Version 1.0 (29 Nov 2003): First version of the FAQ, with
cutscenes and narrations translated for all three characters.

Things to add in later versions:

    In-game Japanese dialogue (enemy speech)
Other useless trivia as I think of it

******************************************************

Welcome to my very first FAQ! If you've ever wondered what exactly the
characters are saying when they speak in Japanese, or if the Japanese
version has a different storyline, this might be of some use to you.

You won't find gameplay tips or a walkthrough here (for those, check out the
excellent FAQs at gamefaqs.com). And if you haven't yet played the game and
don't want any surprises spoiled, steer away. Now.

This guide is mainly for those who have already played the game and want to
know if Tajima really says "Looks like you've chosen the wrong party to
crash" in Japanese. (He doesn't. More on that and more later.)

To save space (read: can't be bothered), any descriptions of what takes place
in each cutscene will be pretty brief. These will be indicated in square
brackets "[]".

Where different cutscenes are shown depending on decisions made in the game
(Shichishito or no? Fight Onikage or not?) they are enclosed by pound signs
"#".

Notes on the text appear at the end of each mission, and are marked like this:
"(*1)"

Though I've used the actual Japanese text in the Japanese version as a
cross-reference wherever possible to ensure that a translation is correct,
there may be the occasional typo, misheard word or mistranslation. If there
are blatant TRANSLATION mistakes, I will fix them in future versions.

in any form other than for personal, private use without the prior written
consent of the author (that's me). I like to think I'm a pretty nice guy, so
most likely I will give my OK as long as you:

- Don't change a word in the FAQ. Yes, even if you think my Japanese is
bad. Or even if you think my English is bad. Someday, when my ability to
make distinctions between Japanese and English is hopelessly blurred, I'd
like at least to be able to say, "All this FAQ is belong to me!" Which
  brings me to...
- Give me proper credit. That way you won't be known as "the guy(*1) who used
a lame joke like 'All this FAQ is belong to me!' " Let that shame be mine
  alone. And finally...
- Don't charge anything for it. And anyway, with our current "get stuff
without paying for it" culture (gotta love filesharing) you'd be lucky to
  get anything.

NOTES:
(*1) If you are Y-chromosomally-challenged, substitute "girl" here. If the
use of the word "guy" or "girl" offends you, you probably deserve to be
offended and worse for plagiarizing a FAQ.

III.A RIKIMARU'S MISSIONS

==================================
III.A.1 Punish the Evil Merchant
==================================

Narrator: It was the Sengoku(*1) period, and the land of Gohda was at peace
for a brief period of time.
But hidden in the background, the shoots of evil were undoubtedly
             about to bud...
Gohda's elder statesman Nasu conspired with Tokubei, heir of the
Echigoya clan, and sold kidnapped girls to other territories.
The darkness of night could conceal the schemings of Nasu and
Tokubei, but it was also sufficiently dark to conceal the presence
of a shadow gradually closing in on them.
It was a night exactly one year after Rikimaru vanished from the
chaos following his battle with Mei-oh.

(OPENING CUTSCENE: NASU & TOKUBEI)

Nasu: Things have been going well.
Tokubei: Yes, yes, completely.
Well, here're some sweeet confections for you.

[Tokubei slides some "candy" to Nasu, which of course are wrapped gold coins.]

Nasu: Hmmm...I just can't resist this kind of confections.
             By the way...
Are these the only sweet things for tonight?
Tokubei: I've got something all ready for you.
             But first, have this.

[Nasu is blindfolded and is groping towards the door.]

Nasu: Tokubei, you've really come up with something interesting this
             time!
Tokubei: Yees...
It's because you've always been good to me, Nasu-sama.
I've got a special girl for you tonight too, so please enjoy her
             to your heart's content.
Nasu: Tokubei, I shall take full advantage of your thoughtfulness!
Girl: Nooo!

(PRE-BATTLE CUTSCENE: RIKIMARU & TAJIMA)

Tajima: The big rat just got itself lost, huh?
Rikimaru: If you stand in my way, I will kill you!
Tajima: You think you can beat my weapon with that?

(PRE-BATTLE CUTSCENE: NASU & RIKIMARU)

Nasu: Where are you, where are you?
             Oh! Got you!
Hmmm...you've got a pretty big body.
There there, don't be so stiff.
Speaking of which, you're dressed strangely...HUH?!

[Nasu staggers back while Rikimaru advances on them.]

Rikimaru: You evildoers take away girls burdened with debt, and fatten your
             own pockets by selling them!
In the name of heaven, I will punish you!
Nasu: S-Scoundrel!
Tokubei: Come out, come out!
Nasu: Attaaaack!

(POST-BATTLE CUTSCENE: RIKIMARU & TOKUBEI)

Rikimaru: What are you plotting? Answer me!
Tokubei: Please don't kill me!
We sneaked a traitor into Gohda Castle!
Rikimaru: A traitor?
             What is his name?
Tokubei: A man with a headband named Hamada!
I only did it because I was asked to.
             I'll tell you everything!
I'll tell you, so please s-

[Tokubei dies, and Rikimaru sees Onikage.]

Rikimaru: He can't be...
             Onikage!
             Why is he alive?

[Cut to some blue glowing flames...]

Ganda: Rikimaru...
Kagura: Rikimaru?
The one who singlehandedly drove Mei-oh's army to destruction?
             That Rikimaru?
Tenrai: So he survived...
             Things have gotten interesting.
The more pawns there are, the more fun it will be!

NOTES:
(*1) The Sengoku (Warring States) period was from 1476 to 1615.

=================================================
III.A.2 Execute Hamada and Return to Lord Gohda
=================================================

Narrator: From the conversation between Nasu and Tokubei, Rikimaru learns
there is a traitor in Gohda Castle. The traitor's name is Kohsuke
Hamada, and the only clue is that he is a man who wears a headband
             and eyeglasses.
Rikimaru visits Gohda Castle for the first time in a year to
search for the traitor who has infiltrated Gohda Castle.
But to many of Gohda's retainers, Rikimaru, whose existence is
known only to a few even in the castle, is nothing but an
             intruder...

Rikimaru: If I don't find the traitor, my lord's life will be in danger!

(CUTSCENE: Rikimaru finds and kills Hamada, then enemy ninjas kill some guards)

Rikimaru: If I don't hurry, my lord will be in danger!

(CUTSCENE: Rikimaru makes it to Lord Gohda's chambers)

Rikimaru: I apologize for being late.
Gohda: Rikimaru? You've been alive?
Rikimaru: Using my arts, I caused myself to sleep.
Ayame: You sure were able to detect the danger to our lord.
Rikimaru: During my slumber, I placed shadows everywhere.
Ayame: Shadows?
Rikimaru: Correct. Shadows.
Ayame: Really...so are you the real thing?
Rikimaru: Well...
             I don't know about that...

====================================
III.A.3 Find the Shichishito Sword
====================================

Narrator: Rikimaru succeeded in returning to Gohda. Matsunoshin(*1)
recommended that Rikimaru rest, but Rikimaru refuses, saying that
he will investigate the Castle of Darkness, where his battle with
             Mei-oh had taken place.
The Castle of Darkness was destroyed when Mei-oh was banished, and
all that remains now is a cave with underground waterways passing
             through.
With no time to celebrate their reunion, Rikimaru leaves Gohda.
Rikimaru was finally able to make it to the entrance of the cave,
but by then it had already been transformed into a hideout for a
mysterious ninja group. Rikimaru's objective is a limestone
             cavern deeper within.
There, the Shichishito sword, abandoned when Mei-oh was banished,
             is supposed to be slumbering...

