% 01. About Rengoku: The Tower of Purgatory % [BTRNG]
% %
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
NOTE: "Rengoku" is the Japanese word for "Purgatory"
Rengoku lets you assume the role of GRAM, an advanced battle android that has
gained self-awareness and seems to be locked up in a huge tower where other
identical androids are fighting a never-ending war. GRAM has lots of questions
regarding himself and the constant fighting that is taking place inside the
tower so he decides to fight his way up in hopes of having his questions
answered. During his ascent, he will meet other self-aware androids, each with
different character traits, and finally realize the truth behind his existence
and the true purpose of the tower. That is pretty much the spoiler-less version
of the story.
Basic gameplay consists of destroying enemy androids that will under certain
circumstances drop part of their equipment. GRAM can make use of that
equipment and this allows for great customization when it comes to GRAM's
battle abilities. Undeniably, moulding GRAM to your liking is definitely the
most interesting and rewarding part of the game. Video game-literate people may
find this strikingly similar to other video game series like Armored Core but
there are as many similarities as there are differences between the two. While
in Armored Core you control huge clunky Transformers-like robots, Rengoku's
androids are human-sized and their designs can be very reminiscent of Guyver or
works by H.R. Giger, potentially making them horror-inspired moving works of
art. Moreover, most parts can change their appearance depending on what part of
GRAM's body they're placed on, effectively giving you lots of freedom when it
comes to GRAM's looks. Finally, if a piece of equipment is no longer useful or
not to your liking, you can turn it into "elixir skin", a form of currency you
can use to permanently upgrade GRAM's base stats such as cooling, defense and
the amount of equipment that can be equipped per body part. Needless to say,
you'll be spending quite a bit of time experimenting with different
combinations of equipment to achieve your ideal balance of looks and battle
ability.
Finally, Rengoku has lots of references to Dante's Divine Comedy, specifically
the second part, Purgatorio. Actually, Rengoku is BASED on Dante's Purgatorio
so knowledge of that work is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED so that you can truly
understand and appreciate the game.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
It has come to my attention that there is a number of differences between the
versions of the game, so I'll be listing them. I'd like to point out that I
wrote this FAQ/Walkthrough while playing the EU version.
JP Version
============
- Original game version.
US Version
============
- Item Swap Mode added.
- Tutorial added. You have to watch the tutorial every time you start a new
game.
- Pancration Mode has been renamed to Pancratium Mode.
- Two pieces of equipment can now be found lying on the floor in the very first
terminal room of the game.
EU Version
============
- All the additions/changes of the US version.
- The camera works exactly like in Rengoku II. This means that the camera stays
FIXED on GRAM's back and is slightly zoomed in.
- There is no way of controlling the camera. The PSP's analog stick can now be
used to control GRAM's movement.
- The camera angle when encountering level masters has been changed. Instead of
DEAD FRONT, a more cinematic high-angle shot is used.
- The in-game description of the weapon "Neo-Revolver" is glitched. It is, "A
miracle revolver that outstrips the performance of other han" (description
continues off-screen).
- The icon for elixir skin has been changed to the one used in Rengoku II.
- You can choose between English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. To
change language, you should keep the L button pressed while the game boots
up.

% %
% 03. Hints & Tips % [HNTTP]
% %
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
I won't be outlining this game's controls or basic gameplay since you can find
this information in the game manual. Here's a list of hints & tips:
- The game can be very easy if you spend too much time gathering equipment and
performing upgrades. If you want to experience the game as one should, I
suggest you complete each level once (you may complete the 2nd level twice
though) and go back to the lower levels to gather missing equipment right
before the final battle.
- If you're in a terminal room and want to know which level you're on, just
look at the floor. In the center, you'll see a number of triangles forming
various patterns. The number of triangles corresponds to the number of the
level.
- Do not underestimate weapons that can stun or knock down. No matter how
trivial the damage, if 3-4 enemy androids start stunning you one after the
other, they'll probably continue doing so until you're defeated.
- The repair systems are a great piece of equipment early on, when your max
endurance is low. However, the more you increase your endurance, the more
useless they become. It is then that cooling systems and laser jammers may
prove more useful.
- Your heat levels will go down faster when you are in a room without any
enemies around or if you are standing still. This means that you can achieve
maximum cooling when standing still in an empty room. The same applies to
your endurance regeneration rate.
- If you've been through a room before, doors will be unlocked. If you run into
enemies and don't want a fight, you can simply leave and re-enter the room
and enemies will disappear.
- If there is a piece of equipment you want to obtain and know that an enemy is
carrying it, the best way to increase your chances of acquiring it is making
that enemy run out of energy/ammo for every other piece of his equipment.
Then you can overkill him and if equipment drops, it will definitely be the
piece you wanted to get your hands on. However, being able to perform such a
feat will depend on your understanding of the game, experience, and the type
of equipment you want to acquire.
- I'm against using this but I must mention it for the sake of completion. Once
you enter the first terminal room of the game, you can find some equipment
lying on the floor. If you turn them to elixir as soon as you get them, they
will respawn instantly. This allows for unlimited elixir early on though
it is tedious and a complete waste of time. Be a man, go out and destroy
things in a fit of rage and you'll gather elixir in no time.

