    Getting Started:
    Please read
Perhaps one of the most appealing factors in any CONTRA game is the
boss waiting for you at the end of the level. And as a matter of fact:
The boss battles are easily the most appealing thing Shattered Soldier
has. Programmers did a splendid job.
Believe me, you will die a lot in this game, you will need to practice
A LOT and be very patient. My mission here is to tell you every
strategy you'll need to adopt with each boss, and which weapon or
    weapons to use.
Remember: you only have 3 weapons and 3 special attacks; to use any of
them just hold the O button for 3 seconds and release. I strongly
recommend you to change the control pattern for shooting your special
attack, replacing it with the square button and shoot normally with O.
Why? Because it's much more comfortable that way and there are levels
(like the second, for example) that will require a lot of special
    Good luck and enjoy
    Extra Lives
You will receive extra lives after you reach 20.000 points (But you can
obtain your first extra live with 15.000 points, just like the first
    default live).
    Default lives
Many people are confused about the Default Lives issue. You will
normally start with 3 in normal mode, and you will obtain your fourth
live after you've reached a score of 15.000. Your fifth default live is
waiting for you in the middle of the fourth level. (That's the way I
got them both). Remember, it is very important to save your
    Extra Goodies
Finishing Contra Shattered Soldier in normal difficulty will unlock
several new goodies for you to enjoy. Also finishing the game with good
ranks will open the door to new story wise elements and new levels.
A big downside in CSS is the lack of an in-game save option. You'll
have to start the level from the begging if you deplete your continues.
This is an old school game, and to tell you the truth: I almost had a
heart attack when I realized I couldn't save my progress (you can save
your rankings, which is very important) and as me, you'll get used to
it and enjoy the game to the point that you just won't care at all.
I took the liberty to name the Flamethrower's special shot:
"Flamethrower Bazooka". In my opinion, the flamethrower is the most
important weapon in the whole game. Why? Not only can it provide the
most powerful shots, but the flamethrower can save you of multiple
attacks (the alien wasps in the first level, the three light/balls
inside of the tunnel in the second, the first mini boss in the third
level, the third alien head who shots multiple white discs, the big
robot in the fourth level who likes to shot homing missiles, the brain
mini-boss also in the fourth level who shots multiple discs too).
So, when I talk about "Flamethrower Bazooka" you'll know what I'm
    talking about.
    Now let's rock...
    F A Q
    LOCATION: Kenya (Africa)
    - Start the level with the machine gun.
    - Be careful, there will be a guy shooting above a platform, kill him
    - Since you will never be out of ammo in the game, I recommend that you
don't stop shooting, there will be enemies everywhere.
GUY IN THE MOTORCICLE: Shots needed: 5
    Test your shooting speed.
    (Flamethrower Bazooka)
    - Bend over and shoot him with charged shots fast before he runs.
    - Use your machine gun again, shot the barrels, be careful with the
guys shooting at you. Also be careful with the guy in the platform
    after the second barrel.
    MINI BOSS: Mechanic Spider
    (Remember Super C?)
    (Flamethrower Bazooka)
    - Very easy: Get close to him and shoot as fast as possible. He will
    start firing missiles,
but if you're close enough, they won't even touch you.
    - His next movement will be a little walk towards you (be careful) then
he will jump to the other side of the screen. Remember: keep shooting
    at the bastard.
    - Remember Sonic 2? In the last battle, when the Egg of Death left the
screen and his sight aiming at you? This is exactly the same thing.
Just wait until his sight is almost red and jump to the right to avoid
    - Use the machine gun again; you will be attacked from behind.
See those BIG things in the roof? Shoot at them, believe me, it's gonna
    be fun.
DEAD END: jump to the wall and star climbing; use your machine gun,
careful with the three guys in the platforms.
    MINI BOSS: Mechanic Bulb
The White House has at least two of these.
Shots needed for the bulb: 10
Shots needed for each cannon: 3.
    (Flamethrower Bazooka)
    Cannon transformations:
    a) Homing missiles
    b) Machine gun
    c) Nepal bombs
    d) Flamethrower
    Strategy 1:
-If you want to kill this big machine fast, just shot at the bulb in
the middle of the two homing missile cannons. But you won't obtain a
    good rank.
    Strategy 2:
    - Stay in the left side of the screen to destroy the right cannon, you
can destroy the homing missiles coming from the cannon above you with
    the flamethrower.
    - Don't panic, the homing missiles are slow and easy to avoid, first
    destroy the right
cannon. Then it will change to a machine gun... but the shots won't hit
you if you're safe (as I told you) in the other side of the screen.
