IV. Introduction

The 3D strategy role-playing game / dating simulation 
hybrid "Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love" is a sequel to 
the action RPG "Sakura Taisen V: Episode 0," which 
chronicled the adventures of Texan cowgirl Gemini 
Sunrise as she traversed the American mainland to 
fulfill the last wish of her mentor.  Arriving in New 
York in this sequel, Gemini meets Shinjiro Taiga, 
nephew of Japanese Imperial Navy hero Ogami Ichiro 
(protagonist of ST 1-4), on assignment from Japan.  
Serving under commander Ratchet Altair (featured in 
"Sakura Taisen: The Movie," available on Region 1 DVD) 
and NY Combat Revue director Michael Sunnyside, Gemini 
and Shinjiro fight enemy robots and demons alongside 
their teammates Cheiron Archer, Rosita Aries, Diana 
Caprice, and Subaru Kujou in transformable mechs.

How to play============================================

Sakura Wars is a gridless strategy role-playing game 
with a dating simulation serving as the level-up 
system, thereby ridding the game of grinding and 
leaving a customizable story with streamlined battles 
in its place.  While the strategy or dating alone could 
be fun, put together it's like the first time peanut 
butter met jelly.

What does that mean?  Typically RPGs are divided into 
two modes: adventure and battle.  In adventure mode you 
read text and watch cinematics, whereas in battle mode 
you defeat enemies ad nauseum until the statistics of 
your party members are high enough to tackle the next 
boss.  In Sakura Wars, you don't just read the text in 
adventure mode; you as the protagonist converse with 
your teammates.  In each conversation, you are prompted 
to answer a question or solve a problem from a list of 
multiple choices like a quiz show on TV.  Each response 
is scored with an audible cue denoting whether the 
inquirer received positive or negative "trust" points.  
This conversation scoring mechanic is called the Live & 
Interactive Picture System (LIPS).  Before battle, the 
trust points earned from each LIPS are tallied 
separately by party member and added to their base 
stats.  A chart summarizes the updated stats during 
save point intermissions.  Now you essentially have 
leveled up your party members by merely reading a 
customizable story!  When the battle begins, you will 
not have to grind levels and simply can enjoy the 
thrill of clearing the map of enemies.  


Live & Interactive Picture System (LIPS)---------------

Normal LIPS: 
Answer the question before time expires.  
Occasionally, old choices will disappear and/or new 
ones may appear after half of the time has expired.

Analog LIPS: 
Attune your answer or action before the time expires.  
For example, move a sliding bar up or down to simulate 
a shout or whisper.

Stick LIPS: 
Move analog sticks in sequence to on-screen cues to 
fill a meter to the top before time expires.

Click LIPS: 
Click on different parts of a person or room.  
The location clicked may trigger normal or analog LIPS 
as described above.  

Double LIPS: 
A gauge bordering the edge of the screen slowly fills 
up as time passes.  Before the gauge is completely 
full, you must complete a sequence of multiple normal, 
analog, stick, or click LIPS.


Active & Real-time Machine System (ARMS)---------------

ARMS is Sakura Wars' turn-based battle system.  Each 
party member has an action point (AP) bar to spend on 
movement, healing, or normal, special, or team attacks.  
The amount of AP spent per action can be changed to 
suit your play style, and you can earn a few extra 
trust points by providing or asking help of the 
heroines.  Each action is allocated to a separate 
button that you can press in quick succession.  ARMS' 
focus on movement and seamless execution of attacks 
lends Sakura Wars the feel of a turn-based action game.

Walkthrough strategy:
To unlock scenes with greatest efficiency, save in 
separate slots at the beginning of each chapter and 
battle on your first playthrough.  After you beat the 
game, you will automatically unlock "Free and Easy Day 
in NY."  Next, load your Chapter 7 save and complete 
the game with 2-4 other heroines.  Then, start a new 
playthrough from Chapter 1 and complete the game with 
Ratchet.  Finally, crosscheck missing scenes in "Free 
and Easy Day" with the checklist at the end of this 
FAQ, and reload your save file(s) from the chapter(s) 
in question.  Scenes not unlocked automatically in the 
main storyline or by clearing an ending are denoted in 
the checklist with an asterisk, chapter ##, time 
frame, and event description.  You could conceivably 
unlock everything including the Supernova attack in 
two runs, splitting into 6 endings from the final two 
chapters.  

