Now I've got all the token stuff out of the way, let's roll!
Welcome to Christopher Hyde's Ape Escape Walkthrough. For this
guide, I have been using the European version of the game (PAL).
The US version of the game is very different. It has different
level names, different monkey names and descriptions and Buzz is
called Jake. I think people using this version should be able to
use the guide without too much trouble.

My name is Christopher Hyde and this is my second FAQ that I have
written (see section 6G for details on my others).  I decided to
write the FAQ because Ape Escape is a brilliant game and provided
me with many months of challenges (such as catching those last few
elusive monkeys and getting gold on all the Time Attacks).

Anyway, that is the end of the first few sections and now comes the
beginner's guide to Ape Escape.  This section basically covers the
essential gameplaying and, if you are on Time Period 3 by now, you
should know the stuff covered in this section, so you don't really
need to use this section.

A young monkey named Specter was bored. He was tired of his cramped
cage with the familiar sights...young children, poking their
fingers through the bars at him...couples in love, with the man
putting his fingers near Specter's mouth in an attempt to show his
lady friend how brave he is by putting his hand so close to the
monkey's mouth...old men, complaining about the fact that "in the
old days, children used to respect their elders - and you certainly
didn't get monkeys looking like that"... he was sick of it. One
day, he discovered an old man, who had been scribbling notes down
from the information board outside Specter's cage and muttering
things to himself, had forgotten something. He had dropped a shiny
hat. Specter reached out for the hat - he loved shiny things.
However, it was too far from the bars for him to reach. Desperate,
he rummaged around in the straw at the back of his cage and
discovered a twig. He used the twig to nudge the helmet towards
him...there, he could reach it. Specter reached out for it and got
it in his paws. He ducked down to put it on and the helmet
reflected in his eye, the one not covered by a tuft of fur. He
looked up again, triumphantly wearing the helmet. This time, his
eye was narrow and cold. Evil malice gleamed from it.
"Finally, it is the time for the apes to rebel!" he screamed at the
top of his voice. Several passers-by turned to look at him as he
charged at the bars of his cage like a bull. The ultra-strong metal
of the helmet made the bars burst outwards.
Specter ran around the amusement park, freeing all his monkey
friends from their cells. They all ran for the exit and escaped.
"Quick! To the nearest building!" cried Specter, in between puffs
of breath.
The nearest building just happened to be the laboratory of the man
who had created such a monstrosity...The Professor.
The Professor had been working for many years in an attempt to
discover the secrets of time travel. He is now close to achieving
this goal as his Time Station is nearing completion. The Professor,
who is a kind man at heart, has agreed to let two of his
granddaughter Katie's friends be the first ever time travellers.
The Professor was expecting a knock at the door to signal the
arrival of Spike and Buzz, the boys destined to be the first time
travellers. He was rummaging around the laboratory trying to find
his Peak Point Helmet, listening for the knock. He couldn't find it
anywhere and, just as he was about to give up hope, heard the
knock.
The Peak Point helmet was designed with one purpose - intelligence.
It increased the human IQ, but on a monkey, the results were
disastrous, as the Professor will shortly find out.
"Katie, carry on looking for me." he asked his 14 year old
granddaughter as he headed towards the door. He opened it.
"Spike, Buzz, what a pleasure to see...eh, what's up?" he asked,
half to himself. He had been expecting a couple of 10 year old
boys. Instead, he was confronted with an ape army.
"Get him!" screamed Specter.
"That's my..that's my..my hat! He's got my hat!" the Professor
cried out as several apes hurled themselves at him, binding his
arms and legs.
"Grandfather!" shrieked Katie, as more apes detached themselves
from the army and tied her up.
Specter began chuckling to himself, a deep, evil laugh.
He ran to the Time Station, still chortling and leapt into the
Station. The monkeys began following him.
Suddenly, the door banged open. Spike and Buzz were in the doorway.
"What the..Professor! Katie!" Buzz exclaimed, as he realised the
situation. He ran over to free the Professor but -
"No, Buzz!" the Professor warned as Buzz reached down to free him.
"You'll get sucked into the vortex!"
He was right. Buzz was getting sucked in, too.
"Buzz! No!" Spike cried. He ran towards Buzz and reached out for
him in a futile attempt to free him...
"Buzz! Spike!" Katie yelled as they were both sucked into the
vortex. The last monkey shrugged and leapt in too. There was a
blinding flash of light and the vortex closed.
Spike and Buzz are alone, trapped in time as Specter attempts to
change history. Can you help them escape?

