ago), but if you have the right or wrong monsters it's gonna be one tough fight! And yes, you can even train the four main bosses of the game to fight on your side in the Versus mode!
Rent/buy? Yeah! It's a good game and RPG and Pokemon fans alike might find it quite entertaining, since even though the game itself is quite short compared to most RPG's, there's a lot of fun involved in searching the world to get as many monsters to join you as possible.
Story 7-10. Save the world from the Gaia Masters turned bad. You play the role of El, a student of the Gaia power. Now who came up with the name here? El? What kind of a name is that? Well..At least ya can change it. You have two friends, Kishe and Uranus, whose names can also be changed, thank god. You also have whatever monsters you decide to recruit. It's up to you to save the world from disaster.