Some things to keep in mind concerning this walkthrough:
==========================================================
- I will assume that your character is not overpowered. If you happen to be
overpowered I suggest that you ignore any comment concerning this game's
difficulty. Due to the game's "grinding" nature, it's quite hard not to be
overpowered at times.
- I refuse to provide very particular strategies or upgrade suggestions.
Moulding your own character is half the fun this game can provide.
- I will only be listing NEWLY AVAILABLE equipment for each floor. That is
because listing all pieces of equipment available on each floor would be
quite tedious. It saves space anyway. Keep in mind that once a certain piece
of equipment becomes available in a specific level, it can usually be found
on the next one as well.
So, that's it! Pop in your Rengoku UMD and let's begin.
The Prologue FMV begins, accompanied by an operatic piece:
======================================FMV======================================
Could a legacy of slaughter and destruction
lead to anything but eventual ruin?
The endless heaps of corpses
and the ominous series of damning insights
deeply ingrained in the androids' memories...
...that might have been the start of it all.
What seems to be some kind of nervous system is visible. The camera zooms out
and...wooah, a scary android face is looking straight at you. You then see an
army of such androids waltzing through explosions, completely unaffected by
them. One of them seems to freak out, and A REVOLVER SPROUTS OUT OF HIS HEAD.
This same android is then fighting a gold-coloured android while their battle
is shown through monitors to men who seem to be enjoying the spectacle. The
gold android manages to win in a very...flashy way and strikes a "screaming at
the sky" pose.
======================================FMV======================================
===============================================================================
1ST ASCENT
===============================================================================
One of those scarily human androids we saw during the Prologue FMV is on his
knees, in the middle of what seems to be an empty and abandoned room, with a
single source of light right above him. The android slowly lifts his upper body
and...HOLY PIXELS, BATMAN!...looks into the light with his rather...horribly
pixelated face. Rengoku's main theme kicks in and you are able to witness the
outcome of a battle between a blood-red android and the gold android you saw
during the game's Prologue FMV (I'll refer to him as Type01 from now on).
Type01, defeated, is kneeling in a similar fashion to the lonely android you
saw at the beginning and looks up at his opponent who's getting ready to
deliver the finishing blow. The camera then shifts to the kneeling android of
the beginning and the visions of him and Type01 seem to overlap, revealing
that he is actually Type01. He continues looking into the light with a
PRICELESS (although pixelated) expression and after recalling the blood-red
android's face slowly stands up. It seems this is the hero of the game.
You may now enter the name of the game's main character, default is GRAM, but
you can name him Michael Jackson for all I care. I'll be referring to him as
GRAM though.
After being forced to watch the game's tutorial (and for good reason) the time
where you actually play has come.
**************************************
0th Level ~ The Gates of Purgatory [GTLVL]
**************************************
Level Description:
====================
A pleasant place to be. A wide, square-shaped room with cold lighting very much
like moonlight and corners totally devoid of light. The way the warp point's
red light stands out while matching the colour scheme is beyond words.
Accompanied by a great introductory track. Gentle piano VERY reminiscent of
Shoji Meguro's work (see latest "Megami Tensei" games) which slowly picks up
while martial/post-apocalyptic ambience seamlessly integrates itself into it
and dresses it with a sentiment of foreboding. A couple of seconds before its
end, the ambience dies out and the piano plays a few sweet sounding notes, a
sign of hope.
Level Strategy:
=================
Enjoy the scenery & music, brainstorm a bit, mess around with the controls, and
off to the warp point.
*********************
1st Level ~ Pride [PRLVL]
*********************
Level Description:
====================
Dark dull rooms reminiscent of a post-war abandoned warehouse. Very unpleasant
and probably full of dirt, dust and rust. Earth colours are dominant here. A
rather uplifting heavy breakbeat/electro track makes sure to keep you excited.
Level Strategy:
=================
Since this is an introductory level, enemy androids are poorly armed. Equip the
equipment you found at the terminal room and start hacking away. Try to get
used to overkills and make sure to gather (and turn to elixir) a sizeable
amount of equipment so you can start upgrading. I believe your physical
defense is of most importance right now.

This ominous synth, accompanied by some rather funky electronics, will be your

A slender, purple-ish, ninja-esque android with blades on both arms is blocking

Well, all I can say is, "don't stand still and take a beating". Mars won't
exactly relentlessly hunt you down but he WILL try to chop you up if you stay
too close. I suggest a ranged fight though it may take more time since your
ranged weaponry isn't as strong at this point in the game. In case you need
them, there are two piles of crates on the left and right which may drop items.
There is also a wall near the exit in case you need some cover, though I doubt
you'll need it.
GRAM:
"I'd say that's an invitation to the next level. I wonder what's up there? I
guess there's only one way to find out."

********************
Level Description:
====================
It pretty much looks like the post-war abandoned warehouse from the previous
level, but the walls seem cleaner and there's more light. More like an
abandoned factory now. Accompanied by a rather intricate drum & bass track that
borders on IDM at times.
Level Strategy:
=================
A REALLY vital level if you ask me, almost all the new equipment here is
REQUIRED since the level master here will prove rather...unforgiving. Also,
some of this level's enemy androids can easily defeat you, so whether you like
it or not, you will have to learn to dodge and roll around like a monkey on
drugs or you will suffer a number of infuriating defeats. Make sure to get your
hands on better equipment as soon as possible (practically EVERYTHING here is
better than what you already have), and don't even bother fighting the level
master unless you have an α Repair System and 1-2 Kite Shields.

Lycaon is fully equipped for long-range combat, has accelerated movement to
easily dodge your bullets, and a shield strong enough that allows only the
strongest of attacks to cause damage. To add insult to injury, this level is
suited for long-range combat, where Lycaon excels in. His rapid-fire weaponry,
isn't all that threatening, his rifle though, is a completely different story.
Your shields won't do much against it and there's always a possibility it will
knock you down, rendering you vulnerable. Good news is, he doesn't use it that
often when you are near him, so try to stay close, hitting him with your most
damaging attacks. He will go down eventually.

