Technical stuff I gotta do:
Version: 9.0
Date: 2013
Author: SIMSteven
A GameFAQs Strategy Guide and ONLY for GameFAQs and those I have given
permission to. I will put their names on the bottom so don't lie! Don't
bother inserting your name in the bottom either as my original copy will
always have the correct sites and GameFAQs will always be the first site I
host my guides on. If you see different sites using this guide other than
those listed on the one found at GameFAQs, they stole it! If you are a site
that is not listed in the GameFAQs version, please remove it immediately!

This is a must for any guide, and if you haven’t noticed by now I’ll spell it
out for you:

HAVE I MADE MYSELF CLEAR?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

I just HATE people who copy/plagiarize other people’s work and call it their
own. What is plagiarism you ask? It’s the technical word for the stealing
of other people’s work. It’s also ILLEGAL in every state and country.
Patchwork plagiarism is also illegal. This means that someone copies someone
else’s work, changes a few words and/or paragraphs, and claims that it is an
original work. In other words: DON’T DO IT without my permission!!!!!!

Over time, I've gotten tired of all these sites asking to use my guides.
People ask, "I read all of your guides. Can I use them on your site?" First
off, I doubt anyone would really read through ALL of my guides. They
probably just looked at my contributor page and thought they'd get an already
written guide, without doing any work. Then, I'd have to go and update all
of my guides.

So therefore, my guides will ONLY be displayed on sites of my choosing. The
sites that already have permission to use my guides may keep on using them,
but from now on, my newest guides will have hosting privileges GameFAQs ONLY,
and my own site. Other sites will be sites with special privileges, and will
only get a guide of mine if I contact them personally.

I apologize if you are a reader and find this to be a bit excessive but I
wrote this guide for GameFAQs because it's a free site and I give it to them
for free. Therefore, I don't want to see this anywhere except the places
where I choose since it's also free to view there, as well.

Page width of this document:

This guide is best viewed in MS Word, Courier New, size 10 font, with 1 inch
margins around the document. Apparently, when I change the margins in Word
to 1 inch all around, it resets the left and right margins to .92 inches.
Just to let you know.

********************************E-Mail Policy********************************
*****************************************************************************

As mentioned above, I will not give anyone my guides so don't ask for them.
Also, since I try to be as thorough as possible when I write my guides,
please do NOT send me an e-mail directly. Instead, ask on the GameFAQs
Message Boards or the Answers section.

Also, do NOT ask me anything about sequels, other games in a series, or
anything along those lines. If you absolutely HAVE to ask me a question,
keep it within the game I made a guide for. Praise is also accepted, but
don't ask for a response, because I won't give you one.

Honestly, I get enough junk mail day after day, and I am sick of it. I check
my e-mail every day, but I would rather keep my inbox as clean as possible.
Also, don't try to sell me anything, as your e-mail will be deleted the
moment I see it. Thank you, and good day.

*******************************Version History*******************************
*****************************************************************************

Version 9.0: I guess I can't stay away. I recently picked up the game and
started playing again and began reading through my guide. As I was reading
my guide, I decided to start removing some negativity that was lingering from
my days as an active member of the TXR0 message board here at GameFAQs. I
metaphorically took a hacksaw and scrubbing brush to this guide and rewrote
the entire thing from top to bottom.

Even if no one's posting on the message boards and talking about the game
these days, I'm still going to update the guide at least one more time. I'm
doing this mostly for the sake of refining one of my oldest guides and having
a single go-to place for people playing this game years after it's been
released.

Most of the community has moved on to other games so hopefully this is the
last update and it will answer all questions because most of the information
you need to know is here and available to view.

I also added a lot of info to the everywhere in the guide and decided to
touch up some of my old writing to make the guide feel more polished. I'm
much more confident in my ability to write walkthroughs these days and my
perfectionist nature tells me I should refine my guide once more.

Finally, I'm standardizing this old guide to include things I'm doing with
all my guides these days. For example, my Introduction is now placed below
the Version History section rather than snuck into the header above (which no
one ever reads) and I'm using some new ASCII formatting tricks I've picked up
in the past few years.

Final Version (Old): Updated the e-mail policy and distribution policy. At
one point in my life I decided I didn't want to go back and change all my
guides so I set them all as "Final" on GameFAQs. It looks like I've changed
my mind since then.

Version 8.1: www.gamenotover.com was given permission to use this version of
my guide.

Version 8.0: I updated my Simple Tuning Techniques section. I added a
section on Speeding Tickets. www.ign.com was given permission to use this
version of my guide.

Version 7.0: I added the rival that gets you the Level 2 Mirror. You can
find it in the Miscellaneous Info section. I also added a section that
compares the relationship between TXR0 and The Fast and the Furious.

Version 6.0: I made a new e-mail policy. I also went through and cleaned up
everything so the guide was easier to follow. I updated the requirements for
Late Night Cinderella. I also updated the FAQ section and added a section on
Simple Tuning Techniques.

Version 5.0: I added a FAQ section and Miscellaneous Information section. I
updated Road Master's requirements and expanded the "Make these Wanderers you
first priority" section. Updated Money Making Tips and further clarified the
section on the Autopilot Trick. Changed the look slightly so sections are
easier to find.

Version 4.0: I more information about Tomorrow Again and Last Flight.
www.psxcodez.com was given permission to use this version of my guide.

