"Let's go mine some AUR!"

The Unholy War was released in 1998 by Crystal Dynamics. It never got much advertisement or that much hype either. You probably overlooked it when trying to find a Final Fantasy or Zelda game. Sure, with the $10 price, I almost did too. What good game would cost $10? Especially one that wasn't made by one of the huge companies. The answer to that question is: this one!

Gameplay: 9/10
This game has an innovative style. There are two modes of gameplay to chose from: Mayhem or Strategy.
In Mayhem, you simply pick your team and your opponent picks their's. If you wish to play an AI team, then you select the team for it. After the teams are selected, you fight on one of the many battlefields that are available.

Strategy is a bit more complicated. You control either the Teknos or the Arcanes and you battle the opposite group. Simple concept, right? Well, there are 12 hex-maps that you must clear, each with multiple "bad-guys."
If you find it too easy, you can always switch to Normal or Hard modes.

Story: 7/10
Normal story: You're a group of guys trying to kill a different group of guys. The story is set on Alien planets and there are cool robots and beasts. =)

Graphics: 8/10
Good graphics for the time period, it can't compare to later titles on Playstation, but it's a big step-up from some previous games released.

Sound: 7/10
Sound Effects. Hardly any music at all. The sounds however are timed very nicely and are very clear. Yay for SFX!

Play Time: 9/10
If you know what you're doing (and are good at it), you can beat all 6 versions of Strategy in 10 hours or so. It's not an incredibly long game, but it's not packed full of crappy mini-games that are just to make it seem like a larger game then it truely is.

Replatability: 10/10
Two modes of play. 14 battlefields. 14 fighters. Three AI levels. 3 groups of fighters (Arcane, Teknos, or both). That is a lot of stuff for a game over 5 years old. That can (and will) keep you occupied for a long time.

Final Recommendation: 8/10
A good buy. You won't be able to find it new, now that PS2, XB, and GCN are out, but if you happen to see it, buy it if you're looking for a different kind of game. And if you don't like it, you can always sell it back for about $5 less than what you paid for it. Think of it as a rental. XD
