Dragon Warrior III
Review by Geo.
"A revamped version of a classic RPG."
If anybody remembers long long time ago, when it was the ol' NES days, there came a great RPG series from ENIX, it was called Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest in japan). It was one of the greatest turn base RPGs back then and I'll never forget it. Enix then brought the series to the SNES and revamped it... then they brought Dragon Warrior I & II to the GBC. And now, they decide to bring the remix snes version of Dragon Warrior III to the GBC.
Graphics - 9
if you compare the NES graphics to the GBC version, the GBC version is better. I have never seen the SNES version though so I cannot compare (even though I get this feeling the SNES version looks a wee more better). The details between the GBC and NES version are very noticable. Most of the graphics are more detailed and colourful (yay!). Also the monsters finally have animation to them which gives it a better look.
Music/Sound - 9
The sound and music in this game are great. Some tunes can sometimes be catchy, happy, peaceful, or etc. I can't remember most of the music from the NES version, but I was told it's a good conversion of it.
Control - 10
The Controls are the most simplest thing in this game. If you played Dragon Warrior I & II then the controls should come back flooding back to you. the A button is the choosing button, B button is the cancel/menu button, and the Start button is quick save (it saves any where).
Also new to this game is the use of the select button, which can come very useful. The Select button is the memorizing button. If you talk to someone and they say someing very important, you don't have to jot it down anymore. All you have to do is press select and it'll remember that convernsation. Also in order to remember what they said, you must use the spell 'recall' (or was that rememer?). It comes in handy at times.
Story - 6
Yeah, I know I gave the story a six but come on. It always seems so lame (IMO), you are the son of a great hero (Ortega), who must go out there and defeat the Demon Lord Baramos by the order of the king. This is the type of plot you see in the ol nes days.
Gameplay - 9
Even though the story is crummy, the Gameplay is still great and addicting. I can't explain the cosmic reasons but the game pretty much rocks of awesomeness! What makes this game even better is the personality system. It can affect your character stats and its great.
At the beginning of the game you are given questions which will affect your personality. The final question will always be a scenario. There are variety of scenarios from being a monster to jumping off a tower to pushing a boulder. The outcome will give your personality (I got Romance... ugh). There are different types of personalities ranging from Happy, to Lewd, to Bully and etc.
Also you can register and create your own characters in this game. There are character classes for your extra charcters. Altogther there are 9 (one secret and including the Hero class) ranging from warriors to magic users. The most worthless class IMO is the jester dude. When you register a new character you give them some seeds and their final stats will determine their personality. If you don't like the personalities, then use books or accessories to change it (you'll have to find or buy them though).
There are also two mini (there could be more) in here. One if the monster arena game where you bet money on a monster. the other is some type of boardgame which is really fun (too bad it'll cost ya a token).
Remember the medal collection in DWIV? Well it's back. For those who don't know, it's about collecting tiny medals and trading them in for good items when you talk to the dude in the well. Also there are monster medals, which you get from your enemies, ranging from broze, silver, to gold. It's hard to get a monster medal and the manual said something about something will happen if you get alot of monster medals. I dunno what it means but it better be good.
The only annoying part about the game would be the money and leveling up. Money is a important thing in this game so you'll probably spend lots of time to get money (which is what I always do). But don't worry, thanks to the fact that in real life I love money so I'd do anything for a buck or too, which is why I haven't went crazy... yet.
Replay Value - 9
I'm so addicted to this game that I play it when ever I have the chance, I'd play it over and over cause it's very very great. You'll never get tired, there are so many things to do, and besides, this game ain't one your easiest ones and is very challenging. My favorite part is creating a character (and if I don't like the character, I can always sell his/her armour for money).
To buy or to rent?
I say buy it, renting would be a waste of five bucks... unless of course you don't like RPGs that much.