SPIKE -
Sex - M.
Age - 10.
Height - 135cm.
Weight - 32kg.
Spike loves hanging round the Professor's lab to see what the old
man might come up with next. When he learned that the Professor had
completed the construction of the world's first time machine, Spike
couldn't wait to see it!

THE PROFESSOR -
Sex - M.
Age - 60.
Height - 170cm.
Weight - 80kg.
Since he was a child, the Professor has loved tinkering with
gadgets. Now he's growing older he tends to be a little careless,
leaving his experiments lying around for anyone to stumble across.
He relies on his granddaughter, Katie, to make sure he doesn't get
himself - or anyone else - into trouble. Though he's worried about
Spike, he's secretly thrilled that the Time Station works!

KATIE -
Sex - F.
Age - 14.
Height - 155cm.
Weight - ?kg.
Katie lives with her grandfather and tries to keep him out of
trouble. She's very impatient and her grandfather's untidiness
annoys her, though not as much as Spike, as he is always getting in
her way, but she is still friends with him. She's brilliant with
computers and both Spike and the Professor are relying on Katie to
keep the Time Station working long enough for Spike to make it home
safely.

BUZZ/JAKE -
Sex - M.
Age - 10.
Height - 138cm.
Weight - 34kg.
Spike and Buzz have always enjoyed a little good-natured rivalry,
so it's not surprising that they both want to be the first into the
Time Station. But while Spike tries to save the world from the
monkeys, Buzz is lost in the Time Vortex...where can he be? All
will be revealed during the game.

SPECTER -
Sex - M (presumably).
Age - 4 (human years).
Height - 125cm.
Weight - 28kg.
Specter used to live at the amusement park, where he'd keep people
entertained by performing tricks and getting up to mischief. But
this all changed when he found the Peak Point Helmet. He became
hyper-intelligent - and evil! Now all he wants is to rule the world
and Spike must stop him!

{  G.Controlling Spike.                                     }
 \---------------------------------------------------------/

Left stick -
Controls Spike's movements. Push gently to make him tiptoe; push it
a little further to make him walk; push it all the way to make him
run.
Right stick -
Controls Spike's gadgets. You can make them move forward, backward,
left, right or in a circle.
L3 button -                             (push the left stick in)
Hold this down to make Spike crawl so he can sneak up on
unsuspecting monkeys.
R3 button -                            (push the right stick in)
Whilst crawling, press this to make him curl up. This makes it even
harder for monkeys to spot him.
T(Triangle), [], O and X -
These act as gadget buttons. You can allocate each gadget a button
and then press the button to use the gadget. See the Pause menu
section for more details.
R1/R2 buttons -
Makes Spike jump. If you press the button twice, he performs a 2-
step double-jump. You can jump to grab hold of poles and trees and
then climb up and down them using the left stick. When you jump,
you can press the L3 button to make Spike do a Hip-Drop attack.
START button -
Press this to enter the Pause menu.
SELECT button -
Press this to enter the gadget selection screen quickly.
D-pad -
Revolves the camera around Spike.
L2 button -
Press this to enter first-person mode and look around in greater
detail.
L1 button -
Press this to centre the camera behind Spike.

STUN CLUB -
Gained - You have it at the start.
One of the first gadgets you'll get. Use the right stick to control
the movement of the Stun Club - it will strike in the direction you
press, or you can revolve the right stick to move the Stun Club in
a circular motion to protect yourself.

THE TIME NET -
Gained - You have it at the start.
An essential tool as you must use it to capture all the monkeys.
Like the Stun Club, you can swing the Time Net in any direction. If
you stun them first, they will be easier to catch.

THE WATER NET -
Gained - Before entering Raining Lake/Primordial Ooze.
The Water Net is slightly different to other gadgets as you cannot
assign it a button - it automatically appears when you go
underwater. You can swim around in the water, but remember to
resurface regularly for oxygen. To speed up, press the R1 button.
To dive while swimming, press L3. This will take you deeper and
deeper until you release it. Press R3 while underwater to fire a
monkey net. This helps catch monkeys underwater.