*********************
Level Description:
====================
Even cleaner and more organized than before, this warm-lit, grey/brown facility
does little to please the eye. At least you are no longer walking on dirt, are
you? Accompanied by your typical house/lounge amalgam.
Level Strategy:
=================
This level will pit you against two or even three opponents at the same time so
you'll have to perfect your dodging skills here. Learn to dodge-attack-dodge
and you'll be fine. New to this level are the concepts of heavy weaponry,
electronic damage and being overheated by an enemy. Some enemies will be
carrying missile launchers and artillery that can be a bit dangerous, but
they are easy to dodge and you can probably handle that. However, you should
be more careful when facing an enemy with a flamethrower. The flamethrower
causes minor damage (some of it is electronic) but causes the heat levels
of your entire body to increase, potentially crippling you. You could equip
a Liquid Cooler to avoid overheating but that's entirely up to you.

"Another challenger? How many does that make? I've lost count. All these
challengers tirelessly trying to climb to the top of the tower... And every

GRAM:

Minos:
"You think that would end it? No, in defeat we merely lose memory we no longer

Minos is a rather docile opponent. He won't attack that often, though he can be
quite persistent once he does. He is primarily melee ranged though he DOES
carry a piece of artillery and is definitely not afraid to use it once you go a
bit too far for his tastes. His melee fighting includes charging blindly (and
persistently to say the least) with his sword and using his hammer to add some
spice. Frankly, the hard part of this battle is maneuvering in this less than
comfortable battlefield and actually defeating Minos since he is equipped with
a formidable repair system.
Minos:

*********************
4th Level ~ Sloth [SLLVL]
*********************
Level Description:
====================
Pretty much the same with the previous level, a solid yet dull facility, though
it's green shaded this time. Accompanied by an enjoyable track (the tutorial
track) which sounds very much like the one on the 1st level. Let's roll.
Level Strategy:
=================
This level can't be as hard as it can be annoying. It appears that most enemies
here would prefer to overheat rather than defeat you, so be mentally prepared.
The heat sword and the grenade launcher are introduced in this level, probably
the two most dangerous sources of heat the game has to offer. The heat sword is
well...a sword, so it's easily avoided. On the other hand, the grenade launcher
fires not-so-visible grenades that upon detonation may cause all sorts of

The track from the 2nd level returns, will this be some sort of quirky battle?
The answer is one step away.
A blue heavily armored android, featuring what appears to be a missile launcher
where it's head should be, is blocking your path.
Briareos:
"Great! A challenger! It's been ages! Come on, let's fight! Just bring it on!"
GRAM:
"You enjoy this fighting?!"
Briareos:
"Of course! Don't you? Fighting's great!"
GRAM:
"No, I'm just full of doubts and questions. What should I do? Why should I
fight?"
Briareos:
"Because it's in your programming. Your circuits ache for it. All you can hear
is fight, fight, fight, fight...You have to obey. So come on! Let's get to it!"

A pretty straightforward area, enough space to fight in whatever way you want,
although there may be a problem...Briareos. Well, nothing spells out "full
frontal assault" as well as Briareos does, his equipment is out of this world
and he ADORES all of it. No matter how you choose to approach this battle,
Briareos will try to stay at mid range so he can effectively unleash a nuclear
holocaust upon you. Your main concern should be avoiding his grenades, and
making sure that he NEVER, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES corners you. He isn't really
hard, just annoying.

Level Description:

Again, this seems like your good ol' abandoned facility, only this time it's
squeaky clean, grey tinted, and has lots of cold lighting. Hurray for decent

you'll ever need.
Level Strategy:

Aww great...another annoying level. Remember the grenade launchers? Well they
are back along with a new friend, floating mines. Mine-using enemies will in
most cases stand in a corner and surround themselves with a cloud of mines
which will slowly float towards you. Eventually, they will run out of mines and
start attacking you from their safe corner, probably the very first time you
bear witness to the existence of an AI in a common enemy. You will also
encounter your first decent quantum weapon here, the Plasma Cutter α, which may
not be really damaging but is a nice and somewhat reliable weapon to acquire.

A rather intricate and confusing area for an overly simple battle. Sphinx isn't
much of an opponent, he relies too heavily on his plasma sword which can pack
quite a punch if your defense isn't accordingly upgraded. Obviously, you should
employ long-range tactics to avoid being hit and the low walls are just the way
to do it. If a low wall is between you and Sphinx, he will be forced to engage
in long-range combat, and regrettably, he's quite bad at it.

Level Description:
====================
Finally, it seems like you're in a real futuristic environment, cold lighting,
geometric shape decorations everywhere and a metallic grey tint. It's back to
drum & bass for this level and though I may not like it that much, I have to
admit that it fits the level perfectly.
Level Strategy:

Hmmm...not much, your opponents here carry some nice upgraded versions of some
basic weaponry, namely the 13mm Auto Nanbu and 15.7mm Machinegun but it's not
anything you should worry about. The dangerous ones are the ones wielding
Mortar Guns and Floating Mines, pretty much the same as the previous level.
The only "real" change is that opponents here are often equipped with
Laserproof Shields or Laser Jammers, which means your quantum weapons will be
pretty useless against them. Then again, I doubt you are relying on quantum
weapons at this point in the game soooo...meh! Finally, DO make sure that you
obtain some of their anti-quantum equipment since it will prove very useful for
the battles ahead.

