 A - INTRODUCTION
===================================================================

-------------------------------------------------------------------
    A.1 - Ridge Racer
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Ridge Racer Type 4 is the 4th in the Racer series on PlayStation.
This game follows quite closely to Ridge Racer and Rage Racer. In
addition, Namco has added reflections, shadows and light sources,
the best graphic effects we have ever seen in the series. The
greatest addition to this game are the cars in the game. The cars
make up a total of 320! This has to be the best Ridge Racer yet.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
    A.2 - The Tracks
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Normally, only the first four tracks are playable. Complete the
Grand Prix once and all 8 tracks will be playable. In addition,
reverse tracks are available in Time Attack mode. You can identify
between Normal and Reverse tracks by the N and R symbols beside
the logo of the track.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
A.3 - The Teams and Makers
-------------------------------------------------------------------

In Grand Rix mode, there are four teams, each with a different
tuning difficulty.

 Tuning Team Name
Expert - Dig Racing Team / D.R.T. (USA)
  Easy - R.C. Micro Mouse Mappy / M.M.M. (France)
Normal - Pac Racing Club / P.R.C. (Japan)
Hard - Racing Team Solvalou / R.T.S. (Italy)

You're advised to start with Mappy, since it is the easiest. Hey,
I'm no expert, so I started with that too.

After choosing your team, select a car maker.

  Drift Types - Assoluto (Italy)
              - Lizard (USA)
  Grip Types - Terrazi (Japan)
              - Age solo (France)

Drift cars are generally harder to control, since it has a
relatively smaller turning angle than grip cars. More on this
below.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
    A.4 - The Grand Prix
-------------------------------------------------------------------

The Grand Prix consists of 8 races.

Heat 1
   -Stage 01
Track 1 - Helter Skelter (Japan, Yokohama)
Track 2 - Wonderhill (Japan, Fukuoka)

Heat 2
   -Stage 02
Track 3 - Edge of the earth (USA, N.Y.)
Track 4 - Out of the blue (Japan, Yokohama)

Final GP
   -Stage 03
Track 5 - Phantomile (Japan, Yokohama)
       Track 6 - Brightest nite (USA, N.Y.)
Track 7 - Heaven and hell (Japan, Fukuoka)
   -Stage 04
       Track 8 - Shooting Hoops (USA, L.A.)

The stages indicates the types of cars used. They'll ship a new
and faster car at the beginning of next stage.

Requirements to qualify-
  Heat 1 : First 3 places
  Heat 2 : First 2 places
  Final GP: First place
(Your rank number will flash in yellow during the race.)

4 trials are conducted, meaning that you have 3 chances after you
fail to meet the requirement the qualify. At the end of each stage,
you're given an option to save.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
    A.5 - VS / Link Battle
-------------------------------------------------------------------

This game assumes that both players have the PlayStation. So both
players are supposed to have their own cars and battle it out.
By default the second player has to put his / her memory card into
the second slot and load the cars that he / she can use for the
battle (i.e. the cars that he / she has set ready in the garage).
A solution to battle with non-R4 gamers is to copy the memory
in slot 1 into the card in slot 2, then get the 2nd player to
load from the card. If you don't have two memory cards, try
switching the card btween slots. However, please take care because
there is a risk of data corruption of removing the memory card
while the PS is still in operation. This has ccurred twice to me
playing R4.

With a serial link cable, you can link 2 PlayStations together
for four player battle. All you have to do is plug the cable into
both PlayStations and then press start on both PlayStations.

===================================================================
 B - IN DEPTH
===================================================================

-------------------------------------------------------------------
    B.1 - The Garage
-------------------------------------------------------------------

In this game, there are two sets of cars available: Garage and
Preset. First time you complete the Grand Prix of one team-maker
combination, 4 cars will be unlocked. In your garage, you're
allowed to have 8 usable cars at a time. So each time you want to
change your cars, go to the garage, select an unwanted car and hit
the 'change' option. There are a total of 320 cars.

Subsequent completions of the Grand Prix will add 1-3 additional
cars to your list. Read more about it in The Unlocking Method
section.

