"X and his buddy Zero return in a decent GBC title..."

Opening remarks:

I was strollin through Wal-Mart when i decided to pickt his game up. Since I haven't played Xtreme 1, I didn't know exactly what to expect from this one. But since it had the MMX title on it, I decided to pick up a copy. I can say that I wasn't dissappointed, but the game isn't without flaws.

Graphics: 8

I must say that the sprites look as good on GBC as I would expect them to. The backgrounds have a decent amount of detail, and everything is nicely colored. Plus the still pictures of the characters are well drawn, overall decent graphics. There is some slowdown in some areas, and a bit of break up here and there. Still, I really wouldn't have expected much more from a GBC only title.

Sound: 9

This is actually one GBC game that you don't want to turn the volume down to zero. The tunes are nicely done, and most of em are taken straight from the SNES games. The sound FX are also done rather well and fit the actions perfectly.

Control: 10

Control has never been a problem in a Mega Man game, and this one is no exception. They even found a decent way to configure the dash into things, and the rapid fire+auto charge make X a breeze to control if you have some trouble at first. Overall, nicely done.

Gameplay: 8

This is your classic MMX gameplay that you've come to know and love in the series. The replay value is rather high for the fact that you'll want to play through at least 3 times to unlock everything. However, I must say that the parts system makes the game quite a bit easier. In fact, with the right part combination and by skipping 1 or 2 of X's enhancements you can actually make him more powerful unarmored than you an armored. Basically, the parts make it almost too easy. Still, you do have to work for the parts and it takes a bit of patience to get the DNA junk you need to get em, so the gameplay still gets an 8.

Story: 8

Basically, X and Zero ahve to race off to an island to investigate some strange occurances that have been happening. That's where the entire adventure unfolds and takes place. Again, for a GBC game the story is rather good.

Difficulty: 6

The patient man will be able to blow through this game without a problem, but there's still enough there to keep you playing. However, considered the low amount of challenge the rest of the game, you may get blown away by the final boss. It actually took me a couple tries to win that battle, even considering all the parts I gathered and all the secrets I found.

Rent or buy: If you're a fan of the series, buy it. If you're new to the series, borrow or rent it. As simple as that.

Overall: 8

Final comments: I like this game quite a lot, even considering some of it's obvious flaws. I reccomend it to any fan of the MMX series, but I recommend that newbies to the series borrow or rent it first.