After another three shots, you'll need to be VERY careful with his
napalm attacks: Jump each time the fire is close, easy to avoid, but
    (it) can be tricky.
The next transformation will be a joke: the flamethrower won't even
reach you from the position you're in. Three more shots and it's done.
    - Now go to the opposite side of the screen and repeat the tactic with
    the other cannon.
CAREFUL: the Bulb will start shooting a horizontal line of electricity.
But it won't even touch you if you're stick to the right side.
Now you'll have to walk straight (use the machine gun).
    *special enemy tips*
    - These cowards can't be killed while holding their barriers, if you
    don't want to wait
until they decide to shoot, you can use the special machine gun attack,
    jump and release
one of the spiral shots, this will reach his head.-
How fun, change your gun for the flamethrower.
    - See those guys flying? They will be easily destroyed with the
    flamethrower bazooka.
    MINI BOSS: Snow Worm
I would like to have one of these in my backyard.
ADVICE: Be quick, if you're not fast enough he will leave, and you sure
    want to have
    a good rank, right?
    - Use the machine gun, be patient, you won't reach this big guy easily,
    so you need to be
fast and wait until he's really close to you. Wait in any of the two
    opposite sides of the
screen, don't let him scare you: he can't reach you there.
    - The trick is to charge the machine gun special spiral attack, and
    wait until he's close
    enough, it won't miss.
    - Now that he's taken enough damage, he will start jumping straight
above you... change your gun for the flamethrower, and shot charged
    shots at his mouth.
    Special enemy tactic
    - These guys want to take you over for strange purposes... since we
don't really want to find out what they plan to do with you (you will
be dead if they leave the screen with your character) you can easily
kill them using the flamethrower. Advance as fast as possible, they
won't stop coming. If one of them grabs you, just press UP in the
directional button and burn him down.
    BOSS 1 T U R T L E B O S S / S I C K A L I E N
    A blast from the past
    * Stage I *
    -	Change your weapon to Walking Grenades, kneel down and shoot at
his "heart" (Remember Alien Wars? It's under his head, in the
chest) that's the first part you have to destroy.
    -	When his heart explodes, change your weapon: The Flamethrower
will be very useful. Stand behind his head, and shoot
    -	When he makes a strange noise (he's hurt and mad) that means his
head will emerge and it's going to bite you. Don't worry from
where you are he can't hurt you: bend over the floor and wait for
his head to return to it's place and Repeat the process.
    -	When his head explodes, quickly go to the platform.
    *Stage II*
    *-SHOTS NEEDED-*: 12
    (Flamethrower Bazooka)
    -	Change your weapon to the machine gun.
    -	His weak point is his opened mouth.
    -	Destroy any kind of parasites that emerge from his nose...
    -	Jump to the platform when he throws the blue radioactive living
    -	When he starts vomiting a cascade of green radioactive waste
you'll have to walk closer to his mouth: don't worry, the cascade
won't hurt you, and as I said: walk CLOSER, and don't stop
shooting, (change weapons again: Flamethrower Bazooka) since he's
mouth is all open, that's the best moment to hurt him. Bend over
when you see the vomit coming near you. Ok?
    -	After that repeat the processes.
LOCATION: Turkistan (In front of the Caspian Sea)
This level is the dream of every mechanical engineer.
    - See the blue submarine? From where it is, it can attack you in two
    different ways:
    a) Bombs.
How to avoid them: stay attached to the opposite side of the screen
(left side in this case) jump when the bombs are falling.
    Repeat again.
    b) The sweeping laser.
How to avoid it: Stay in the middle of the screen, jump when the laser
    is dashing towards your motorcycle.
Now the submarine is RIGHT BEHIND YOU... don't panic: the only thing it
can do is to shoot with his two cannons (jump to avoid)
    - Shot the cannons with your flamethrower bazooka, it will take three
    shots to destroy them.
Now the blue submarine turned into a flying machine...
    - Shot the ramp with the flamethrower bazooka until it's destroyed. You
will also hit those dangerous barrels.
    Special enemy tactic
See the bizarre kamikaze riding a missile? You can easily kill him with
one shoot from the bazooka. Be careful with these guys.
    - Now you have to take care of the cannons attached to the ship: The
flamethrower bazooka can destroy them with only two shoots. Be very
careful... (See the strange vertical line after and before the cannon
shot? It can also hurt you).
    - Now you have to destroy another kamikaze.
    - Now, to destroy for once and for all these machines from hell, you'll
need to destroy its main cannon: of course, it will also shoot back at
you. Jump every time the bazooka-like shoot hits the floor: because it
will sweep the whole screen. These cannon will take only three shots to
    be destroyed.