Version 3.0: I updated the section on the Autopilot Trick. I added a section
called "Make this Wanderer Your First Priority" for Street Gambler. I also
corrected numerous mistakes in the guide.

Version 2.0: I updated Lightning's and Late Night Cinderella's requirements.
Also, www.neoseeker.com was given permission to use this version of my guide.

Version 1.1: www.cheathappens.com was given permission to use this version of
my guide.

Version 1.0: First version. It was pretty much just about the Wanderers and
I don't remember what sections were there originally.

********************************Introduction*********************************
*****************************************************************************

Back in high school, I had a friend that loved racing games while I was more
of an RPG fan. He showed me this game and I loved it more for the fact that
it felt more like a game and less like racing simulator. To this day, it's
still one of my favorite "racing" games.

As for my guide, it started off by using HIKARU2001's guide as a base and
expanding upon it. While his guide covers the Wanderers as briefly as
possible, mine aims to cover each Wanderer with as much detail as I can
possibly give, within reason, so that there's no doubt in what it takes to
defeat all of them.

I also decided to go above and beyond a normal specialized guide and decided
to add all sorts of tips and tricks for other aspects of the game. If fact,
the only things this guide lacks are a full-blown walkthrough, rival list,
and car list. Other guides cover this info better than mine.

At the time I originally wrote the guide, the staff at GameFAQs said it would
be ok to post this guide because it was an original work which used his guide
as a base. They said that as long as I give him credit, they'll keep it up
on the web site.

*****************************1) About Wanderers******************************
*****************************************************************************

"What is a Wanderer?" Wanderers in Tokyo Xtreme Racer Zero are rivals which
are not affiliated with any of the teams and have specific requirements that
you need to fulfill before you can race them. Some of the requirements are
easy to achieve and some are not. In order to race the final boss of the
game, you need to defeat all 60 Wanderers.

*****************************************************************************
**************************2) The Best Wanderer Car***************************
*****************************************************************************

The Viper, Type-VGTS, is probably the best weapon against Wanderers because
it meets several requirements that certain Wanderers have. Not only is it
incredibly fast when you max it out, but you MUST use it to defeat one
specific Wanderer: Toll Free.

It's classified as a foreign car so you can use it against Master Position
and Steam Storm. It's also a 2-seater so you can use it against Dumb Yet
Smart.

This makes the Viper a package deal for defeating Wanderers. With it, you
meet the requirements for several Wanderers with just one car. It's also one
of the fastest cars in the game once you fully upgrade it.

What are the best rivals to defeat in order to add the Viper to the Car Shop?
1) Bloody Mary, a Wanderer.
2) Any team member of the Thunder Dragoon team.

Bloody Mary is available at the beginning of the game, but you need to beat
some prerequisite Wanderers, first. Team Thunder Dragoon is available once
you unlock the Wangan region.

*****************************************************************************
****************************3) Money Making Tips*****************************
*****************************************************************************

The biggest perk about defeating Team Leaders, Devils, Zodiacs, and Wanderers
is the bonus money they give when you defeat them. It doesn't just stop
after the first race, either. Of these rivals, Team Leaders give the least
amount of money, Devils and Zodiacs usually give the most, and Wanderers give
varying amounts of money. All of these special rivals, however, give more
money than your average rival, but you can't find them once you defeat them
and return to your garage.

So what you can do is defeat them, slow down, wait for them to catch up, and
race them again. Do this over and over again without returning to your
garage and you can rack up tons of money in a single night. Generally, if
you re-race any rival in the game, you'll get about 40-45% of their initial
prize money.

This works with Wanderers, too. So let's say that a Wanderer gives you
approximately $11,000 the first time you defeat him. If you defeat him
again, you'll win about $4,500 to $5,500 for each re-race (it varies
more based on how long the race was).

If you re-race every Wanderer repeatedly, you can get far more money
throughout the course of a normal playthrough and you can have a full 50-car
car garage. By the time you reach the end of the game, you might also be
able to buy the best parts to upgrade most or all of them, regardless of how
expensive they are. Yes, this includes all of the custom cars, as well.

I'll also make a note that if you have 50 cars, you can't view the cars in
the Car Shop. Personally, I plan my garage ahead of time so that I have
exactly 49 cars by the time I complete the game and therefore, I can still
view the other cars in the Car Shop.

***Endurance Racing Challenge***

The following is a strategy to get lots of money if you want to buy and
upgrade all of the Custom cars in one file. I don't suggest that you play
this way the first time you play this game because you'll probably get
frustrated and give up early on. It'll take a LOT of time to finish this
file, and that's where the challenge lies.

In the beginning of the game, pick the CE9A (one of the two A-Class cars you
can afford) as your starter car. Go out and re-race one rival each night
multiple times to get a good amount of income flowing in. Try to race for
roughly 25-50 miles each night. In the beginning of the game, you'll only
want to race the Rolling Guys until you get some parts on your car.

For now, focus only on buying the parts which are already at the maximum
level. You'll want to reduce the weight of your car by buying the best aero
parts, dress-up parts, and the level 4 Clutch and Differential. You should
also buy any max-level Aero Tune part such as the Over Fender to increase the
down force on your car so you can take corners better. Refer to the
Miscellaneous Info section near the bottom of the guide so you know which
parts initially start at the maximum.