Once again, a place unsuitable for a battleground, crates blocking your way and
line of vision, chasms here and there, and a LETHAL opponent. Alkmaion's
equipment isn't that dazzling, but wait...what's that? A PARTICLE CANNON? Well,
as you have already guessed, this weapon is the one and only threat this battle
has to offer. Want to know what it looks like? Imagine a number of tiny blue
beams spreading from Alkmaion's chest similarly to how a 7.62mm or 15.7mm
machine gun spreads its bullets. Sounds harmless? Now imagine each beam being
able to do damage equal to 1/5 of your endurance bar while inflicting some heat
damage. Harmless enough for you? All you can do? Stay away! Giving space for
the beams to spread will guarantee that you get hit by as few of them as
possible. Needless to say, if you try "hugging" him, you will instantly die the
moment his particle cannon is fired. If for some reason he's near impossible to
defeat, equip a Laser Jammer, a very cheap piece of equipment, and this battle
is as good as over.

Level Description:

Levels are steadily becoming longer, and this is the second longest level, so
be prepared. Your opponents here seem to be of various natures, some will
resist physical attacks while others will resist electronic ones, some will use
heavy physical attacks (Linear Mortar Gun) while others will prefer electronic
ones (Gravity Grenade/Rail Gun). Your best bet is to treat your android like a
jack of all trades. Equip some Point Barriers (unless your defense stats are
uneven) and make sure you are able to inflict both types of damage and you'll
breeze through this level. It's not hard, just a bit tedious and long.

This guy is bad, really bad...at fighting that is. Compared to Alkmaion,
Statius is a fuzzy-wuzzy newborn kitten. His chainsaw is bugged and won't work
(programming FAIL), so he will resort to the rest of his equipment, which
is rather...unimpressive. When it comes to damage, he relies on his coilgun
which is quite decent, but easy to dodge. The rest is laughable, annoying yes,
but not dangerous. Just get it over with.
GRAM:
"So we've been fighting on and on for nothing! And we're still supposed to
carry on with it now?"
Statius:
"Not for nothing. Even if there are no spectators, we are witnesses. You and I.
And I feel sure our battles are being monitored by someone. It's as if we are
being controlled..."

8th Level ~ The Garden of Eden [EDLVL]
**********************************
Level Description:
====================
This time you are presented with a blindingly well-lit, pure white, high-tech
facility. The musical piece you were listening to during the battle with Sphinx
will keep you company for this level.
Level Strategy:
=================
It's finally here, the last and longest level of the tower, but not necessarily
the hardest. Your opponents in this level carry weapons made to inflict PAIN
and they are all equipped with strong shields. Your main worry? The Quantum
Cannon. If more than one androids choose to go Quantum Cannon-happy for some
random reason during this level, it is imperative that you destroy one of them
as soon as possible. Of course, that won't really solve the problem since
another one will spawn, but the chances he'll immediately start Quantum
Cannon-ing you to death are rather slim. Make sure to gather all the equipment
you need and make sure to pick up 1-2 Plasma Shields, which, although quite
short-lived, considerably reduce the damage inflicted on you. Finally, if you
want to get your hands on any of the equipment you might have missed during the
previous levels, now is the time to go and get it.

The blood-red android that appeared in GRAM's flashback is blocking your path,

Gryphus:
"So you're back, GRAM? Hundreds of years have passed, but the cycle repeats

GRAM:
"So I have been here before! This time I'll stop the cycle. I will get to the
top of the tower!"
Gryphus:
"I have never been beaten yet. Unlike you, getting reset each time you're
defeated, I've gathered knowledge. And I know. Our original purpose was
exhausted hundreds of years ago now. Everything that happens in this tower is
pointless. Nothing but endless destruction and warfare. Do you think you can

A wide open area with no obstacles of any sort, a battleground fit for the
final battle. It is due to this simple layout though, that Gryphus isn't really
hard. His flamethrower will overheat you in no time so stay away, the farther
the better. That only leaves his rail cannon. It is quite strong but easy to
dodge and Gryphus will be knocked down after every use, so that's your chance
to use your own heavy weaponry against him. You will probably not even get to
see his clockdown attack, an attack that occurs when his legs overheat. It
inflicts no damage but it will stun you for a sizeable amount of time (4-5
seconds). Considering this is supposed to be the final battle, he's easy to
defeat. Your previous incarnation must have been a pathetic fighter.

GRAM:
"Who are you?"
Deucalion:
"My child! I am Deucalion. The one who controls you all... The one who watches

GRAM:
"Watches over them? So you're the reason why this tower is just one endless
battle ground."
Deucalion:
"Yes. All this is to create the ultimate fighting machine. That's the reason
you've fought your way up here too. Now, I'll take your data if you don't mind.
With that, I can make all you androids fight harder. And improve more."
GRAM:
"I...! I...!"
Deucalion:
"Foolish child! The child of a machine cannot shoot its parent! You are under
my control. Still... As a parent, it's pleasing to see a certain amount of
defiance in your children. It shows they're developing and evolving. So go now!
Come back when you've made yourself stronger! I'm always watching you."

===============================================================================
2ND ASCENT
===============================================================================
Yes, you may cry. Here you are again, back to the very beginning. Now you know
how GRAM must have felt back then, when he was staring into the light with his
pixelated face, recalling unfortunate events of the past. Now let me explain
some things about 2nd Ascent:
- Level layouts have changed, appearance and music are the same, so I won't be
providing descriptions.
- Yes, you'll have to fight all the level masters again, they look the same and
their order of appearance hasn't changed. However, they are way more
aggressive and their equipment has been upgraded, dialogues have changed too.
The strategies for beating them remain mostly the same so I'll be brief in
that section.
- Enemies are now stronger and come with all-new equipment. As a general rule,
2nd Ascent equipment is far more superior to what you could get during 1st
Ascent.
- There is little you can do defense-wise during 2nd Ascent, damage ratings
are ridiculously high and the game has shifted towards a more aggressive,
"kill before you get killed" gameplay. This is especially true when it comes
to fighting level masters, you'll notice that battles with them won't last
nearly as much as they did during 1st Ascent.
- Number of opponents per room can climb up to four at the same time, and most
of the time there will be 1 or 2 respawns per opponent until they are taken
out completely. To add insult to injury, they're a lot less idle and have
noticeably better aim.
- Occassionally you may encounter 1st Ascent enemies. As expected, they are
easily taken care of and drop 1st Ascent equipment.

