    INTRODUCTION--------------------------------------------------------------------------
    
    This is a list of data for the Blitzball minigame from FFX(JP), ie list of players,
    abilities, and the like.  I am not going to go over instructions on playing the game,
    or go into detail about strategy: there's already another FAQ out for that, go look
    at it if you're stumped.
    
    Since I wrote this for the Japanese version of FFX, the name translations I use are
    mostly my own: there's no canon for alot of it as far as I've been able to find, and
    Romaji names are a little hard to read.  I'm not currently planning to change the FAQ
    once the English version of the game comes out as I won't be playing the English
    version.
    
    There may be spoilers in this FAQ in terms of naming locations you've not been to yet
    or minor characters you've not yet met.
    
    Some of the information here comes from various Japanese game guides, but alot of it
    also comes from running around randomly recruiting people to look at their stats and
    data resets. Getting all the information accurate was a pain, so please don't steal
    it.  If there's anything I missed or made a mistake in, feel free to tell me.
    
    Incidentally, after first posting my FAQ, I feel compelled to repeat that this deals
    only with data and stats.  Not playing style, not "who's the best player" etc.  So
    please don't ask me these questions: I write data so you can look at it and decide
    for yourself what you want to do.  If you want strategy there are alot of other FAQs
    out there that deal with just that; the tips at the end are all I have to say on
    the matter.  Also, if you want to send me mail I'd appreciate it if it were in
    English instead of doodspeak.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS------------------------------------------------------------
    
    1.How do I get [blah] ability?
    
      There's really no sure way of getting a specific ability other than play games
    against people and hope somebody on their side has it.  It helps if you have your
    team's level more or less even, since the opposition's levels depend on your average
    level, and trying to get a new recruit to learn abilities is nearly impossible if
    they're level 1 and everyone else is level 50.
      Also, for some of the rarer ones like Anti-Venom, you can check the prizes list to
    see if it'll come up and reset until it does.  Keep in mind that to get something as
    a second or third prize you'll need to lose a game or two.
    
    2.I can't get Jecht Shot!
    
      Just follow the directions on the screen and press the buttons at the right times.
    I really can't offer any better suggestions than that.
    
    3.I can't beat the Goers on the plot tournament
    
      Again, this isn't something I had much trouble with, so I can't really offer
    constructive advice.  If you're having trouble, you can try passing around alot to
    level in the first half and then score quickly in the second.  However, since Wakka
    replaces Tidus halfway through the second half, if you want to take advantage of
    Jecht Shot you'll have to do it quickly.
    
    4.Which players do you recommend?
    
      This is purely a matter of playing style, and since I've already said I'm not doing
    gameplay tactics in here I won't go into detail about it.  I write up players' stats
    so you can look at them and decide for yourself.
    
    
    CHARACTERS----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    
    The character stats decribed here correspond to their abbreviations on the Blitzball
    menu:
    
    LV = character's level
    HP = hit points
    SPD = movement speed
    PH = physical
    AT = attack
    PS = pass
    CU = pass cut
    ST = shoot
    CA = catch
    
    CONTRACT = # of games they're contracted for; note that every League or Tournament
               game you play after the initial match counts on this record, but Exhibition
               games only count if they're in the team you played against.
    SALARY = the amount of gil you pay the character per game
    LOCATION = where the character can be found. If you can't get there yet, you can't
               recruit the character yet.
    
    The position in parenthesis after the name is the position the computer will always
    use this character for.  The player can use them for anything:
    
    FW = forward
    MF = mid-fielder
    DF = defender
    KP = keeper
    
    For abilities, most are translated verbatim, but:
    
    Wake up! = Mesamesukkiri!
    Bargain = Kyouken
    Tackle Slip = Tackle Kaihi
    Tackle Slip S = Tackle Kaihi S
    
    I've only listed the players' initial stats, since once you win more games you'll be
    able to see players' stats without having to first recruit them; unless you play alot
    of Exhibition matches, it's a little hard to figure out everyone's stats from the
    beginning.  Keep in mind that players level differently; the Luca Goers' players, for
    example, start out good but stop increasing their stats at around level 30 or so.
    Kippa will eventually have 99 ST, but only after he hits level 99.