Avoid all Team Leaders for the time being as you want to stockpile about
$250,000 so you can buy the best engine and muffler. Therefore, you should
defeat all but one member of each team PLUS one or two Wanderers. You should
race any Wanderer for 100 miles due to the bonus prize money they give when
you re-race them. I recommend you defeat Lightning or Garage Door since
they're the easiest to defeat with your nearly-stock CE9A car.

During this time, you should do some Autopilot in Quick Race mode so you can
get 1860 miles on your car. You should do this so that you can gain access
to the mileage parts before you challenge the Team Leaders and Traitor Jack
Knife.

Once you have 1860 miles, you'll want to buy the level 7 engine, level 8
muffler, and level 5 body tune (in that order). You should be able to afford
the engine if you've raced at least one Wanderer for 100 miles and all other
team members for 25-50 miles. With these parts (or just the Engine), you
should be able to dominate the Team Leaders and Devils.

The main goal is to get as many wins in a night of racing as you can. More
wins equals more money. Even though battle distance increases the prize
money per race, more wins are more profitable than long races.

As my own guideline, I race rivals until I've raced them this many miles:
Normal rivals: 25-50 miles.
Team Leaders: 50-100 miles.
Wanderers: 100+ miles.
Devils and Zodiacs: 100+ miles.

Whenever you race a Team Leader, Devil, or Zodiac, they will REPLACE the
rival you just beat. Also, you can't re-race most of the Devils and Zodiacs
because they may force you to pit-in or you'll race them in succession.

Therefore, you'll only be able to re-race specific boss rivals because
successive boss rivals races replace the previous rival. Therefore, you can
ignore the cheapest Team Leaders until later in the game and use those
leaders as fodder for Devils and Zodiacs. For example, it's possible to
leave one rival from Curving Edge on the road until it's time to challenge a
later Devil, Dark Producer. (Use teams such as Rolling Guys or Little Gang
for the other two Devils prior to him.)

This is truly where Wanderers come into play. You can spend as much time as
you want re-racing them and you can choose your difficulty level. Since
there are 60 of these guys and they are not a part of any team, you have 59
nights to rack up tons of money. You can easily buy all the Customs cars by
the end of the game, max them out, and still have money to spare.

It's just that one question remains: is this really a challenge if you buy
the mileage parts to dominate all rivals? Well, that's why it's an endurance
challenge, and the grinding is definitely a challenge in itself. It's also
open-ended challenge where you can tack on more restrictions on top of that.

For example, you can say that you must always have 0 Losses and 0 Draws. You
can impose mileage limits for each car so that no car can exceed a certain
number of miles. You could also restrict yourself to only use C-Class cars
for normal teams or you can never sell your cars. (Basically, it's all about
how you plan your garage around the cars you think will be fun to drive,
regardless of how powerful they are.)

***WARNING***
Some Devils, Zodiacs, Wanderers may be too tough if you attempt to race them
for 100 miles and you'll lose more races than you win. Try buying better
cars like the R34RVM or use Wanderers to unlock more powerful cars earlier,
such as Bloody Mary or Night Wolf. You may even want to waste days once you
unlock Wangan in order to race ZERO (another Wanderer) for his Porsche. Just
don't forget about priority Wanderers like Street Gambler.
***WARNING***

*****************************************************************************
*****************************4) Autopilot Trick******************************
*****************************************************************************

Many Wanderers require you to have driven lots of miles. One way to get
the required number of miles is to simply drive around. However, that takes
forever.

If you want to get lots of miles effortlessly, set your car on Autopilot. To
do this, get into a race and finish it. Once the race is over, don't touch
the controller once the race results are displayed. Let the game take over
and let it sit for several hours. Your car will drive at roughly 70 miles
per hour. Starting at 0 miles, it'll take roughly 26.5 hours to get 1860
miles per car. If you get 1860 miles on a car, it will have access to the
level 7 Engine, level 8 Muffler, and level 5 Body Tune.

When you're out driving (in Free Mode, for example), you'll see two numbers
above the map. The Tachometer (TRIP) and Odometer (ODO) measure mileage
differently. The TRIP measures by 0.1 miles so if it reads 1000, you would
have gained 100 miles during that driving session. The ODO simply displays
the grand total of all the miles on that car. You can also check to see how
many miles are on a car by pushing L2 on the garage screen.

Quick Race mode is an easy way to get the miles and personally, I prefer to
use it over Quest Mode and the Rivals menu. By using Quick Race mode, you
don't have to dump money on parts you won't need to buy so it's a good way to
save money. This means you only need to spend money on the level 7 engine,
level 8 muffler, and level 5 body tune and you can skip the rest of the parts
for that car (unless you want to race low-mileage Wanderers with that car).

A few minor downsides of Quick Race mode are that you won't win money for the
race, you won't increase your wins (and losses) in the Quest Mode, you can't
use the car to defeat low-mileage Wanderers (duh!), and the days won't
advance so it'll take longer for ZERO to come out. The pros easily outweigh
the con, however.

One thing worth mentioning is that you cannot unlock these high-mileage parts
by defeating Devils and Zodiacs. Also, you must do this with each car
because the high-mileage parts are available only to cars which have 1860
miles or more (so you can't race low-mileage Wanderers with a level 7
engine).