(CUTSCENE: Rikimaru finds the Shichishito)

Rikimaru: I cannot let this fall into anyone's hands.
             What's this?
Onikage: The gate to the netherworld.
Rikimaru: You're...ONIKAGE!
             You've been alive?
Onikage: I've been resurrected.
Because I've got a score to settle with you.
Rikimaru: Resurrected?
Onikage: A sorcerer named Tenrai brought me back to life.
And my first task is to take that Shichishito.
Rikimaru: For what purpose?
Onikage: The Shichishito is the key to the netherworld.
If I get the Shichishito, and open the path to the netherworld,
Lord Mei-oh will once again be reborn in this world.
I was waiting for you to get close to the Shichishito!

[Rikimaru gets into a fighting stance.]

Onikage: It's no use!
             I'll take the Shichishito.
And Lord Mei-oh shall appear before all!

(CUTSCENE: Shadow Riki beats the fake Onikage, then is killed.)

Onikage: The rumor that the Azuma have shadows that have their appearance
             seems to be true.
             Rikimaru! Where are you hiding?
             You'd better come out!
             Fine, then...
             SHICHISHITO!
Call forth an even more powerful Lord Mei-oh!
             Lord Mei-oh!
Allow this Onikage to gaze upon your manly form!(*2)

[Nothing happens with Shichishito, and suddenly Izayoi drops from the sky.]

Onikage: Izayoi...!
             What?!
             That...it can't be...!
Rikimaru: RIKIMARU...HAS ARRIVED!(*3)

(CUTSCENE: Riki beats Onikage.)

Rikimaru: Amen.(*4)
Onikage: You are an exceptional opponent, hiding in the netherworld!
I must express my respect to you sometime!

NOTES:
(*1) Matsunoshin here refers to Lord Gohda, so as not to confuse him with the
name of his territory (also called Gohda).
(*2) Quit snickering. This isn't Tesshu's B-side. "Ooshii" really means "like
a man." The kanji character used here means "male."
(*3) "Kensan" is a cry that announces that someone has arrived at the scene
(like a battle, for instance). I guess you could also translate it as
"RIKIMARU...IZ IN DA HIZZOUSE!!" but somehow it's not quite the same.
(*4) "Namu" is actually a Buddhist prayer, but it is used like "Amen" in
Christianity. It is short for "Namu Amida Butsu," or "Hail the Amida
Buddha," and incidentally "Namu Amida Butsu" is what is written on
     Tesshu's coat.

=================================
III.A.4 Cross the Ronin Village
=================================

Narrator: The one who brought down heaven's punishment(*1) onto Nasu and saved
Matsunoshin from danger at Gohda Castle was not Rikimaru, but a
shadow who handled matters while Rikimaru was asleep. It is
definitely Rikimaru, who recovered fully even as he hid in the
            netherworld, who visits Gohda.
Though unable to open his right eye due to Onikage's sneak attack,
Rikimaru began once again to work as a ninja for Gohda.
Rikimaru, summoned by Matsunoshin, was told that Princess Kiku, who
was married to Lord Amagai(*2), had suddenly stopped sending
            letters.
Concerned about the well-being of the princess, Matsunoshin ordered
Rikimaru to infiltrate Amagai and observe the princess' condition.
Hurrying to the princess' location, Rikimaru saw, upon entering
the area near Amagai Castle, that the town around the castle was
            occupied...
The only way to get to Amagai Castle where Princess Kiku is located
is to cross the gate at the northernmost part of town. And there is
no other way to do so than to cross through a foreign state.

(CUTSCENE: Jinnai watches Rikimaru)

Jinnai: So I'm just a mere onlooker...
	     Lord Tenrai is unexpectedly kind...

NOTES:
(*1) Yes, I'm using "Heaven's Punishment" here as the translation for "Tenchu."
(*2) Yes, according to the Japanese text and speech, Kiku is married to the
lord of Amagai, so she wasn't actually "kidnapped." Rikimaru has just
been sent on a babysitting mission. Yes, I know she's pretty young.
Political marriages were often like that.

=======================================
III.A.5 Rescue the Kidnapped Princess
=======================================

Rikimaru: That took some time. I must hurry.
Narrator: Rikimaru succeeded in crossing the castle town and entering Amagai
Castle. Inside the quiet castle, there is no sign of any of the
Amagai retainers. Suspicious, Rikimaru searches for Princess Kiku
and heads toward the castle tower.
However, someone has already set up mechanical traps around the
            castle.
Rikimaru: Princess...hold on just a bit longer...

(CUTSCENE: Rikimaru meets Kimaira)

Rikimaru: Princess!

[The box opens and Kimaira and Maihime appear.]

Rikimaru: A machine...?
Kimaira: It's a coffin for you and the princess!
Rikimaru: Who are you!?
Kimaira: I am a member of Tenrai's Group of Six.
            Kimaira.
Rikimaru: What do you intend to do with the princess?
Kimaira: I just built a device on subterranean lava.
Just thought I'd shoot you and the princess together into the lava.
            I've kept you waiting, Maihime...
            Now it's your turn!

(CUTSCENE: Rikimaru defeats Kimaira)

Kiku: Rikimaru? Are you Rikimaru?
Rikimaru: Princess. I'm glad you're safe.
Kiku: Rikimaru!!
Ayame: You all right?
Kiku: Sis!
Rikimaru: Take care of the princess.
            I'm going to Ressai's place.
Ayame: Why do you need a blacksmith?

[Rikimaru displays his ruined blade.]

Rikimaru: The steel is completely ruined.
            I can't fight with this.

[Tenrai watches as a candle flickers out.]

Tenrai: Kimaira has failed, has he...

=======================================
III.A.6 Retrieve the Steel for Ressai
=======================================

Narrator: Though he was able to save Princess Kiku, Izayoi took fatal damage,
so Rikimaru goes to visit a swordsmith near the castle named
Hatsugane Ressai. Upon looking at Izayoi, Ressai's look is one of
            disapproval.

Rikimaru: How is it, Ressai?
Ressai: If I only repair the blade, it will be impossible to restore Izayoi
to its original strength. However, if I combine Izayoi with a sword
with strong steel, there might still be hope...

Narrator: Ressai explains that a sword as strong as Izayoi is needed to
restore Izayoi. Of all the swords other than Izayoi, the only one
that comes to mind that has that kind of steel is the Shichishito.
However, the Shichishito was originally the blade of Mei-oh.
It is impossible to tell what kind of effect it will have on Izayoi.
Rikimaru is forced to choose whether or not to combine the
            Shichishito with Izayoi...

##############################################################################
# Choice A (Combine with Shichishito)
#--------------------------------------
# Rikimaru: Ressai, I'd like you to combine it with this.
# Ressai: And this is?
# Rikimaru: It was used by Mei-oh.
# If we use this blade, which held up even under his power...
# Ressai: Are you sure?
##############################################################################

##############################################################################
# Choice B (No new steel)
#-------------------------
# Rikimaru: Ressai, please repair the blade just as it is.
# Ressai: Are you sure?
# Riki: It cannot be helped.
##############################################################################

[Monsters growl outside.]

