1. INTRODUCTION

This is an FAQ for Squaresoft's Final Fantasy X-2. It deals with abilities
and dresses, which are basically the core of the game's class system. During
battle, based on what Result Plates you have equipped and what Dresses
you have slotted in them, you can change your dress (i.e., class) at will,
with a resulting change in abilities. (See my Result Plate FAQ for more
on those). While in a particular class, you will start learning abilities
specific for that class, by way of gathering AP. AP is awarded to a
character when that character uses a particular ability it has already
learned; when a monster is defeated, every member of your party gains AP.

Learning abilities is the key to powering up your characters. More powerful
abilities tend to take more AP to learn. There are also certain abilities
you cannot learn before learning other ones; for instance, a Black Mage
cannot learn (i.e., cannot devote AP to) the Black Magic "Fira" if she
hasn't already learned "Fire". This FAQ will list abilities categorized
by dress, giving the names in both Japanese text and English (so that those
of you who can't read Japanese well can follow along), and give an
explanation of those abilties.

Certain abilities require extra steps to learn. For instance, all of the
Magic Gunner's "Magic Bullet" abilities (similar to Blue Magic from
previous FFs) require that the Magic Gunner get hit by that ability first.
Other abilities require certain items in your possession before you can
start learning them. The Utahime class has two dances that require special
items to learn; each of the special dresses also has "Break HP Limit" and
"Break Damage Limit" that can only be learned by getting special items. I
will note these in the FAQ and attempt to explain how to get them.

This FAQ makes use of SJIS encoding in order to display Japanese
characters. I included this feature so that if you do not know
Japanese, you can easily match up the characters on your TV screen
to the characters in this guide. You will need to have support for
viewing Japanese characters on your computer, however. Certain versions
of Windows should have it built in; otherwise, you'll either need to
get a program like NJStar Communicator, or you'll need to get 
Japanese character support for Internet Explorer (free from Microsoft)
and open this file in IE instead of Notepad/Wordpad.


2. ABILITIES/DRESSES

This section is split up by Dress. It is sorted by the in-game order
on the ability screen (so Gunner comes first, Magic Gunner second,
all the special dresses last, etc.)

Each ability will list the number of AP needed to learn it (0 means it
is mastered by default), the MP to use it, if necessary, and a brief
description of the ability. Auto abilities activate automatically and do
not need to be selected. All others are commands of some type.

Although there are fourteen standard dresses, each character's Trainer and
Mascot have different sets of abilities. Also, each special dress is actually
three separate parts. Thus, though there are only 17 dresses total, there are
actually 27 sets of abilities.

GUNNER ガンナー

How to Get: Yuna's Default Dress.

Abilities
Fight (戦う) 0 AP - Self-explanatory.
Quick Trigger (クイックトリガー) 0 AP - For a set period of time, pressing
   R1 will cause the Gunner to fire a shot. Mash R1 for the greatest effect.
Power Shot (パワーショット) 20 AP - Damage to a single enemy. 8 MP.
Hard Shot (ハードショット) 30 AP - Damage to a single enemy, ignoring
   defense. 8 MP.
Magic Shot (マジックショット) 30 AP - Magic damage to a single enemy. 8 MP.
Mental Shot (メンタルショット) 30 AP - Damage to an enemy's MP. 8 MP.
Quarter Shot (クォーターショット) 40 AP - Damages an enemy by 1/4th of their
   AP. 8 MP. 
Level Shot (レベルショット) 40 AP - Damage to an enemy based on own level.
   12 MP. 
Burst Shot (バーストショット) 60 AP - Critical damage to an enemy. 12 MP. 
Reverse Shot (リバースショット) 60 AP - Damage to an enemy; the higher its
   defense, the higher the damage. 8 MP.

How to Get: Complete the Mission at the Moonflow during either SL 1 or SL 2.

Robot Exterminator (機人退治) 20 AP - Quadruple damage to robot-type
   enemies. 3 MP.
Demon Seal Bullet (邪封弾) 20 AP - Quadruple damage to demon-type
   enemies. 3 MP.
Exterminator Bullet Lv. 2 (退治弾 Lv. 2) 30 AP - Preparation time for
   any extermination bullet down 40% (auto ability).
Fathom Lv. 2 (みやぶる Lv. 2) 20 AP - Enemy models can be rotated during
   Fathom (auto ability).
Fathom Lv. 3 (みやぶる Lv. 3) 100 AP - Fathom can be used against allies
   (auto ability).

Magic Bullets
Magic Bullets work similar to Blue Magic from the previous FFs. If a Magic
Gunner is hit by a learnable ability, she will learn that ability and be
able to cast it in subsequent battles by use of the Magic Gunner's Magic
Bullet ability.
Some things to note:
**The Magic Gunner appears to be immune to the ability if and only if she
is learning it. For instance, a Magic Gunner who is hit by Bad Breath for
the first time will learn it, and will also not be affected by it.
However subsequent Bad Breaths seem to affect her.
**Abilities do not transfer. That is, if Yuna learns Blaster as a Magic
Gunner, Rikku and Paine still have to learn it by themselves before they
can use it.
**Unlike Stragus in FF6, the ability actually has to hit the Magic Gunner 
for them to learn it. Thus, for a defensive ability like Mighty Guard, the 
only way for your party to learn it is if the enemy somehow casts it on you. 
This is usually accomplished via Reflect or Confuse.