    - Now, charge the flamethrower bazooka and kill the other kamikazes
before they drop bombs. They will need two shoots to be destroyed.
You got to be quick here, ok?
A big tank-like cannon shoots at you... but those aren't normal
shoots... its worse, its much, much worse.
    - The shoots are actually 3 light balls, homing light balls to be more
precise, and guess what: they are after you.
    - DON'T PANIC, destroy them with your flamethrower, be quick.
    - The cannon will shoot six times.
    - Now you'll have to chance to shoot down the cannon (a sight will help
you know where to shoot) two flamethrower bazooka shots will be more
than enough to make it blow.
    - Motorized foes! They shoot at you. And you'll have to deal with 5 of
    these guys.
    - As the Kamikazes, you can get rid of any of them with two
    flamethrower bazooka shoots.
    - Another super machine: The main flying robot is in the middle one
(you can't shoot it) Its left and right arms are special weapons: The
one with the blue light is a powerful machine gun, and the other (with
the red light) is a bazooka. Groovy
If you want to have more points, then you better be quick destroying
    - Use your flamethrower bazooka, destroy the machine gun first (around
3 (shots) will be more than enough).
    - Yes, you guessed right: now destroy the bazooka.
Remember the main flying robot in the middle. Now he's after you, he
has an optional attack: a rain of bombs, no tactic here, just calm down
and be as quick as possible, focus on your directional pad, not your
Be aware of something: you can't shoot him, not yet.
    - If he decides to do the infamous bomb rain, his second attack will be
a sweeping slow-reaction laser. Cool, uh?
If this laser reaches you, then you should turn off your console,'cause
you are obviously falling asleep. Seriously: it's very easy to avoid.
    - Ok, now the robot will start flying towards you... towards Bill? No,
not towards your player: TOWARDS YOU. And will appear again attacking
with a constant blue laser. Shoot at him QUICK! One flamethrower
bazooka shoot will be enough to destroy it for once and for all.
Bill decided to destroy the motorcycle in a not so delicate way. Now
you're above the train. Use your flamethrower.
Cannons shoot time-bombs, so be very careful and watch the colors,
because then they turn red, that mean they are going to explode at any
-if you stick to the opposite (left) side of the screen, they won't
touch you, but you won't reach the cannons with your bazooka (even when
you can see a piece of them)
I will list two tactics to destroy the cannons without being hurt, if
you're experienced, you will accomplish your objective in this stage of
    the level, without any problem.
You will need to take down 3 of these cannons.
-After the last bomb explode(s), jump towards the cannon and quickly
shoot (one flamethrower bazooka shoot will be enough to destroy any of
them) the bomb won't reach your character.
-Try to be as close as possible, so you can see a bigger piece of the
cannon in the right side of the screen: if you stick to the opposite
side, the bombs won't reach you. You can shoot at them without being
-This cannon is bigger than the others and looks like one of those
super machine gun soldiers they use against airplanes: he can shoot a
powerful bazooka shot, but as the first type of cannons (those who
throw time-bombs) they can be destroyed with a single flamethrower
bazooka shoot. You will need to take down two of them.
    - See those guys with mortars? Don't approach them, use the walking
grenades (or homing missiles if you like).
    BOSS 2 S U P E R M E C H A
    Mazinger Z at his best
Don't let him scare you, this boss is easy, but you gotta be careful.
    *Stage I*
    *-SHOTS NEEDED-*: 4 each
    (Flamethrower Bazooka)
    -	He's running alongside the boxcar you're in. Have the
Flamethrower with the special bazooka attack ready. The premise
here is to destroy both of his shoulders, don't waste time and
attack as much as you can.
    -	Be VERY careful with his attacks, which are two: A shoulder blow
(tries to derail the boxcar, jump to avoid damage) and he will
shoot his arm at you... jump quickly, wait a few seconds then jump
again (the arm return the way it was shot).
    *Stage II*
    Can robots be mad?
    ^-SHOTS NEEDED-^: 4
    (Homing Missiles)
    -	Oh-oh, he's in front of you now. After he lifts the entire
boxcar, he will start shooting some air missiles. But since the
game will warn you where they will fall (light spots in the
    ground) you'll have zero problems.
    -	Change your weapon to the walking grenades; you will need the
    special "homing missiles" attack.
    -	Come close to the edge of the boxcar and shoot the homing
missiles, they'll fallow the target. Repeat the operation 4
    times. Be very careful.
    *Stage III*
    He won't quit...
    *-SHOTS NEEDED-*: 6
    (Flamethrower Bazooka)
    -	Surprise: he's now in the top of the boxcar with you. Stay
    exactly in the opposite side.
    -	Change your weapon: you will need the Flamethrower bazooka-like
    shots again.
