"Take a riveting plunge into one mans nightmare.....can you survive?"
Many of you out there might be wondering if Silent Hill 2: Greatest Hits lives up to its predecessor Silent Hill? Well the answer is yes! This is an unbelievable game and in my opinion puts the original to shame. It also includes a new sub-scenario where you play as Maria in a whole new story, as well as new sounds, lighting, weapons, items, and camera angles. There are those few skeptics out there who may disagree, well see for yourself…
One of Silent Hill 2: Greatest Hits high points is its utterly beautiful atmosphere and graphics. You’ll notice from the beginning of this game that the graphics couldn’t possibly get any better and they surpass many other PS2 games. However this is just the tip of the iceberg…the FMV sequences triple in beauty. They are clean, crisp, and show every detail of the surrounding environment. From the foggy streets, the dark, damp, rotting areas of the indoor environments, to the facial characteristics and the disgusting attributes of the creatures, the graphics will blow you away.
James is relatively easy to control, basically its self-explanatory, may take a matter of minutes to familiarize yourself with the controls. There is however one downside, it may take a while to be comfortable with killing monsters, it’s a bit tricky at first, but practice makes perfect! Other than this, the controls are extremely simple and fun.
The sound is a huge step up for any PS to PS2 game. Its uses a method called “S-force”, a new state-of-the-art 3-D sound system. This gives a full 3-D surround sound experience through the regular two channel output on your television. Silent Hill 2: Greatest Hits brings every little sound to life in an unbelievable way, by making every sound the center of attention. Within the first minutes of the game, you will notice that the sound has an extremely huge impact on the level of fear you will experience during this game.
3 years ago James Sunderland’s wife Mary died of an incurable disease. He has just received a letter in the mail from Mary beckoning him to return to Silent Hill because she is “waiting” for him in their “special place”. The cast of characters even further enhances the mystery and wonder into the truth behind James and his wife. This is without a doubt the best story line to any survival horror genre game. It will take you on a roller coaster ride that you’ll never forget.
Replay Value: 8/10
This game has many extra features as well as easter eggs you can experience during replay. For instance, there are hidden weapons, hidden items, and above all there are 5 alternate endings that can be awarded. With first completion you can get tons of extra options that make a big difference during the gameplay.
Fear Factor: 10/10
This is truly the most darkest and disturbing game out today, nothing hails in comparison to the utter horror and fear Silent Hill 2 strikes into the heart of the player. One moment, calm silence, the next you are being launched out of your seat by an unsuspected noise or discovery. This game is addicting due to the fear you will experience during the game, the creators couldn’t have made it any better.
Even for those who may not find the survival horror genre for them, this is a must play. This is a truly scary yet fun experience for anyone who does however have the patience.
