    "Goku finally defeats Piccolo, the Demon King, at the World Match. After this
    battle to the death, he returns to Kame House to be reunited with his friends,
     Just as Goku thinks that he can settle down with his family and live in peace,
     a mysterious alien calling himself Raditz appears. Goku is defeated by Raditz
    who kidnaps his son, Gohan - but vows to return to face the alien in a fierce
    battle."
    
    Dragon Ball Z Budokai is a 3D beat-em-up based oon the popular Dragon Ball Z
    anime series. The player can control any of 23 (well mostly) most popular
    characters, Z fighters as well as enemies. There are numerous gameplay mosed
    including Story (Play out Dragon Ball Z), World Match (Tenkaichi Budokai or
    tournament mode from previous games) where the player can earn money in order
    to purchase capsules, these contain moves which can be equipted to a character
    in order to customise the ultimate Z warrior. Of corse the time honoured
    two-player mode is featured. One of the new features of this game are the 3D
    interactive environments. Just like in the series you can literally smash an
    opponent through a mountain! I fully recommend this game to any Dragon Ball Z
    fan or anyone who likes their beat-em-ups with a little more OTT action than
    Tekken or Virtua Fighter.
    
    Dragon Ball Z is the famous manga and anime series produced by Akira Toriyama.
    The saries tells the story of Goku, his family and friends in their search for
    the Dragonballs, 7 magical balls which, when all collected, are said to summon
    a dragon (Shen-Long) who can grant a wish to the summoner. Throughout the
    series thay come into confrontations with numerous enemies like Vegeta, Frieza
    and Cell. Will the Z fighters prove victorious? You will just have to watch
    (or play through Story mode) to find out.

    The control system is simple enough, a combination of the one on previous
    Dragon Ball Z games and that of Virtua Fighter 4.

    Note in all circumstances the left analog stick can be used in place of the
    directional buttons. The game requires the use of an analog controller, your
    controller must b in the analog mode (The LED in the middle of the joypad must
    be on, if not press the analog button). Dragon Ball Z Budokai does not support
    a digital controller.

    /3. Terminology / Basic Techniques/
    ///////////////////////////////////
    
    Here I will explain some basic beat-em-up terminology and introduce some basic
    techniques. This is so that first timers can use the FAQ, not just those with
    a degree in beat-em-upology or Dragon Ball Z ism.
    
    Block
    /////
    
    Blocking is one of the first techniques a new player must learn or else you
    will lose, it's as simple as that. On the face of it, it seems simple enough,
    just hold the cross button (standard control setup). The challange is timing
    and switching between defense and attack. Blocking will root your character to
    the spot so holding the block button too early will leave you open to a throw
    or an unblockable attack. If you block too late the block will fail and your
    opponents attack will damage you. Blocking of most moves will result in guard
    damage, a reduced amount of damage. In addition to basic blocking, if your
    opponent throws a ki blast wave (circle button on standard control setup) if
    you time the block well (as late as possible) you will push the ki away or even
     throw it back to your opponent.
    
    Dash
    ////
    
    Dashing is perfromad by double tapping a direction button, holding the button
    the second time. Dashibg will result in your character, logically, running or
    gliding towards your opponent at a fair pace but upon reaching your opponent
    you will slow down. The main use of dashing is to evade your opponents attacks
    (but it's not as efficient as side-stepping) or for performing dash attacks.
    Dash attacks occur when you press punch or kick when you dash. These attacks
    are more powerful then the standard punch or kick and will send your opponent
    flying a long way. These attacks are very useful for sending your opponent out
    of the ring in World Match mode knocking your opponent through walls.
    
    Flying
    //////
    Unlike the anime series, flying is not a major feature in Budokai, in fact it
    has little relevance to the fighting. Certain moves such as throws and short
    range ki attacks will leave your opponent in the air, at which point pressing
    left or right will result in your character gaining or losing height in order
    to reach the same height as your opponent. There are no exter moves in mid air
    but some of the physical attacks have slightly different animations. There is
    no way of flying under your own will, you cannot fly by yourself.
    
