Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters
Review by PS2Marinerfan
"Another great game in the R&C series!"
It's been a while since the PSP was originally released, and there were a few great games for it. However, High Impact Games has made a game that will surely reach that list of the greatest PSP games ever created. That game would be Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters. Now, some people might be pushed away from the game because the original developer of Ratchet and Clank, Insomniac Games, didn't really work on it. Be calm however, because High Impact Games has not let the die-hard R&C fans down, and have made a quality game for the PSP.
Story- 9/10
As usual, the storyline of Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters is of great quality. Almost every R&C game has a dramatic storyline, and plenty of jokes in between. Rating the storyline in comparison with the R&C games, I put it just behind the original Ratchet and Clank, and ahead of the rest. The basic plot is that a girl named Luna wants to take pictures of Ratchet, and during that time, she's captured. Ratchet feels compelled to go after her and save her, while Clank is somewhat worried about it. The plot quickly thickens, but there's not so much drama that it detracts from the funny side of the game. Fans of the series will for surely get all of the inside jokes; new players may take a while to pick up on it.
Controls- 8/10
This is where a lot of people were worried about the game. The previous four games were created on the PS2, so there two of the shoulder buttons and the right analog stick that wasn't on the PSP. High Impact Games has devised an interesting control scheme that doesn't stray too far from the controls on the PS2 versions. The only difference is that it takes some practice to high and long jump, and the camera controls can be a bit iffy at times. However, in most situations, that's not a problem. Strafing is also in the game, you use the d-pad to strafe left to right. New players may get these controls better than the veterans, but it won't take long to get used to it.
Gameplay- 9/10
Once again, High Impact Games did a very good job here. There are areas where you can just run and gun, other areas require you to get behind cover to stay alive. There are a few bosses in the game, and can be difficult. However, it is not so difficult that you'll want to throw your PSP against a wall. Trust me, throwing it doesn't make the boss any easier.
Sound- 10/10
Whoever did the score for this game is one of the best music creators in the world. The music for a lot of the levels just sound perfect in relation to the level. Calm areas will have soothing music, spots with lots of enemies will have upbeat and rockin' music. The music in R&C:SM actually beats all of the music from all 4 previous R&C games without a doubt.
Replay value- 9.5/10
Every Ratchet and Clank game has a lot of replay value; this one is no different. In order to get everything the single player storyline has to offer you've got to run through it at least three times, if not more. Lots of collectibles, lots of weapons, and new to the series, lots of different interchangeable sets of armor. The look of Ratchet will never be the same. Then there's the multiplayer. Unless you've got a lot of friends with PSP's, infrastructure is the mode of online to use. The different games and playing styles are extremely entertaining. You won't be bored with game for a while.
Conclusion
To put it in a quick summary, anyone who likes the R&C series, has a PSP, and has $40 to spend, this is a must have. The single player mode will keep you occupied for a long time, and when you eventually finish it, you can go to multiplayer mode. This is a quality Ratchet and Clank game, and High Impact Games did a very good job.