Rikimaru: I've been discovered here. Ressai, I'm counting on you.
Ressai: Wait. Take this.
Rikimaru: What's that?
Ressai: It is the Muramasa, which has been handed down through our family.
If it meets a human, it will cut the human,
and if it meets a demon, it will cut the demon.
It draws its power from draining life,
so take care not to die.
            There is only one problem.
            I need sufficient steel.
The steel that is here will not be enough.
There is some in storage in the building on the other side of the
            cave...
Rikimaru: I will go and get it.

(CUTSCENE: Rikimaru meets Tenrai.)

Tenrai: Rikimaru, you are really something.
Rikimaru: Who are you?
Tenrai: I am Tenrai...
            Won't you join me?
For you, I'll provide all that you wish.
Rikimaru: You're kidding!
Tenrai: You foolish thing...
            I'm sure we'll meet again.
            Farewell...

[Tatsumaru appears.]

Rikimaru: You're...!?
            No! Impossible!
            Tenrai...What are you scheming?

===============================
III.A.7 Find Ayame's Imposter
===============================

Narrator: Rikimaru succeeded in getting Izayoi fixed and returned to Gohda,
but there was an incident within the castle.
Matsunoshin was attacked by Ayame and suffered an injury. For a
while, Ayame had plotted an escape, but she was captured in a
bamboo forest near the castle and is now in prison.
Rikimaru met Ayame without the knowledge of the jailers, but Ayame
insisted that it was not her doing.
Rikimaru wanted to believe Ayame's words, but there was nothing to
prove her innocence. Ayame tells Rikimaru to head to the bamboo
            forest where she was apprehended.
When Rikimaru finally reached the bamboo forest, he saw an Ayame
that wasn't supposed to be there.

Rikimaru: It's just as Ayame suspected. I shall reveal its true form.

Narrator: Rikimaru stepped into the bamboo forest, but it had by then been
transformed into a forest where monsters known as Shikigami roamed,
            having been released by someone...

(CUTSCENE: Kagura watches Rikimaru and summons Shikigami.)

Kagura: It worked well. It's almost time...

(CUTSCENE: Rikimaru's battle with "Ayame")

Ayame: You're a friend, right?
Do you mean to point your sword at me?
Rikimaru: Friend...
            The Ayame I know...
            Has never used that word!
Ayame: Can you win?
            Against ME?

(CUTSCENE: Rikimaru beats Hyakubake)

Rikimaru: So that's who you really are!
Hyakubake: You were completely taken in...
Not knowing it was a trap...
Rikimaru: What?
Whose plan was this? Answer me!

[Hyakubake laughs and bites off his tongue.]

Rikimaru: He bit off his tongue...

[Tenrai watches another candle go out.]

Tenrai: Hyakubake, you've done well...
            Ganda! Go with Kagura.
Ganda: Understood...

======================================
III.A.8 Infiltrate the Buddha Temple
======================================

Sekiya: My lord! We have a problem!
Gohda: What is it?
Sekiya: Someone has taken over the Great Buddha Temple at the border!

Narrator: The Great Buddha Temple on the border has been taken over by
Tenrai's gang. While on the surface it appears to be a temple, it
was actually created to be used for border defense.
The trap set by Hyakubake was a crafty ploy by Tenrai to lure
Rikimaru away and to prevent Ayame from leaving Gohda Castle.
If something is not done, the land will be vulnerable to attacks by
outside territories, so Matsunoshin orders Rikimaru, who has
returned to the castle, to retake the Great Buddha Temple.
Rikimaru finally arrived at the Great Buddha Temple, but the
pillars supporting it blocked his progress.

Rikimaru: I've got no choice but to enter through here. But it's so high
            up...I must proceed with caution.

(CUTSCENE: Rikimaru and Kagura)

Kagura: I am Kagura, one of Tenrai's Group of Six.
            And you shall die here.
            Ganda, demonstrate your power!
Rikimaru: Those talismans are the same ones as those I saw in the bamboo
            forest.
            So this was her doing!

(CUTSCENE: Riki defeats Kagura)

Rikimaru: The effect of the talismans has been neutralized.

[Tatsumaru appears and stabs Ganda.]

Rikimaru: You're Tatsumaru...right?
Tenrai, you bastard...how could you do such a thing...!!

(CUTSCENE: Riki defeats Tatsumaru)

Tatsumaru: There is something I must tell you.
Rikimaru: Tatsumaru...have you come to your senses?
Tatsumaru: In your right eye is sealed the art of Dohjutsu(*1).
Rikimaru: Dohjutsu?
Tatsumaru: Right.
You were still not ready, so Master sealed the art in your right
            eye.
Rikimaru: But my right eye...
Tatsumaru: Your right eye still lives.
            Your right eye...

[Tenrai's hand moves over a candle.]

Tenrai: Enough!
Tatsumaru, your task is already finished.
Did you think you could deceive me?
I'll show that body of yours what it means to defy me!

Rikimaru: Tenrai!!
            I can't move...!
Tenrai: Nothing you try will work.
I've cast a spell on you, too.
            I'll ask you once more.
            Rikimaru, will you join me?
Tatsumaru: No! You mustn't!
            Your right eye...
Make the blood flow back into your right eye!
If you use all your power...
            you can defeat even Tenrai!
Tenrai: Interesting.
            One more push...

[Tatsumaru dies.]

Rikimaru: Tatsumaru...
            BROTHER!!!!!
Tenrai: If you hate me, on the night of the full moon two days from now,
the mist over the ocean will lift.
Come to the fortress floating there.

(CUTSCENE: Tenrai and The Eye)

Tenrai: Like a true ninja...
You want to go wild too, don't you?
            It's almost time...

==============================================
III.A.9 Assassinate the Evil Tenrai (Part I)
==============================================

Narrator: Rikimaru was taken back to Gohda, and has regained consciousness.
Ayame informs him that he had been unconscious for two whole days.
Today, when he awakes, the moon is full and the tide is high.
Rikimaru cannot miss the opportunity presented today--his first and
last--so, heavily wounded, he leaves Gohda Castle and advances
            toward Tenrai's fortress.
Ayame, who had been following him, reaches Tenrai's fortress
together with Rikimaru. However, Rikimaru urges Ayame to turn
            back.

Rikimaru: Ayame, go back.
Ayame: Are you kidding? What can you possibly do in your condition?
Rikimaru: If this major enemy is eliminated, Lord Gohda will be able to
develop his forces. I need you to bring reinforcements.
Ayame: ...Fine, then.

(CUTSCENE: Battle with Onikage)

# Rikimaru: Izayoi...What's happening?
# Onikage: Shichishito has awakened.
# Izayoi will no longer do your bidding.
# Rikimaru: What do you mean?
# Onikage: I planned for you to combine Shichishito with Izayoi.
# Don't you understand?
# Shichishito is draining Izayoi's power.
# I went through a lot of trouble to get Tatsumaru to give Izayoi to
# you!
# Rikimaru: But Tatsumaru had lost his memory!
# Onikage: His memory?
# The Izayoi that called you back from the netherworld...that was
# from him!
# Rikimaru: What?!
# Onikage: As long as you don't kill me, the curse of the Shichishito will
# never be lifted.
# There is no other way for you but to fight me and die!