    Ki
    //
    
    Ki is a special type of energy that all of the Z fighters possess. It can be
    used to enhance their strengh, perform energy attacks and transform to higher
    power levels. Your characters ki gauge is located underneath their health bar.
    Ki will be used when your character performs a special move and will slowly
    decrease when your character is in a transformed state. The ki gauge is charged
     up in two ways. Attacking your opponent with physical attacks will increase
    the gauge slowly but a faster way is to charge up. To charge up hold the block
    button then double tap backwards holding the button the second time. Your
    character will radiate ki during this time. When the bar fills you will gain a
    ki level, indicated by the number next to your ki gauge. Note that your ki
    gauge cannot go beyond level 7 and when charging up you are defenseless.
    Therefore it is of great importance to time your charging well in order to
    avoid a beating.
    
    Taunt - Thanks to

    You can have your character taunt by pressing triangle, square, circle and
    cross buttons at the same time. As well as winding up yuor opponent taunting
    will actually rob your oponent of a ki level, making it a much more strategic
    move than on other beat-em-ups.
    
    Combo
    /////
    
    This basically means that more than one attack or hit has been combined into a
    chain. After the first hit the following hits are unblockable. This is a very
    useful technique in order to maximise the damage inflicted to the opponent
    with every hit. The game already has some pre-built combos, for example
    repeatedly pressing punch or kick will usually result in a 4-5 hit chain with
    a final, more damaging attack. The game will display the number of hits your
    combo hasinflicted underneath your character. Half the fun, and therefore
    replay factor of the game is iventing your own killer combos to destroy a
    friend on two player duel mode.
    
    Jugglers / Juggle Combos
    ////////////////////////
    
    These are special combos in which the opponent is knocked into the air and is
    then "juggled" in the ait with another combo. While in the air, these are
    obviously unblockable and a good method of increasing damage dealt. These will
    be covered in greater detail in a future update.
    
    Counter Attack
    //////////////
    
    In order to understand this fully it must be made clear how each individual
    move is performed. The attack animation is split into 3 parts, standby,
    execution and recovery. Take for example a punch. The standby stage would
    be when the characters fist has just moved but before the attack has taken
    place. The execution part is the part when your characters fist is actually
    out and able to hit the opponent. The recovery part is when your character is
    withdrawing their fist after the attack. Only during the execution part of the
    attack can you actually damage your opponent, during the other two parts your
    character is uncontrolable and defenseless. Hitting your opponent when they
    are either in their perparation or recovery part of their attack is called a
    counter attack.
    
    A counter attack will cause a larger amount of damage than a regular attack
    and will cancel the attack your opponent was partaking in. It is a good
    strategy, especially against the slower characters (like #16 and #19) and less
    experianced players to wait for their attack and hit on the counter with a
    fast attack. Performance of a counter attack can be identified by the words
    counter attack appearing underneath your characters name. However there are
    two exceptions to the counter attack rule.
    
    Guard Break
    ///////////
    
    Some larger moves cannot be countered and performing the counter attack method
    will instead perform a guard break. The opponent will be left temporarily
    defenseless as they are paralysed, the opponent will raise their arms as if
    they are caught by surprise. Guard break is indicated by the words guard break
    appearing underneath the name of the character that perfromed the guard break
    move, not the one who's guard is broken. Guard break is more useful than
    counter attack because a skilled player can follow up the guard break with a
    combo to inflict massive damage.
    
    Burst mode
    //////////
    
    Each character has an unblockable attack that can be used by pressing punch
    and kick together (also the R1 button on standard control setup). This move
    will entail a long standby stage as the character gathers energy,
    indicated by the characters limbs glowing. I will discuss this more in the
    moves section. However should any pert of the opponents anatomy touch the
    character performing this move in the standby stage then burst mode will
    be activated.
    