***WARNING***
If you plan on selling your car, make sure you don't do this trick. The
miles will kill the resale value of your car. For example, you can resell
the final boss's car for 600K when it has 0 miles on it. If you drive it a
lot and buy the best parts, the price drops to 80K. You would have to spend
about $1.2 million to buy and max out the car. If you were to sell it after
spending all that money, you will lose about $1.1 million.
***WARNING***

*****************************************************************************
****************5) Make these Wanderers your first priority******************
*****************************************************************************

Street Gambler, a Wanderer on Shinkanjyo CCW, should be at the top of your
hit list. His requirement is that the numbers of the day must match. This
makes him extremely hard to find past day 100. Therefore, try to beat him
on or before day 111 or else you'll have to wait 111 days before you have
another chance at him. In fact, try to race him before day 99 when the day
is still in the double digits.

He drives a custom C-class truck which is one of the most unique cars in the
game (and it looks cool, too). It's the only C-class custom car and it's
also the only truck in the game (although its base model was a van).

Another Wanderer that causes problems is ZERO. He requires that the day is
greater than or equal to 365. The reason this is an issue is that people
often defeat as many rivals as they can in a single night once they get a
powerful car. Then they have to wait forever with approximately 400 loading
screens until they get to day 365 (go out, pit in, go out, pit in, etc).

Therefore, race one rival each night and you won't die of boredom. However,
always hit "Free Run" after each battle because you might have a Team Leader,
Devil, or Zodiac to race. Planning who you race each night also helps.

Finally, some Wanderers have a requirement where you need to have a lot of
money before they show up on the roads. If you spend all your bonus money
after you defeat White Charisma, you'll have a hard time getting it back by
racing normal rivals. These Wanderers are Windy Fanfare, Eternity, Cutie
Pie, and Fearful Princess. You will need as much as $3,000,000 to as little
as $100,000 to challenge these Wanderers.

After you beat Speed King or White Charisma and watch the credits, you will
get a large sum of prize money. The prize money from either of those two
will be enough to race any of these Wanderers. Make sure you defeat all four
of them before you spend it all!

*****************************************************************************
**************************6) Wanderer Requirements***************************
*****************************************************************************

All right, now that the important preliminary stuff is out of the way, it's
time to get to the heart of this guide. I've decided to include as much
information as possible about each Wanderer. Also, the "Sticker Name" is
clarified further down in the guide in the related section on Stickers.

Note: All prize money amounts are averages/estimations for the "Normal SP
Battle Mode" (my preferred mode of play) and that's why there's a tilde (~)
in front of each dollar amount. These is also a "Real" battle mode where
colliding into walls and traffic reduces the SP meter for both you and the
opponent.

Note: The "Real SP Battle Mode" increases prize money slightly and greatly
increases the risk of losing races. However, the biggest factors which
affect prize money are the distance of each race and the rival's individual
prize money.

Note: The amounts below are based on a short race (approximately 45 seconds
long). Shorter races shouldn't drop much more than the amounts listed. The
upper limit, however could increase by a large amount if the race results in
a lengthy stalemate. It will vary per rival.

*********************7) FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)*********************
*****************************************************************************

a) Why won't a particular Wanderer race me?
- Double check to make sure you meet all of the requirements above. Also,
some Wanderers have overlapping requirements which cause other Wanderers to
appear instead of the one you wish to race.

b) How do I race #400?
You need to defeat all 399 rivals in order to race #400. Therefore, you must
defeat all Teams, Devils, Zodiacs, and Wanderers.

c) I have the miles, but I am still having problems!
One common mistake that people make is they confuse the Odometer (ODO) with
the Tachometer (TRIP). The Odometer measures in miles while the TRIP
measures per one-tenth of a mile. So if the TRIP shows 1860, it's actually
showing that you've driven 186.0 miles in that session. Otherwise, you might
have JP or PAL versions of the game and not the NTFC version.

Since this guide was written for the NTSC version, you'll have to convert the
miles to kilometers. I've added reverse-conversions in the Wanderer lists
above in version 9.0 of this guide. These might not be 100% accurate because
we're going from kilometers to miles to kilometers and truncating the decimal
each time.

d) How do I get the best parts?
- You can unlock most parts by defeating all of the Team Leaders, Devils, and
Zodiacs. However, the Level 7 Engine, Level 8 Exhaust, and Level 5 Body Tune
are parts available ONLY to cars which have at least 1860 miles on them.

e) The regular rival, [insert non-Wanderer name here], won't race me. Why?
- In general, you should always hit "Free Run" after you challenge a rival
because boss rivals will immediately challenge you after you defeat enough
team members or leaders. If you pit in between races, you'll have to find
the boss rivals by racing one of the team members you've already defeated in
that same area.

f) How do I reset my PS2 clock?
- Turn on your PS2 without a disc in it or leave the disc tray open as you
turn it on. Use the menus from there until you find the PS2 clock.

g) I have a car settings question!
- If you're looking for the "best" settings for a car then you're out of luck
because no "best" setting exists for any car. For one, it's subjective based
on whoever's doing the tuning. For two, there are countless ways to tune
every car in the game. The best I can give you are the basic techniques for
tuning, found near the bottom of the guide.