# Onikage: Haven't you been a lot of trouble.
# Think you can beat me with that?
# Rikimaru: Onikage, in the name of the Azuma Shinobi-ryu clan, I shall bring
# Heaven's Punishment down onto you!
##############################################################################

(CUTSCENE: Riki defeats Onikage)

Onikage: Lord Mei-oh...
Once again...I have been unable to fulfill your wishes...
            Forgive me...!!

================================================
III.A.10 Assassinate the Evil Tenrai (Part II)
================================================
(CUTSCENE: Riki's first battle with Tenrai)

Tenrai: Rikimaru, won't you join me?
Your mastery of the darkness within you...
It would be a shame to let it go to waste.
Rikimaru: Don't make me laugh!
I do not possess such a thing!
Tenrai: You just don't realize it yet.
You had no problem overcoming Onikage's trap...
and what's more, you used the corpse of your brother as a step to
get here. That kind of strength...
If that is not mastery of darkness, what is it?
Rikimaru: SILENCE!

(CUTSCENE: Before Riki's second "battle" with Tenrai (Tenrai is invincible))

Rikimaru: After taking so many injuries, you're still...?
Tenrai: You would go to such lengths to oppose me?
            Very well!
Then I shall take your power.
            Mei-oh!
            Give me your power!

[Tenrai begins to absorb power.]

Tenrai: It is good!
All of the souls of the people I have killed for this day shall
            enter me!
Rikimaru: Is that what you really are!?
Tenrai: Enough talk!
            Now come at me!

(CUTSCENE: Before Riki's actual second battle with Tenrai)
[Tenrai hits Riki in his other eye.]

Tenrai: What's wrong?
            Are you finished?
Rikimaru: Shit! Not my left eye, too...!
            No!

[Suddenly, Riki hears Tatsumaru's voice...]

Tatsumaru: Your right eye...
Make the blood flow back into your right eye!
Do that, and your eye will be able to open once again!
Rikimaru: My right eye...
Tatsumaru: All your power...
Rikimaru: All my...
            ...power...
Rikimaru &: USE IT!!
Tatsumaru

(CUTSCENE: Sekiya and Gohda)

Gohda: Those shadows can engulf and defeat even a great darkness...
They are shadows that we can completely depend on.
             Don't you think so, Sekiya?

(FINAL CUTSCENE AFTER CREDITS: Onikage and candles)

Onikage: I have kept you waiting...
Voice: I have become tired of waiting in slumber...
Onikage: Please rage on to your heart's content.
             The time has come.

III.B AYAME'S MISSIONS

==================================
III.B.1 Rescue the Village Girls
==================================
Narrator: A year has passed since the battle with Mei-oh.
The land of Gohda appeared to be at peace, but cases of young
girls being kidnapped occurred frequently in the territory.
News of the incidents reached Matsunoshin's ears, and, judging the
matter to be serious, Matsunoshin left no stone unturned and
finally discovered that the girls were at a shrine on Mount
             Shirasagi.
Matsunoshin gives Ayame an order for the first time in about a
             year.

Gohda: Ayame, I'm counting on you to investigate and settle this
             incident.
Ayame: It should be a good workout.

(CUTSCENE: Ayame before the battle with Tajima)

Girl: No! Please have mercy!
Tajima: What the hell are you talking about?
You think I can stop after coming so far?
Girl: But even so...I'm not ready...
Tajima: Heey! I can't hold back any more!
             Here I go!
Ayame: Hold it right there!
Tajima: Huh? What the hell do you want?
             So, you're on of Gohda's

[The girl escapes.]

Tajima: Hey! Hey!
If you escape, I won't get paid by Echigoya...!
Ayame: Echigoya?
Tajima: Oops! This is bad.
Well anyway, you can die for me!

===================================
III.B.2 Execute the Evil Merchant
===================================

Narrator: Tajima the kidnapper received Heaven's Punishment at the hands of
             Ayame.
From the clue "Echigoya" that Tajima let slip, Ayame realizes
that Echigoya was connected to the kidnappings.
Tokubei, the son of the Echigoya(*1) who one year ago was punished
by Matsunoshin, inherited the family business.
Tokubei conspired with elder statesman Nasu to kidnap village
girls, who would then be sold by a mysterious organization.
Ayame, under orders from Matsunoshin, quickly infiltrates the
             Echigoya mansion.

(CUTSCENE: Tokubei and Nasu and a jewel)

Tokubei: Splendid!
             How about this radiance?
Nasu: Is that the jewel that you've been searching for since your
             father's time?
Tokubei: Yees.
This is the Jewel of Earth, and according to the rumor,
there are two other jewels exactly like this one in Gohda's
             territory,
and if you collect all three, an incredible treasure will be
             yours...
Nasu: That's a really interesting thing...
Tokubei: Which one are you talking about?
Nasu: You already know, don't you...
Tokubei: Yes, I do...
Ayame: What an interesting story!
Nasu: You! You're one of Gohda's dogs!
Ayame: Well then...Let's put aside the story of the jewels.
You guys have gone just a bit too far.
Tokubei: Hey! Come out, COME OUT!

[Ayame dispatches the guards.]

Tokubei: Oh, I'll be leaving now...
Nasu: Hmph! Coward!
You shall rust my blade, ninja scum!

(CUTSCENE: Ayame kills Nasu.)

Nasu: I-I-Impossible!
Ayame: Echigoya...playing hide-and-seek like your old man, are you?

(CUTSCENE: Ayame finds Tokubei.)

Tokubei: W-Wait!
             That wasn't the agreement!
I-If it's money you want, I'll pay anything!
             H-Help m-

[Tokubei is killed as Ayame arrives.]

Ayame: What's this?
He doesn't seem to have the jewel.
             What's going on...

[A blue light begins to speak.]

Tenrai: It's finally in my hands...
I've already taken steps for the Jewel of Virtue that Gohda has.
             It'll soon be your turn.
You should be looking forward to it!

NOTES:
(*1) Echigoya is a family name, which is why both father and son are called
Echigoya. The business they own is also named "Echigoya."

========================================
III.B.3 Assassinate the Traitor Hamada
========================================

Narrator: Returning to the castle, Ayame tells Matsunoshin of Echigoya's
mysterious death and about the jewel he had. However,
Matsunoshin only thanked her for taking care of the case, and
would say nothing about the jewels.
Several months later, an incident took place while Ayame was
away from the castle. Kohnosuke Hamada, a retainer of Gohda's,
suddenly rebelled and took Matsunoshin as a hostage.
Hamada demands that the Jewel of Virtue be handed over. Then as
if coordinated with Hamada's actions, a mysterious ninja group
             stormed Gohda Castle.
It was late when Ayame hurried to find Matsunoshin, who is now a
             captive in the castle.

(CUTSCENE: Ayame finds Lord Gohda and Hamada.)

Hamada: Hey! Just try and come closer!
             Matsunoshin's a dead man!
Sekiya: Ayame, we must retreat!
Ayame: Can't be helped, huh!

[Ayame throws a knife at Hamada and Lord Gohda escapes.]

Gohda: Ayame, I thank you!
Ayame: Can you guys back off a bit?
I have to punish this traitor.
Gohda: Yes. I'm counting on you!
Hamada: Grr! Now that it's come to this, I don't care what happens!
             I'll wipe you all out!!