In the garage, you're also able to customise the stickers on your
cars. There are 16 colors and 24 stickers to choose from. You can
also draw your own sticker in the Sticker edit section if you like.

The option 'save' in the garages saves your name. (In case you do
not know)

-------------------------------------------------------------------
    B.2 - The Unlocking Method
-------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a chart of positions you have to get in each race in order
to unlock the cars in the garage. This is a simple example of one
of the shortest ways to get all 19 cars.

S - Save
L - Load

1st Heat 2nd Heat Final GP Car number (Stage 01-04)
    3 3 S 2 2 1 1 1 1 1 , 2 , 6 , 13
     " L 1 2 1 1 1 1 1 , 2 , 7 , 14
     " L 2 1 1 1 1 1 1 , 2 , 8 , 15
     " L 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 , 2 , 9 , 16
    2 2 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 , 3 , 10, 17
    2 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 , 4 , 11, 18
    1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 , 5 , 12, 19

This means that you have to complete 7 times for each
team - maker combination.

There are plenty of methods to unlock cars, so I listed the entire
flow chart here. Make use of this chart and combine it with the
example above.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
    B.3 - Sharp Cornering Tactics
-------------------------------------------------------------------

If you haven't played the previous versions of Ridge Racers, you
should read this.

As mentioned, drift cars have a smaller turning angle than grip
cars. This isn't very obvious, since drift cars now share nearly
the same turning angle as grip cars.

To perform a perfect sharp cornering, you have to have your car to
do some sliding. Both types of cars have different ways of doing
this, and they sound different too. By sliding, you'll definately
have a loss of speed, but it is far better off than knocking into
the wall and having to catch up later.

Drift Cars
-----------
Method 1
  1. Release the accelerator button
  2. Turn
  3. Hit the accelerator just after pressing the direction button
  4. Tap left or right to align

Method 2
  1. Turn
  2. Release the accelerator button
  3. Hit the accelerator just after pressing the direction button
  4. Tap left or right to align

Method 3 (By Imran Chaudhry)
 Keep accelerator pressed...
  1. Turn
  2. Immediately tap the brake once to slide (may need to tap
     twice quickly for certain cars)
  3. Tap the steering to control the slide and straighten up
*. This works best for Stage 4 and Extra Trial drift cars (e.g.
     Lizard Nightmare)

In most cases, drift cars can manage sharp corners this way.
You'll have to predict when to release the accelerator before
the turning point.

Some blunt corners do not require sliding, but seems more than
the car can manage. In this case, just tap the brake for a while,
till you're sure that the car will not knock into the wall.

Grip Cars
----------
  1. Turn
  2. Press or tap the brake button without releasing the
     accelerator
  3. Keep pressing the brake button until you think it is enough
     to pass the corner.

Grip cars cannot slide as much as drift cars, due to their good
traction (hence their name - grip). But they can do most blunt
corners without slowing down.

Cases of oversliding
---------------------
When using fast drift cars (mostly stage 04 cars), you tend to
slide too much than expected. You'll know you overslide when you
hear a really high pitched engine sound.

To solve this, wait till the car to get its grip after the slide.
Shift the gear lower by one, so that the speed catches up and
continue as usual.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
    B.4 - The Extra Trial
-------------------------------------------------------------------

This mode will appear at the bottom of the main menu after you
completed the Grand Prix once.

You can use the cars you've unlocked in the Grand Prix here. Hidden
cars are unlocked in this mode. In order to unlock the cars, you'll
have to win them. Doesn't sound that easy yet, but please try to
use Mappy (M.M.M.) cars first, since it is the easiest team to play
with. Besides that, use stage 04 cars, because the speed of the
hidden com cars are constant. (Don't forget to change your cars in
the garage)

Oh yeah, the hidden cars in Hard and Expert seem nearly impossible
to defeat. Then you might want to try the 'old method' (by means
of blocking when trying to overtake you).

When unlocked, they will appear in your list as car number 20.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
    B.5 - Complete Car List
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Though there are 320 cars, most are variations of one another,
differing in stage, maker, and speeds. Some of these cars have
really cool names (and some really wierd).