    -	He's releasing some boomerang-like sharp ground wheels. Easy to
avoid: Jump as much as you can, then shoot.
    -	When he starts flying bend over until he lands again.
    -	Golden chance: shoot at his back. 5 or 6 shoots will be more than
    *Stage IV*
Not even Freddy Krueger is this annoying...
    -*SHOTS NEEDED*-: 3
    (Flamethrower Bazooka)
    -	Not a real stage. But now his legs are walking towards you (he's
    causing problems even after dying)
    -	Shoot at the hips.
    -	If you don't have time to destroy them, just bend over. It's over
    Location: New York (USA)
Start the level using the machine gun, you'll see two dogs attacking
one of your enemies (man's best friend after all) be VERY careful with
a guy above a truck: he can shoot your character without even being
    noticed, jump to kill him.
    Special enemy tactic
The Chopper Bombers are very annoying: Guys holding helixes. They
appear twice in this level, they will try to drop bombs at you, and
they require a lot of machine gun shoots to take down. You can kill
them with one shot from your flamethrower bazooka, but it's very
dangerous since this weapon is slow and enemies are constantly
appearing from both sides of the screen.
The best tactic I can give you is not to stay under them (since they
like to drop bombs) and shoot with the directional pad.
    - You'll see a guy with a mortar being protected by a pile of sacks.
Don't bother waiting until he gets up to charge his weapon: Bend over
and use the flamethrower bazooka, nothing will protect him.
    Stay with the flamethrower...
    He's back for revenge
    (Flamethrower bazooka)
This boss is the main reason why many people hate this level. Why?
Because they don't know how to stay alive and avoid his constant bombs.
Here is the tactic to kill this hellish machine in a few seconds
    without being killed even once:
    - See the red light that opens when the Beetle Borg is just levitating
and not flying? Shoot at it with your flamethrower bazooka. And be
very, VERY careful (if you're a newbie at Contra you better shoot just
once) because as in Contra III: it will start dropping enemies (two).
Burn them down, but I insist: be careful, you don't want one of these
guys to land in your head or something else.
    -	Now, she will position her self in one of the two extremes of the
screen, with a big reflector light aiming at the floor: GO
STRAIGHT TO THE LIGHT and stay in there with your flamethrower up
and holding the normal shoot button. You will burn each one of
    the (pile) of bombs
    -	See? The Beetle normally looks at you with the reflector light,
and there is where he will drop the bombs. If you run, you're
dead. Stay in the light with the flamethrower aiming up.
    -	Now she will stay in the middle of the screen (you can shoot
twice now) and, of course, she will drop two enemies. Again: burn
    them down.
    -	Repeat the strategy until he's dead.
    Special enemy tactic
Two of these guys will appear right before you kill the (Beetle) Borg,
and the best way to kill them is with the flamethrower bazooka (just
one shoot), shooting while bending down. Believe me: it will take too
much time to kill them with any other weapon.
When you kill the first, charge the flamethrower bazooka and walk, the
second will be waiting for you stacked to the roof: release the button
and charge again. A third enemy is waiting for you right after the last
one, be careful with this one because it's not easy to destroy (you'll
know why) use your directional button.
I'm sure my grandma has one of these hiding in her garage
    (Flamethrower Bazooka)
Don't ask me why I named this enemy Alien Cow. As you see, she is stuck
to the roof. And yes: this mini boss actually requires more shoots than
almost any other formal Boss in the game.
    - Avoid his ping-pong like yellow balls, I strongly recommend you to be
close to her, so you won't have to deal with two of these balls.
    - This enemy needs a lot of practice, shoot as fast as possible.
    - Now she is walking to the opposite side of the screen: Meanwhile,
you should shoot as fast as possible.
    - Now she will start dropping sticky alien-eggs the size of a
Volkswagen... perhaps not so big, but they are lethal, and you'll need
to be very, very precise. Use the diagonal stick, or the directional
pad, whatever you feel more comfortable.
When she starts bleeding green blood (and making strange sounds,
probably cursing at you) that means she is going to die.
By the way, are you behind her? GET THE HELL OUT OF THERE, BOY! She
    will fall at any second.
Don't even think on going up to the place the Alien Cow was before she
    decided to move.
Why? Because if you do this, she will RUN at 850 miles per hour
straight at you, and you know what will happen. You will scream in
anguish and you'll have to turn off your console, believe me, it's
very, very disturbing. The first time she did this to me I almost had a
    heart attack,
I was laughing hysterically for one hour. It was so unexpected...
Now jump to the place I just told you not to go and continue.
He got tired of Winona Ryder and decided to join Contra to fight Bill.