==================================
III.B.4 Retrieve the Yoto Swords
==================================

Tenrai: Heh heh heh...
The Jewel of Earth is already in my possession. The Jewel of
Heaven will also soon be mine. And I will definitely take the
Jewel of Virtue that you possess!
Gohda: You! You're not Hamada! Who are you?
Tenrai: My name is Tenrai. Farewell! MUAHAHAHAAA!!

Narrator: A mysterious voice emanates from the apparently dead Hamada, and
its owner is a mysterious man named Tenrai.
Tenrai declared himself to be a new enemy after the three jewels
of "Heaven," "Earth," and "Virtue," which have been handed down
through the Gohda family for generations. Together, the "Jewels
of Heaven, Earth, and Virtue" make it possible to possess the
             power to rule the world.
Now, with the location of the Jewel of Heaven unknown, the Gohda
family is left with only the Jewel of Virtue.
It is revealed that Tenrai, who controlled the dead Hamada and
spoke to Matsunoshin, is a practitioner of the black arts.
In order to protect the jewel, Matsunoshin felt that an equal
amount of sorcerous power would be necessary, and he remembers
an enchanted set of swords which have been passed down from
             ancient times.
The enchanted swords(*1) are sealed within a shrine at the
abandoned Hogenji temple, and they can be released by destroying
             five hidden sealing stones.
Ayame, under orders from Matsunoshin, headed to Hogenji, where
she must obtain the enchanted swords, but waiting for her were
monsters who cannot be felled by Ayame's weapons. Ayame hurries
to the main shrine where the swords are sealed.

(STILL FRAME CUTSCENE: Ayame finds the Yoto Swords)

Narrator: Ayame succeeded in breaking the seals of the enchanted swords
             Kasumi and Shizuku(*2).
Ayame, who must take part in the upcoming battle with Tenrai,
takes the enchanted swords. However, the instant she takes them,
she feels the power being drained from every part of her body by
the swords. These are the enchanted blades Kasumi and Shizuku,
which whittle away the life force of the one who holds them, even
             as they cut demons.
With no time for Ayame to be surprised at the power of the
swords, a giant undead warrior, created by Tenrai's hand, stands
in her way with a roar.

[Monster stomps and roars.]
Ayame: You'll be a good opponent to test my blade on!

NOTES:
(*1) "Yoto" as in "Yoto Swords," translates to "enchanted blades."
(*2) "Kasumi" means "mist." "Shizuku" means "droplets."

==========================================
III.B.5 Go to the Red House of Zennosuke
==========================================

Narrator: Two months have passed since Ayame obtained the enchanted swords
             Kasumi and Shizuku.
Matsunoshin, in order to prevent the still-missing "Jewel of
Heaven" from falling into Tenrai's hands, spared no effort in
             searching for it.
He finally discovered that an old man named Zennosuke Ikomaya(*1)
who lives in the neighboring territory of Amagai, knows something
             about the jewel.
Matsunoshin orders Ayame to go to Zennosuke and get him to give
her any information, no matter how trivial, about the Jewel of
             Heaven.
At the same time, though, a ninja group in Tenrai's service was
             showing signs of dangerous developments...

(CUTSCENE: Ayame finds Zennosuke dead.)

Ayame: I was too late...

[Ayame dodges a flying needle.]

Ayame: Who's there?
Tesshu: YOU!
Ayame: Hmmm...So you're the one who killed the old man?
Tesshu: Acting as if you don't know a goddamn thing...
I shall fulfill my final duty!

(CUTSCENE: Ayame beats down Tesshu)

Tesshu: W-Wait a minute!
Ayame: Now you're begging for your life?
Tesshu: Your fighting style...it's Azuma Shinobi-ryu, right?
Ayame: How do you know?
Tesshu: I see.
Anyway, my fight with you is over.
I was always strictly told by the motojime(*2) not to get
involved with the Azuma Shinobi-ryu clan.
Besides, it wasn't you who killed him either.
Ayame: Who the hell are you?
Tesshu: I'm just a humble town doctor by the name of Tesshu Fujioka.
Well, looks like there'll be some trouble, so I'm outta here.
Ayame: Wait!
You know anything about the Jewel of Heaven?
Tesshu: Hmmm...Never heard of it.
             Sorry about the mistake earlier.
             See ya!
Ayame: I heard a rumor...that unresolvable grudges can be resolved with
             money.
             He's...a hired assassin...

(CUTSCENE: Ayame meets Rikimaru)

Rikimaru: Ayame!
Ayame: Rikimaru?
Rikimaru: I'm not a ghost.
I had my reasons for not returning to Gohda, but that's over now.

[Ayame slashes at "Rikimaru."]

Rikimaru: Wha..?! What's wrong with you, Ayame?
Ayame: What is it, indeed...maybe a woman's intuition...
             Mr. Imposter!
Rikimaru: I am the real Rikimaru.
And I'll fight to prove it.

(CUTSCENE: Ayame defeats Hyakubake.)

Ayame: I'm too much for you.

[Ayame gets hit with a dart]

Ayame: D-dammit...
Kimaira: Well, well.
I've got a great present for Lord Tenrai...
Tesshu: Crap!

NOTES:
(*1) In the Japanese version, the name of the old man is "Ikomaya" and not
"Otou."
(*2) While the English version has Zennosuke as Tesshu's "boss," a "motojime"
(which is the term used in the Japanese) is a bit more complex. Typically,
a "motojime" would be in charge of mission assignments and cash. They were
usually upstanding members of society, and they virtually never did any actual
killing. Sort of like a "manager."

===================================
III.B.6 Escape from Amagai Castle
===================================

Narrator: Captured by Kimaira, Ayame awaits the hour of her execution on
the top floor of the tower of a castle filled with traps.
However, the ninja henchman guarding her dies suddenly before
her eyes. The man who rescued Ayame was Tesshu Fujioka, a
             hired assassin.
Tesshu says, "The jewel is hidden in the eye of the Great Buddha
inside the Great Buddha Temple," and then disappears from Ayame's
             sight.

(CUTSCENE: Before the battle with Kimaira)

Ayame: Really, poking his friggin' nose into other people's business...
Kimaira: I see...so it's in the Great Buddha's eye.
Didn't think it would be hidden someplace like that.
Ayame: It was you, huh?
You're gonna pay dearly for what you did back there!
Kimaira: I am one of Tenrai's Group of Six, Kimaira.
You're going to play with me a bit longer.
             Maihime!!

(STILL CUTSCENE: Ayame defeats Kimaira)

Narrator: Immediately before he dies, Kimaira mentions that, upon his
death, a device that will blast poisonous smoke throughout the
castle will be activated. There is very little time before the
             device begins functioning.
Within that time, Ayame must make it to the first floor of the
trick castle and disable the smoke generator.

Narrator: Ayame somehow managed to disable the generator, but Onikage, who
is supposed to be dead, appeared there.
Ayame couldn't believe her eyes, but then yet another shadow
drops down in front of her.
             It is Rikimaru.

Ayame: Seems like this time you're the real thing!
Rikimaru: What are you talking about?
Ayame: Never mind, it's nothing.
Rikimaru: But to have the power of resurrection...
Tenrai seems to be a troublesome opponent.
Ayame: No kidding!
More than that, though, I found out where the Jewel of Heaven is.
It's in the eye of the Great Buddha at the Great Buddha Temple.
Rikimaru: Really? Good.
Leave this to me, and hurry to the Great Buddha Temple!

