Monster Hunter Freedom 2

Review by ConCeal12

"Back to hunting again!!"

Through many peoples eyes, MH should be on the top of the list for the best psp game... and the longest. People play for more than 100 hours and there not even done with the game or seen what other things it has in store. If your still not done with that yet... then to bad, put it down and get ready for Monster Hunters newest installment.

Graphics
Alright I'll start this off where the game has done good once before. The graphics are the best I've seen in a psp game. They added more armors, weapons, stages, and monsters. When you go to your first mission you will get a great "wow" view of the area. Just looking up is going to feel like your playing a PS2 game. The shadow effects, falling snow, rain and the look of the environment look excellent. The monsters and characters are all made flawlessly, which matches the game, and they seem to show some improvement from the previous one. So basically if your a person who is looking forward to good graphics on a game, this wont disappoint.

Controls
Much didn't change from the last one really... You move your character using the analog stick. The camera is moves by the d-pad. Tapping the L trigger will center the camera, and to scroll through items in your inventory, hold L. The R trigger is use for running and blocking or to do special ability's depending on the weapon. The X button makes you do a dodge roll or jump backwards. Triangle is to unsheathe and attack, or if your running, you'll just take it out and do a quick swing. Square is to use an item from your inventory or to sheath your weapon. And the O button is used depending on which weapon you got, but is usually used to make another attack. Pressing Triangle and O together will do the weapons special attack. The controls all work well with the game. The controls were the same from last time so people who played the previous MH won't have a problem with this. And newcomers will adapt to the controls quickly for the controls are easy to use.

Gameplay
Just like the other Monster Hunter games back then... There is A LOT to do in this one, and a lot to talk about. Most of the monsters from the 1st MH are here, and there are more, like Congalala which is a monkey like boss in the jungle. And we are able to make our way further back to the past, there are dinosaur bosses in the game too like Tigrex which is the new mascot for Monster hunter (previous mascot for MH was Rathalos, well thats what I think). And if you have a save game from the previous MH, you are able to transfer your character into the game! Your name will be imported and you can reset you characters appearance. Your items above the rarity of 3 will be traded for tickets depending on their rarity. And you can keep items below the rarity of 3 unless its not available in MH2, those that cannot be imported will be sold for money. A portion of you money will be imported as well, and you will unlock a movie explaining why your not in Kokoto (the previous village you lived in). Like last time, you have options on how to take down a monster, either plant traps and try to lure it into one, or just rush in and go for the kill. The fact that you can pick your own strategies take down a monster is a great idea. Although I cannot tell you much about the monsters, thats what your going have to find out on your own. There are new weapons on this installment. There are bows and arrows, a long sword(its lighter and faster than the great sword), a gunlance which combines range attacks with melee attacks, and a hunting horn that works like a hammer, but you could play notes that do different things depending on how you combine them. Just like last time, you customize your characters face, hair, voice, skin color, and default clothing color. You will start of with all the types of weapons and one set of armor, and to improve your armor and weapons you have to do quests to earn money. And while you do that you must kill monsters and use there scales, hides, and talons to create or improve new weapon and armor. And if you want help during your quests, you could have a friend help you in your quest by connecting using ad-hoc. There are many types of quests, like gathering, hunting, or capturing. To do a gathering quest... well, you gather stuff that you are required to get. For hunting you must track the monster down all the way to make sure it will never get up again. For capturing its not that easy, you have to make the monster get to a point where its weak and then tranquilize after you put it in a trap. This quest only applies to the boss monsters. There are also a massive amount of items in the game, most of the items from the previous game of here of course, but because of the new monsters and levels, there will be more bugs and plants, more things to carve off the new monsters and more combinations in the game. This thing just keeps coming and coming. This game will keep will keep you busy for the longest time and I bet it will stay in your UMD door for days. Really great!

Camera
The camera is good and fits in when your fighting a monster(s). If the monster starts flying, look up, if the monster rams you but fails, look backward. All works well, but there are some people who complain about the fact that there is no lock on, even for bows or guns. I think this is just something you have to learn how to do yourself because battles would be to easy if there was a lock on right? Also the camera problem that happens when you are against the wall is fixed in a way. When you get knocked to a wall, the camera zooms out a bit so you could see clearly. Anyway the camera works as well as any other game and there won't be to much problems during a fight.

Audio
Really nice... You can hear the rivers flowing, monsters moving, a bullfango sprinting to ram you off the cliff. Yup it all fits right into the game. Also the music pops up depending on your situation, like when a big monster spots you it will a sudden noise meaning you've been spotted. The music works really well with everything in here. But for the best sound quality you should use earphones, it sounds better with them than without it really...

Multiplayer
There is a multiplayer in here and its works all good. You are able to play with four players simultaneously and since its multiplayer you also could be tactical. Like there is a gunner in the back with recovery and strength increasing rounds that he could use to buff you guys up without using a potion yourself and making yourself vulnerable for a attack. Sometimes you actually need your friends to finish your quests, like the annoying egg gathering quest. Its really fun having a friend helping you kill a monster. Its more faster and you both get an even share of the monster. Especially if your friend has been playing for a long time, then he could help you get good items really early. The fact that you have multiplayer available is a great advantage for everyone to have some support to take something down. It works perfectly as well.

Play time
In order to actually finish every single quest in the game you have to play at least 200hrs really. Because you cant go to a harder quest just as you are, you still have to gather and kill all these kinds of monsters to get the items you need to improve your weapon and armor. Then once you kill that monster your going to have to challenge a harder one and your back to gathering again. This game really is that long... and once your done with the quests you next lock is to get the best armors and weapons out there. Anyway good luck with that, cause this will keep you busy for the longest time. Probably the longest game you'll play on the psp.

Overall
A Great game with only a few minor flaws. This is another great edition to this series and really worth playing. If you want my opinion you have to own this game. You wouldn't do much if you just rent it. Besides there is so much to do, the controls are great, the multiplayer is fun, there is lots of places to explore. This game has a lot in store for those who try it out. Its a really fun game, I give it a......
