"It's more like a catfight than a wrestling game."
On the front cover of this game, you'll see Willie spinning Homer in the air. On the back cover, you'll see Homer doing a belly flop onto a half-dead Willie. There are familiar faces crowded around, watching in suspense. Looking at that, and the fact it's a Simpsons game, it seems like it'd be a barrel of fun to play. I mean, what could be better than beating the snot out of various Simpsons characters? Well, after playing this game, there are many things that are more entertaining, like licking a brick.
At first, it doesn't seem too bad... until you realize you can't really do too much. You have a button for a normal attack, which consists of punching and kicking. You'll really get to love this button, since most matches consist of hammering away on it. Yup, mash that attack button to victory! Of course, you don't have to just use that one, but you don't have to really use any others either. As for other controls, there's a button to do a special attack. Each character has their own unique one (ie, Barney belches, Homer rolls a bowling ball around the ring, etc...). You can jump but not off the top ropes or anything, just on top of the person. What else... oh, you can taunt, do a grab attack and pin. It's not in depth at all. This game should've had a lot more moves and attacks.
The AI in the game is on crack. They seem to pretty much swing blindly at you half the time or they may decide to go psycho on you, and pummel you like a punching bag. The difficulty is somewhat off too. I blew by the first handful of matches or so with extreme ease, then I came to some assclowns who ''double team'' you so to speak, and use a cheap gimmick to hurt you. Not very fun as well as the fact the game is like a cat fight as opposed to wrestling.
This game does feature many of the popular Simpsons characters. These include Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, Barney, Apu, Willie, Smithers, Krusty, etc. You have to play through and unlock many of the characters. It took me roughly 3 hours to do it all.
Music and Sound... 8/10
This is the best and only great part about this game. It features the voice acting from the show, so it all sounds just like it would on TV. The characters speak quite a bit and say their unique phrases. This is most likely the only reason I played the game as much as I did. After awhile though, it gets old, and it can't make up for the lacking gameplay. Plus, if I want to hear the voices, I can just watch the show, which is much, much better than this game.
As for music, you have the Simpsons theme play at the start. The rest of the music is mediocre. It has a Simpsons feel to it, but isn't anything memorable.
This is another area of the game that lacked. The matches all take place at popular areas around Springfield... like the Kwik-E-Mart, Bowl-O-Rama, Moe's, etc... and they have familiar faces standing around watching. Now, the people watching look like statues due to the lack of movement, if any. On top of that, half of them seem to be staring off into space and don't give a rat's ass about the match (sorta like I did after playing for awhile). They could've at least showed them cheering or something. Even the playable characters could've used a bit more animation to them. Homer looked like a zombie or something half the time due to lack of facial expressions and stuff. The graphics do look Simpsony, but in a rather dull and half-ass way.
Neh... I have no plans to replay this game. Playing and unlocking all the characters was more than enough. I would only play it again if I was highly intoxicated.
This game lacks a bit too much in every area with the exception of sound. I wouldn't recommend this game to anybody, except maybe die hard Simpson fans. Play at your own risk.