h) What's the best car?
- While this is mostly personal preference, here's my list of the top cars in
the game based on how fast they are and how useful they are for defeating
rivals:
1) #400's "Devil Z."
2) Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Turbo (964T) or Viper GTS (TYPE-VGTS)
3) Speed King's Skyline or Red Devil's Skyline
4) White Charisma's RX-7 or Late Night Cinderella's RX-7
5) A Lancer Evolution 3 or 6. Types CE9A and CP9A6M.

i) Is nitrous (N20) in this game?
Nope. Even with the movie trailer for Fast and the Furious, there are no
parts or anything that allow your car to have Nitrous Oxide. That's because
this game is made for a more Japanese-oriented audience. Also the Japanese
focus more on tuning and turbos and less on "cheap win" parts, like N20.

j) Does TXR0 have [insert car name here]?
I shall redirect you to Lindigj's car list.
http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps2/448657-tokyo-xtreme-racer-zero/faqs/11886

k) How do I get the BMW?
Beat either Raspberry Kiss or Master Position. They're both Wanderers. Be
warned, though, as the BMW is a crappy car.

l) What do I do once I beat the game?
You drive around and race old team rivals. There will be no more new rivals
once you beat the game.

m) How do I unlock the rest of the track?
If you have Wangan and Yokohanne, you have the entire track unlocked. If you
don't, defeat Team Leaders and Devils. The only other track is the oval
track in Time Attack mode.

n) Which cars qualify as foreign cars?
I know these cars meet the requirements for such Wanderers:
Porsche 911 Carrera (TYPE-964C2 and TYPE-964T)
Dodge Viper (Type-VGTS)
BMW M3 (TYPE-E36)
Peugot 306 S16 (TYPE-N5S16 and TYPE-N5S16M)

*****************8) Custom Car (Boss Car) Max Stats Database*****************
*****************************************************************************

Ever wonder what the stats of each custom car are like at full power? Are
you too lazy to get all mileage parts and the money to buy and upgrade them
all? Well then this section is for you.

As of version 9.0 of this document, I've finished my endurance challenge and
have a 50 car garage with all custom cars bought and upgraded to the max. It
was definitely a grind, I can assure you. It took me over a year to finish
this save file and I raced about one or two rivals a day. I raced all team
members for 50 miles apiece and all bosses and wanderers for 100 miles.

For some of the Wanderers, I didn't race them for the full 100 miles, but I
made up for it by racing other Wanderers beyond 100 miles to make up the
difference. In this file, I've also upgraded a number of normal cars (mostly
vintage and special cars) and I still have an extra $2.2 million in the bank.

But this section isn't here for me to brag! This section is all about the
custom cars and what their stats are like when upgraded to the max. This
includes the mileage parts which you need 1860 miles on each car to purchase.

NOTES: The first letter in brackets denotes which class the car is in,
should be looking for it in the car shop and can't find it.

Also, the second item on the list also doesn't have a big factor aside from
helping you predict how the car might handle. 4WD is Four Wheel Drive. FR
is front engine, rear wheel drive. FF is front engine, front wheel drive.
MR is mid-engine, rear wheel drive. RR is rear engine, rear wheel drive.
There are no custom cars with FF or RR.

The weight (measured in lbs - those crazy Japanese are not using their own
metric system!) affects the handling and acceleration of the car (where less
is good and more is bad).

The HP (horsepower) shown is with the turbos cranked up to the max (if turbos
are available for the specific car).

Finally, CC (cubic centimeters) doesn't really impact the speed of the car.
It simply tells how big the engine is. If the car has CC but no turbos, then
the car is Naturally Aspired (or NA for those aficionados out there). If it
says x2 or x3 instead of cc, this car has a double rotary or triple rotary
engine, respectively.

Now, without further ado, let's get on with.... THE LIST!

a) About this info

This information is taken straight from the GameFAQs message board before
GameFAQs added its archiving system. There was a thread that was started by
Mad Dragon called "ATTN: New Players RE: Maximum Upgrades." It had a lot of
useful info, notes, and tidbits and wasn't just about maximum upgrades.

Recently, I've removed the forum format and I've simply trimmed up this
section of the guide so it's more consistent. It should be easier to read
and follow.

Credit for this information doesn't belong to me, alone. Thank Mad Dragon,
the creator of this topic at the time, and a few other people. I also
participated in this thread and another regular on the forums, r4X0r,
contributed to the this thread.

I've also added additional notes in an addendum section below because I've
played through the game again just recently. These are simply additional
tidbits of information that I thought I'd add to this guide.

#400: None

1860 miles on a car: Engine (7 - MAX!), Exhaust (8 - MAX!),
                     Body Tune (5 - MAX!)

*The maximum-level Engine, Exhaust, and Body Tune only available to cars that
have at least 1860+ miles (3000+ km) on them. You can get these parts at any
time regardless of your progress in Quest Mode. You could even get the parts
by Day 2 if you raced enough on the first night to be able to afford the
parts (good luck). Cars with the miles also have access to all other Engine,
Exhaust, and Body Tune parts. Then again, why would you buy weaker parts?

*High-mileage cars lose most of their resale value so if you intend to buy
the mileage parts for that car, make sure it's one that you intend to keep.

*You can't modify the grill and side skirts on certain cars.

*You can't change any Aero Tune, Lights, and Grill on the custom cars (with
the exception of #400's car).

