MIKIRI SKILLS



Mikiri is the art of seeing through an enemy's attacks.
And with seeing through an attack of an enemy's, you learn that attack and
make it your own.

Mikiri is achieved by successfully avoiding an enemy's attacks.
Avoid is achieved by tapping the R1 button at the very instant when an
enemy's attack is just about to hit you.
If you successfully avoid a sword skill attack from an enemy which
corresponds to a learnable sword skill on your currently equipped sword,
there is a certain percentage chance that the sword skill will be
immediately learned, the percentage of which is determined by the current
experience point of the equipped sword.
There is a hidden experience meter for every sword, which is set at 0 the
moment you pick it up off the ground. For every small attack you perform (
$B""(J) the meter goes up by 1, and for every big attack you perform ($B"$(J) the
meter goes up by 8.

The percentage chance of new sword skills being learned is determined by the
experience point of the equipped sword. If the experience point of the
equipped sword is 0~7 then the mikiri percentage chance is 50%, if the
experience point of the equipped sword is 8~299 then the mikiri percentage
chance is 5%, and if the experience point of the equipped sword is 300 and
above then the mikiri percentage chance is 33%.
In other words, it is preferable that you try to learn mikiri skills with
either a completely unweilded sword or a sword that you've already used for
quite some time.

After seeing through an attack and adding that mikiri skill to a sword, you
will automatically avoid that attack from that moment on whenever an enemy
tries to attack you with it, as long as you have that sword equipped. Even
when the sword is sheathed, you will still automatically avoid the attack
even without tapping the R1 button.

There is a total of 161 mikiri skills to learn from the various enemies in
the game.
With every mikiri skill you learn, the "%" of mikiri skills learned shown at
the top right corner of the Mikiri Skill List ($B8+@Z$j5;I=(J) goes up. Your
goal, naturally, is to learn all the mikiri skills and accomplish "100%".



[Mikiri Hints & Tips]

- To mikiri (to avoid) enemy attacks accurately takes some practice, so
before you are used to the technique, just tap R1 repeatedly during battle,
that works pretty well most of the time.
- Continuously tapping is pretty tiring, so just tap when the enemy is
starting to attack you.

- Keep fighting different enemies to learn more mikiri skills, a single
enemy's mikiri skills is limited.
- Fight enemies with different sword stances, they possess different mikiri
skills.
- Boss characters possess more rare mikiri skills than random enemies, so
fight as many of them as you can. Check the Character Available Mikiri
Skills List at the end of this guide.

- It is entirely possible to reach 100% mikiri skills learned simply by
avoiding in battles, but because some mikiri skills just appear so rarely
for you to encounter a lot, you must also try to learn mikiri skills with
the help of Mikiri Technique Manual Scrolls dropped by downed enemies.
- Simply by avoiding in battles, you should be able to reach 50% without
much trouble, but after that you will notice your progress suddenly halted.
With patience, you should still be able to reach about 70% to 80% gradually,
but it is my opinion that trying to retrieve Mikiri Manual Scrolls might
prove slightly faster.


- Enemies activate different attacks depending on the distance and position
in relationship with you, and the movements you make. So try to figure out
the pattern for each character.

- When fighting boss characters, you are given the choice to speak to them.
Choose words to annoy them or to humiliate them and they will attack you
with more sophisticated sword skills.
- Enemies will be more annoyed when you speak to them humiliatingly right
after you have pushed back their attacks, thus causing them to activate even
stronger attacks. So when you see your enemy come at you with a small
attack, block it and push him back, then immediately say something
humiliating to them, this way he will more likely to attack you again with a
better sword skill.
- But beware, these better sword skills will be harder to avoid, or mikiri,
so be more careful.


- The main concern when learning mikiri skills by avoiding enemy attacks is
the loss of HP when your avoid fails and you are hit.
- It is recommended that before you try to learn mikiri skills, you build up
the HP adjustment and defense adjustment of the sword. Preferably around
+500 for HP and +30% for defense. Otherwise you might have a hard time
facing boss characters.

