WWF Attitude
Review by D Generate
"Just when you think Acclaim don't bother putting any effort into handheld games...They confirm it."
WWF Attitude was pretty revolutionary when it was released back in 1999. Well, the Playstation, N64 and Dreamcast versions were anyway. They had decent graphics, great music and authentic entrances. They also had numerous buttons. When my mother bought this game for me, I was already expecting very little. I mean, what can you expect when you're playing a game with only two buttons...
GAMEPLAY: Wow, words don't even describe how bad the game play in the GBC version of Attitude is. You only have two buttons to work with, A and B, obviously, and A+Select will pull off your finishing move when you have a finishing slot full. These "slots" are indicated by little dots on the side of your name, which isn't very useful, since you can only have two full at a time. Also, your movement is very sluggish and the horrendous animation makes it look as if you are skating really slowly rather than walking. The wrestler selection is limited too, since you only have 20 wrestlers to choose from. This is less than half of what you could choose in the console versions of the game. There are no unlockables, either, and no saving, meaning you have to write down a password after every match in season mode. These passwords are irritating. It would've been much easier than having to scribble down a password that appears very briefly on the screen. There are a decent selection of modes, however, such as cage matches, a VS mode, a career mode, and a King of The Ring mode. They would be good if there wasn't such a limited control scheme. The only way to pull off different moves is with the directional buttons, e.g. in a grapple, if you press back on the D-Pad and A, you would pull off a suplex, where as Down+A would do a Hurricanrana. The gameplay is pretty horrible, but it's not hard to expect when you consider this is the Gameboy Colour we're talking about. 2/10.
GRAPHICS: The colours are horrible. Just horrible. Every time I played this game my eyes began to sting. It's nearly impossible to distinguish which wrestler you are. The colours are pretty bad, and it's obvious that there were only a few shades that were used. X-Pac is one of the few superstars who looks unique, as his clothing is different from everyone else's, and yet, for some reason, Stone Cold looks just like Goldust when you hit the ring. What's bad with this, is Goldust, as his name suggests, wears all gold. Stone Cold, on the other hand, wears nothing but a pair of black trunks. THAT'S how bad it is. The superstar pictures, on the other hand look alright on the player selection screen, but the in-game graphics are so bad it's unforgivable. Pokemon Gold and Silver proved that the GBC can produce games with high quality graphics, and while they were released one year after Attitude, and they're Pokemon, not wrestling games, that high caliber graphics are possible from the GBC, and those two Pokemon games could also be played on the regular Gameboy. Attitude is a GBC exclusive, meaning that the graphics are supposed to be better than those of a regular Gameboy game. Too bad they're not. -1/10.
SOUND: Someone please rip off my ears!!! There is only one painful track on the entire DAMN GAME. No entrance music, no speech, just the freakin' in-game track. There are a few sound effects, like the sound of someone hitting the mat, someone being hit by a punch or kick, and did I mention someone hitting the mat? It's futile. This is the biggest letdown in what is already an extremely regrettable game. -10/10.
OVERALL: WWF Attitude for GBC IS NOT something to base your opinion of the WWF Attitude games on. Acclaim has proved time and time again with pathetic handheld versions of console games that they really couldn't care less about the owners of handhelds. WWF Attitude for GBC is not a good game, and if you must, go play Attitude on any of the other three systems. Don't buy this game, burn it. It does not belong on this Earth. Overall, WWF Attitude gets a -4/10, rounded up to a 1 by Gamefaqs standards.