    Burst mode is reminiscant of those scenes on the anime series when both
    fighters will throw a fast volley of attacks at each other. The screen will
    partialy crack with a glass breaking effect then both characters will launch
    fast attacks at each other. After the burst mode animation has finished the
    character who gained the advantage during the animation will get a free shot
    at the opponent. In order to ensure that it is you that is gaining this
    advantage repeatedly press punch and kick, whoever presses the buttons most
    will gain the advantage. One interesting feature of this is that the cinematic
    is interactive, if you look each button press actually makes a diffrence to
    the video, which shows the effort the devopers have put into the graphics.
    Like guard break this can be used to begin a combo.
    
    Throw
    /////
    
    You can pick up and throw your opponent by pressing punch and guard at the
    same time (R2 on standard control setup). Logically you can only pick up your
    opponent when you are at close range. A throw is unblockable and will deal a
    set amount of damage, you cannot counter with a throw and deal the extra
    counter attack damage. Throws are pretty powerful usually inflicting 250
    points of damage.
    
    Sidestep
    ////////
    
    Sidesteps can be performed by pressing up and guard or down and guard at the
    same time. This will result in your character taking a step to the left or
    right of your opponent around them. This has three main uses. Firstly it can
    be used as an evasive manuevre to dodge an opponents attack. The advantage
    this has over blocking is, if performed sucessfully, you won't receive guard
    damage and will be able to counter attack easier. Secondly it is used to line
    yourself up to knock an opponent out of the ring in World Match mode with a
    dash attack. Trust me you will not win World Match Advanced without it! If
    your on the edge of the ring simply sidestep around your opponent, attack and
    there you go, one cheap win. Finally, in a similar fashion to the former it is
    used to knock an opponent through walls to increase damage and open new areas
    of the 3D environments. Note when Frieza and Great Saiyaman sidestep they
    perform a teleport.
    
    Transformation
    //////////////
    
    In order to transform you must have a certain number of ki levels denoted by
    the transformation. Check the skills option in the pause menu to find out how
    much exactly. Once you have the correct amount of ki simply press punch, kick
    and guard at the same time in order to transform to the highest stage possible
    at the current time. Transformation will increase your characters attack power
    by a certain amount, the first transformation to 110%, the second to 120% etc.
    Transforming will not actually lower your ki level but, if your ki level falls
    below the amount needed to transform to that level in the first place and you
    are knocked to the floor then you will revert back to the next feasible stage
    (if any). Note there is no way to manually power down you can only be attacked
    by an opponent to power down.
    
    3D Environments
    ///////////////
    
    The 3D environments bring a new edge to gameplay never before seen in Dragon
    Ball Z games but often seen in the anime. Basically you can now attack an
    opponent into a wall or, depending om the environment and your position, knock
    them right through. A physical atack that knocks an opponent into a wall does
    a set 100 damage. Knocking an opponent through a wall will cause the same
    damage and open up a new area of the arena (Islands is a good arena to try
    this out in). Combine this with the sidestep to maximise the damage you can
    inflict.

    Here I will print character informatio regarding their default moves, to find
    information on their extra skills check out the Capsule list.
    
    
    Combinations will be written in the following format. Each letter corresponds
    to a button on the controller as defined in the controls part of the FAQ. A
    plus sign (+) denotes that the buttons either side of it must be pressed at
    the same time. For example the command F+PPKKE means that first forward and
    punch must be pressed at the same time, then you need to press punch, kick,
    kick, energy, one after the other at a reasonable pace.
    
    Power relates to how much damage an attack will do, however on transformations
    it relates to what your chatacters attack power will be after the
    transformation. Note that hitting an opponent in the back with a physical
    attack will result in a 25% damage increase.
    
    In order to acquire an additional costume for your characters press square
    instead of cross when selecting them.
    
    Goku
    ////
    
    Goku is Dragon Ball Z's main character (arguably). His attacks are stronger
    than the younger fighters while his speed does not suffer. His Super Saiyan
    transformation has the highest attack% in the game. The trade off for lots of
    transformation however is a small range of attacks. Dashing attacks are
    performad by double tapping forward, holding forward the second time, then
    pressing punch or kick.