These info were extracted from a Japanese website and I have not
confirmed it personally.

Hidden Cars
------------

Car Name : Vulcano
Type : Drift
Maker : Assoluto
Stage : 04
Top Speed: D.R.T. - 360
           M.M.M. - 356
           P.R.C. - 358
           R.T.S. - 374
Comment : This car is flat and wide. It has relatively a high
acceleration, but slows down after 300 Km/h. Despite
being a drift type vehicle, it has an acute turning
           ability.

Car Name : Nightmare
Type : Drift
Maker : Lizard
Stage : 04
Top Speed: D.R.T. - 369
           M.M.M. - 351
           P.R.C. - 353
           R.T.S. - 358
Comment : 13th Racing returns as Nightmare in this version. It
has high acceleration and good turning ability, but a
smaller angle than Vulcano. It is able to hit 350 Km/h
           within 4 seconds.

Car Name : Utopia
Type : Grip
Maker : Terrazi
Stage : 04
Top Speed: D.R.T. - 395
           M.M.M. - 392
           P.R.C. - 399
           R.T.S. - 397
Comment : This rocket car has the slowest acceleration among
the hidden cars, but has an amazing top speed. It tends
to slow down to 360 Km/h while turning. Its turning
ability is nearly the same as Nightmare.

Car Name : Ecureuil
Type : Grip
Maker : Age solo
Stage : 04
Top Speed: D.R.T. - 301
           M.M.M. - 312
           P.R.C. - 294
           R.T.S. - 306
Comment : Do not underestimate on this 'toy car'. This one-geared
wonder has an ability to reach 300 Km/h in 1 second.
It has a higher turning ability than any car in R4.
Other than that, it can do most corners while staying
           above 300 Km/h.

In above sections, I mentioned that there are 320 cars in total.
However, there is still one more..... You must complete the whole
list of 320 cars before you can get this car.

Car Name : Pacman
Type : Drift
Maker : N/A
Stage : 04
Top Speed: No Team - 242
Comment : This car has a shape of Pacman. It has a relatively
good acceleration. A new BGM will be available when
Pacman is playable. It glows in tunnels and even has
           it's own music!

All Stage 01 cars have 4 gears.
All Stage 02 cars have 5 gears.
All Stage 03 and 04 cars have 6 gears, with exception of
Ecureuil, which has only one gear.

Note: Testing of hidden cars' speeds in comments are based on
      Mappy Team cars.

Fun Notes
----------

Using a car that is from the same country as the maker has a
design more more elaborate than other version of the same car.
(Compare PRC Terrazi Utopia to the others.)

The Assoluto Vulcano talks to you! A female voice will announce
"Ignition" when you start and "Caution!" when you hit top speed of
every gear.

Tips and Tricks
----------------
Try to master Manual Transmission. MT has a higher acceleration
point than Auto Transmission (AT) cars. MT allows you to have a
faster start-off than AT.

When starting off with MT, step on the accelerator during the
countdown. When the countdown hits 'GO!', shift to gear 2
instantly. This will give you a pretty good start.

Try to remain calm throughout the whole race. Don't get too
excited whatsoever. ("I'm first! I'm first!" Then someone overtakes
you after you knock into the wall) This may be a dumb tip, but
works all the time to me. ^_^

Little things to note of
-------------------------
While choosing the car, you can press L1 or R1 to steer the front
wheels. It is nothing really. ^_^

While editing stickers, hold L1 and press directions to jump
between buttons.

Pressing triangle during demonstration and replay scenes toggles
a motion blur effect. It looks pretty cool and nice to look at.
This also works in the Music Player in Options.

Music Player functions and tricks
----------------------------------
Standard options
Left/Right - Changes the song currently played.
Triangle - Toggles third person perspective and driver
perspective, with and without motion blur.
Circle - Toggles the repeat function.
 X - Quit to Options
 Select - Toggle soundtrack name

When motion blur enabled, in third person perspective
 R2 - Adds Tint
L2 - Removes Tint (when blur enabled)
 L1/R1 - Cycle Hue

In driver perspective
L1/R1 - Turn camera to the sides

Namco Japan Ranking

After you complete a time trial, you're asked to choose an option

reveal a password. This password is used to get rankings on Namco
Japan's website. This is only for Japan residents.