*Mad Dragon asked a Datsun aficionado I know on another board about the S30ZX
(#400's car). This is what he had to say:

"The HLS30 are the 240z cars.
The HLS130 are the 280zx cars.
I can't find model designations for the 280z line, but I have never seen
letters after the number designators on Nissan models. Don't know why the ZX
would have been tacked on the [S30]...

(Mad Dragon then told him all of the S30 cars' displacements, and he came to
this conclusion:)

The S30ZX would be a 260z. Engine code L26.
The S30ZG is a 240 Z with the G nose kit. Engine code L24.
The S30Z is the Japanese-only market Z with a 2 liter straight 6. Engine
code L20.

It's the same basic body style, but in this case with an engine that was only
offered here for one year. Elsewhere in the world they never got the 280z.
They always just had 260z from '74 on. We got the 280 because the stricter
US emissions laws made the 240 and 260 power plants too weak with the extra
smog equipment. Other markets didn't have that problem so they stuck with the
smaller motor. #400 drives a 260Z. Now we know."

*After you win (or lose) a race in the career mode, don't do anything, and
don't push any buttons on the controller. Your car will start driving on
auto-pilot. It'll take roughly 26-27 hours to get 1860 miles. I recommend
you break this up into multiple sessions to reduce the wear-and-tear on your
PS2.

*This also works in the rivals menu. Just make sure you return to garage
afterwards. If you hit "Retry" you will lose all the miles you gained.

c) Addendum

*Quick Race Mode will also allow you to get 1860 miles. This is an easy way
to get the miles without having to dump money on parts you won't need to buy
anyways. The downsides to this is you won't win money for the race (hey,
you're actually saving money instead), you won't rack up a win, and the days
won't advance (if you're waiting for ZERO).

*A good way to remember the difference between Shinkanjyo CCW and Shinkanjyo
CW is to pretend that CCW and CW stands for "counter-clockwise" and
"clockwise" respectively. While those probably aren't the real words behind
the acronyms (since they're based on Japanese words), it's convenient enough
for us English speaking gamers to tell the difference between the two routes.

*SP stands for Speed Points.

*In general, your BAD Name is determined by your win-loss-draw ratio and the
combined total number of wins, losses, and draws. It then picks a name from
a table which fits the criteria range at the end of the night. I'm not sure
if there's other criterion which affects it, such as what day you're on or
how many rivals you've defeated.

*Also, the BAD Name is split into two parts which might be independent of
each other. Based on the way I play, I always end up with Phoenix as the
second part and it never changes once I get that. Therefore, I believe the
second part is directly related to your win ratio while first part changes in
terms of game progression. In my case, it tends to change several times
until I have most of the rivals defeated and my final BAD Name eventually
ends up at "Legend of Phoenix."

*Your BAD Name isn't completely determined at random because you can
manipulate what you get to some extent. If you're aware that the name will
change after the night is over, you can sometimes manipulate it to get a
different name by winning a certain amount of times that night. Losses and
draws might also count but I haven't tested it yet, as I always reload my
game if I get either. There's also no point in manipulating your BAD Name
early in the game because it tends to change constantly early on.

face White Charisma. You CANNOT race him multiple times. Defeating White
Charisma will grants you $5,000,000 and allows you to defeat the last of the
Wanderers.

*Defeat all 60 Wanderers and you will face #400. Defeating #400 grants
nothing but allows you to buy and tune up the best car in the game. You can
race many old team members at this point and tune up any car you like. You
beat the game!

*I've also personally speculated long after this thread was made that #400's
car could simply have a Skyline's engine dropped in. It has the same level 7
engine statistics as the R34RVM. It's an engine that could possibly be
transferred from one Nissan into another and supposedly, a phantom's driving
it. Therefore, it's not a stretch of the imagination by any means.

*Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2 sheds more light on #400's background but it's not much
additional information. He's supposedly the best street racer there ever was
but he died in a freak accident.

*Finally, the Tokyo Xtreme Racer games seem to be based on a manga and anime
called Wangan Midnight. I've watched the anime and the protagonist, Akio,
salvaged a first-generation Datsun Fairlady S30Z from a junk yard before it
was scrapped. One of the previous owners shared the same name as him and
used it to become a legendary street racer in Tokyo. It's also "cursed"
because it was unnaturally fast, incredibly hard to control, and caused many
accidents. That's why it was called the "Devil Z."

*I am aware that the Wangan Midnight anime was created years after TXR0 and
might invalidate a few of my theories. I'm also aware that, by reviews of
the anime, it's a faithful adaptation of the manga which was created several
years before TXR0 (and may also support my theories). This may also explain
why most of the cars in the anime are older models compared to more recent
media (such as TXR0) and might be placed earlier chronologically (see below).

*In the Wangan Midnight anime, the Devil Z was also a bitter rival of
Blackbird. The Blackbird in TXR0 is ZERO, a Wanderer rival on Wangan South.
Another main character was Reina, a woman who chased both Blackbird and Z
while driving a silver R32 Skyline.

*In the Wangan Midnight anime, various other cars and drivers appear plus
professional tuners that tune various cars (including Blackbird and Z's
cars.) A reoccurring theme throughout the anime is that many drivers had
their heart stolen by racing against the Z and if a driver truly wished to
race against it, it will appear for them. Oddly enough, there is no phantom
behind the wheel but instead, it's a young man named Akio.