THE MONKEY RADAR -
Gained - Before entering Jungle River/Thick Jungle.
This is used to locate monkeys and find out information about them.
The radar can be turned with the right stick. The radar goes higher
in pitch when it has found a monkey and it will get louder when you
are near a monkey.
If the monkey is really close, you can press L2 to learn their
statistics.

THE SLINGSHOT -
Gained - Before entering Cryptic Relics.
The slingshot is used to destroy enemies from a safe distance. Pull
the right stick back to make Spike pull the elastic back and move
it about to guide the cross-hairs over the target and then release
it to fire. Use the L2 button to enter Target Mode, where you can
get a more accurate shot. You can also use the slingshot to hit
out-of-reach buttons and switches.
The slingshot uses 3 types of bullet;
Normal - You have an infinite amount of these bullets.
Flash - These explode on impact, causing greater damage than normal
bullets.
Guided - These have 3 rounds to one set.
Press R3 or O to select different types of bullet.

THE DASH HOOP -
Gained - Before entering Primitive Beach/Crabby Beach.
You can make this into a shield by rotating the right stick. When
it's a dash shield, you can bang into enemies and hurt them!

THE SKY FLYER -
Gained - Before entering Icicle Cave/Frosty Retreat.
The Sky Flyer enables you to jump higher than normal. Rotate the
right stick to make it fly. Keep rotating to fly over long
distances. You can also move around whilst flying.

THE RC CAR -
Gained - Before entering Urban City/City Park.
Press the R3 button or [] to call the RC car. The car is steered by
using the right stick. You can use it to defeat enemies, stun
monkeys, get through small gaps and trigger floor switches.
Note that you can use the RC car as a remote bomb! Send it to
wherever you want and then use your slingshot to shoot it from a
distance. This comes in very helpful for defeating some of the more
difficult enemies! Thanks to Troy for this.

THE MAGIC PUNCH -
Gained - After beating the game and getting the bad ending.
The Magic Punch is a fist that extends to hit enemies and smash
down doors. Several monkeys in the later stages are trapped in
glowing pods that can only be opened using this device.

{  I.The Time Station.                                      }
 \---------------------------------------------------------/

You return to this area after clearing a stage. The Time Station
contains many useful things. You can load/save your game, view the
Monkey Book, select a stage to enter, recap on the training and
play some cool mini-games.
I will explain each feature individually, except the mini-game
room, as it is so fun to play the games that I feel it should get
it's own section!
WARP SCREEN - Step onto the red floor switch in front of you to
enter the Warp Screen. From here, you can choose which levels you
want to enter or play on Time Attack mode. Select the stage you
wish to enter by pressing left or right on either the D-pad or the
left stick. Press X or O to enter that level, T or [] to return to
the Time Station or START to enter Time-Attack.
LOAD/SAVE - Step on the red floor switch behind you to save or load
a game. You can also view the Monkey Book, which has it's own
section in section 3.
TRAINING - You can revisit all the training scenarios here. The
training scenarios are the sections at the beginning of each level
when you get a new gadget.

{  J.Keeping Spike healthy.                                 }
 \---------------------------------------------------------/

Spike eats cookies to stay alive and collects extra lives in the
form of T-shirts and energy chips.
Cookies are how many attacks Spike can take before he dies. 5 is
the maximum amount you can have. Each time you get hit, 1 cookie is
removed. When all 5 are gone, you die.
Lives come in the form of T-shirts. You begin with 5 and more can
be gained by collecting the T-shirts scattered around the levels or
by gaining 100 energy chips.
Energy chips are golden and triangular. Larger ones with holes in
the centre are worth 10.

When you press START, you enter the Pause menu. From here, you can
press buttons to enter various screens.
T - Gadget.
O - Status.
X - Options.
[] - Exit.

Gadgets -
You can enter this screen by the process above, or you can press
SELECT to enter this screen immediately. You can allocate a gadget
to each button and use them from there

Status -
This shows you the stage number, the stage name, the best time, the
amount of Specter coins collected and the total and also the amount
of monkeys captured and how many left.