Let me elaborate, some android that aspires to become some kind of
pro-wrestling ninja will start drill-ing and plasma sword-ing you to death
while his friends will be using 3 different types of weapons of mass
destruction on you with AIMING SKILLZ that would make Legolas cry...forever.

Sphinx will be quite the trigger-happy personality during this battle. He will
shoot bolts at you, come closer and use his machine gun, then come even closer
and use his plasma sword. He is way more agile and persistent than last time
but he won't be doing any serious damage. Just overpower him with your best
equipment.

Another level brimming with new equipment. The enemies here are pretty mediocre

This level is easier than the previous one but it definitely is bigger. You'll

completely fill your inventory during this one. Only thing to look out for? Yet
another upgrade for the grenade launcher, though you won't be noticing anyway
since you will be destroying androids at rates of 1 per second. I even managed
to destroy 3 conveniently lined up androids with a single use of my trusty AG-9

Finally, you're here once again, and hopefully for the last time. Your

***********************************
Top Level ~ Ascension to Heaven [SCHVN]
***********************************
Level Description:
====================
You are inside a well-lit, white room resembling the interior of a palace.
The arranged version of Rengoku's main theme has been chosen for this area.
The Final Battle:
===================
Gryphus is standing right in front of you, with what appears to be a narrow
chasm right behind him. Beyond this chasm, a gigantic bust is visible. It
depicts a rather effeminate figure clad in metal and a turquoise shaded,
transparent material. Its face is partially covered by an intricate device
resembling an oxygen mask. The figure's half-open eyes are staring down as if
blind. Deucalion.
Deucalion:
"You've done well, GRAM. You are able to escape my control and your 'self'
program is near completion. So, my children... Fight! Fight and become strong!"
Gryphus:
"Prepare yourself, GRAM!"
GRAM:
"Why do you always obey Deucalion?"
Gryphus:
"I'm not obeying him, I'm just doing the only thing I can. I am a guard. It's
my duty. No matter how pointless that may be, it's the reason for my existence.
If you're so sure you're different. If you say you're fighting of your own
volition...Then defeat me! We'll see who wins. The one who accepts control, or
the one who defies it! We're just puppets made by humans. All we can do is live
our artificial existence..."

X - Chasm
Gryphus hasn't changed at all since last time, only this time he is easier to
defeat since the battleground can be used against him. Notice the three
structures, they can be used as cover and Gryphus will often get stuck while
trying to get to you. This means you can stay at one place for as much as you
want while regenerating your health, though I doubt you'll ever need to. A very
easy battle.
Once Gryphus is defeated:
GRAM:
"I'm a machine. A machine with a self. And I choose to live as a machine of my
own volition. Outside of this tower."
Gryphus:
"If Deucalion is destroyed, the reason for my existence will be gone. But you
can search for yours...I suppose that's what self is."
Deucalion:
"Congratulations, GRAM. So this long Purgatory Project comes to an end. You've
finally surpassed the endless cycle of everlasting warfare. Your purpose is not
to fight. Instead you choose to fight for a purpose. As the ultimate autonomous
battle android. So go now! Go into the new world you've been seeking...It is a
world of even more battles!"
======================================FMV======================================
A pair of heavy doors slide open, revealing an endless wasteland. More towers
identical to the one you've been fighting in can be seen in the distance. While
GRAM is looking outside, the camera focuses on a giant pair of red eyes behind
him. It seems that GRAM destroyed Deucalion and his head is now lying on the
floor. The camera slowly zooms in on one of GRAM's eyes. Suddenly, his pupil
dilates and a pair of robotic angel wings tear their way out of his back.
Through Deucalion's red eyes you can see GRAM, kneeling, forcefully stretching
his newly formed wings and taking off. The picture starts fading as GRAM is
flying straight into the sky. The game credits kick in.
======================================FMV======================================
Congratulations, you have successfully finished Rengoku. Once the credits are

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Heh, it seems that if you want to squeeze the game dry, you'll have to climb
the tower yet again. The Final Ascent is a harder version of the 2nd Ascent,
dialogues and most of the enemies are the same and once you finish it you
can begin yet another Final Ascent. There are some differences though:
- Some new equipment can be obtained throughout the Final Ascent and some
2nd Ascent equipment is no longer possible to obtain.
- The level masters seem to have become far more damaging and may even use
certain strategies against you, this is especially true when fighting the
last 3-4 level masters as even Statius can be considered a threat. By the
way, unless you are using a specialized build, Gryphus is near impossible
to beat, he is a real bastard.
- Three level masters will have different drops, two of which are exclusive to
the Final Ascent.
Everything else is identical to the 2nd Ascent, so I'll only be making a list
of the new equipment and where it can be obtained.

