Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Tag Force
Review by Tifanity
"Yu-Gi-oh! On The GO!"
Now first I have to admit, I am not one of the biggest Yu-gi-oh fans out there, although I collect the cards. I also never bought any of the other Yugi games except this one. But I will have to also admit that this game is done really well and it was almost perfect and maybe to some, it is.
Storyline. Too keep things simple, this game is like a simulation/strategy game where you start as a kid, get to name him whatever you want and you go to an academy of duelists. There you learn the basics, meet new people, buy new cards, get partners and duel others. You have a total of over 90 days to complete before the big tournament which gives you more than enough time to learn everything about the game.
During each day, you can do a variety of things. One thing is of course going to class. There you learn more and more things on how to duel. You can also challenge people all over the map in a duel. Winning nets you DP, which is money used to buy items and cards. The variety of DP you get is depending on how you performed during a duel. It calculates, the time it took for you to win/lose the duel, how much damage you inflicted, etc.
DP is used to buy items as well, such as sandwiches. People all over the island, like sandwiches and by giving some specific characters these items, you get something nice back. Besides sandwiches, perhaps one thing I love about this game is the card shop. You can spend your DP there to buy packs of cards. It feels just like real life, where you buy a pack, open it up and hope for a super rare card. In this game, when you get a rare card, the name is in gold, the card flashes and a sound chimes, giving you this "awesome, I got a rare" feeling.
Graphics. This isn't the best looking game out there, but it is good enough for the PSP. The chibi like characters make them look adorable (especially the girls) and it gives this warmth feeling to the game. The dueling screen is just like you are playing a duel in real life and I think that is done absolutely beautifully. Another thing to mention is when you are dueling against an opponent, they show the actual character doing actions like drawing a card, declaring an attack or activating a spell card. This feature gives you the same feeling like watching the anime.
Controls. With a great step by step process on teaching you all the basics, the controls are easy to understand and easy to pick up. I have to give Konami credit for this part, they made it just like a real life classroom where they repeat and repeat stuff just in case you didn't get it the first time.
Music. Perhaps the only one single reason why this game to me, didn't get a perfect 10. The music is boring and pretty cheesy. Feels like I am playing a Nintendo game back in the 80's. And if you been reading up on my reviews, I am really picky when it comes to the music in a game.
Replay Value. Once you beaten the game, you will want to get ALL two thousand plus cards, then challenge friends and take time to experiment on new decks. Remember you might not be able to afford all the cards in Yu-gi-oh, but in this game you can. Make a deck, see how it plays, if it works, make it in real life!
Flaws. Besides the music, I really don't see much of any. Of course this game would of been perfect if there were no cards banned from using, but then you have to think about what happens when you challenge other people. Again, they made the game just like real life. What is banned in reality is also banned in the game.
Conclusion/Final words. Rent or buy? If you are a Yu-gi-oh fan, this is a must buy. The game keeps your mind thinking and it is great while on the train, bus or whatever transportation you take. It is also a game to keep you playing for hours and hours. If you own a PSP, this is one of the games that is a must have for your collection.