    Kid Gohan

    The son of Goku at age 8, Gohan is one of the games weaker characters. His
    attacks are fairly weak and he only has one transformation. His small height
    means he has a smaller range than many other characters but can evade high
    attacks easier.

    Teen Gohan

    Still the son of Goku, this time at age 11. His ki attacks and Super Saiyan
    level is higher than Goku's at this point in the anime but on this game his
    physical attacks are still weaker than Goku's. His capsules has some of the

    Great Saiyaman

    Gohan's alter ego, so he can fight crime while his friends at high school
    don't find about his  power as the "Gold Fighter" who fought Cell seven years
    ago. At first impression Great Saiyamen seems even worse than Dodoria due to
    his awful attack power but he's not actually that bad. His range on his
    physical attacks is impressive. Give him a go.

    Piccolo

    The evil side of the Earth Guardian, Kami. Piccolo was initially an enemy of
    Goku but changed his ways after he managed to find a friend in Gohan when he
    became his Sensei. Being a Namekian, his attacks are somewhat diffrent to the
    humans and to transform he fuses with allies. Piccolo's attack power is
    slightly greater than Goku's but his speed is somewhat lacking.

    A three eyed human with the ability to make copies of himself, Tien is one of
    the strongest humans. Indeed at the very beginning and in Dragonball he was
    stronger than Goku. However on the game his attacks are a little weaker than
    Goku's. He has many of them but he lacks a transformation.

    A member of the Earth's special forces and Bulma's first boyfriend, Yamcha's
    power level and game attack power is significantly lower than the other human
    / saiyan fighters. However the Wolf Fang Fist, for it's ki cost, is very

    Trunks

    First son of Bulma and Vegeta, Trunks came from the future to warn Goku of the
    android invasion and give Goku the vaccine for his heart disease. He also got
    caught in a fight with Mecha Frieza and defeated him with a single sword
    slash. His attack power is similar to Goku's and Vegeta's but just look at

    Vegeta

    The prince of Saiyans, Vegeta lives only to acquire a strenght to become the
    strongest fighter in the universe. This obsession drove him to the dragonballs
    on earth but was defeated by Goku. From then on he has trained obsessivly for
    one aim, to defeat Kakarot (Goku). Attack wise Goku and Vegeta are near equal,
    Vegeta having the powerful Final Flash attack but Goku has more
    transformations. A lot of players will be split between thses two as the games
    best character.

    Raditz

    The first Saiyan to arrive on Earth and Kakarot's (Goku's) brother, Raditz
    kidnapped Gohan and threatened to take him back with him if Goku didn't kill
    100 humans in one day. His attack power is lower than Goku's or Vegeta's  and
    all his attackes are named after days/times.

    Dragonbals in order to wish for eternal life. Friexa was the one that enslaved
    the Saiyans and destroyed planet Vegeta because he feared that the legendary
    Super Saiyan would appear and destroy him. Frieza is a surprisingly powerful
    character with a lot of powerful moves and some excellent support capsules
    like "Frieza's Space Ship" which will revive him after he loses.

    Mr.Satan, or Hercule in the redubbed series, is the World Martial Arts
    Champion. He is just a human with no special powers, he has no mastery of ki,
    yet he ends up getting caught up in ventures of the Z fighters, firstly
    against Cell. Hercule is, in some peoples eyes, Dragon Ball Z's funniest
    character. Some of his moves, like the Satan Miracle Bomber or the Present
    for You, are just hilarious. Note that Hercule has no ki attack by pressing
    circle, instead he performs a jumping kick for 78 damage.

    Upon starting your game or loading a previous game you will be presented with
    6 dragonballs each corresponding to a mode. Pressing left and right will
    change the dragonball selected, and press cross to select a mode of play.
    
    Story mode. 1 Star Dragonball
    /////////////////////////////
    
    Story mode is a recreation of the Dragon Ball Z storyline. The story will be
    simulated by means of fights, cutscenes and the occasional minigame. The story
    mode is split into episodes, not the episodes from the real anime series but
    made up episodes splitting the saga into 7 to 12 episode. The story mode is
    split into three sagas, Saiyan saga, Namek Saga and Android saga. After
    clearing story mode if you enter story mode again you will be presented with a
    menu showing all the episodes you have completed and allowing you to play some
    new ones. for more information on this mode as well as a walkthrough of each
    episode, check out the Story mode section of the FAQ.
    