% %
% 06. Rengoku Explained % [RENXP]
% %
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Rengoku may have what seems to be a simple story to some, but I believe that
the interesting part about it is its relation with Dante's Divine Comedy. The
Divine Comedy is an epic poem written somewhere between 1308-1321 by Dante
Alighieri, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest works of world
literature.
The story is about how Dante (yes, the writter himself is the main character),
is saved by Virgil (Publius Vergilius Maro, a long dead Roman poet) presumably
while attempting to commit suicide. Virgil offers to give Dante a 'tour' of
Heaven and Hell for some unknown reason and Dante, having lost his will to
live, accepts. Virgil and Dante travel through Hell and Purgatory, encountering
various figures from history & mythology, and at the top of the mountain of
Purgatory it is revealed that Beatrice, Dante's childhood love, had actually
requested that Virgil guide Dante to her. Beatrice then replaces Virgil as
Dante's guide and leads Dante to Heaven, to his final confrontation with God
himself. The story is divided into three parts, Inferno (taking place in Hell),
Purgatorio (taking place in Purgatory) and Paradiso (taking place in Heaven).
If you are interested in reading the Divine comedy, be warned that it is very
long and that it's a POEM. Proper English translation may be an issue, but as
of now, the Mandelbaum version seems to be the most easy to read, without
confusing you too much or leading to misunderstandings. You may also check
www.divinecomedy.org where various versions (the Italian original and the
English Mandelbaum translation are among them) are available for free, mainly
for research purposes.
************
Humanity
************
Humans in the world of Rengoku were almost always waging war among themselves
(*ahem*). After too many human lives were claimed, androids were adopted for
warfare and since the outcome of wars depended on the performance and overall
abilities of the androids it was natural that newer and better androids were
researched constantly. After A.D.A.M. was created, wars came to an end and
humans used the remaining A.D.A.M. units as gladiators in arenas and watched
them fight as a way of entertainment. In the time period the main story takes
place, humanity has apparently died out. However, the A.D.A.M.s haven't stopped
fighting.
************
A.D.A.M.
************
A.D.A.M. stands for Autonomous Dueling Armed Machine. They are androids with
exceptional self-recovery abilities, capable of moulding a special liquid resin
called "elixir skin" into various weapons. Coupled with their highly advanced
artificial minds, these androids became the ultimate warriors, laying waste to
any battlefield in which they stood. Eventually, they destroyed all their
enemies and brought all wars to an end. Finally, they were adopted as
gladiators and up to the day the game's story begins, are fighting among
themselves for the amusement of their non-existent spectators.
*************
The Tower
*************
The tower is based on the Divine Comedy's Purgatory. The mountain of Purgatory
consists of 7 terraces, each representing one of the seven deadly sins. These
are Pride (Superbia), Envy (Invidia), Wrath (Ira), Sloth (Acedia), Greed
(Avaritia), Gluttony (Gula) and Lust (Luxuria). As its name implies, Purgatory
is a place for those who have sinned but are willing to repent. Sinners
climbing the mountain are eventually purged of their sins and gain entrance to
Heaven after reaching the Garden of Eden, which lies on the mountain's top.
********
GRAM
********
GRAM is the game's main hero, an android that somehow manages to develop
self-awareness and, wanting to discover himself and the truth about the tower
he is imprisoned in, tries to reach the top. It seems that GRAM fought Gryphus
long ago and lost. Beginning from scratch with no equipment, GRAM has to
overcome a series of difficult battles and hopefully, achieve his goal in the
process.
**********
Type01
**********
Type01 is apparently the previous incarnation of GRAM. He made it to the last
level of the tower but was defeated by Gryphus. Although GRAM is supposed not
to have any memory of being Type01, he does have memories regarding his defeat
in the hands of Gryphus.
********
Mars
********
Rengoku: The Tower of Purgatory
=================================
Mars is the 1st level master and is associated with Pride. He has probably no
self-awareness at all and therefore, no character traits. Mars is an all-round
fighter with minimal equipment, he relies mostly on his swords.
History/Mythology
===================
Mars is the Roman god of war, based on the Greek god of bloodlust and slaughter
(and also, incorrectly, war), Ares. Although Ares was always distrusted among
the Greeks, his Roman incarnation stood in much higher esteem and was the
patron deity of Rome.
The Divine Comedy
===================
In Dante's Purgatorio, while Dante is following a long paved path leading to
the 2nd terrace of Purgatory, he experiences lots of different visions
depicting various pagan deities and figures from history/mythology. In one of
them, he can see the god Mars, armoured, along with Pallas, Thymbraeus and
Jupiter (Canto XII ~ Lines 31-33).
**********
Lycaon
**********
Rengoku: The Tower of Purgatory
=================================
Lycaon is the 2nd level master and is associated with Envy. Whether he is
self-aware or not is unknown since he hardly ever talks. However, after being
defeated by GRAM a second time, he actually comments on GRAM's prowess which
denotes traces, if not existence, of self-awareness. Lycaon is a long-range
fighter with an assortment of bullet-centered weapons.
History/Mythology
===================
Lycaon, according to Greek mythology, was the first king of Arcadia and
supposedly sacrificed a newborn child to the god Zeus. Zeus found the deed
appalling and "unfit for a man to perform" and transformed Lycaon into a wolf.
The Divine Comedy
===================
As far as I am concerned, there are no references to Lycaon in the Divine
Comedy. There is a chance that the game designers may have confused Lycaon for
Lucan, a Roman poet related to Statius and Virgil whose name is mentioned
several times throughout the story.
*********
Minos
*********
Rengoku: The Tower of Purgatory
=================================
Minos is the 3rd level master and is associated with Wrath. He is the first
self-aware android GRAM encounters and is definitely not happy with what is
going on in the tower. Minos knows that even if he is defeated, he will resume
his duty of being a level master as if nothing ever happened. He does not enjoy
this "immortality" of his, and wants to be destroyed/set free. During GRAM's
second battle with Minos, Deucalion takes control of Minos' body after stating
that Minos had a programming flaw. Minos is an all-round fighter who prefers to
use his hammer and sword.
History/Mythology
===================
Minos was a mythical king of Crete infamous for his Labyrinth, a really hard
to get out of sort of maze. According to Greek mythology he would cast seven
young men and seven virgin maidens into the Labyrinth every nine years and have
them eaten by the Minotaur, a monstrous child his wife conceived after mating
with Poseidon's white bull. After his death, he was made Judge of the Dead.
The Divine Comedy
===================
In Dante's Inferno, Minos sits at the entrance to the 2nd circle of Hell. He
judges the sins of each soul and assigns it to its rightful punishment by
indicating the circle to which it must descend. In Dante's Purgatorio, after
Dante and Virgil arrive at the mountain of Purgatory, they meet Cato (Marcus
Porcius Cato Uticensis) who guards the shores of Purgatory. In order to be
allowed to pass, Virgil has to explain everything to Cato. During his
explanation, Virgil states that he is not bound by Minos (Canto I ~ Line 77).
*******************************
Briareos (proper: Briareus)
*******************************
Rengoku: The Tower of Purgatory
=================================
Briareos is the 4th level master and is associated with Sloth. He seems to be
self-aware though his uhh..."mental health" could be disputed. He seems to be