    (Flamethrower Bazooka)
    - Immediately jump to the pipe which is just above the Alien.
You can do two things here: burn him holding the directional pad down
and holding the normal fire button, or shoot him to dead with the
    flamethrower bazooka. It's the same.
    - To successfully kill this boss without being hurt, you'll need to
know his two special attacks and what to do in each case:
Attack One: Alien vomits little white orbs.
What to do: Jump back to the opposite side of the screen, use the
normal flamethrower to destroy these things (which are, of course, all
following you). Return to where you were.
Attack Two: Alien vomits towards the first pipe. I hope you are now
just in the place I told you to stay, because that's the only safe
place if this foe does this. Don't waste your time, soldier: SHOOT and
try to kill him as fast as possible.
After the Alien, charge your flamethrower again: two Cannon Borgs will
    be waiting for you.
    - The first one will appear just behind you in a platform.
    - The second will be waiting upstairs.
    BOSS 3 L O N G K A M P F W A G E N
    A tank from hell
    *Stage I*
    (Both Flamethrower Bazooka)
    -	The flamethrower special attack is your salvation.
    -	Your first premise is to destroy the lower cannon (shot while
bending over you will need 10 shots to make it blow.
    -	Now take care of the upper (big) cannon. It's easy, be careful
when it shots (it will worn you, it's gonna be surrounded with
blue sparks before it shoots) you will need 14 shots.
    -	REMEMBER: Many people die because they didn't know they could
"descend" from the platforms (just hit "down" on the directional
    pad and X button).
    *Stage II*
    (Flamethrower Bazooka)
    Be careful
    -	Ok. After you destroyed both cannons (now you can see the back of
the tank and how long it is) you will realize that in order to
survive you'll need to jump and stick on the roof.
    -	See those Midgar-reactors like cannons? Never stay above them,
destroy them quickly: they'll need at least 4 shots each.
    -	Be careful with the missiles that appear on each side of the
screen: they can be easily destroyed with the Flamethrower.
    *Stage III*
    *-SHOTS NEEDED*-: 14
    (Flamethrower Bazooka)
    Be strong...
    -	Ok, now YOU are chasing the tank. The closer the better. Why?
Because you can freely shoot when that red ball appears without
worrying to fall inside the infamous "floor-gut-traps". Remember:
    stay CLOSE.
    -	QUICKLY bend over after you shoot the red ball, a giant laser
    will be shot.
    -	Remember the Mecha's sharp wheels? They're back, and this time
they can jump. Solution? DON'T try to jump above them. Stay on
the floor and you'll automatically know how to avoid those.
    -	When the red ball is hurt, she will start shooting robots instead
of wheels. Destroy those with the Flamethrower's bazooka. (Much
    easier than the wheels).
    -	After 10 shots, this boss will be more than destroyed.
    Location: Japan seas, (near Honshu)
    PART I
    -	So much fun: you're in a missile now, just like in the old Alien
Wars. Your mission here is to destroy as quickly as possible the
other missiles (not only because they can kill you, but because
that will increase your HIT RATE).
    -	There are 18 missiles to destroy. Watch your HIT RATE square to
be sure you destroyed all of them.
Many people find this guy much harder than any of the first four level
bosses. And I understand them, you need to destroy this giant piece of
junk piece by piece, don't worry, if you follow these tactics (with a
little practice) you will kill him without losing a single live.
    (Flamethrower Bazooka)
    -	If you're quick enough you can shoot 5 times before you have to
go up so you can avoid the water mines the backpack lefts.
    -	Now you see a pack of missiles coming near you, right? Here's a
little trick to destroy all of them without being hit: use your
machine gun, and press SQUARE button and X button at the same
time until all missiles are destroyed. Or O button and X button
if you changed your control settings as I told you to do in this
This is one of the first things I wrote in the guide, but perhaps
you're one of those guys or girls who jump the explanations and start
    reading the FAQ itself, right?
Well, if you want to use a much more comfortable way to shoot charged
shoots, go back and read the "Please Read" section.
    -	Now you're in the opposite side of the screen, and the robot is
shooting big fireballs at you and at same time (because he
really, really wants to kill you badly) the little cannon above
his head is shooting missiles. Use the same tactic as before:
SQUARE and X at the same time and avoid the shots. This way you
will destroy all missiles coming out of the top of his head
    -	Now the mechanical boat he's riding is firing missiles too, you
can use the flamethrower to get rid of them.
    -	The second time you have the chance to shoot at his backpack
you'll have more than enough time to destroy it. Things are much
    easier now.
The flamethrower bazooka is such a powerful weapon that even shooting
from behind the robot, the shoots can damage his pistol. Remember this
    and don't waste time.