Options -
You can toggle things to your liking here. Not much use really.

Exit -
This lets you exit the level.

Specter's factory has been working overtime and hundreds of Peak
Point helmets are being produced!
The monkeys gain intelligence from these helmets and the siren on
top can help you. The light flashes depending on what mood the
monkey is in and helps you to decide when to catch a monkey.
Blue light means that the monkey is calm.
Yellow light means that the monkey is alert and on it's guard.
Red light means it can see you and is panicky. Be careful when they
are in this state - they may turn aggressive!

You can also learn the monkey's personality by its pants.
Yellow pants mean that this is a normal monkey.
Light blue pants mean that this monkey is gentle.
Red pants mean that this monkey is a strong attacker.
Blue pants mean that this monkey is a very fast runner.
White pants mean that the monkey has excellent balance.
Green pants mean that the monkey has strong vision.
Black pants mean trouble. These monkeys have an attitude problem.
They usually wear shades and carry weapons.

Section i - Section 1 layout.
This section is fairly easy to understand. I have listed the
monkey's names in alphabetical order. Alongside each one, it tells
you where to find them.
This also tells you the location of each Specter Coin. These are in
no particular order.

Blair - On raised grey rock.
Cruise - On grass to left of starting place.
Exocet - On a high cliff.
Fruity - Monkeying around near the steps.

Specter Coin #1 - On top of one of the trees.

Section A2 - Raining Lake/Primordial Ooze.

*MONKEYS - 06.
*COINS - 01.

B.C. - You can see him from the start. He is sitting next to a tree
stump. Even if you creep up, he runs away.
Champ - Take a swim in the lake. Go through the pass in between two
cliffs. Get out on the other side and climb up the steps to reach
him.
Imp - On a platform sticking out from a cliff, behind you from the
starting point.
Mermaid - Swimming in lake.
Sleepy - Also taking a dip in the lake.
Tum-Tum - Follow B.C. at the beginning. You'll spot this ape on a
platform on the left.

Specter Coin #1 - Under the island you start on.

need to get him off the Triceratops he's riding.

moving platform next to Jimnast.
Moo Baa - Riding Tyrannosaurus Rex in the lava-filled area.
Raquel - Cowering from the T-Rex right at the back of the lava
area.
Twitcher - Hides inside the Pterodactyl's eggshells. Use the club
to knock the shell he's in over, then catch him before he hits you,
he hides under another shell or the Pterodactyl catches you.

Specter Coin #1 - Above the slide near the Pterodactyl's nest. You
can reach it by jumping, or let the Pterodactyl pick you up (don't
worry - it doesn't take away any hit points). It will then drop you
into it.

vines. Hides in a big tree when approached.

Pierre - Can be found underneath the tree Kuturagi hides in. To
reach him, there are some steps in the cliff. Go down them and
Pierre can be found cooking something.
Skater - Found near the rolling boulders section. He tends to dash
for the safety of his UFO when approached.
Slacker - Climbing bars in first rafting section, with Colt.
Sneakers - Climbs around above the rolling boulders.
Spy - Also hides in the pitcher plants.
Xmas - Located near the camp. He hides in another of the large
trees.

Specter Coin #1 - Near the camp.

Specter Coin #3 - At the entrance to the first rafting section.

Section B2 - Dark Ruins.

Gretel - In a cavern in the underground temple.
Indiana - Inside structure. Can only be caught by going through the
underground temple.
Mash - In first ruins.
Sade - In golden coffin in watery temple. This only opens after you
defeat the guardian of the coffin.
Whizz - Runs away from you at the start of the level, then runs
around the enclosed structure on the higher platform.
Zzap - Activates the fans in the underground temple when you walk
towards him. Ways to get him are to either crawl or kamikaze him
from above (slowly creep up the thin walkway and bring him death
from above by jumping onto him and catching him).

Specter Coin #1 - On the slide in the first ruins.
Specter Coin #2 - Under the bridge in the underground temple.
Specter Coin #3 - On the thin walkway above the fan in the
underground ruins.
Specter Coin #4 - Before descending into the watery temple, go
through the doorway on the far side. There is a fenced ledge. This
has the final coin on.