fully aware of what is going on but chooses not to pay any attention since he
finds great pleasure in battle. He doesn't care whether he loses or wins.
Briareos is a mid to long-range fighter and relies almost entirely on explosive
weapons.
History/Mythology
===================
Briareus was one of the Hecatonchires, children of Gaia and Uranus. They were
giants of incredible strenght and ferocity who each had a hundred arms and
fifty heads. Monstrous as they were, Uranus imprisoned them into the depths
of Tartarus. They were later released by Zeus to fight against the Titans in
the War of the Titans (Titanomachia). They overwhelmed their opponents by each
being able to throw a hundred rocks the size of mountains at once.
The Divine Comedy
===================
In Dante's Purgatorio, while Dante is following a long paved path leading to
the 2nd terrace of Purgatory, he experiences lots of different visions
depicting various pagan deities and figures from history/mythology. In one of
them, he can see the giant Briareus transfixed to the ground, presumably dead
(Canto XII ~ Lines 28-30).
**********
Sphinx
**********
Rengoku: The Tower of Purgatory
=================================
Sphinx is the 5th level master and is associated with Greed. He too, is
self-aware, though he seems to have adopted a very fatalistic attitude towards
everything. He also seems to be quite knowledgeable, although he doesn't know
the purpose behind his existence. He believes that the answer lies within
fighting (like some Capcom character we all know) and hopes that he will
someday find it. Sphinx is a mid to short range fighter who excels in using
swords.
History/Mythology
===================
In Greek Mythology, the Sphinx was a demon with a woman's head, a lion's body,
a tail resembling a snake, and eagle wings. She would sit on a high rock near a
cliff and ask all passersby the same riddle: "Which creature in the morning
goes on four feet, at noon on two, and in the evening upon three?" She would
strangle anyone unable to answer. When Oedipus solved the riddle (Man - he
crawls on all fours as a baby, then walks on two feet as an adult, and walks
with a cane in old age), she threw herself from her high rock and died.
The Divine Comedy
===================
In Dante's Purgatorio, Dante actually encounters the Whore of Babylon. After
this encounter, Beatrice steps up to him and tells him that someday the Whore
will be punished in a rather...overly brutal and highly unlikely way. She
admits that her words sound too much like a riddle by comparing them to those
of the Sphinx (Canto XXXIII ~ Line 46).
*******************************
Alkmaion (proper: Alcmaeon)
*******************************
Rengoku: The Tower of Purgatory
=================================
Alkmaion is the 6th level master and is associated with Gluttony. He is
definitely self-aware, though he isn't presented with a chance to discuss
properly. When given the chance, he openly denies the existence of a 'self' in
himself and every other android. Alkmaion is a mid to long-range fighter
equipped with a variety of different weapons, allowing him to overcome any
opponent.
History/Mythology
===================
According to Greek Mythology, Alcmaeon, having been betrayed by his mother so
she could obtain certain artifacts, avenged himself by killing her. Due to his
deed, he was pursued by the Erinyes (demons who pursue those who commit great
sins, personifications of regret) and driven mad. He was murdered years later,
while trying to retrieve the same artifacts that his mother had betrayed him
for.
The Divine Comedy
===================
In Dante's Purgatorio, while Dante is following a long paved path leading to
the 2nd terrace of Purgatory, he experiences lots of different visions
depicting various pagan deities and figures from history/mythology. In one of
them, Dante has to witness a reenactment of Alcmaeon murdering his mother
(Canto XII ~ Lines 49-51).
***********
Statius
***********
Rengoku: The Tower of Purgatory
=================================
Statius is the 7th level master and is associated with Lust. As expected, he is
self-aware and very knowledgeable when it comes to the tower and the outside
world. Although he knows that there are no longer any spectators to watch the
battles, he continues fighting because he believes he has no other purpose.
Statius is an all-rounded fighter, but particularly deadly up close where he
can make use of his EMP and stun gun.
History/Mythology
===================
Statius was a prodigal Roman poet famous for being amongst the greatest of
imperial flatterers. After he failed to receive the coveted chaplet of oak
leaves at the great Capitoline poetry competition, Statius fell in despair
and retired to his ancestral home. He died shortly after.
The Divine Comedy
===================
In Dante's Purgatorio, Dante and Virgil meet Statius on the 5th terrace of
Purgatory. He had just been purged from his sins and was ready to ascend to
Heaven (Canto XXI). Statius accompanies Virgil and Dante for the rest of their
journey.
***********
Gryphus
***********
Rengoku: The Tower of Purgatory
=================================
Gryphus is the 8th level master and is associated with the Garden of Eden. He
is the blood-red android that defeated Type01. He is, of course, self-aware and
claims that he has accumulated vast knowledge over the years. He knows that
everything happening in the tower is pointless but due to his rather fatalistic
attitude and sense of duty he doesn't want to abandon his post as a guard to
the top of the tower. Gryphus is a very well balanced fighter, able to fit any
fighting style and overcome any situation.
History/Mythology
===================
Gryphus is a reference to 'Griffin'. The griffin is a legendary creature with
the body of a lion and the head, wings and forelimbs of an eagle. Since the
lion is regarded as the king of beasts and the eagle as the king of birds, it
is natural that their combination would be regarded as a most majestic
creature. In antiquity it was a symbol of divine power and a guardian of the
divine.
The Divine Comedy
===================
In Dante's Purgatorio, a blood-red griffin is pulling the chariot that carries
Beatrice (Cantos XXIX-XXXII). This event signals the end of Purgatorio.
*************
Deucalion
*************
Rengoku: The Tower of Purgatory
=================================
Deucalion is a giant computer (which partially looks like an android) that
monitors everything happening in the Tower of Purgatory and is responsible to a
certain extent for whatever happens in it. He considers himself a parent of all
the androids in the tower though he does treat them like playthings at times.
His ultimate purpose seems to be creating the ultimate battle android by having
the androids climb the entire tower and overcome the difficult battles that
await inside it. It seems that he has set a number of standards though, since
he rejects GRAM the first time they meet and accepts him after he has climbed
the tower once again. Before the final battle begins, Deucalion remarks that
GRAM's 'self' program is almost complete. No additional information is provided
concerning this matter. After the final battle, GRAM probably destroys him,
since something resembling a giant severed head can be seen lying on the floor
during the ending FMV. With Deucalion destroyed, it is unknown whether the
fighting inside the tower has ceased.
History/Mythology
===================
Deucalion is the character upon who the Christian Noah is based. After Zeus
decided to destroy humanity with the Deluge, Prometheus had his son Deucalion
build an ark for himself and his wife Pyrrha so that after nine days had passed
and the Deluge was over, Deucalion and Pyrrha would be among the surviving
humans. Once the deluge was over and the couple had made an offering to Zeus,
Deucalion consulted an oracle of Themis concerning the repopulation of the
Earth. He was told to cover his head and throw the bones of his mother behind
his shoulder. Deucalion and Pyrrha interpreted "mother" as Gaia, and "bones" as
rocks. They threw the rocks behind their shoulders and people were formed out
of them. Deucalion's rocks became men and Pyrrha's became women.

