"An average game from Eidos that plays quite similar to Street of Rage!!!"
With a strong lineup of games for the second half of the year, 1997 like Tomb Raider 2, Ninja etc, it seems like Fighting Force is on the right track for an October release in 1997, just like the other two games but it turns out to be a disappointing game.
You take control of any four characters- Hawk, Smasher, Mace or Alana. It's a two player game and your job is to kill the vicious Dr Zeng, a biological scientist who wants to annhiliate all life-forms- A very standard and typical storyline.
The game plays quite similar to Street of the Rage or Final Fight and is basically a 3-D update of these classic games. Enviroments are polygonal but cameras are fixed and cannot be rotated. Each character has some unique moves and there are about 7 different settings divided into 25 different sub-levels. Nothing really innovative! Just kill whoever gets in your way by using your moves or smashed every obstacle that's in your way such as window panes, rubbish bins, vending machines etc. Up to a maximum of 4 enemies can be seen on the screen without suffering much slowdowns. Characters have special attack too and it costs quite a bit of your life if you use it.
The graphics are generally average. There aren't many polygonal pop-ups. Obstacles like window panes, rubbish bins, vending machines can be smashed, thus creates better realistism. And, i have to admit that the designers have done quite well.
The music is rather average. The sound is pretty good. All the window cracking sounds, gunshooting, punches and kicks etc can be heard quite clearly.
The control is quite responsive and intuitive but why did Eidos add a useless jump button? You don't really use the jump button much in the game.
The gameplay is where the game suffers. The game starts off quite fun and rather addictive but after a few levels, it gets tired easily. All the while, simply do some punching, kicking and perhaps do some occasionally nice combos. This leads to very little variations. I do like the idea of smashing things, whether it is rubbish bin or blowing up cars. Still, it can't provide enough fun as the enviroments seem too restricted, not giving enough explorations that 2-D games like Street of the Rage can offer. Why? There's barrier around...you will know it.
Even with two player game, it still gets boring, with a lack of challenges and variations. Furthermore, the loading is SUPER-LONG, especially when the game is loading for the next level. It reminds me of the long loadings found in Contra: Legacy of war. It's quite hard to believe that the loading is still long. Hey, Fighting Force isn't one of the first generation games compared to Contra: Legacy of War. Eidos certainly has to work extra hard on that.
Overall, Fighting Force is an average 3-D game. If Eidos can add more challenges to the game by including a more variety of enemies, more moves and weapons and most importantly, get rid of those long loading times, it will perhaps have a better score.