Note on getting Barlow -
Several people have been having problems on getting this monkey.
The correct way to get is to catch enough monkeys in the level,
which will cause a button to become accessible in the room with the
lift in. Hitting the button opens a door that lets you into the
room, where you can catch the monkey and destroy the computer,
which in turn stops the lift, letting you get the ape at the
bottom.

same way as the Monkey Book in the actual game, except there
obviously isn't a photo. With each one, I have included a short
description of why each monkey got it's name e.g.

description, so I have left a few question marks in the description
area. If anyone knows why these monkeys are named with these names,
please e-mail me. See section 6F for information on who has

The Arcade has three games to play. Each of the games also has a 2-
player mode. You can't play these games until you get the amount of
Specter coins listed.

GAME #1 - SKI KIDS RACING
Coins needed - 10.
This is pretty fun. You choose a character (Spike, Buzz, Katie, the
Professor or a monkey - each is kinda like a sheet of paper
coloured in like these characters as they are two-dimensional).
Each stick controls each ski, so if you press the right stick
forward, that character will rotate on the spot anti-clockwise. The
best characters to pick are either Buzz or the monkey as they are
both good. Whatever you do, don't pick the Professor as he is, for
want of a better word, rubbish. There are several different courses
to play on as well.

GAME #2 - SPECTER BOXING
Coins needed - 20.
The worst of the mini-games. I don't really like this (probably
because I am bad at it). You enter a boxing match with your
opponent (with both being monkeys). The idea is to emerge
victorious after a few rounds.

GAME #3 - GALAXY MONKEY
Coins needed - 40.
Yes, it needs a lot of coins, but this is the best mini-game by
far. It is similar to the Space Invaders game, except it is in 3D.
Use the left stick to control the craft and the right stick to
fire. My favourite by miles.

This is the main race, in which you ski against a friend or with
the computer.
For strategies on racing, see the next two sections.

Section A6 - Operating methods.
1.Operating instructions.
-Move the right ski with the right stick and the left ski with the
left stick.
-Pushing the sticks forwards activates the jets. Tilting the sticks
towards each other brings the skis together.
2.Going faster with the right posture.
-With the skis together, lower your body and your speed will
increase.
3.Turn on one ski.
-To turn quickly, operate the jet on the outside ski only, while
using the brake on the inside jet.
4.Turbo charged skiing.
-If you ski with the skis together, the jet flame will sometimes
turn blue. If you keep on skiing this way, after a while the jet
flame will turn orange and the power of the jets increases.

Section A7 - Course strategies.
If anyone has got any good strategies for any of these courses,
please e-mail them to me!
The only real tips I have are:
Always keep on the inside of corners.
Sometimes it's best to slow down on corners.

Section A8 - Small cheats.
I have discovered one small cheat for this game (well, you probably
can't even call it a cheat).
When selecting a character, move the right stick around. The racer
currently highlighted will rotate around with the stick!

Section B1 - Start-up.
When you begin a game, you are faced with 3 options:

START
OPTION
QUIT

Start takes you to the game's main menu, where you choose modes of
play and characters etc.
Option lets you toggle with the game's settings, such as changing
the sound and the vibrations.
Quit takes you back to the Time Station.

Section B2 - Beginning a game.
You can play this mini-game in three different ways:
CHAMPIONSHIP
VS MODE
TRAINING
Championship mode pits you against increasingly harder foes, with
the aim being you beating the top monkey, Ty.
Vs mode lets you slug it out with a friend.
Training has you facing a punchbag to practice moves on.
There are also options underneath. Advice is tips on beating
enemies (see section B4) and Return lets you return to the start-up
screen.
B3 - Selecting a character.
The 5 characters you can choose at the start are:
Bruno   Fump   Henri   Marvie   Hitman
There is a way to gain more (see section B6)

Section B4 - Advice.
1.Press up to punch.
  Pull down first and up to punch harder.
2.Pull down to guard.
3.Move left or right to sway
4.To punch consecutively, the right timing is important.

Section B5 - Strategies.
If anyone has any good strategies for winning championship mode, or
anything else, please e-mail them to me.
One good strategy I have found is to rotate both sticks around, at
the same time, clockwise. This makes the ape you are controlling
use harder punches and he is also a moving target, making it
difficult for the foe to hit you.