    (Flamethrower Bazooka)
    -	Remember what I told you? (The best opportunity you'll have to
destroy his pistol will be your constant shooting from behind the
robot. The pistol will also take damage when you avoid the
missiles, if you're using my tactic, then the machine gun (shots)
will also contribute to destroy this hellish gun.
    (Flamethrower Bazooka)
    -	The main threat of this mechanical boat is its missiles. Be very
careful and burn them down with your flamethrower, be as quick as
possible. Shoot every chance you can and always, ALWAYS get rid
of his missiles first, and then shoot it.
    (Flamethrower Bazooka)
    -	Very, very easy. All you need to do to is avoid the laser coming
out of the robot's head (you can take advantage and shoot the
cannon from this position seating down).
    -	At this point, the robot will use a long super-duper-mega
electric chain to kill Bill. But it's a joke: All you need to do
to is to avoid it by staying in the right side of the screen.
    -	You know how to destroy his missiles: SQUARE + X and machine gun.
    Now you're inside the Seabed.
Very scary... and very easy compared to what you just did to reach this
The most important weapon inside the Seabed is not the flamethrower
anymore; it's the Walking Grenade gun special charge attack: homing
missiles. Charge this weapon as fast as you can and DON'T STOP SHOOTING
while you're descending with the chopper helixes, ok? Don't even
    breathe: just keep shooting.
    Special enemy tactic
Another star from Alien movies moved to Contra series. They are small,
quick, and very dangerous. But fortunately they are also very weak.
Remember what I just told you? Don't stop shooting your homing missile
weapon. And these guys won't give you ANY problem(s).
    Special enemy tactic
These guys are weak, but you gotta be careful: you can destroy them
with three shoots from the homing missiles weapon, or if you prefer to
kill them quickly use two flamethrower bazooka shoots.
    Special enemy tactic
You sure don't want to have a couple of these with bacon for breakfast.
These alien eggs like to spawn the alien spiders, and you'll need two
homing missile shoots to get rid of a single egg. As I told you: be
SHOOTS NEEDED TO KILL HIM: None, your normal flamethrower is required
    -	One of the easiest mini bosses in the game (if not the easiest).
Just burn him (and chase him) down with your flamethrower, don't
    let him breath.
    -	See the white discs he expelled? They can be easily burned.
    -	Blue and read lasers... they are lethal if touched while on the
floor, but you can jump between them without being damaged. Hah
    -	Repeat the tactic.
    BRAIN (II)
    (Flamethrower Bazooka)
This game won't be a true Contra game without at least an enemy brain
    on it.
    -	He's trying to give you an acid brain shower. So don't stop
walking, it's very easy to avoid... the puddles left by the last
drops of his acid shower won't hurt you.
    -	Looks like he can't hold more liquid and decided to release it in
a single jet. When he does this you can shoot at least 5 times.
Ok, now change your weapon for the walking grenades again.
    -	More alien eggs, destroy them with your walking grenades
    -	Destroy the eggs you can't reach using your homing missiles,
    quick, fast, don't stop.
    -	Another Alien Carnivorous Plant... kill her with your flamethrower
    -	More eggs, you know what to do.
Now you're above one of the three floating platforms. And you just saw
the Boss of this level trying to brake the glass (very much in the same
way a giant shark did a movie called Deep Blue Sea. (Thanks to Mr.
    Shishio for this).
    -	Flying mines will soon start falling, you have to destroy 15 of
them (once again, use your Homing Missile weapons.
    -	I don't think I really need to remind you to be quick, my friend.
Be very quick and charge the weapon as soon as you can. Don't
stop shooting until you've destroyed all of them. Because if they
reach the water, they will shatter in small white pieces that can
    hurt you.
    BOSS 4 A L I E N F I S H
A big special guess from Seaman
    Remember Seaman from Sega Dreamcast?
Don't let his appearance scare you, he's not hard at all.
    (Flamethrower bazooka)
    -	You will need to study these points before fighting this boss.
Why? Because your mission here is to survive... the Alien Fish will
need only 10 Flamethrower bazooka-like shots in his mouth to be
dead. I will list his attack patterns, and what you have to do in
every one of them. Good luck
    -	First, use the homing missiles to avoid the chopper-grenades
while you're ascending in the beginning of the battle (when the
Alien Fish tries to break the glass).
    -	When the fight against the Alien Fish itself starts, he's first
attack will be a big jump above the scenery, quickly charge a
Flamethrower shot and open fire to his open mouth.