For your convenience, I have marked choices (with a 
dot ".") which allowed me to unlock both Ratchet's 
coupling attack and Shinjiro's Supernova on my second 
playthrough.

Objective: Destroy Kusakage's upper torso.
Strategy:  If Cheiron's trust points are high 
enough, you should be able to do a special dual attack 
with her (protecting her would boost points if you 
hadn't earned enough in the adventure mode).  Check to 
see when Cheiron's turn comes up.  If any enemy 
attacks before she does, then do the following:  Move 
Shinjiro (full HP, SP) halfway up Kusakage's torso, ask 
Cheiron "Help Me," then use the special dual attack to 
simultaneously take out the entire tail, a few nearby 
flying enemy units, plus either its tip or arms.

After destroying the boss' arms, take out its tail with 
team attacks between two units.  If the tail remains 
functional, it could destroy the train and temporarily 
send your squad airborne again.  Allow Cheiron to land 
on the train and destroy the boss' torso and head; she 
probably will have the strongest attack this round.  
Send a second unit to the front when the tip of the 
tail is gone.

menu)!  Dokurobo's cannons will hit STARs in mid-air, 
knocking off 100-150 HP, unless you destroy the 
corresponding cannon on the opposite side first.  
Alternate advancement up the left and right sides, 
destroying the skull cannons, and basically ignoring 
everything else.  Otherwise, reduce mid-air damage by 
defending before taking off, healing after landing, 
and/or sending a protected girl up ahead as a scout.  
Defeat Dokurobo with a couple special and/or team 
attacks.

cannons.  (Subaru's special attack is especially useful

blocks so you can move your units away from Iwatooshi 
after attacking.  Keep Shinjiro and the protected girl 
close to Iwatooshi to draw (and negate) any damage.  
The boss' special attack can knock your units off the 
building one-by-one(!!) even at full HP, but the 
protection skill nullifies it.

Strategy:  Send 2 to 4 of your 5 units into the air.  
Leave Diana on the ground.  Destroy the green 
generators to rid the air of pollution and gain access 
to the red ones.  Destroying the reds will lessen the 
deployment of robots and pollution bombs to the ground.  
Take care of the bombs first if they're within reach, 
then the enemy robots.  If the pollution seeps 
entirely, you may be able to clean it up using Diana's 
special (heal) 'attack.'

turn.  You can't damage her, so don't bother trying.  
Switch to mission 'physical'.  Protect your weakest.  
During the girls' turns, move far below her belt/chest 
area, defend, and heal (if necessary).

Part 3
Objective:  Uncover and destroy Ukigumo's dark pneuma.
Strategy:  Switch to mission 'spirit.'  Fly Shinjiro up 
within range of targeting Ukigumo's torso panels.  Call 
Diana for help and execute a coupling attack.  This 
should reveal Ukigumo's dark pneuma.  However, before 
you concentrate fire on that spot, divert all effort to 
destroying her head to prevent her from rotating her 
dark pneuma back underneath a repaired panel.  With the 
head destroyed, refocus all attacks on her dark pneuma.

Part 1
Objective:  Push 3 stone statues to the entryway.  
Strategy:  On Shinjiro's turn, destroy the robots 
blocking the hallway, then move through and ask Subaru 
to help before your turn is over.  On Subaru's turn, 
you should be able to move the first statue to the 
doorway.  Move her all the way back, and then you might 
be able to grab another and move it to the doorway, 
too.  After Subaru is done, destroy the nearest enemy 
regenerator with team attacks.  With any turns 
remaining, set up a relay line.  Take advantage that 
your range is essentially doubled if you end your turn 
equidistant from a statue and your relay teammate.  
Focus on destroying any enemy that picks up a statue.

