Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Tag Force

Review by gokugohangoten

"Tag Force is about to begin!"

Based on the top-rated animated series from Cartoon Network, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX is the first Yu-Gi-Oh! game for the PSP system. Up to four players can duel wireless in massive team competitions with all new characters, monsters and cards from the GX universe. The game also features a larger selection of cards than any previous Yu-Gi-Oh! video game, providing players with more choices in building their decks and new custom animations for each card as they are brought into play.

Tag Force is in my opinion, a great game. You start out as a Slifer Red student at Duel Academy. You can name yourself anything you want, and then its time to start playing the game. Every day you go to class at 8:00 A.M. This feature has a nice addition of giving you a tutorial of how to play Yugioh! when your first start playing. There are 3 different tiers of duelists in the game. Tier one being main characters like Jaden and Bastion. Tier two includes the characters that occasionally appear in the show, such as Professor Crowler and Damon. The third tier includes random people that they put in the game to make it more interesting.

GRAPHICS: 9/10. The graphics in this game are amazing! Check out screenshots on the web if you don't believe me. It has card animations that you can turn off, and little opponent-cut scenes during a duel that you can also take off. The duel field is excellent, and the way they show you your hand and cards is perfect. The only reason I gave this a 9/10 is because all of the characters look like chibis. (Short body, huge head) I'm not a huge fan of these, but you get used to it after a little while.

SOUNDS: 8/10. As far as video games go, this one has some sweet music to duel with. Still, I'd rather listen to my iPod, because I'm not a huge fan of sound on video games.

GAMEPLAY: 10/10. This game's gameplay is the best I have ever seen in a TCG video game. You can walk around and give people sandwiches so they become your friend, you can talk to them and see what they have to say, or you can simply duel them. Almost everyone accepts a duel when you ask them for one, although some characters in the game don't duel. There are not many like that though. On the duelfield the game just gets better, because you can battle weak duelists or good duelists. That's a major thing I love about the game. They start you out with a water deck that really is not good at all, but at the same time they don't force you to duel really good opponents. You choose who you duel, whether it be easy Slifers or hard Obelisks. This game has single dueling (like a regular duel) and tag dueling (2 VS.2). I think this feature is really cool. There is also a ‘Free Duel' section where you can duel anyone you've dueled in Story Mode. You can restrict yourself here to time limits going as low as 30 seconds per turn. You also can set the life points of both players, going as low as 2000 life points. In Free duel, you can either Tag Duel or Single Duel. You can also switch between two different banlists in the game. There is also a feature on your PSP that allows you to connect to the internet-and they used that to their advantage. There is a function that takes you straight to a website where you can download new cards and banlists onto your game. This way it never goes out of date!

STORY: 10/10. Konami got really creative with this one. You start out preparing for a Tag Force tournament, and you give various duelists their favorite sandwiches so they volunteer to be your partner. I can't reveal too much of the storyline, but it does follow the GX characters, not necessarily the same storyline though.

REPLAYABILITY AND PLAYTIME: 10/10. Another thing I love about this game is that you can speed through it, or take it slow. You can speed through the game once you make friends with a character, or you can take your time and duel people and slowly make a great deck. I usually quit a game after I beat the storyline, but this game is different. When you play through it more times, you unlock more packs and you can duel with more people.

CONCLUSION: The best Yugioh game released in America. Konami is starting to get it right, and this is definitely worth the money. Better than any PSP game or Yugioh game ever created. 10 out of 10 for sure.