    -	Now he's down in the water (where you can't hit him)... you have to
wait patiently, and when you sight some bubbles under you,
QUICKLY jump to the other platform, he's gonna jump! When the
fish submerges again, jump to the platform he just tried to
destroy... he won't appear there again.
    -	Now this is your golden moment: His head will appear in the right
or the left side of the screen, then the platforms will start
moving towards his mouth (you have to jump between them) bend
over in his direction and shoot the bazooka-like shots from the
flamethrower. Don't be scared when the platforms move faster... be
    -	Now you will se how the Alien Fish emerges (with a platform in
his head) jump on the platform, then jump again to roof pipes.
(Don't stay on the platform for to much or you're fish meat,
you'll know why). Now jump back to the water platforms as fast as
you can, he will repeat his first move again.
    -	Repeat the operation... he will be dead in no time.
    Location: Galuga Archipielago doesn't exist
So you're finally here. Congratulations, soldier.
    -	Start using your machine gun to get rid of the guys coming from
    both sides. Be fast.
    -	Be VERY careful with a guy above a truck; destroy the truck as
    fast as you can.
    -	Be VERY careful with the snipers, don't walk too fast, and don't
thrust what you can't see. Use your homing missile to get rid of
This van has the best anti-theft "system" in the world.
Very, very easy, if you know what to do.
-*SHOTS NEEDED TO KILL HIM-*: Not applicable.
    -	Use your flamethrower.
The snail can do two attacks:
    The Missile Attack
How to avoid it: Wait until the Snail hides under the truck and then
jump above the vehicle before the missiles sweeps the whole scenario.
    Slime bubble Attack
How to avoid it: Burn with your flamethrower all bubbles. Be careful.
    -	Again, be very careful with the snipers when you have to climb
the rock, use your homing missiles.
This part has caused many problems for players, here's an easy tactic:
    - Every time you approach any of the helixes, an alien spider will
appear: don't worry, the spider won't jump, neither will (it) try to
hurt you. Just jump and shoot downward (if you want to kill that poor
    God creature).
    -	Don't ever use your flamethrower bazooka or your homing missiles
to move the helixes: use your machine gun.
    -	Wait until the helix is rotating slow enough to let you pass
    without problems.
    -	When you are among the last and second last helix (both are very
close to you) just find the exact middle point between the two of
them and kill the next Alien spider. Shoot at the last helix,
wait until it moves slowly and walk.
Typical: soldiers are jumping from an airplane hoist and they won't
stop coming until you're dead. What to do? Use your homing missile gun
    and move.
    Contra's deepest folklore
    (Walking grenades)
    -	Go up to the platform; use your homing missile weapon to kill the
three snipers that will come out of the top of the wall.
    -	See the enemy soldiers behind you? Don't worry about them; they
will be ridiculously killed by the same machine. Use your walking
grenade, from different tactical positions you will hit both
    cannons and there red reactors.
    Time for a decisive battle...
    BOSS 5 L A N C E
Lance bad friend, very very bad friend
Lance is not hard at all, but you need to know what you're doing in
this battle (and anticipate his attacks)
    (Flamethrower Bazooka)
    -	I'm gonna tell you what you need to do according to Lance's
    a)	When he's floating in one side of the screen with red fireballs
surrounding him, be careful: he's gonna shoot them at you. Calm
down, wait until you see the shots to avoid being attacked.
    b)	Lance stays in the middle of the screen: star-like attack in six
directions. Don't worry, it's pretty slow, all you have to do is
"walk" with the beams coming out of his body, you can take
advantage and shot him to oblivion.
    c)	Fetal position... lance will turn into a fireball and bounce... this
will give you some troubles since the walls in the arena are
"sticky" and what you really need to do here is to stay calm and
run when necessary. Never lose your cool: don't start running,
you're making it easier for him if you do so.
    d)	Lance shoots over 5 static lightballs. Very stupid: just avoid
them, they won't even move, take advantage and shot at him.
    e)	Now he's gonna kick a sharp lightball sweeping the floor (and the
roof). The easiest way to avoid this attack is jumping behind
Lance (no, I'm not joking, the guy won't even turn).
This boss needs practice and patience. Stay calm and anticipate his
moves. He will go down in no time.
    BOSS 6 H E A R T
    Very sweet
One of the easiest bosses in the game
    (Flamethrower Bazooka)
    -	Ok, first of all, get rid of the four eggs in each wall of this
little screen, use the flamethrower bazooka they will go down in
no time. Clean each side. Easy
    -	Now, with the single flamethrower, burn da' heart. It won't hurt
    you, be QUICK.
    -	Also, burn the little spiders coming out of the roof. Very easy.
    BOSS 7 T H E W O R M
The Snake from Nokia's cell phone games has found a new job
The hardest boss in the game by far.
