"One of the Most Enjoyable and Expansive Games to Hit the PSP"

When a review is written about Capcom's new Action/RPG title Monster Hunter Freedom for the Playstation Portable, you normally hear one of two things. Either you hear that the game was a well-made and enjoyable game for the PSP, or you hear that Monster Hunter should have stayed on the Playstation 2. In all actuality, there is truth in both of those statements.

First and foremost, the graphics: The graphics in Monster Hunter Freedom vary depending on which entity on the screen you are referring to. Environments are well done and smooth as a whole, yet get a bit sloppy at very close range. Characters are near-PS2 quality at any range. And the monsters in MHF are done just as well. While the font is a bit generic, is doesnt really detract from the game. The movies in the game are the exact quality of those used in the original Monster Hunter for PS2. (8/10)

Next, the control: This is one of the gripes I have with the game. The combat, when performed with any heavy weapon is slow and clunky. However, this is elimintated when smaller, faster weapons are used. The true problem with the control is the camera. As in most games, the angle of the camera affects how you move your character. And in MHF, it's the worst part of the game. The camera is unaffected by character movement, and only changes when forced to move with the d-pad, or recentered with the L button. (6/10)

Now up, the sound: This is the strongest point of the game if you have Dolby Digital headphones or Digital-enabled speakers hooked up to the system. The sound of movements and attacks are powerful and greatly add to the impact of the game. Monster sounds are done very well and are, at times, chilling. More voiceovers couldve helped, but that is the only setback here. (10/10)

Next, the enemies: Another strong point, MHF is abundant in every monster imaginable. From grazing herbavores to absolutely massive dragons, the monsters are varied, well made, and quite imposing. Many of the monsters are powerful and armed to the teeth, sometimes literally. The PSPs ability to render a couple of these 200-foot-tall bad guys is breathtaking. (10/10)

So overall, the game is enjoyable and well made on the PSP. I will admit that the game does better on the PS2, but what game doesnt do better on a console than a portable player?
