Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters

Review by Warhawk

"Going back to the roots of the series"

After a few successful outings on the PlayStation2, Ratchet & Clank finally make their way onto the PSP. I started playing the Ratchet & Clank games with the second game Ratchet & Clank Going Commando while at first I didn't know how I would enjoy the series when I purchased the game. At first I didn't care much for the games but after a while of playing I got into the series. Although the Ratchet & Clank franchise became on of my favorite series besides the Silent Hill franchise that I enjoy playing as well. What was it about the Ratchet & Clank games that made me get into the series? First thing was the variety of weaponry that you can use to blow stuff up and the amount of fun that you can have while playing through the Ratchet & Clank universe.

Graphics: 8.5 out of 10
With the previous Ratchet & Clank games on the PlayStation2, Size Matters goes back to the look of the first three installments of the series. While this game looks just like the PlayStation2 counterparts of the previous games in the series. The levels seem to be nicely detailed while not developed by Insomniac Games look to be like if they went and made a Ratchet game for the PSP.

Story: 8.3 out of 10
The plot of Size Matters doesn't seem to be as good as that we have seen in the other installments of the Ratchet & Clank games we've seen on the PlayStation2. Ratchet & Clank decided to take a long needed vacation from all the heroic events they've endeavored from their adventures. While on vacation a little girl starts taking pictures of the duo then gets abducted some time after meeting this little girl forcing the duo to endure another adventure.

Gameplay: 9.0 out of 10
Size Matters goes back to the roots of the first three games and what made the Ratchet & Clank franchise a franchise to be reckoned with in the first place. While using the formula that worked in those games and trying to make what worked on the PlayStation2 to work on the PSP made it a worth while to play this game to your hearts content. Sure with this game being for the PSP you don't have the extra 2 shoulder buttons to use in this game but you should be able to get used to trying to get through this game as best as possible. Even though that in this game there isn't that many boss fights only like 2 – 4 boss fights at most there could've been 5 at least to make it more challenging at most.

Sound: 8.4 out of 10
The sound department hasn't really changed all that much with a different developer in control of developing this title as good as the previous titles. All the weapons featured in the game have their nice little sound effects while the voice acting in the game seems to be just as good as from the other games.

Replay Value: 8.5 out of 10
While going through the game takes at around 5 to 8 hours to complete the game once but don't be alarmed though. Just like the other games in the series you'll be able to go through the game again in what is known as “challenge mode”. Of course there's still special bolts you can find throughout the game along with skill points to unlock cool stuff but how long will it take you to upgrade your health all the way and your weapons?

Overall: 8.6 out of 10
Ratchet & Clank Size Matters to me overall is how the Ratchet & Clank games should stick with what works in the end. While Ratchet Deadlocked seemed to be more of a side story in the series, so is this game; Size Matters takes the franchise back to the roots of Ratchet & Clank. This game may be short in terms of how long it takes to get through the game, don't let that pull you away cause if you enjoy the Ratchet & Clank games this is a game you should check out and hold you over ‘til Tools of Destruction.