##############################################################################
# Choice A (Let Rikimaru fight Onikage)
#--------------------------------------
# Ayame: OK, I'll let you take care of it.
# Rikimaru: Fine.
# Onikage: I must thank Lord Tenrai...
# For giving me a chance to kill you again!
# Rikimaru: Come on!
##############################################################################

##############################################################################
# Choice B (Fight Onikage yourself)
#-------------------------
# Ayame: Well, since I'm already here...
# I'll take him down.
# Rikimaru: ...Is that so.
# Then I'll go on ahead back to the castle!
# Ayame: Now then.
# Onikage: So a kunoichi(*1) is my opponent...
# That's just fine! I'm really going to enjoy this!
#
# (CUTSCENE: Ayame defeats Onikage)
#
# Onikage: Kunoichi...
# I shall let you keep your life for now...
# Ayame: So he's a monster...
##############################################################################

NOTES:
(*1) A kunoichi, as you might be aware, is a female ninja. The name "kunoichi"
is derived from the fact that the three characters "ku" (?-), "no" (?m) and
"ichi" (?e) can be combined to form the character "onna," which means "woman"
(E).

======================================
III.B.7 Retrieve the Jewel of Heaven
======================================

Narrator: Based on Tesshu Fujioka's information, Ayame headed to the Great
Buddha Temple to get the Jewel of Heaven.
But Ayame arrived just a little too late--using information
provided by Kimaira, a group of komuso(*1) led by "Ganda," one of
Tenrai's Group of Six, has already taken over the Great Buddha
            Temple.
As Ayame hurries to the Great Buddha's face, Ganda, one of Tenrai's
Group of Six, blocks her way.

Ganda: I am Ganda, one of Tenrai's Group of Six. I cannot let you pass.
Ayame: Well, now that you've said that, I really want to pass through now!

(CUTSCENE: Ayame defeats Ganda)

Ganda: Lord Tenrai...
I could not complete my mission...
Ayame: So...it's in here...

(CUTSCENE: Ayame finds the Great Buddha and Tatsumaru)

Tatsumaru: What's wrong? You're too late.
Ayame: Y-You!?
            T-Tatsumaru!?
So Tenrai's gotten to you, too...
Tatsumaru: Hmph.
Ayame: Hold it right there!
I can't let anyone give that to him...not even you!
Tatsumaru: Really...
            Give it up.
You'll never beat me the way you are now!
But when the time comes, we shall fight, like it or not.
            Farewell...
Ayame: This must be a bad dream...really...

[Tatsumaru runs away]

Tatsumaru: She's become strong...

NOTES:
(*1) A komuso is a type of Zen Buddhist priest. They often wear straw baskets
on their heads and play the "shakuhachi" (a kind of vertical bamboo flute).

===============================
III.B.8 Rescue Counsel Sekiya
===============================

Narrator: Matsunoshin, who had two of the jewels stolen by Tenrai, decides
to launch a surprise attack on Tenrai.
Matsunoshin, who was able to take the island on the ocean's
surface where Tenrai's fortress (the base of Tenrai and his
followers) is located, discovers that there is a path that leads
from a limestone cavern in the mountains, down beneath the ocean
             floor to Tenrai's fortress.
But in obtaining this information, many casualties were suffered,
and many soldiers, together with Naotada Sekiya, who was
responsible for conducting the attack, were captured.
After much worrying, Matsunoshin gives Ayame a difficult order.
Ayame's mission is to rescue Naotada Sekiya. Then she is to
cross through the cave and eliminate Tenrai.
Thus, the final plan to eliminate Tenrai using only two people
(with Rikimaru expected to join the fight later due to a prior
             assignment) gets underway.
Princess Kiku sees Ayame off as Ayame prepares to fight single-
handedly, and as a good-luck charm for the final battle, gives
Ayame the "sisters' bells" that she and Ayame share.

Kiku: Big sister...I'm not giving these bells to you...just lending them
             to you, OK?
Ayame: Kiku...Ah, I musn't forget to return what I borrow, right? Well,
             I'll be back!
Kiku: OK! Come back safely!

(STILL CUTSCENE: Ayame finds Sekiya)

Narrator: Sekiya was rescued by Ayame. But the path to Tenrai's fortress
is blocked by a large rock formation. Sekiya suggested clearing
the path by blowing up the rock at its weakest point.

Sekiya: I've marked on the map the locations of the explosives and the
rock you need to blow up. Go there and blow up the rock!

(STILL CUTSCENE: Ayame blows up the rock)

Narrator: The rock formation has been destroyed and the path to Tenrai's
fortress has been cleared. However, at that moment, Sekiya's
chest is pierced by a Shikigami spirit attack.

(CUTSCENE: Sekiya falls.)

Ayame: Hey! Are you all right?
Sekiya: I-I'm done for...
The land, our lord, Princess Kiku...take care of them...

[Sekiya dies.]

Ayame: G-Gramps!
             Hey!

[Kagura laughs.]

Kagura: What a tearjerking scene!
             I couldn't help crying!
             But don't worry.
I'll soon send you to join the old man so he won't be lonely!
Ayame: Shut up, bitch...
             ...DIE!

(CUTSCENE: Ayame defeats Kagura)

Kagura: My...my blood is flowing out...
             I'm going to die, aren't I...
Ayame: Go apologize to Gramps in the other world!

==============================================
III.B.9 Assassinate the Evil Tenrai (Part I)
==============================================

Narrator: After a difficult battle, Ayame succeeded in defeating Kagura.
After leaving the cave, Tenrai's fortress, floating eerily in the
fog, appears befor Ayame's eyes. Without any hesitation, Ayame
             steps into the fortress.

(CUTSCENE: Ayame meets Tatsumaru)

Ayame: I thought you'd show up sooner or later.
Tatsumaru: Ayame...It seems that I must kill you this time.
Ayame: Tatsumaru...
if you won't wake up from your nightmare yourself...!

(CUTSCENE: Ayame defeats Tatsumaru)

Tatsumaru: Ayame...you've grown strong...
Ayame: Tatsumaru? It can't be...

# Hurry and go on ahead!

# After this, you'd better be ready!

# Onikage: Ugh... L-Let go!
# Tatsumaru: We are both people who have no business being in this world, so
# why don't we return to hell together?
# Farewell, Ayame...
# Ayame: Dumbass...
# You always have to have it your way...

III.B.10 Assassinate the Evil Tenrai (Part II)
===============================================

(CUTSCENE: Ayame meets Tenrai)

Ayame: Where am I?
Tenrai: Welcome to my fortress.
Did you enjoy all the welcome parties I arranged for you?
Ayame: So you're Tenrai?
Tenrai: Indeed.
Ayame: Hmmm...So what the hell are you up to here?
Tenrai: I trust that you know the legend of the jewels?
With the power of the jewels, I shall resurrect Mei-oh to be my
             slave.
I will take his dark power and rule this world.
             Wonderful, don't you think?
Ayame: Huh...so you've come up with another dangerous idea.
             Well anyway, return the jewels.
             Then...die.
Tenrai: Heh heh heh...what lovely eyes.
I simply must have your corpse!

