Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai - Another Road

Review by Dwaynewadefan

"One for the fans, and the fans only."

Lets open this review with one statement. This game is good. Atari finally got a good turn somewhere in their minds, and decided to spare us a game. I started watching DBZ when I was 5, and I'm almost 14 now. Now one thing I noticed from this game, is that you can't pick this up as a first timer. To tell the truth, I haven't played the first game, and I've heard its an OK game. If you really need a game to start up on, I suggest watching a bit of the Anime first, because you will NOT catch on very fast.

Story: 8/10
What a story. (Spoilers) So many endings! The story is that Trunks is competing in the world martial arts tournament, and the Supreme Kai and his assistant start talking to him, telling him he has great strength as a super saiyan. Then Babadi appears and all sorts of crap goes down. You fight Dabura, Majin Buu gets resurrected, The warriors come from the past and fight in the future. (End Spoilers)Overall the story had a couple of flaws, but it was nice to have something away from the TV show, even though you still need to have watched at least the Buu saga to understand.

Gameplay: 5/10
One real flaw here. Your first fight is chasing Dabura on the map, and making sure he doesn't destroy any cities.Ok, simple enough. You catch up with him, beat him to a pulp, and bada-bing, bada-boom. What? Oh, he's still alive. The thing is, once you beat someone, they get knocked backwards, then you repeat the chasing and the fighting. This gets annoying when there are 6-7 enemies (and growing) later in the game. I say that is their only flaw. But you have missions. Thats totally awesome, and you better do you missions, or you get cyber-grounded. Usually your missions are along the lines of "Don't let the East Village fall below 30% health." But they can also vary to timed missions, and just simply creaming your opponent. You can also set the stats for your characters. Thats something you have to see for yourself. Oh, by the way, Trunks finally gets to be the main character!!

Graphics: 9/10
Nothing perfect, but this was as close as possible for a portable system game. Then again, if you compare this to the PS2 games, the words "Same Old Same Old" Come to mind. Whatever, nothing new in the graphics department.

Sound: 6/10
I prefer "OFF" mode. Its really annoying sometimes, just to hear random people in the battle shouting "NO!"I mean, simple background music could have earned a 10, but no, Atari had to go with the fancy grunting. Sometimes I turn it on just to see if the voice overs are on, but usually they aren't. Voice overs are what drags you into actually reading the text we all love to skip.

Controls: 10/10
If you have played any previous Dragon Ball Z game, you will catch on fast as ever. Spend 10 minutes in training though. Hell, I spend days in training, planning out new ways to destroy my friends. Controls haven't changed, much like the lower aspects of this game.

Overall, this game is nice for the fans, but only the fans. If you haven't rented or bought the first one, then thats OK. It doesn't continue from the first one, or at least I don't think it does. I'm just still mad Trunks will never get to SSJ2. So, I took a risk,I bought this game without renting, but I loved it. I did some thinking, and decided to ask around, and read the other great reviews on here. I also took another risk, by writing this review. This was my first review, and I guess it shows.Well, there is a first time for everything. Remember, if your not sure, don't be stupid like I was. Just rent it first, but don't play too much, or there would be no point of buying it. Also, it helps to have friends to play with, so you don't get bored after 100% Game and city protection.