    NOTE: Tidus starts in the Besaid Auraka with an unlimited contract: it won't run out,
          and you never have to pay him anything.  I think it's possible to dump Tidus by
          replacing him with someone else when you have more than 8 people, but since you
          can't talk to yourself I'm not sure how you'd be able to get him back.
          Jecht Shoot is learnable by completing the minigame on the ship to Luca.  If you
          didn't make it the first time you can go back and try again by taking the ship
          again.

    Prizes for the League and Tournament competitions are generated at random among a list
    of choices.  If you don't like the prize, you can ignore the competition for awhile
    until it changes, but if you play even one game in the competition the prizes are set.
    Also, note that the prize for top scorer will be given to as many top scorers as are
    tied for the position, meaning that if you can rotate goals so two or more members of
    your team are tied for first, you get multiple prizes when the game ends.
    
    Develop Ability = Ability Bakkutsu
     This prize allows you to give a player the potential to learn an ability they
     otherwise would not be able to.  Even with all their Key Abilities, most players
     can't learn all or even most of the available abilities; with this prize you select
     a blank slot (NOT a slot with dashes) in a player's ability list, and they will be
     able to learn that ability (you still need to find the ability yourself).
    
    Also, when certain conditions are met, special prizes such as Wakka's Overdrive items,
    the Mercury Seal, Jecht Shoot 2, and Auraka Spirits will appear.  While they will not
    appear again after you've won them, they will if somebody else does.  Note that
    winning a tournament but being unable to equip the special ability because you don't
    have all the Key Abilities doesn't count: the ability will appear again later.
    
    -WAKKA'S OVERDRIVES------------------------
    
    Attack Reel: 1st place prize, Tournament.  No special conditions.
    Status Reel: 1st place prize, League.  You must have the Attack Reel, and have fought
                 at least 250 battles.

    -CAPTURE PROBLEMS--------------------------
    
    While the timing on capturing new abilities differs depending on ability, a safe bet
    is to press the button when the action is in process of going off: when the player
    actually charges during tackles, for example.  Pressing the button alot of times
    quickly doesn't work, as you lose the "Capture" mark if you press it before the right
    time.  Two of the more difficult abilities to capture are Sphere Shoot and Invisible.
    Both have fairly long animations, but you can only capture them in the last split-
    second when they kick the ball.
    
    Success while attempting to capture an ability depends alot on the level difference
    between characters.  You can capture an ability from an opponent who's higher level
    than the character in question, but the chance is very small.
    
    -BUILDING A TEAM---------------------------
    
    You don't have to always stick with the same characters; in fact, it probably a good
    idea to experiment a little.  I can't advise you on picking a team since it's alot
    more fun to improvise your own strategy.  If you're just in to get Wakka's overdrives
    and the Seal, then just find the people with the highest starting stats, level them
    quickly, and blow through the oppositon.  If you're planning to go until LV99, you
    might consider some of the slower-growing characters such as the Kilika Beast members,
    who don't come into their true potential until after level 60 or so.
    
    -LEVELING----------------------------------
    
    Any successful action during a match earns a character Exp, whether this be a tackle,
    pass, shoot, or catch.  Keepers are the only players who earn Exp just for being out
    on the field.  I had a problem once where my MF was overleveled and aways got the ball
    before my defenders could touch it, and as a result had a really unbalanced team.  If
    you run into this problem, you can earn almost infinite Exp during a League match by
    passing the ball back and forth.  Since League matches add time if there's a tie, by
    not scoring goals (and not letting them score) you can extend this infinitely.  It's
    about as interesting as watching grass grow, though.
    
    -THE OPPOSITION----------------------------
    
    Other teams' players also gain levels and abilities.  Players you're matched against
    gain Exp depending on what they did in the match.  Players for all other teams
    competing gain 2-9 levels, random, if they're 5 levels below the average level of
    your team.  Nobody gains exp during Exhibition.
    
    Skills are passed around by an automatic check by the computer: when two CPU teams
    square off, each player makes a check to see if they can learn any of the abilities
    the opposing team's players have.  I'm not sure whether this applies to things that
    you normally won't be able to learn, like Regen.
    
    When a player's contract is up, their team may or may not extend it.  I believe they
    have a better chance of terminating the contract if you talk to (use the square
    button) the player just before their contract runs out.
