Metal Gear Acid

Review by wolverinefan

"Another solid PSP title."

Metal Gear Acid was one of the launch titles on the PSP. Would it surprise you that I've owned the game since the first week it was out and just now finished it? Of course I owned it for a good 4 months before I even played it but that doesn't matter. Is Metal Gear Acid a must own PSP title or just some lame card title? Read on for the answer!

Snake has been called to an island to find an item. Mean while a plan has been hijacked by some killer dolls. I really can't go into any more details but let me say that this has a really complex plot that really confused me even to the last few moments. It's almost hard to follow with the twists and turns that it takes. This game easily has the best plot for any of the PSP games.

Graphic wise this game looks amazing. Character models look great, the art pictures look fantastic and the locations look rather detailed. The entire graphic department is impressive. It's one of those titles that you can show to friends and mak them go wow at the graphical power of the PSP. And then tell them that this was a launch title.

The sound in the game is top notch. Sound effects are right on for the series. No voice work which is a small disappointment but that's okay. The music was great and was something that really stuck in my head. I'd buy the soundtrack or acquire it if I could. I enjoyed it that much.

The game has rather simple controls but it's harder to back out of something so always choose slowly and cautiously. The control pretty much is just the d-pad, circle and x. Circle is confirm and x is cancel. Very easy to get the hang of.

Fans of the series will be in for a rude awakening when the game play kicks in. There are 14 locations. Each location is rather long. You pick the locations from a map and you can return to them if you want to.

Now, the idea behind the game is that you have cards that let you attack, equip a gun, use skills and move. You can only use so many cards in a turn. This all depends on how many points a card uses up ECT. It's also a good way to learn management skills because I constantly found myself running too low on cards at important times and after a few tries on a level I'd find myself doing much better at keeping cards in my hand.

So, we have cards for actions and while it isn't a new idea, it actually works rather smoothly. Only later when you have two people to take care of does it get a bit more hectic. The problems I always ran into were when I had to take care of cameras and bots.

Some of the levels are like mazes and are very complex. The game is well thought out though but it just isn't user friendly from the start. You really need to get the hang of it all.

You need to build your card decks though and thankfully it offers a build it for you feature. You can also buy new card packs and hope for new cards.

The game is long. It has 200+ cards to collect and a harder difficulty. That's a lot of game there and it's one of the longest PSP titles I've played. So you really do get your moneys worth with this title. I'd actually even replay it myself later on down the road. It might not be the best game for on the go but it's very good if you have the time to invest in it.

Metal gear Acid is the perfect title to show case the PSP. Even though it's a few years old, it still looks amazing. It might not be for everyone with its card theme but it works well and is one of the better PSP games out there. It's also really cheap by this point so I think it's worth at least renting if that option is possible for you.
