"One man's classic is another mans profit margain."

Overview: 7/10

Why put 2 games from the NES era with mediocre graphics 2 new dungeons (between both of them) and relatively no new content on 2 umds and release them seperately? One word... money.

Today I'm looking at the first of 3 titles that will be released in this and next quarter for the PSP.

The original final fantasy, remade on the PSP, sounds like a solid idea... yeah well maybe if square hadn't remade it twice in the last 5 years, the latter remakes being available on the DS via GBA port.

*sigh* all in all its a decent port, almost identical to the GBA port, the main differences are the PS1 intro and ending FMV (wow does square actually know how to make original content?) an extra dungeon and a few unlockables like pics and whatnot.

Graphics: 5/10

i say 5 because this is 2007, if a multi-billion dollar company is going to remake a classic, I expect up-to-date graphics, its games like this, that have graphics I've seen since the SNES that are killing the PSP.

The graphics look like a GBA game that wants to impress his big brother the DS, 99% dull 2D, with a few psuedo 3D sprites like chests that don't really give the illusion of effort square so desperately attempts to fake.

Even though the graphics were gimped, its still good, if you own a DS or even a GBA just buy dawn of souls because the GFX are not any better on the PSP port.

Sound: 8/10

Finally, something that actually separates this from the GBA version, the music, brilliant orchestrated BMG, although there aren't many tracks what more can we expect from square.

Gameplay 4/10

I was very dissapointed, FF 1 has always been annoying in that there is almost no storyline, square has made it very clear they don't plan to remedy this.

The class system is still very good however, when playing an RPG a player expects at least a vague idea as to WTF to do.

Unless you come to gamefaqs, expect to run around aimlessly at least 2 or 3 times .

That coupled with insane amounts of random battles make this game get tedious and annoying to people without patience, however anyone who's ever sat through rolling up and setting up a character for D&D will not be affected much

post statement:

If you own a GBA or DS just buy dawn of souls, you can probably find a used copy for under 20 bucks and you get 1 AND 2 whereas you only get 1 and it's almost identical to the GBA version.

I did a little research and found that even with all the "new" content FF1 anniversary edition only takes up just under 200 megabytes... on a UMD that holds almost 2 gigs, assuming that FF2 wont be 10 times larger...

Its common sense that this is just a game to make profit, if square actually cared about its customers we'd get both FF1 and 2 on a single UMD saving us $40

honestly if they cared we'd get a chrono trigger remake with 3D graphics to take advantage of it's battle system but that's just me...
