Gex: Enter the Gecko
Review by dagget7
"The wise crackin' Gecko makes his way to Game Boy Color!"
Here comes the wily Gecko on to the Game Boy Color! He's already been to the Sony Playstation and Nintendo 64 in his 3D form with pretty good success, but did you know that he started as a 2D Spirit on the 3D0? Oh well, let's go on to the review.
(8)Introduction: If you've played the 3d versions, it's nice to recognize some of the tunes and scenery on the GBC 2D version. Yeah, I know you're going, "What?!" don't worry, the game is still pretty fun (In my opinion) as a 2D sidescroller.
(8)Graphics: When specially enhanced for GBC they look pretty good compared to some games, but pale in comparison to others. You see, it's kinda cool to see the movie the game resembles, but some of the names are a little strange, (ex.Thursday the 12). Still, a nice job color enhanced, but no extra's over playing it with a normal Game Boy, Game Boy pocket.
(7)Gameplay: Now this is kinda the games lower side of the stick but once you get used to the controls, it'll be easier then it once was. Now here's a brief explanation of the controls: B to jump, plus right before you land press B to do a Super jump, A to tail whip, strangely you press the digital pad bit by bit to walk, press and hold it to run, also, when near a vine wall move the pad to climb, Start to pause it, and Select to lash out your tongue. Anyways, once you've got the controls down, the game becomes much more fun then you expected, but still the game does have the tendecy to frustrate you, but still, it's pretty fun.
(7)Sound: One downfall, to expect is that Gex does not say a word at all. Yeah, I know, it would've been nice if he said, "It's tail time!" at least once but it's not bad considering his voice was annoying sometimes in the console versions. The sound effects, are average at best, because everything is just normal, such as a jump making a noise or a bad guy wondering around. The music is pretty good during playing time and if you've play the PSX or N64 version, you'll defintely recognize the overworld music where you select all your levels.
(7)Replayability: Truthfully, this game does has a more you might and might not theory, you'll hate it at first (As I did), But soon you'll grow to like the game, moving along like nobody's business. And, if you hate it, well then, you just do.
(7)Overall: I can't say if you'd want to buy this game brand new, since I've seen it for up to $30.00 but you should consider it since I've seen it for sale as low as $19.99. Honestly, I got it as a gift, but for all the gamers that didn't get it as a gift, I'd say if it's used or brand new at a good price too, why not go for it and buy it?