(CUTSCENE: Ayame defeats Tenrai for the first time)

Tenrai: Heh heh heh...You have been a fine adversary, up to now.
I compliment you on a job well done.
But what will you do next?
Jewels! Become my strength and destroy this person!
             Vajra il Avilgarma!

[Power flows through Tenrai.]

Tenrai: Excellent! It is EXCELLENT..!
Ayame: W-What's this feeling?
             Aggh...my strength...

[The bells that Ayame has shine.]

Ayame: What's this?
Tenrai: Gaah! What's that light...!?
M-my power is being drained from my body...
             W-WHY...!?
Ayame: My strength's coming back...
Looks like it's now or never!
Tenrai: Impudent girl!
As it is, I still have enough to handle you!

##############################################################################
# Choice A (Let Rikimaru fight Onikage)
#--------------------------------------
# Tenrai: I-Impossible...
# I-I'm not supposed to die...
# I no longer care about ruling this world.
# But I will take you to hell with me!
# MEI-OH!
# Feed on my body and return to life!
# Ayame: Mei-oh...?
# This is not very good...
#
# [Rikimaru and Tatsumaru arrive.]
#
# Ayame: Rikimaru!? And...
# Tatsumaru: Rikimaru! Leave this to me. Take Ayame and go!
# Rikimaru: You...
# Tatsumaru: I need to do something useful in the end at least.
# Rikimaru: ...Understood...
# Can you stand?
# Let's go, Ayame!
# Ayame: Tatsu...
# Tatsumaru: What are you doing?
# GO, NOW!
# Ayame: Ugh...We're going, Rikimaru!
#
# [Ayame and Rikimaru leave.]
#
# Tatsumaru: They've finally left...
# Well then...Dad...
# Will this allow me to atone a bit for my sins?
# I've stayed here a bit too long.
# Now I'll go back there...
# Wait for me, won't you...Kagami...
#
# [Ayame on the roof]
#
# Gohda: Ayame, those bells were originally a pair made of the Jewel of
# Virtue.
# It seems that the Jewels of Heaven and Earth are the source of
# a power that can control the world.
# However, should their power get out of control, the Jewel of
# Virtue was created to keep that power in check.
# So of course I thought that you and Kiku should have those bells.
#
# Ayame: Brother...
# Kiku: Sis!

# Well, it's time to get out of here.
#
# [One month later...]
#
# Onikage: Kunoichi.....!
# Rikimaru: Now, you've finally been able to die!
# Onikage...
# Ayame: Rikimaru...
# Rikimaru: Ayame, I have a message from our lord.
# The bells that you and Princess Kiku have...
# It seems that they were forged from the Jewel of Virtue.
# And that Jewel of Virtue...
# When the power of the Jewels of Heaven and Earth is used wrongly,
# that Jewel of Virtue keeps that power in check.
# But it was wrong of our lord...
# To know it and not say anything about it.
# Well, let's go home!
# Ayame: Yeah...Let's go!

III.C. Tesshu's Missions

=======================================
III.C.1 Assassinate Nasu and Echigoya
=======================================

Narrator: People have grudges that cannot be settled. However, if one looks
around, there are people who can settle those kinds of grudges.
People call them "shimatsu-ya."(*1) Theirs is a shady business of
             murder for hire.
The name of the man who appears here is Tesshu Fujioka.
He is a man who lives in a hovel in Gohda's castle town, and to
most people he makes a living as an acupuncturist.
It was late at night when his other side, that of a "shimatsu-ya,"
             reared its head.
But the job this time is unusually important, requiring two months
             of advance preparation.
It is finally the night where success or failure will be
             determined.
The targets are two: Tokubei Echigoya and Nasu, Gohda's elder
statesman. They are quite evil--Tokubei took away village girls
as payments for debt, and Nasu sold them off to outside lands.
The payment for the job has been rising day by day.

(CUTSCENE: Tesshu finds Tokubei)

Tesshu: You're Mr. Echigoya, right?

[Tesshu kills Echigoya.]

Tesshu: Be nice to your father in the other world.
             Where's Nasu?
Senkichi: It looks like he's further within the mansion.
Tesshu: Got it.
Tell the motojime(*2) that I'll finish up within an hour.
Senkichi: OK.

(CUTSCENE: Tesshu reaches Nasu.)

Nasu: Mmph!
Rikimaru: You evildoers give our lord a bad name!
In the name of heaven, I will punish you!
Nasu: S-Scoundrel!

[Tesshu runs in.]

Tesshu: This is...!

[Tesshu finds Nasu dead, then sees Rikimaru.]

Tesshu: Bastard!
             Who the hell was that?

Zennosuke: One of Gohda's ninjas, Tesshu.

Tesshu: Motojime...you saw it?

Narrator: This man is called Zennosuke Ikomaya.
He is a motojime who assists Tesshu in his dark business.

Tesshu: It's just as you see it.
We can't get our money for the job.

Zennosuke: Tesshu...not that ninja.
Don't think about killing him somehow.

NOTES:
(*1) "Shimatsu-ya," or "hired assassin," literally means "person who terminates."
(*2) A "motojime" is not always a boss. He is often a manager who handles
assignments and payment for the shimatsu-ya, and they usually never do any
actual killing; since they are often the public face of the shimatsu-ya's
operations and must therefore be "upstanding" members of society. See Ayame's
mission above.

=================================
III.C.2 Teach Rikimaru a Lesson
=================================

Narrator: There is no way that Tesshu can calm down after having his prey
stolen from him. Tesshu pressed Zennosuke for information
about Gohda's ninjas. Fixing Tesshu with a cold stare, Zennosuke
glibly gives Tesshu the least amount of information possible.
The name of the man in the ninja garb is Rikimaru. He is a
shadow of the master of Gohda Castle, Matsunoshin Gohda, and a
master of the Azuma style of the ninja arts. Saying only that,
              Zennosuke fell silent.
Tesshu gave up on Zennosuke, who would not say any more no matter
how much he was asked, and decided to leave Zennosuke's house.
Facing the back of a slightly dejected Tesshu, Zennosuke said
to be sure not to get involved with the Azuma-ryu. But that is
not going to work. Two months of work were ruined in an instant,
and he ended up not being able to receive a rare fee.
Tesshu, ignoring Zennosuke's orders, sneaked into Gohda Castle.
Tesshu Fujioka is a man who is particular about seeing things
through to the end when money is involved.

Tesshu: Shall I go kill some people until I can catch him off guard?

(CUTSCENE: Tesshu finds Rikimaru)

Rikimaru: I cannot let you go any further.
Tesshu: I already know that.
              My objective is you...

(CUTSCENE: Tesshu and Rikimaru fight, and Riki's sword stops.)

Tesshu: Why did you stop?
Rikimaru: Because you stopped your needle.
Tesshu: I didn't intend to put anyone's life at risk.
I'm satisfied with what happened so far.
              But...
If we meet again I will show no mercy.

III.C.3 Rendezvous with Senkichi by the Waterfalls
====================================================

Narrator: Half a month has passed since the missed attempt to bring down
Nasu. Tesshu receives a new job from Zennosuke and is now at
the Great Buddha Temple on the border.
The headquarters of the "Hayarimajinai"(*1) sect, which bought
up village girls through Nasu and Tokubei, is in this Great
Buddha Temple. In order to make up for the failure of the Nasu
job, Zennosuke suggests that Tesshu accepts a job to terminate
the mysterious priest Ganda, founder of the Hayarimajinai.
Tesshu does not hesitate to take the job.
Ganda cannot be taken down with one blow, so Tesshu is forced
              into a boneshattering fight.