*In the Wangan Midnight anime, the Devil Z has a different engine than its
original. It was swapped with an "L28 Twin Turbo" but I'm not a car
aficionado and don't understand what that means, nor do I care (so don't send
me e-mails on this). However, it was supposed to only have 600 HP. In TXR0,
it has over 1100. Another reoccurring theme in the anime is that the Z is
said to have a will of its own and only desires to go faster. Akio was also
"chosen" to by the Z because they apparently share the same soul and/or
desire for speed.

*I have reason to believe that TXR0 takes place many years after the Wangan
Midnight anime. For starters, the R34 Skyline was just being introduced at
the end of the anime as well as the Lancer Evo 6. There are several of these
cars plus later models in TXR0. Also, the Devil Z only reached 600hp and
Blackbird's Porche only reached 800hp. Both cars in TXR0 can surpass 1000hp.

************************10) Simple Tuning Techniques*************************
*****************************************************************************

Even though this section is not directly related to beating the Wanderers, I
thought that I add this because some of the Wanderers require you to use a
piece-of-crap car which is probably better suited for demolition derby.

Response:

This is found on the Garage settings screen. Unlike other settings, you
cannot adjust this when you're out driving and not in a battle. Basically,
you set them at +15 for every car you have. Response affects how your car
reacts to input from the controller. Personally, I feel the developers made
a mistake to use pressure-sensitive buttons in the first place. Quite
frankly, you always want the pedal to the metal and you always want an
instant response from the controller.

Handling:

To put it bluntly, the only time you need to mess with your suspension
settings is when you're driving a custom car (and most of them don't need
adjusting, anyways). For any other car, all you have to do is change the
front bumper. This is the best way to fix the incredible over-steer that
plagues cars such like the Datsuns. In general, downgrading the Front Bumper
to Type-2 or Type-3 is the easy fix to make a car handle better.

As for settings, I can give generics for those of you who simply want to beat
the game. In general, each car should have unique settings, but most people
don't take the time to fully tune each car. Here's what I do if I use a
generic set-up:

For the Ride Height, keep the front at -5 in relation to the back. (For
example, you can set the front to -5 and the back to 0.) Do anything you
want to the Spring Rate and Damper. Personally, I always set all four
settings to -15. Really, the best way to adjust handling is to change your
front bumper.

Gears:

I really can't help much in this section. The gears should always be set up
for each car individually. No two cars are the same, and the gearing is the
most diverse attribute between all the cars. One car will not do well with
another car's gear set-ups. I can give helpful hints, though.

First, you should get the best parts for you car. Also, remember that you
need to get 1860 miles in order to get the Level 7 Engine, Level 8 Exhaust,
and Level 5 Body Tune. See section 4 for details.

Second, move all gears 5 clicks from the right. This is what I always do
when I get ready to tune my gears. Most of the time, you'll be moving the
gears more to the right when you start tuning, but we'll get to that later.

Third, look at the maximum torque and maximum HP on the Garage screen by
pushing L2. There should be two numbers that say when your HP and torque
will be at maximum due to RPMs. These numbers should be in the thousands if
you don't know what I'm talking about. Take these numbers and write them
down. You're going to need to tune your car based off of these numbers, and
when you're out racing, you'll need to tune your car without being able to
look at them.

Finally, go into Free Run Mode and select a manual transmission. Now that
you have your numbers at hand, you'll need to tune up your gears according to
those numbers. Find the number that is the higher number of the two (HP).
Drive as fast as you can on a straightaway (Wangan). Set your Final Gear so
that when you hit your top speed, the needle will be on what your maximum HP
should be.

Next, change the gears themselves. You'll want to up-shift whenever your
RPMs reach your maximum HP. When your RPMs drop, it should drop to the lower
number (Torque). Keep changing the gears until your gears will always move
between the two numbers. In general, 2nd Gear determines where the RPMs will
drop to when you up-shift from 1st to 2nd Gear. 3rd Gear relates to 2nd and
3rd Gear. And so on. I haven't figured out what 1st Gear does yet, but just
keep its number in proportion to 2nd Gear and you should be fine. The best
place to do all of this is on the Wangan line.

Also, remember that your car will wear down at about 10+ miles. Therefore,
pit in whenever the Tachometer reads 100, which is 10.0 miles. One final
note, you can change your settings when you're out driving. Just push the L
and R buttons on the pause screen. You cannot change settings when you're
in a race.

Turbo Boost:

Basically, put it all of the way to the right. Naturally Aspired cars cannot
get turbos and some of the old cars have turbos where you can't adjust the
boost pressure.

********************************11) Stickers!********************************
*****************************************************************************

This is just a fun little addition to the last version of my guide. By now,
you've probably realized that every rival you face has a sticker plastered on
their car and you can use it for yourself once you beat the Team Leader,
Wanderer, Devil, or Zodiac that uses the sticker.

What you probably didn't know is that the name on the sticker as it appears
on the car usually doesn't match the name of the rival you as it appears on
the street and Rivals menu. This mostly due to mistranslations or they
probably altered the names of these rivals to accommodate the people who
generally play PS2 games. Personally, I think the TXR0 retranslation from
original Dreamcast games (Tokyo Xtreme Racer Zero 1 and 2) was horrid. Their
original Dreamcast names just make more sense compare to the garbage
localization that TXR0 had.

