"A worthy fighter, but has its downfalls."

Capcom vs. SNK. Street Fighter vs. Fatal Fury/King of Fighters. No matter how you look at it, it's two (well, three actually…) of the biggest fighting games out there, exchanging blows to see who the real champion is. Who will win? Who will go home crying (coughcoughcapcomcoughcough)?

STORY
IN THE FUTURE… A special martial arts event is planned through a collaboration of the two most powerful world organizations: Robert Financial Clique and Masters Foundation. The gala event – it is hoped! – will ease the political conflicts between the two powers.

Many renowned martial artists have registered for the tournament. People around the world focus intensely on the upcoming exhibitions. The opening ceremony is a huge success.

No one notices the signs of impending chaos.”

You really don't see any traces of this story in the game, but most fighting games don't have to rely on stories to make them good. Leave that to RPG's.

Gameplay
The core of any fighting game. The controls are solid. You use the D-Pad to move your character around, X, O, Square, and Triangle along with R1, R2, L1, and L2 to attack. The special moves are somewhat easy to pull. Sometimes there is some trouble executing an attack and I just end up punching instead of pulling a Hadouken. Still, the controls are very responsive.

When you choose your character to fight, you must first choose your groove. Depending on what groove you choose changes how you execute your super combos. Your choices are SNK or Capcom (imagine that). The Capcom groove has three sections. Depending on how much is filled depends which super combo you can pull. The more the groove is filled, the better the attack you can pull. The SNK groove is a little different. You have to charge it up by holding the Heavy Punch and Heavy Kick button (or Triangle and O). When this grooved is filled to the max, it starts to slowly drain, and this is when you pull a super combo. Super combos range from easy to extremely difficult to pull.

Now you are to choose your character. You have four available slots (or ratio) to put each character in. Depending who you choose affects how many slots will be taken up because of there ratio. The ratio number represents the characters strength. They are put in three categories, 3, 2, and 1. It's pretty self exclamatory. You choose characters whose ratio adds up to 4.

Then, you have to choose your speed. Either regular or Turbo, your choice.
You are brought to yet ANOTHER menu to choose who will fight first, second, third, etc… After that, its time to fight.

While you fight, you are graded. The grading scale is (from lowest to highest) D, C, B, A, S. This grading scale can be seen on the bottom center of the screen while fighting. You are graded on your style of fighting. When you attack, you get points and your grade grows. When you get hit, it falls, and you loose points. At the end of the battle, you can see how many points you accumulated.

SOUND
music
The music is alright. It isn't anything special, but it fits in with the game greatly. It has sort of a techno feel.

sound affects
For a PSOne game, the voices are rather mediocre compared to other games on the system. The characters speak English, Japanese, and a slaughtered version of the English language with a thick Japanese accent (i.e. Guiles Sonic Boom or Terry's Burning Knuckles). Like most fighting games, the characters will taunt each other and sometimes interact with each other. The noises when you make contact by attacking, however, and well done.

GRAPHICS
The graphics are in 2D which right away will turn away a large amount of gamers. These 2D graphics are done quite well for the PSOne. The backgrounds are well done too. They range from on a train in the desert to a flaming car wreck in the city.

Replayability
There is a fair amount of replayability here. While it's not full of extras like that of Soul Calibur 2, but it is just enough to satisfy. You have 4 modes of gameplay: Arcade mode, Vs. mode, Pair Match Mode, and Training Mode along with Price mode (where you buy extra characters, costumes, and an art gallery) and Color Edit, where you can mess with the colors of each character. And with 30 characters and 5 bonus characters, you'll be playing this game for a while.

Buy or Rent
Well, considering how short this game is, I would have to say rent. Its short and simple; a good game to play during a sleepy weekend. A good rental, but only buy if you're a hardcore fighter.