No, not really, the worm is pretty easy, but if you're not quick
enough, he can kill you. Remember the cell phone game "Snake"? Well, he
is the snake, and you're the dot! (Only that this time the dot can
    shoot at the snake, heh).
    (Flamethrower Bazooka)
    -	Shot at his head, quick, QUICK. Don't worry, you can jump above
the worm, you won't die. But I insist: kill him quick, shot as
    fast as you can.
    BOSS 8 S I S T E R T W I N S
Meet both daughters of that boss from Super C and Alien Wars
    Easy boss.
*-SHOTS NEEDED TO KILL THEM*-: 10 (the first you kill) 20 (the second)
    (Flamethrower Bazooka)
    -	I killed this boss in my first attempt. It's very easy: one of
them will try to run over you (jump...duh) while the other is
    waiting on the roof.
    -	The trick to beat this boss is to anticipate his attacks. Easy
things since they are very predictable.
ADVICE: Pick any one of them (preferably the first one that tried to
run over Bill) and kill her first. Now you have to fight with one left.
    -	Be careful when they (or she) submerge on the floor... you'll see
    where they will emerge again.
    -	One of then will shot little, but brilliant lightballs to the
roof, so they will start falling all over you. Very easy to
    BOSS 9 A L I E N P L A N T
    Strangely gross
If you can anticipate her attacks, she will easily go down in no time.
    (Flamethrower Bazooka)
    -	See her red ball-shaped heart? Each time the plant "opens" she
will reveal it. That's your target soldier. Shoot fast
    -	Ok now, here's a list of what you HAVE to do in each situation:
    A)	When the roof of the battle-scenario descends (because our
unfriendly plant is pulling it down): Jump and stick to the roof,
because the boss will shoot a Nepal-like attack that will burn
    the whole floor.
    B)	The plant opens and begins to shoot a Cyclops-like mega attack:
(like in one of those Marvel Vs Capcom games) bend over quick.
    C)	The plant is running at me!: Does this need an explanation? JUMP!
    BOSS 10 R E D F A L C O N
    This champion never quits...
Even if he is big, scary, and very powerful, Red Falcon is not hard at
all. You gotta be quick and you gotta move fast. See the big red spot
in his forehead? That's your main goal. If you want to kill him fast
shoot at the forehead, if you want to have a good ranking then you'll
have to destroy his snake-arms and his two eyes. Ouch.
Of course, if you want to kill Red Falcon piece by piece, you should
expect him to become harder and harder. Good luck.
*-SHOTS NEEDED TO KILL THEM*-: Above 30 (the whole boss)
    (Flamethrower Bazooka)
    -	The first thing you have to do is to destroy the snake-arm from
the right. When it's destroyed, you can freely climb above the
    snake on the left.
    -	The left arm represents no problem at all: his only attack is to
coil around the rope. Be careful.
    -	Red Falcon will shot powerful flamethrower-bazooka like shots.
Jump to avoid them, don't worry, you won't fall.
    -	Use the diagonal stick to shot at his eyes. Since he is very big,
    this won't be a problem.
    -	Be very careful when the right hole starts vomiting some strange
things that can kill you... I'm pretty sure you don't want to know
    what that is.
    -	Another special attack: Red Falcon can shoot a constant blue
laser that will just stay for a while: avoid it.
    -	If you destroy both arms, Red Falcon will start shooting around
six bazooka shots in diagonal directions. I hope you've trained
enough on avoiding missiles around the game.
    Congratulations, you destroyed Red Falcon.
    L A S T W O R D S
Is this the end? No, you still have two more levels to complete; you
can unlock them if you have an overall A rank (Or S rank) in normal
mode. But for this FAQ, yes, it is the end... I say goodbye and wish you
luck on destroying the next bosses.
Where's the fun if you use a guide? C'mon soldier, at this point, you
can do it by yourself... the bosses left in the game are very, very easy
(the silver guy in the sixth level, for example, is a joke, and the
infamous Amoeba boss transformation is easy once you learn how to avoid
    his attacks)
This game is all about tactics: Contra Shattered Soldier is wonderful
because it isn't just a mindless action game: you have to use some
brains to figure out your own strategies and tactics.
With enough practice and patience, you'll be 'da master of Shattered
Good luck and thank you very much for your attention.
    - One of the best ways I found to gain more lives (normal lives, not
default lives) in Shattered Soldier is completing LEVEL 2 several
times. This level is by far the best, because it gives you more points
than any other (a lot of stuff to blow up) if you mastered level 2,
then this is a great chance to gain more lives, if you haven't, then I
recommend you to start mastering it. How? Training soldier, training.
