Madden NFL 08

Review by StarOceaner

"Madden returns for the 2008 season"

Madden returns for the 2008 season with brand new roster updates, and brand new features that are sure to amaze.

The PSP version was fun, although the graphics looked weird. All the players on the field look like they were made out of cubes, similar to the graphics used in the PS1 games. Although the graphics weren't as pleasant, and the players look nothing like their real life selves, it is totally phased by all of the other qualities.

The camera was terrible. On offense, you will pass the ball far down the field. During that time, you can control a player and then run and catch the ball manually and run for the touchdown. It's very hard because the camera does not move as fast and you'll end up running past the yellow circle to catch the ball.

The controls may not be the easiest of all. If you are more comfortable with the PS2, Wii, or Xbox 360 version, this one is a whole lot different. There are no L2 or R2 buttons and there is no R3 button, or the right analog stick, if you prefer. The controls take about 10 minutes to get used to them, and after that it's smooth sailing from there.

Custom soundtrack is not an option for the PSP version, but the music in the game totally makes up for it. From Ozzy Osbourne to favorite NFL classics, you can listen to the music and enjoy it. The commentary is great, and doesn't feel repetitive. The commentators comment on everything that goes on, and even if you keep doing the same continuous plays, they'll spice it up and make it sound like a different play. They'll comment on players, formation, coaches, everything.

Online mode is terrific. You can either play against a friend, or you can play across the internet with another person. You can create your own profile, or use the same one that you used from previous games by EA, and build your reputation and make it to the leader boards. There are lots of different games to play, and tons of different skill levels to play against. This is a great title for online play.

Franchise mode is basically like season mode. You play your preseason games and then move on to your 17 week season. After that, if you're lucky, you'll make it to the playoffs and hopefully win the Super Bowl.

Before the preseason even begins, you can participate in these special camps to build up the players attributes. They'll have you doing everything you'd do in the game including some brand new features added.

If you really enjoy the mini camp, you can play them in the game modes section, and even have a competition to try and get a high score.

Brand new features added are the most notable, precision passing. When you use precision passing, you tilt the analog stick and throw to the receiver you want to throw it to. It's a great new feature but doesn't work quite well with the camera.

Superstar challenge is great. You can play as an NFL team and then complete objectives that had happened in the previous season. They are really easy and really fun to play. You will have 5 tiers and inside each will be 5 different challenges. That makes 25 challenges which really isn't a lot. Despite that, it is extremely fun to play and it is a great addition.

Overall the game is great. The controls are a little sloppy and the camera is terrible but overall Madden was able to pull through with another great season, and another great PSP sports title. And the load times aren't even that long! I highly recommend Madden, especially to those football fans, but even to just regular sports fans. You don't have to be a huge football fanatic to enjoy this title, and this game will have you playing it, until Madden 09 comes out.