- Another method is to first shatter your enemy's sword.
- When the enemy's sword is shattered, their attack strength becomes
extremely low, so even if you are hit, you won't take a lot of damage.
- And with their sword shattered, you can still learn mikiri skills from
their attacks, so this is also a very convenient method.

- The way to do this is to first entice your enemy into a guard position
with small attacks. When the enemy is stubbornly guarding, attack him with
Break Sword Skills to break his sword, and continue and repeat until his
sword is gradually completely shattered.
- When facing boss characters, another way to break their swords is by
speaking humiliatingly to them, angering them into performing big sword
skill attacks, and you in response guard those attacks steadily. Some big
sword skill attacks, when guarded, cause a lot of stress to the sword to
perform, and sometimes with 2 or 3 repetitions the sword will shatter. So
this is also a convenient strategy.
- A good example would be the battle against $B9u@8E4?4(J at Day One, Night, at
the $B0lK\>>(J Single Pine. If you speak to him humiliatingly repeatedly,
chances are he will come at you with his big attack "$BI454Lk9T(J", which causes
a lot of stress to his sword when you block it. Just 2 steady blocks and his
sword will shatter.

- All the enemies' swords have a sword hardness of 4, regardless of
character or sword. So remember that you have to shatter them 4 times before
they are completely shattered.


- Avoiding and mikiri-ing isn't limited to just learning from your enemies,
you can learn mikiri skills this way from your allies as well.
- Plus, when you get hit by an attack from an ally, you don't receive
damage, so it's even better if you can get it.
- For example, during the first battle at Day One, Morning, under the
bridge, during the battle between $B%I%J%I%J(J and $BDZFbH,O:(J. If you successfully
avoid or mikiri attacks from $B%I%J%I%J(J, you will learn his mikiri skills, and
if you fail to avoid his attacks, you won't receive damage.
- Also during all the battles against the government soldiers, you can learn
mikiri skills from your allies and not receive damage when hit by them.
- The best time and place to learn mikiri skills this way is at Day Two,
Morning, at the $B@V6LE^4[(J Red Gang Office. There will be 4 Red Gang soldiers
training in the area in front of the main building, and if you train with
them, you won't receive damage at all when hit, and you can learn pretty
much all the basic mikiri skills from just the 4 of them.
Each of the 4 hold a different stanced sword, and thus you can learn a
variety of different mikiri skills from just the 4 of them.
But be careful, even though you won't receive damage, your sword still
suffers the same stress when hit, so make sure you don't tire your sword too
much, lest you might shatter it.



[Retrieving Mikiri Manual Scrolls]

1.
At Day Two, Morning, go to the $B9bO'(J Furnace and join with $B9u@8E4?4(J.
Advance wih the story until Day Two, Night, at the $B=I>l(J Resident Area.
This battle with $BF|8~H;?M(J and his ninja soldiers is a good time to retrieve
Mikiri Manual Scrolls.
As long as you don't kill $BF|8~H;?M(J, his ninja soldiers will keep appearing,
and because this is a later in the game battle, the chances of the enemies
dropping $B1|5A=q(J Manual Scrolls is slightly higher.

Mikiri Manual Scrolls will not always be dropped, but since other items
being dropped is also slightly more frequent in this later battle, this is
still a good place to build up your swords.
It is recommended that you kill enemies with attacks that deal out a good
deal of damage, this will increase the chances of the enemies dropping items
when they fall.

During 1 hour of killing, around 8 Mikiri Manual Scrolls could be dropped.