And now for a list of the Magic Bullets:
Fire Breath (ファイアブレス) - Fire attack to all enemies.
Seed Cannon (タネ大砲) - Damages an enemy for 1/2 health.
Stone Breath (石のいぶき) - Petrify on all enemies.
Absorb (吸収) - Absorbs HP/MP from an enemy. 3 MP.
White Wind (ホワイトウィンド) - Heals all allies.
Bad Breath (くさい息) - Multiple status effects on all enemies.
Mighty Guard (マイティガード) - Shell and Protect on all allies.
Insanity Sun (インサニティサン) - Damage to all enemies.
Scream in the Night (真夜中の叫び) - Damage to all enemies.
Armor Piercing Bullet (徹甲弾) - Damage to one enemy.
Motorgun (モーターガン) - Damage to all enemies.
Genocide (ジェノサイド) - Damage to all enemies.
Quake (震天) - Damage to all enemies, plus Defense and Magic Defense down.

How to Get: Complete the Mihen Highroad and Mushroom Rock Road missions
            during SL 2 and take both Hikuri and Clasko onto your airship.
            Then take Clasko to the Calm Lands, follow him to the Monster
            Arena, and complete the mission there.

Uchikesu (Negate) (うちけす) 30 AP - Damages enemy and removes Shell/
   Protect/Reflect. 6 MP.
Kattobasu (Knock Out) (かっとばす) 40 AP - Kills enemy but can miss. 8 MP.
Bibiraseru (Scare) (びびらせる) 40 AP - Damages enemy and lowers Hit

   dancing.
Silence Dance (ちんもくダンス) 20 AP - Causes Silence on all enemies while
   dancing.
Magical Dance (マジカルダンス) 20 AP - While dancing, allies' MP will
   not decrease.
Mabaria Dance (マバリアダンス) 20 AP - While dancing, allies do not receive
   damage from magic.
Sleep Dance (おやすみダンス) 80 AP -  Causes Sleep on all enemies while
   dancing.
Carnival Dance (カーニバルダンス) 80 AP - While dancing, all allies' max
   HP multiplied by 2.
Breakdance (ブレーキダンス) 60 AP - Causes Slow on all enemies while
   dancing.
Stop Dance (ストップダンス) 120 AP - Causes Stop on all enemies while
   dancing.
Accel Dance (アクセルダンス) 120 AP - Causes Haste on all allies while
   dancing.
Final Dance (ファイナルダンス) 160 AP - While dancing, allies always
   get critical hits.
Support Song (応援の歌) 10 AP - All allies' attack up. 4 MP.

Note: In order to learn Magical Dance, you must get the Magical Dance
Encylopedia Volume 1 (魔道ダンス大全上巻) which can be earned by collecting 
all 10 Akagi Spheres, then clearing the Akagi Sphere dungeon near the Youth 
Alliance base. In order to learn Mabaria Dance, you must get the Magical Dance
Encyclopedia Volume 2 (魔道ダンス大全下巻) which can be earned by going to 
Djose Temple in SL 5 and defeating the giant machina there at top level. (To 
get the machina to top level, you'll have to excavate parts at Bikanel Island
numerous times and get the Al Bhed standing around in Djose to remodel
the machina).

How to Get: Complete the Mt. Gagazet Mission in SL 1 (the very first mission
            you get).

Stand on the Chocobo Feather on the ground for awhile to find an area 
where you can fly up and open a chest with some Phoenix Down. Then, in SL 
5 repeat again, and this time you will find the item you need.

3. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q. Why can't I master (insert dress here)?
A. In the case of the Magic Gunner, mastering them includes getting all the
Magic Bullets. Thus, even if you learned all the abilities you will not
get Master status in Magic Gunner unless you get all the Magic Bullets.
For Dancer and each of the special dresses, they all have abilities that
can be learned only after getting certain items. See the specific dresses
for details. For Mascot, you have to learn the "Iron Wall", "Assault", and
"SOS Protect" abilities from Fighter first.

Q. What are the best dresses?
A. Each class is really specialized for certain situations. Thus, some
classes will be more useful than others depending on what you want to do.
Mascot seems to be a rather powerful class but there are other candidates.
In my personal opinion, the most useful classes are White Mage, Berserker,
Samurai, Dark Knight, Gunner, and Mascot.
The special dresses are also very very powerful, if you manage to master
them and get the "Break Limit" abilities.

Q. How can I use these abilities while wearing other dresses?
A. Certain items will let you cross abilities. Each Mascot dresswear is
also specialized in this respect; for instance, Yuna's Mascot lets her use
most of the Dark Knight or Fighter abilities she's already learned, Rikku's
Mascot lets her use learned Berserker or White Mage abilities, and Paine's
Mascot lets her use Samurai and Black Mage abilities, which makes Mascot
a very powerful class. 
As far as accessories go, if you get Episode Complete status for O'aka
(by paying off his debt in SL 2 and then finishing all the missions at
Macalania in subsequent SL's) he will sell you specific items such as 
"Knowledge of Sword Techniques" or "Knowledge of Black Magic", which
will let you use those techniques if you have them equipped.
Finally certain Result Plates, when equipped, will also let you use these
sets of abilities (see my Result Plate FAQ for details).

Q. What should I master first?
A. It's really up to you. Because of the Mascot dresses, I'd personally
have Yuna master Fighter and Dark Knight, Rikku master White Mage and
Berserker, and Paine master Samurai and Black Mage as fast as possible.
Otherwise other classes have individual abilities that are fairly useful.
The Gunner's Quick Trigger and the associated Quick Trigger Lv. 2 and
Quick Trigger Lv. 3 are useful; the Thief's "Always Steal" and "Steal
Good Stuff" are good too.