Boss: Ran Maru (Garan)

Part 1
Objective: Release your 4 captured teammates from the 4
corners of Times Square.
Strategy:  The dozens of white circles you see are 
either switches to lower the electricity bindings or 
concealed mines.  You'll take less damage from the 
circles than you will from the robots.  Protect Gemini, 
then walk over as many circles as possible during 
Shinjiro's and Gemini's first turns.  If any of them 
lower the bindings of a teammate, move to that area 
with any movement points remaining.  If you can do it 
in 1 turn,you still might have enough left to do a 
special attackon the binding.  The key is to release 2 
partners quickly, then head back, destroy some robots, 
then reach the other 2.  The longer this stage lasts, 
the more difficult it becomes.  Switching from to 
mission 'spirit' to 'technique' may be useful after a 
few rounds.

Objective:  Destroy Ran Maru's cockpit.
Strategy:  Destroy the parts in this order:

- Backpack
- Collar
- Head
- Claw
- Propeller
- Sickle, guns, and enemy units
- Ran Maru's cockpit

Garan's backpack regenerates life, so you'd make no 
progress damaging anything until it's gone.  With its 
wide cylindrical attack, the collar is within range of 
any units near Garan's upper torso.  Similarly, the 
head has a large special attack range.  The claw can 
swallow one of your units until a teammate's attack 
releases its grip.  By the time Garan's major devices 
are destroyed, you might need to regroup and heal with 
Diana or by 'mission technique.'  After that, take out 
the propeller and some guns at the same time with a few 
team attacks.  If you're not quick enough, it'll blow 
you back up to the torso.  Once everything else is 
gone, Ranmaru sits utterly defenseless in her cockpit.  
Finish her off.

Alternative strategy: In mission spirit stratagem, move 
Shinjiro within range of the dark pneuma core and fuel 
tank.  Call Gemini for help.  Execute a coupling attack 
while targeting the core and any other parts or enemies 
that you can fit within range.  Spend spare command 
points and subsequent turns on joint attacks against 
Ranmaru's pneuma core as well.

December 1928, The Main Enclosure

Part 1
Objective:  Destroy the 8 chains anchoring Garan.
Strategy:  Split your group in half, Shinjiro and the 
strongest girl (protected) on one side and the rest on 
the other side.  Destroy the chain up front, then move 
Shinjiro as far as possible.  Use team attacks to take 
down some enemy units at the same time as the chains.  
During the second round, move your units out a safe 
distance (at least halfway to the outside wall from the 
abyss). Ran Maru will disrupt the mud floor, causing 
anything close to the center to get sucked in with 999 
HP damage!  Switch to 'mission technique' when you're 
halfway done, and heal as necessary.

Battle 07b---------------------------------------------
December 1928, Littlelip Theater

Part 2
Objective:  Destroy the 4 enemy generators.  Defend 
Littlelip Theater.
Strategy:  If you merely touch any enemy robot carrying
a bomb, you'll lose half HP.  Fortunately, the enemies 
blow themselves up in the process.  Therefore, you 
could look for wooden crates and carefully push them 
into any enemy holding a bomb.  They'll die with one 
hit, although you'd lose the movement points it took 
to walk there. 

With that in mind, carefully avoid all the enemy units.
On Shinjiro's first turn, move to the opposite end of 
the battle field.  Call on Diana to help, then move 
Shinjiro back across the battlefield to the near right 
side.  Change area, take out the generator, then end 
your turn.  On Subaru's turn, move to the near left, 
change area, destroy the generator with a special 
attack, then end your turn.  On Gemini's turn, move 
straight to the far right, and hopefully you'll have 
enough movement points remaining to destroy the 
generator with a special attack as before.  On Diana's 
turn, change to the far left area (she should be within 
1-2 movement points away), and use 7-8 regular attacks 
to destroy the final generator.

If this is your first run through the game, it might 
not be quite so easy.  Keep 1 unit to defend Littlelip 
Theater while the other 4 dart past the enemies and fly
to each of the 4 areas to take out the generators.  
Nevertheless, this stage should be one of the easier 
ones in the game.  Switch to 'mission technique' if you
must heal, as Diana probably will be split from the 
rest.

