Midway Arcade Treasures: Extended Play
Review by MiltonBradley
"Great Classic Arcade Games on One UMD!"
I stumbled across this forgotten title and notice the wide number of games on here. The first thing I saw was PAPERBOY!
I continued reading and saw Gauntlet, Spy Hunter, Mortal Kombat, MK2, MK3 and Rampage. The price was right($45 CDN) so I quickly picked it up.
I must say, this is the most impressive arcade collection game I've have seen, not counting the Midway Classics for the home consoles like PS2 and the X-Box. So how well does the games perform? Very well, like if you were playing the actual arcade...well sort of. There's the odd loading times here and there. Nothing too long, just odd for 16-bit games.
Games like Mortal Kombat and Paperboy were done very well. It didn't feel cheap or rushed out. Digital Eclipse did a wonderful job at sound emulation and controls. Finally, we get a true Paperboy portable game. After a series of Game Boy attempts including the recent awful sounds GBA version, the PSP version is at its best. Spy Hunter is all there with the famous Peter Gunn theme song(yay!)
Digital Eclipse has also added game options to each game. You can change the game's difficulty, the number of lives, time limit and other misc features.
Although after playing the Mortal Kombat games, the sounds were really loud and the AI seems to throw cheap moves at you. I love playing as Scorpion and do my favorite spear throwing cheap move at the CPU but unfortunately, the AIs knows your dirty tricks and starts fighting dirty too.
Regardless, this arcade collection is well worth picking up especially the old favorites and of course the Mortal Kombat games. Hopefully, Digital Eclipses will do another one and add the cult classic Smash TV.
Overall, I'm giving this collection an 8 out of 10.
Pros:
+ Your favorite arcade games on one UMD!
+ Games like Spy Hunter and Paperboy are fully emulated unlike the previous GBA ports
+ Extra game options allowing you to change the number of lives to the game's difficulty
+ Great Sound!
Cons:
- Mortal Kombat AIs seems to be really cheap, throwing you a couple of quick punches to finish the round
- Loading times...even though they're short and reasonable with the amount of games on here, it just feels out of place
- No Smash TV!?