Section B6 - Small cheats.
I have one minor cheat for this game:
When you beat Championship mode, the apes you have beaten will
become selectable characters. These extra apes are:
Frank   King   Ali   Sugaz   Ty   Biff   Glove   Don   Rage
Nazz    Bully  Duff  Punch

Section C1 - Start-up.
When you begin a game, you are faced with 5 options:

NORMAL PLAY.
3 MINUTE TIME ATTACK.
HOW TO.
OPTION.
QUIT.

Normal Play lets you choose whether to play a 1 player or 2 player
game.
3 Minute Time Attack lets you try and get the highest score
possible in 3 minutes.
How To tells you the basic controls of the game.
Option lets you toggle with the game's settings, such as changing
the sound and the vibrations.
Quit takes you back to the Time Station.

Section C2 - Beginning a game.
To play a 1 player or not to play a 1 player game, that is the
question.
You can play a 1 player game by pressing Start whilst Normal Play
is highlighted, then Start again to have a 1 player game.
Press Start while Normal Play is highlighted, then Start on player
2's control pad to play a 2 player game.
Highlight 3 Minute Time Attack then press Start to enter a game of
bashing aliens within 3 minutes.

Section C3 - Controls.
Left stick makes you move.
Right stick makes you fire.
The circles that have a P in them are power-ups. When you only have
a 1-way firepower, then picking up a power-up increases it to a 2-
way fire. The same happens when you have a 2-way, bringing it up to
a 3-way. After that, each one got earns you 500 points.

Section C4 - Scoring.

NAME       | SCORE
Bloata     | 200 points.
Tentacus   | 400 points
Tocus      | 800 points.
Spheroids  | 5024 points.
UFOs       | 100 points.

Section C5 - Strategies.
Zip round the screen as fast as you can, avoiding enemies.
When a red line appears at the side of a screen (indicating an
enemy will approach from that direction), get to the other side of
the screen to get away from it.
Always, ALWAYS get the power-ups.
Try and defeat the Spheroids when they appear, as you get LOTS of
points.

Section C6 - Small cheats.
I have found a pretty effective 'cheat' for this game:
When trying to get a high-score, begin a 2-player game. With 2
players, you can get the majority of the enemies and player 2 can
watch your back.
Using this, I got double what my high-score was previously!


SECTION NUMBER 6 - THE LAST FEW THINGS.

Here is a list of monkeys with the highest points in several
categories.

Highest Level Award - This is a tie between Rik and Si of Specter's
Factory, as they both have a Level 7.

Fastest Runner Award - Several monkeys have achieved a rating of 5
in this category, such as Tyson of Specter Land and Donkey of
Tranquil Temple/Sushi Temple.

Most Powerful Award - Monkeys who have a 5 in this category include
Tyson of Specter Land and Billie of The Great Wall/Wabi Sabi Wall.

Most Alert Award - Tyson, Junior and Slime are examples of alert
monkeys.

Most Awards Award - Tyson of Specter Land wins this award.

Specter's Favourite Ape Award - This goes to Creep of Jungle
River/Thick Jungle who carried on worshipping Specter, even when
Specter ignored him.

There is only one cheat for Ape Escape that genuinely works:

To get 99 explosive bullets, type in R2, D, L2, U, R, D, R, L.

I have discovered a few hidden things, but they're not really
cheats.
i.Leave Spike standing still for a while. He will do one of a
variety of things, such as playing with one of the gadgets or even
lying down and going to sleep!
ii.Once you gain the Monkey Radar, you can view each monkey's
statistics. Move the right stick to change the camera angle.
iii.On the Jungle River/Thick Jungle level, there are some plants
that swallow you. Once swallowed, rotate the right stick quickly.
The plant will disintegrate.
iv.The RC car can be used as a bomb. Simply place it near an ape
and hit it with the stun club. It'll explode, leaving a dazed
monkey, which can be easily captured!
v.A good way to save lives, which I find a bit stupid, is, once
you've fallen off a cliff, pause the game and select Quit to exit
the level. Yes, this'll save you a life, but you then have to trek
all the way back to where you fell off, which, if it is near the
end of a big level eg Specter Land, can be a pain!
