Lumines

Review by bruceleesmaster

"I've had this game for about five months now and it has been a journey. Full of fun, joy, anger, and a little tears."

If I had to describe this game in one word I would have to say: addicting. It doesn't really catch you with out-of-this-world visuals or music. The visuals and music are great but if that was all this game had to offer I would probably give it a 6 or 7. The whole experience is what makes this game so great. Finally getting past the first few levels, getting a huge combo, realizing you can get past level 100, after two hours of playing finally getting that high score you have tried to get for the past week.

Story: N/A

This game doesn't have a story. The good thing about that though is if you have a little imagination, you can make the story whatever you want. The story could be that blocks are falling down from the sky and you have to arrange them so they don't build up and if you get game over the world will explode. Or you are trying to impress your girlfriend/boyfriend and if you get a high enough score, she/he will kiss you (or something else, remember it's all in your imagination) The possibilities for the story are as limitless as your mind.

Visuals: 8/10

Visuals aren't very important in a puzzle game but they do help. The first couple times of playing all you will see is falling blocks. But after awhile you start to see things you never noticed which make the game more enjoyable. Like how your character will start to look nervous, when you are losing, and how the background changes by how you play.

Music: 9/10

Music may not be important in some games, but in this game it was critical. The music in this game is one thing makes it so special. I remember many days where I would have at least Lumines song stuck in my head. The musical score isn't perfect, but at least none of the songs annoy me, which would have been a very bad thing.

Gameplay: 10/10

The gameplay for this game is pretty basic. You have a square consisting of four blocks, each block can be one of two colors, the colors depend on the level. You have to put the blocks together to make a square of the same color. And their is a line going across the screen and as soon as the line passes through your square of all the same color, it is deleted. It is way harder to explain then to just play and find out for yourself. Then why do you ask why I gave gameplay a 10? Because it is just so f-ing addicting. That is the only way I can describe it. The combo system is great and makes so you feel so accomplished while you are playing. It is so easy to just pick and play. If you just notice the patterns of how you have to position the blocks you will get better.

Sound FX: 9/10

When people talk about this game, they don't usually talk about the sound FX. But, the sound FX to me is a part of what makes this game so addicting. I don't really have much emotion about the sound effects I just think are pretty cool. Sorry.

Overall: 9/10

Overall, this is a great gaming experience that will always have you coming back for more. If you have a PSP you should definitely check this game out. Any of your doubts about how addicting this game is will be erased from your mind once you start playing. Unless your one of those people who sucks at puzzle games. Their is no hope for you to persevere if any part of life if you have that problem.
