Stones In Thunder Plains?

There are multiple Cactuar stones scattered throughout the Thunder Plains. Ive gone through this game many times, and ive read several faqs on here, but none really tell me what their purpose is. Could someone clarify this for me?

There is a "book" resting on the top of the left hand side of the counter in the Thunder Plains Travel Agency that explains how the stones came to be and their purpose.

In the game, one "prays" at three of the stones as they are glowing (Press [Square] to pray) to activate the "random" appearance of groups of from one to three Quactuar fiends.

This also activates the appearance of a Quactuar "ghost" in the South Thunder Plains area which, if followed, will lead the way to a "broken" Lightning Tower.

If one prays at the "broken" tower, a treasure chest or weapon will appear (it depends upon where you are in the game when you pray) which will provide one of the three item pieces which, when "combined" will produce Kimahri's Celestial (ultimate) Weapon.

You activate the stones by pressing square(i think) and then a cactuar ghost should appear, follow him to an broken pillar and the use the celestial mirror on it and then you should get Kimahris celestial weapon.

AZorro007 is correct, but you will need the celestial mirror for the cactuar to appear(I think), you will at least need it to open the chest. In order to get the celestial mirror you need the cloudy mirror, and some other stuff, if you need help getting that, then look in one of the many faqs/walkthroughs on this site.

it is used to get Kimahri's celestial weapon you have to pray at all the stones(i think) then follow the ghost which will lead you to the weapon but you would be needing the mirror

AZorro is correct, to clarify a bit what the others messed up in later responses (no offense) you certainly don't need the cloudy/celestial mirror to make qactuars appear, in fact you can make them appear in your first visit to the Thunder Plains.
Furthermore to get Kimahri's weapon you can just go straight to the tower and pray, the qactuar sorta "guides" you to it if you don't know where it is (as would a new player) but its not a prerrequisite for it to work.
An extra piece of info, the number of qactuars you *can* encounter in battle are tied to the numbers of qactuar stones you've succesfully prayed at, so if you only prayed at 1, no more than 1 qactuar will show up in battle *at the same time*. If you pray at 3, for example, you can encounter groups of *up to* 3.