Battle 08----------------------------------------------
December 1928, The Skies over Manhattan

Part 1
Objective:  Defend the airship until it reaches an 
elevation of 7000 ft.  
Strategy:  Enemy robots and bombs will regenerate at 
random until the airship reaches 7000 ft.  (Ratchet 
will periodically announce your altitude).  Concentrate 
on destroying the airborne bombs and deck-level robots 
first, then get rid of airborne robots.  Use team and 
regular attacks to clear away multiple enemies.  Stay 
in 'mission spirit' stratagem to quickly regenerate SP.
If any one unit has dangerously low HP, use Shinjiro's 
'protect' command.

If you are having trouble:  Switch to technique 
stratagem so each character can heal herself.  Avoid 
using special attacks.  Concentrate on destroying 
multiple airborne bombs or deck-level robots with team 
attacks.  (Team attacks usually are just as powerful 
but cost far less than special attacks, and so you 
won't need to recharge very often.)  Airborne bombs are 
only 3 stars, so you could take out 2 per character's 
turn even if a teammate isn't close enough to do a team 
attack.  Keep 2 allies on port, 2 on starboard, and 2 
on the deck.  Rotate 3 to a side as needed, then 
redistribute back to 2-2-2 when things are back under 
control.

To get a head start on this level, move Shinjiro up to 
the manhole, ask a girl for help, then move to the bow 
of the ship, to the far side of a cluster of robots.  
You can destroy five of them with a team attack, 
leaving only 2 on the deck.  Take out the remaining two 
with a tea attack on the girl's turn immediately after 
Shinjiro's.  Now you can forget about the deck for a 
while (although more will come back eventually) and 
concentrate on the air.

SAVE POINT

Part 2
Objective:  Destroy Goryu's coffin.
Strategy:  'Mission Spirit' stratagem.  Protect Rosita.  
On Shinjiro's turn, destroy the nearest gate for 2 
movement points.  Walk ahead for another pt, then 
destroy the barrier for 3 pts.  Now, walk ahead as far 
as possible, summon Gemini, then retreat and use your 
team attack with her to destroy the line of enemy 
robots.  On Subaru's turn, move her as close to the 
coffin as possible, then end her turn.  On Gemini's 
turn, move her up to the coffin, use a team attack with 
Subaru, recharge with 2 movement points, then do a 
special attack on the coffin.  Now, you should be 
within 1 more team attack of destroying the coffin 
before the enemy has taken a single turn!  With another 
charater's turn, do a second team attack with Gemini 
(the coffin should be within range because Gemini is 
standing beside it), and then it's gone.  On Rosita's 
or Cheiron's turns, do a team attack with Shinjiro 
across the abyssto destroy one of the cannons.  When 
Subaru or Gemini is up next, walk behind the coffin to 
end the stage.

in 1 round. You'll have enough SP left to heal if 
needed.

Part 4
Objective:  Damage dark Shinjiro for 1 round. 
(Regardless, Part 4 may end after 1 round.)
Strategy:  Use special and team attacks. Heal with 
Diana's regular heal (wider than your other 
teammates'), then use her team attack.

When dark Shinjiro has lost >75% of his life.

Shinjiro will take a hit everytime you're destroying 
the smaller enemies.  Almost everything should be gone 
after one round.  Surround dark Shinjiro and take him 
down with team and special attacks!

Part 6
Objective: Destroy 4 or more immobile plates next to 
Tenkafubu's arms and tail.  Then destroy Tenkafubu's 
head.
Strategy:  Take out the arms, tail, and plates.  
Change Shinjiro to the top area, and call a girl to 
help him up there.  Do a team attack across the plates 
above Tenkafubu's head.  Use a regular or special 
attacks to finish those things off quickly.  The 2 top 
plates will detonate his spheres, which deal 60 x n 
damage (where n = the number of spheres).  That attack 
plus subsequent damage could destroy any one of your 
units before you have a chance to heal.  If you see the 
spheres, change area and destroy as many as possible 
with a team attack(s) stretched as far as possible.  
Tenkafubu's head occassionally will suck you down 1 
area, forcing you to waste your blue bar to move back 
up.

After the 2 side plates on the midsection and 2 plates 
on the tail section have been destroyed, Tenkafubu's 
head becomes vulnerable to attack.  If he's trying to 
attack with spheres, you could destroy those and deal 
his head some damage at the same time with team 
attacks.

Stay away from the yellow cylinders, which appear to be
areas where Nobunaga will break the ice.