If you fight close to $BF|8~H;?M(J, the game will automatically target him for
you, which is an inconvenience in this case, so it is a good idea to battle
with some distance between you.
A good trick to use here is to gather up all the enemies inside the $B4E7*(J
Restaurant, and when $BF|8~H;?M(J is at a corner inside the building, quickly
run out with only ninja soldiers following you. And if you turn the corner,
chances are $BF|8~H;?M(J will be stuck at the inside of the restaurant, trying
to run toward you but instead is stuck running toward a corner of the room
unable to get out.
This trick won't work every time, so keep at it until he gets stuck.

As I mentioned before, as long as $BF|8~H;?M(J is left alive, his ninja soldiers
will keep appearing, but to leave him alive, it's not enough that you don't
kill him, you also have to prevent $BDZFbH,O:(J from killing him if $BDZFbH,O:(J is
still with you during that battle.
One way to prevent this is, during Day One, Night, at the $B=I>l(J Resident
Area, accept $B$9$:(J's plea for help, and inside the $B9u@820I_(J Kurofu Mansion
kill off $BDZFbH,O:(J.
Or during Day Two, Dusk, at the $BE4F;(J Railroad, wait until $BDZFbH,O:(J is killed
by the enemy before you move on.
If you weren't able to avoid $BDZFbH,O:(J's being with you at this battle
beforehand, you have to protect $BF|8~H;?M(J whenever he's being targeted by $BDZ(J
$BFbH,O:(J by standing in front of $BF|8~H;?M(J and guarding firmly against all of
$BDZFbH,O:(J's attacks, until $BDZFbH,O:(J switches his target to one of the other
ninjas in the area. And wait for him to get killed by one of the ninjas.

In addition to the time described above, other good times to retrieve Mikiri
Manual Scrolls are during Day One, Night, at the $B@V6LE^4[(J Red Gang Office,
and then after having defeated $B5HC{(J, during Day Two, Dusk, also at the $B@V6L(J
$BE^4[(J Red Gang Office.

The Red Gang soldiers here drops items quite frequently, which is why this
is a good place to build up your sword in general as well. Because even if
the item dropped isn't a Mikiri Manual Scroll, as long as it's a weapon
improvement item, it's good.
The soldiers also drop money sometimes, so it's also a good time and place
to accumulate money to achieve the $B6b;}$A;x(J Rich Samurai legend name, or to
gather more money to improve your weapon at the swordsmith's.
And as mentioned previously, it is recommended that you kill enemies with
attacks that deal out a good deal of damage, this will somewhat increase the
chances of the enemies dropping items when they fall.

In this area, only 3 Red Gang soldiers will appear at a time, and they will
come back to life each time you change the screen, so you can fight as much
as you like.
Also you can leave the area anytime during the battle, so you won't be in
real danger of being completely overpowered at any time. So when your HP is
dangerously low, just escape and find some replenishments.

During Day One, Night, it doesn't matter whether you have already joined the
Red Gang, the 3 Red Gang soldiers will be there for you no matter which side
you are on.
And if you are already on the Red Gang side, even though you killed your own
men, the story won't be affected, and events of the next day will still
remain the same as if this night never happened.
The only draw back of being on the Red Gang side and killing your own men is
the loss of honor, and subsequently receiving a less honorable legend name
at the end of the game.

During Day Two, Dusk, if you want to come here, you need to first at Day
Two, Morning, at the $B9bO'(J Furnace, join with $B9u@8E4?4(J, and at Day Two, Dusk,
defeat $B5HC{(J on top of the furnace, then you can come to the $B@V6LE^4[(J Red
Gang Office.
When you come here at this time, there will only be one Red Gang soldier
there still standing, at the brink of death, just a touch and he will fall.
With him will be 2 other Red Gang soldiers that had already fallen.
You can get items from this 1 dying soldier, and swords from the 2 that are
already down.
Waiting for items from only 1 enemy is somewhat ineffective, but since he is
already dying, this time and place is good if your HP is already low. At
least if you're not skilled at battle yet, you won't be in danger at all
here. Even though not as effective, this is nonetheless a very easy place to
build up your swords, and to collect Mikiri Manual Scrolls.
