"Forget RR4 & NSF 4, Gran Turismo Is Still the Best Racing Game Ever"
166 real life cars, 11 tracks, 24 license tests, arcade and simulation modes, numerous tournaments, a landmark replay mode and featuring cars from eight different manufacturers, Gran Turismo is the most advanced, most comprehensive and best racing video ever, BAR NONE. Forget NSF 4 or Ridge Racer Type 4, Gran Turismo almost has it all!
GAMEPLAY: Gran Turismo offers two different modes of gameplay: arcade and simulation. Arcade mode introduces the gamer to a unique experience of lightning fast gameplay intermixed with great competition by computer driven cars. Eight tracks and over 40 cars are available to raced in arcade mode. However, the crux of GT lies within simulation mode. Simulation mode provides the greatest depth in the racing genre ever. You begin with 10,000 credits and must past three separate series of license tests in order to begin racing in the different circuits or otherwise you will be forced to race in pickup races. As the different licenses are earned, which are extremely difficult to past, the player becomes eligible to play in different circuits ranging from special tournaments such as four by four racers only to racing in long races. In order to have a better racing machine, credits must be earned by going through the different circuits. The credits (money) can be used to purchase new cars or upgrade your current model. You control everything from car settings (including gear ratios, turbo levels, etc.) and equipment that is used. Tweaking settings occur during practice, before qualifying and before the actual race. During the three longer races, which only can be driver after earning an International A license, pit stops are necessary to change tires. Simulation mode is very deep, almost as deep as Challenger's Deep in the Pacific Ocean. With 166 cars, 11 tracks (22 all together), near 20 racing tournaments, and a breathtaking replay mode, GT offers excellent gameplay.
CONTROL: Ever wondered how a car roaring at 900+ horsepower would be like? Well, it's like real life in GT. Each car represented in GT handles very similarly to their real life counterparts. Arcade mode has absolutely phenomenal control as well. (10 out of 10)
GRAPHICS: Absolutely gorgeous. Cars look identical to their real life counterparts. However, From track introductions to racing beauty, GT is three steps beyond the next best racing title. (10/10)
SOUND: Even the Dodge Viper sounds like it's real life counterpart. The detail is brain numbing. The music is nice overall, but becomes redundant over time. (8/10)
REPLAYABILITY: GT is one of those games where it is easy to pick up a controller and failing to put it down even when it is five o'clock in the morning. There are many challenges offered along with extremely deep gameplay. It will take a while to get used to simulation mode, but it is all worth it; whether it is to grab a bag of microwave popcorn and a can of coke to watch your latest triumph or driving 900+ horsepower Skyline 89. (10/10)
OVERALL: Is there any reason why this isn't the best Playstation racing game ever? This is a must have for any PSX owner!
