"The Best Action Game Since Contra III"

------------------ ---
Graphic Technology 9
------------------ ---
This rating is based on how the graphics compare to previous games on the system. 1 being very pre first generation and 10 being the best seen yet.
------------------------------------------------------------
The graphics in Devil May Cry are very spectacular. The only game that I think that rivals it is GT3. The lighting effects, particle effects and animation sets a new standard for video games. Still pictures do not give this game justice. When you see it on a high quality TV in motion you will know what I mean. There are a few problems with the graphics though. During the cinema scenes the graphics can get very blurry and pixlelated. Some of the textures in the game are of very low quality. They look as if they came out of a low-rez Nintendo 64 game. Thankfully these textures are not that common. They are probably due to the low V-Ram of the PS2.

Graphic Style and Quality 10
------------------------- ----
This rating is based on the how well the graphic style fits the game and how much effort was put into the graphic part of the game.
------------------------------------------------------------
This is an aspect of this game where it really shines. Not since SOTN have I seen a game where the architecture and environments of the game are so well done. Every part of the game from the castle to the outside looks very convincing. The design of the levels is very innovative and looks like it came out of real life. The graphics fit the game perfectly and you can tell that they spent a long time to get every part of the game to look just right.

Sound Effects 8
------------- ---
This rating is based on the choice of sound effects and their quality.
------------------------------------------------------------
The sound effects in this game are very clear and are of the best quality that I have ever heard. Everything from the gunshots to the sound of Dante walking is of very high quality and is very convincing. I can not give this game a perfect sound score since it does not utilize a surround sound of any type. In a game like this I think it is very important to have surround sound.

------------- ---
Music 7
------------- ---
This rating is based on the quality and choice of the music in the game.
------------------------------------------------------------
There is very little music in this game and the music that is there is not very memorable. There is however mood-music. This does not have a tune but rather sets the mood. It changes in different areas in the game such as when you are fighting. Even though it is not catchy it works very well at what it is supposed to do. The church bell sound, the screaming voices and low moody music in the castle fit perfectly for a large scary castle full of monsters. The fast paced guitar sounds when you fight pump you up and greatly enhances the fighting experience.

------- ---
Control 8
------- ---
This rating is based on how the inputs of the controller respond, how the control is set up and how easy it is to execute actions.
------------------------------------------------------------
The button settings for this game are almost perfect. The choice for the buttons is set up in a very natural way. You will never have to fumble over the controls and look at the controller to due a move. The only drawback that I can find with the setup in that there is no button that will change your guns without having to navigate through the menu. R3 changes your devil arms so why can't L3 change your guns?
The execution of your actions is pretty much right on. When you want to jump you jump. When you want to attack you attack. Controlling Dante is very easy and for the most part he does what you want to do. Sometimes it is hard to due accurate jumping. You can not change directions of your jump in the air so it can be very frustrating when attacking enemies or trying to reach a ledge high up. One of the most annoying things are that the start button does not always work when you want to. Sometimes when your in the heat of a battle and you want to go to your menu to use a vital star to replenish you health the start button does not respond. This only happens when a lot is going on in the screen. Sometimes you die because of this.

Gameplay 10
-------- ----
This rating is based on how the game plays. A high score is given to a game that seems to have everything that should be included in that type of game.
------------------------------------------------------------
Devil May Cry boasts excellent gameplay. There is just the right amount of puzzles, exploration and fighting for an action game. There is lots of moves to master, different fighting styles than can be mastered and lots of different enemies to fight. The game is quite large and there is much to do. I can't really think of anything bad t say about the gameplay.

----------- ---
Originality 9
----------- ---
This rating is based on if the game creates a new genre and how well does it execute it, and if the game takes elements from other games how well does it improve on them.
----------------------------------------------------------- This game takes the good parts out of many games. SOTN and the Resident Evil Series are an example. Even though it has not made a whole new genre of its own it has taken great aspects of following games and put them together flawlessly in its own style. It is a mixture of action and adventure that you can not find in any other game.

------------ ---
Presentation 9
------------ ---
This rating is based on how well the interface and extras of the game are done.
------------------------------------------------------------
The presentation of this game is very well done. The opening cinema is very good. The Start Menu is very easy and fast to use and it looks fantastic. It is very nice how your health and stuff is only shown when you need it and it looks just right. The Menus are not overly fancy and don't clutter up the screen. The voices while maybe overdone are full of character, especially Phantom's. The only thing that is not up to par with the rest of the game are the real-time cinemas. Sometimes they look like they are of a lower quality than of what the in-game graphics look like. Also the characters emotions and lips aren't very convincible.

--------- ---
Difficulty 9
--------- ---
This rating is based on how difficult it is to totally beat the game.
------------------------------------------------------------
This game is very difficult to conquer. It took me about twenty hours to beat normal mode. That was acquiring everything. There are many other modes you can play the game in too. Even though it is very difficult it is not impossible. You can always fight enemies to get orbs to buy items that will make the game easier.

------ ----
Replay 10
------ ----
This score is based on how long and how much there is to do in the game. It is also based on if you want to do the extras in the game. If the game is not fun you will not want to spend time to do the extras.
------------------------------------------------------------
For an action game like this, this game is quite long. It takes about 10-15 hours to beat the game on normal mode first time. That's not getting everything. Plus there is many other modes that can take an equal amount of time. To totally conquer the game your looking at spending as much time as you do in a large RPG. You will want to conquer the game since it takes a long time for the game to get boring since there is so much variety in the gameplay.

------- ----
Balance 10
------- ----
This score is based on how well the game goes together and plays out. A game that is very hard in the begging and then suddenly becomes too easy before your done with it gets a low score.
------------------------------------------------------------
This game is balanced perfectly. The level of challenge increases steadily. You get upgrades and new weapons/abilities throughout the game. You get the best at the end and the worst at the begging. To keep the game from getting to easy items gradually increase in price to keep you from upgrading to soon. If you want to make the game easier you'll have to kill a lot of enemies to do it. They whole experience goes very smooth and there is never a dull moment. You'll always want to go on to see what's next.

---------- ---
Fun Factor 9
---------- ---
This score is based on how fun a game is to play.
------------------------------------------------------------
This game is a blast to play. You constantly want to play it because there is so much variety it doesn't get repetitive at all. It can get very frustrating at times though.

------- ----
Overall 10
------- ----
This score is based on the game as a whole, not as an average of the other scores.
------------------------------------------------------------
This is one of the best action games ever. It has excellent graphics and is very fun, challenging and will keep you occupied for a very long time. It is one of those games that you will still play 5 years from now. Even though there are some flaws to the game the good far outweighs the bad. I would recommend this game to anyone who is an experienced gamer as some will find it too hard. Your video game collection would be incomplete without this stellar title!