(STILL CUTSCENE: Tesshu defeats Ganda)

Narrator: Tesshu succeeds in finishing off Ganda. However, the
area is already surrounded by a komuso(*2) group. The sound
of voices chanting the "Nembutsu"(*3) surround Tesshu. A
strange Nembutsu from enemies he cannot see. Tesshu decides
              to escape quickly.

(CUTSCENE: Tesshu steps outside after leaving the Temple)

Tesshu: There're no side paths anywhere.

[Tesshu is surrounded by swords.]

Jinnai: You've been a pain in the neck.
Tesshu: You're...Jinnai!
Jinnai: I have something to tell you.
              You're coming with me.

NOTES:
(*1) "Hayarimajinai" literally means "fashionable curse." And no, there is
no such sect.
(*2) See Note 1 in section III.B.7 above.
(*3) The "Nembutsu" is a Buddhist prayer. It consists of the words "Namu
Amida Butsu" ("Hail to the Amida Buddha") over and over. (Also see III.A.3,
note 4)

==========================================
III.C.4 Escape from the Limestone Cavern
==========================================

Narrator: It was an unexpected reunion for Tesshu. The man in the straw
hat was a former fellow shimatsu-ya, Jinnai. Tesshu was hit
hard on the head, but when he awakens he is in a prison. Across
               from the prison is Jinnai.
Everything but his clothes had been taken away. He must get
his assassin's tools back and somehow escape...

(CUTSCENE: Tesshu in prison)

Tesshu: Let me out.
Jinnai: It depends on your answer.
Will you accept a job for me?
Tesshu: A job?
Jinnai: I want you to terminate Zennosuke.
Tesshu: The motojime?
Jinnai: Well?
Tesshu: You really think I'm going to accept?
Jinnai: If that's the case, stay there until you die.
Tesshu: Hey! Bastard!
               Let me out, dammit! Hey!
               [laughs] You've grown old, Jinnai.
               No joke.
               Anyway, time to split.
And I better get my "doctor's equipment," too.

=========================================
III.C.5 Go to the House in the Cemetery
=========================================

Narrator: Tesshu felt uneasy. His intuition whispered that on a night
like this, something bloody would take place.
He didn't want this gut feeling to be correct. He sets out for
the small shrine in the cemetery used for delivering payments
               for jobs.
               Tesshu's unease becomes even stronger.
Arriving at the cemetery, Tesshu cursed his intuition, which
often proved to be too right.
Waiting for him in the cemetery are Jinnai's henchmen, and
beyond that, the shrine he is looking for.

=============================
III.C.6 Return to Zennosuke
=============================

Senkichi: Those guys...they're going after the motojime, to the town...
Tesshu: Got it. Don't talk any more!
Senkichi: ...Counting on you...

Narrator: Senkichi was dead. Tesshu quickly returns to Gohda town.
Tesshu didn't need to use his intuition to know that Jinnai
and his followers had already made the town their own.
               Tesshu's feet do not hesitate.
He focuses on going straight to Zennosuke's house.
But a person who merely kills is known as a cold-blooded beast,
while Tesshu is a shimatsu-ya. As long as he doesn't receive
money, he will not commit murder.

(CUTSCENE: Tesshu finds Zennosuke)

Tesshu: Motojime...
Zennosuke: Tesshu...
Will you take a job for me?
               The client would be me.
Tesshu: Kill Jinnai, right?
Zennosuke: Those guys want to wipe out this town.
They came to kill me, because I am in their way.
Tesshu: You're hurt...?
Zennosuke: Tesshu, don't say foolish things.
               I am Zennosuke Ikomaya.
Tesshu: That was a stupid question.
Zennosuke: After this job, I'm thinking of washing my hands of this
               business.
Tesshu: Motojime, I was just thinking of cutting my ties with you, too.
Zennosuke: That's just perfect.
Tesshu: Take care of yourself.
Zennosuke: You too, Tesshu...good luck...

(CUTSCENE: Tesshu finds Jinnai)

Tesshu: Well, let's get started.
Jinnai: You don't want to join me?
Tesshu: Once I've accepted a job, I can't just trash it.
Jinnai: Then let's do this quickly...

(CUTSCENE: Tesshu defeats Ukyo Jinnai)

Tesshu: Why don't you come out now...
               Sakyo!
Sakyo: So you realized it.
Tesshu: Ukyo tricks them, then Sakyo kills them.
Even the people that are killed don't usually realize that you
               guys are twins.
Sakyo: That was when we were shimatsu-ya.
There is only one who will seize the nation...Sakyo Jinnai.
I don't need this straw hat anymore, either.
Tesshu: You can still make it.
I'll let you cross the river Styx together with Ukyo.

(CUTSCENE: Tesshu defeats Sakyo)

Tesshu: You've grown old, Sakyo.
Sakyo: You too...
Soon, this place will be wiped out...

[Tesshu is stabbed.]

Tesshu: That was a cheap shot...
               REALLY CHEAP!
               Sakyo...
I'm going to send along some attendants.

[Tesshu leaves as the village blows up.]

Tesshu: Heh heh, fireworks...Business is good!

[Half a year later...in Kamigata (present-day Kyoto)]

Rikimaru: This is...a needle.

Tesshu: "If we meet again I will show no mercy."

Rikimaru: Can't be...

Narrator: People have grudges that cannot be settled.
However, if one looks around, there are people who can settle
               those kinds of grudges.
               People call them "shimatsu-ya."
Theirs is a shady business of murder for hire.
However, nothing can be found that tells of the "shimatsu-ya"
in any of the literature left for future generations.

III.D. Special Missions (Rikimaru)

==============================
III.D.1 "Through the Portal"
==============================

Narrator: For this story, we will go back one year...
Rikimaru was believed to have defeated Mei-oh and died.
However, the instant before the Castle of Darkness collapsed,
Rikimaru jumped through the portal to the netherworld that had
been sealed by Mei-oh, thus narrowly escaping death. The green
light shining in the netherworld blinded Rikimaru, and Rikimaru
wandered on, not knowing where it would lead.
At last, when Rikimaru shot out through a narrow opening in the
netherworld, a world he had never seen before, with gigantic
stone buildings standing in a line, and iron boars(*1) going
back and forth, flew before his eyes.
Without even time to be puzzled by a sight he had never seen,
Rikimaru felt the loathsome presence of something evil calling
               him.
Taking an enemy sword that he obtained when he entered the
netherworld in hand, Rikimaru headed toward one of the stone
buildings, which seemed to be drawing him in...

Rikimaru: I feel sick. In a foreign land like this...what is doing this
               to me?

NOTES:
(*1) I know, I know. Iron "boars"? Strange, but that's how they're described
here. In fact, pretty much all of this is quite different from the scenario
described in the English version.

=====================
III.D.2 Demo Mission
=====================

(CUTSCENE: Rikimaru reaches the red house)

Guard: Villain!

(CUTSCENE: Rikimaru meets Tajima)

Tajima: After all our trouble, our party is ruined!
Rikimaru: Arguing is no use...I will kill you!
Tajima: Interesting...I'll make you regret those words...!