Yes, there are many returning rivals from the previous games but there are
some new ones, too. In fact, TXR0 is basically a remake (or rehash) of both
games and they're combined into one game. Also, you can't actually use
stickers to find the real names of the normal team members but you can see
the name of all other rivals. The best way to get a good view of a sticker
is to buy a van, equip the sticker, and view it from Spoiler Aero Tune menu.

For your convenience, I'll list what it says on each sticker below. I won't
include teams unless there is a noteworthy difference between the sticker
name and the name in the Rivals menu.

****************************12) Speeding Tickets*****************************
*****************************************************************************

That's correct, you can get speeding tickets in TXR0. However, it's nothing
grand when it happens. All that happens is there is a flash of red light and
you hear a siren. When you return to the garage at the end of the night,
you'll pay a fine. Your fine will be based on how fast you were going. It's
usually $1,000 or more because you typically don't get a ticket unless you're
speeding through the checkpoint at 165 mph or more.

There are no cops in the game and that means there are no police chases. You
can only get a speeding ticket if you're in a race with another rival and you
can only get them from cameras which catch you on certain points in the road.

Sometimes you can avoid the fine and get a SAFE rating. The only guaranteed
method of getting a SAFE rating is to drive a car which has a variable
license plate. Only custom cars have variable license plates but not all of
them have one.

Formula for the total fine:

(Speed when caught - 65mph) x 10 = fine amount.

Locations:
1: Kanjyo Outer: Area with the red pavement and pillars, left lane.
2: Kanjyo Outer: West of the southern Shinkanjyo junction, left lane.
3: Yokohane South Bound: North of the southern junction to Wangan.
4: Yokohane North Bound: North of the southern junction to Wangan.
5: Yokohane South Bound: South of the S-curve tunnel.
6: Yokohane North Bound: South of the S-curve tunnel.
7: Wangan North Bound: Before the on-ramp to Shinkanjyo CW, left lane.
8: Wangan North Bound: Before the on-ramp to Shinkanjyo CW, right lane.

*************************13) Hidden Button Features**************************
*****************************************************************************

While these aren't cheats or unlockables, there are a few extra Easter eggs
which you can use of for your own amusement. These require you to hold a
button down at various times, and you gain access to the said Easter egg.

- At any time when you're out racing, pause the game, hold down the Square
button, and arrow down to the blank "slot" at the bottom of the pause menu.
This allows you to access the Analyze feature, which shows how hard you're
pushing down each button (because PS2 controllers have pressure-sensitive
buttons).

- At any time when you're out racing, pause the game and press Triangle and
Square simultaneously. This will lock the game and remove the Pause menu
from view. To unlock the game, press Triangle and Square simultaneously
again. There's little reason to do this unless you want to take a picture
of your game, so therefore, I'd call this "Screenshot Mode."

- Pressing Triangle whenever you're watching a replay switches the behavior
of how the camera follows your car.

- To erase all your time attack records, enter the Time Attack Records screen
and hold L1, R1, L2, and R2. Then press Start.

- Load Screen Features: On the course selection screen, hold down these
buttons as you select the Shift Assist option. Continue to hold these down
until the loading screen is finished and your car shows up on screen.

* Square: Spawns normal traffic in Free Run Mode.
* L1: Dragon/Gremlin Mirror Ornament (Shown in first-person mode)
* L2: Small Bird Mirror Ornament (Shown in first-person mode)
* R1: Frog Man Mirror Ornament (Shown in first-person mode)
* R2: Morbidly Obese Bunny Mirror Ornament (Shown in first-person mode)

*****************************************************************************
****************14) How TXR0 relates to Fast and the Furious*****************
*****************************************************************************

IT DOESN'T!!! There are too many people which believe that because there's
an in-game ad for The Fast and the Furious, there's a connecting between the
game and the movie. The only thing they share is that they both have street
racing themes.

In ages past, people would ask this on the GameFAQs message board and they'd
get flamed by the regulars there. While the board is probably dead at this
point in time, it was a major irritation for everyone because people would
ask questions irrelevant to TXR0. Questions such as how to get the Charger
or if there's Nitrous Oxide in the game. The Charger can be just normal
traffic if you start at in Wangan or Yokohane but it's unobtainable. N20
isn't in the game, either.

Before I go off on a rant, I'll point out a few differences between Japan's
street racing scene and America's. The Fast and the Furious was made in
America and TXR0 was made in Japan. Comparing the two is like comparing
apples and oranges. Both cultures have different viewpoints on street
racing, and street racing is the only similarity between the two.

Most of the cars in TXR0 are Japanese-made cars but there are a few from
other countries. The Japanese street racers also don't need to use N20
as much as the street racers in America because their highways have more
curves. This is also why most of the cars in the game are naturally aspired
or use Turbos because Turbos are more prevalent in their auto parts market.

So why does TXR0 have a movie trailer for F&F? The simple explanation is
that Genki of America wanted to make a little extra money so they threw in
the advertisement. The TXR series has been around a lot longer than Fast and
the Furious and there have been two games that were previously released for
the Dreamcast. Finally, I heard that the movie trailer wasn't even in the JP
release of TXR0.

The bottom line is this: DO NOT confuse TXR0 with The Fast and the Furious!