    B.8 - Common Questions
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Q. Why are there only 8 cars are selectable, even when I
completed the Grand Prix a number of times?

A. When you start off the game, you're given 8 preset cars in your
garage. After you complete the grand prix a few times, your 8
preset cars will be replaced by the new ones you've just got.
You'll have to go to the garage in the main menu to change the
cars. It's a bit troublesome, but they will be quite easy to
access before any race. When you need the cars for the Extra
Trial mode (or other), just change them in the garage.

Q. I can't understand what it's talking about?

A. Most of this game is in English. I translated some sequences,
such as saving, loading, etc which are in japanese. Look for
it in the Japanese Sequence Translations section.

Q. Why doesn't it support Dual Shock?

A. This game creates vibrations on Dual Shock, but does not
support its analog capability (as stated on the back of the
jewel box). The only analog devices I know that will work on
R4 are NeGcon and JoGcon. These two control pads are
specifically designed to work on racing games. (Note US version
supports analog capability in Dual Shock.)

Q. How do you use the JoGcon

A. I don't have this controller. But I know that this control pad
works like a analog radio controller (for radio controlled
cars). It also works like a standard controller, unlike NeGcon,
which has only 6 buttons excluding D-pad and Start button. It
also has force-feedback, which jerks the wheel gently.

Q. What's a PocketStation?

PocketStation is due to be released in Spring 1999. Its size
is only slightly bigger than a normal PlayStation memory card
and has an LCD display. (More or less, it looks like a
Dreamcast VMS or Ban Dai's Tamagochi.) It works similarly to
a memory card, but users can interact through PocketStation
even without the use of PlayStation. Unlike Dreamcast's VMS,
it transmits data using infra-red rays. (Info based on a local
   magazine in Q1 98)

Q. What's in the 2nd disc?

The 2nd disc of R4 contains an enhanced version of the original
Ridge Racer. (They call it "Version Hi-Spec".) It is pretty
impressive, running at 60 fps and has clearer graphics (reminds
me of the arcade version). There's an additional demo of
PlayStation's Ridge Racer released in the 1994 (Jap). Also
included in the disc are demos, movies and information of most
games and controllers Namco produced for the PlayStation.

    B.9 - Japanese Sequence Translations
-------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a little knowledge of Japanese language. Though I may not
know what some menu options are about, I can assume what they do
after trying them out. Here are some translations.

Saving after completing a stage
--------------------------------
Black screen
"Would you like to save your Grand Prix at this point?" Yes/No

      If yes,.....
Yellow screen
"Select an option from menu." Save/Exit

      If save,.....
    "Select a file" 1/2/3

      Choose,.....
"All the game data will be saved in Slot 1's memory card. Is
     that all right?" Yes/No

      If yes,.....
"Is it all right to write?" Yes/No

    Save completed.

Saving in Save and Load Option
-------------------------------
Yellow screen
"Select an option from menu." Save/Load/PocketStation/Exit

      If save,.....
"All the game data will be saved in Slot 1's memory card. Is
     that all right?" Yes/No

      If yes,.....
"Is it all right to write?" Yes/No

    Save completed.

Saving if no empty blocks available
------------------------------------
Yellow screen
"Select an option from menu." Save/Load/PocketStation/Exit

      If save,.....
"All the game data will be saved in Slot 1's memory card. Is
     that all right?" Yes/No

      If yes,.....
    Insufficient empty blocks.

If data is corrupt
-------------------
Yellow screen
"Select an option from menu." Save/Load/PocketStation/Exit

      If load,.....
"All the game data will be loaded from Slot 1's memory card.
     Is that all right?" Yes/No

      If yes,.....
    Load failed.

Loading sample within Sticker Editor
-------------------------------------
Yellow screen
      Load Sample,....
"Sample will be read and sticker that is currently in editor
will be cleared. Is that all right?" Yes/No

      If yes,.....
Select sample sticker, and hit OK.