While hacking the game in order to see if I had found everything, I ran into
some lines of dialogue and 3 pieces of equipment that were apparently left out
of the game's finished version.
*******************
Unused Dialogue
*******************
Main Story:
=============
Here are some ideas and lines of dialogue that didn't make it in the final
product. Please note that most of the info below is based on speculation.
Event #1: Intro (Part I)
--------------------------
These lines appear at the very beginning (before GRAM encounters Mars) meaning
that this was supposed to be an intro of sorts. It begins with GRAM clearing
the 8th level and meeting Gryphus.
Gryphus:
"Back again, GRAM? It's been a while. Are you ready to challenge me again?"
GRAM:
"Again? I've got to get past. If you're gonna get in the way, I'll have no
choice but to eliminate you."
Gryphus:
"So you've "forgotten". It's a long way here from the base level after all,
defeating foes and gathering weapons. Sure I'll fight. It won't be the end
after all."
Event #1: Intro (Part II)
---------------------------
A battle between GRAM and Gryphus takes place and GRAM apparently loses. It
seems that Gryphus is extremely fast, "beyond the boundaries of physics" as
GRAM states. Hmmmm...
GRAM:
"That's too fast! It's impossible. Beyond the boundaries of physics!"
Gryphus:
"I told you it wouldn't be the end. Now you'll lose everything! Again!"
Event #1: Intro (Part III)
----------------------------
GRAM melts down and finds himself on the 0th level once again. This is probably
where you get the chance to name the main character.
GRAM:
"I can't remember anything. My memory's blank. I can only remember two things.
My ID name and my primary directive. To fight!"
Event #2: Battle with Alkmaion (Part I)
-----------------------------------------
The first time you encounter Alkmaion, his last line before you fight is: "The
only thing that sets us apart from one another is strength, fighting skills and
how many victories we have!". However, it seems that Alkmaion was supposed to
say something else after that.
Alkmaion:
"If it brings victory, I'll use prototype equipment if I have to!"
Event #2: Battle with Alkmaion (Part II)
------------------------------------------
It seems that Alkmaion's prototype equipment is none other than the "CD
Prototype" that is dropped by Gryphus during 1st Ascent. It seems that Alkmaion
was supposed to drop this instead of a Particle Cannon, meaning that Gryphus
would drop something else, most probably his elusive "Clockdown System".
GRAM:
"I've... I've seen this before. It's not that the android's moving faster. It's
my reaction speed being forcibly slowed down. That leg mounted unit must be
causing the interference."
Event #3: Unknown
-------------------
This line of text appears during 2nd Ascent, after Sphinx and before Statius.
I have no idea who it belongs to and when it is used, but it's probably GRAM.
GRAM:
"Why do you keep testing me Deucalion? What are you hoping to gain from my
strength?
Level completion:
===================
I believe this is obvious. I don't know why they decided to leave this out.
"Level x conquered by autonomous battle android."
(where x are numbers from 1 to 8)
"Permission to challenge level master granted."

Gravity Hammer & Gravity Ram Plus:

These weapons do not work, have unique appearance and you may only access them
by hacking the game. Check the Equipment List section for more info.
Clockdown System:
===================
This is Gryphus' elusive leg equipment, and it seems that the only way to
acquire it is by hacking the game. What's so special about it is that it
actually works. It is pretty much the same as the CD Prototype but the stun
effect lasts longer. Check the Equipment List section for more info.
