Super Mario Bros. Deluxe
Review by Ice Water
"I was wanting this game on the Gameboy ever since it came out on the NES! MY DREAM CAME TRUE!!!"
After waiting countless years in hopes that there would become a portable version of Super Mario Bros., it finally happened!! I wanted this game on Gameboy ever since the first Gameboy had come out, and it came! I'm so happy, but it's time to review the greatest game ever!
Changes:
With the transfer to the Gameboy came a few things. First, in order to keep Mario his same size, the screen was condensed down to a small size where you can't see everything at once. You will need to press the Up button to look up, the Down arrow to look down (as well as duck) or the select button to look ahead a short distance to see if something is about to kill you. That's really the only change to this great game.
Story:
There isn't much of a story here but what do you care? It's simple fun! If there was a story, it would be:
An invasion of turtles have come to the Mushroom Kingdom, and has kidnapped the Princess and her council! A lone plumber by the name of Mario has come to rescue her, neglecting his pipe-fixing duty! Fun no?
Gameplay (10/10)
This game was the only one I wanted when I was a kid. Such simple game play and probably one of the hardest games bundled into a great package! The game is a side scroller, which you head toward the right side of the screen while avoiding or jumping onto little enemy sprites, which range from Goomba mushrooms to Koopa turtles. If you touch them you will get killed, so watch out! The enemies start to get a little smarter later on, with jumping turtles, hammer throwing turtles, to indestructible beetles! Luckly, you get some of the first power ups made in a game: Mushrooms! These little wonders make you big and strong, letting you smash bricks with your hand and get hit without dying. There is also a Fire Flower which lets you attack from a far distance and kill underwater enemy's. Such fun and it brings so many memories...
Music (9/10)
Who could forget one of the 5 tracks in this game? Each one! The land theme, sewer theme, water theme, star theme, and the castle theme! All memorable and you may find yourself humming them someday when you least suspect it!
Sound (9/10)
You would think that the transfer from the NES to the Gameboy would effect the sound, but Nintendo kept the original sound! That was my major complaint with other system transfer games (like Chrono Trigger's Playstation release) but Nintendo prevented this! Sounds just like the NES only on a portable system.
Replay (9/10)
The Gameboy version has more replay than the NES version surprisingly. With the extra features, you can unlock the long lost sequel to this game (the ridiculously HARD one that is), features that let you change the title screen, stuff you can print out, and a chance to start the game with a whole lot more lives! And with the challenge mode, you get to try and get the set score and extras in a level of your choice (you have to unlock it first of course) then try for the goal. With so much more stuff, you can play this for months before you are done.
To buy or rent?
If there is a place to rent Gameboy games, let me know about it! Seriously, you may only get the chance to buy it, and it is recommended unless you are one of those people who do not like to buy games you already have. Even though this is portable, you aren't getting too much more except two games in one and a lot of bonus features.