    Duel moode. 2 Star Dragonball

    This mode allows you to take part in single one-on-one battles against any
    character hou have unlocked as any character you have availible. Although you
    could use this mode to get some practice in against a real fighting opponent
    with a non infinite life bar, you would be better off using the World Match
    mode because you will also gain money in thaat mode. The main use of duel mode
    is the two player option. Yes the infamous two player fight mode is found
    right here. After completing Story and World Match mode, this is where you
    will be spending most of your time.
    
    World Match. 3 Star Dragonball
    //////////////////////////////
    
    World Match is a knockout tournament mode where the player fights for prize
    money. Prize money can be spent in Mr.Popo's shop to buy capsules, dragonballs
    and secret modes. After completing Story mode (which won't take long) this is
    where you will be spending most of your time because if you want to customize
    the ultimate Z fighter you're going to need capsules and here is where you win
    the money to buy them.
    
    World Match mode can at first seem incredibly difficult as you are knocked out
    of the ring almost instantly. however there ate some techniques you will need
    to win. First is the sidestep, use this to move yourself from the edge of the
    ring so that your opponent always has their back to the edge of the ring. Next
    use dashing attacks to knock your opponent out of the ring but watch out for
    opponents sidesteps, if they sidestep and your dash attack misses you've as
    good as lost as they will effortlessly knock you out of the ring. I cannot
    stress enough sidestep is the most importand technique in this mode. If you
    insist on K.O.ing your opponent then again make sure your back is never faced
    to the edge of the ring.
    
    the World Match is split into three levels.
    
    Novice - The novice mode is availible after you have acquired 8 characters,
    after you have completed the Saiyan saga. The tournament has 8 challengers,
    you will partake in 3 fights and is arranged as shown on the right. The prize
    for winning is 10,000 zenie and 5,000 zenie for runner-up.

    Adept - To unlock this tournament you must both have won the novice level
    tournament and have unlocked a total of at least 16 characters. After that you
    will be able to purchase the World Match (Adept) for 4000 zenie from Mr.Popo's
    Skill Shop. This tournament has 16 challengers and you will partake in 4
    fights. The prize for winning is 30,000 zenie and the runner up receives
    15,000 zenie. This tournament is a step up in difficulty from the last one but
    with good technique still shouldnt cause too much trouble. In addition to
    30,000 zenie when you win this tournament for the first time you will unlock
    Mr.Satan as a playable character and be able to buy the Legend of Mr.Satan
    mode from the skill shop for 4,000 zenie.

    Advanced - This tournament can be unlocked after you have both beaten the
    adept level tournament and have acquired 20 characters. To do this you must
    have collected every character from story mode and unlocked Mr.Satan from the
    previous tournament. Then you can buy this tournament from the skill shop for
    4,000 zenie. 20 challangers partake in this level tournament and you will face
    5 opponents in your bid for the champion spot. I know what you're saying, how
    can you have a 5 tier tournament with just 20 characters, surely you need 32.
    Well 4 characters are seeded and only have to partake in 3 fights,
    unfortunately you will never fall into that position and must always fight 5.
    Consult the diagram for more information. 50,000 zenie will be awarded to the
    victor while 25,000 zenie will cushion the blow of second place. This
    tournament is very difficult in places, the final fight in particular will
    really test your skill. As well as a tidy lump sum, upon winning this
    tournament for the first time you wll unlock the final hidden character, the
    Great Saiyaman. Why it couldn't have been Vegetto or Gotenks or even Buu I
    don't know but, oh well, he makes a good punch bag.

    Edit Skills. 4 Star Dragonball

    The first time you select this mode you will be given a 10 page introduction
    to ESS the Exciting Skill System. For more information on ESS check out the
    ESS guide a little later on. On subsquent occasions and after the lecture is
    over you must select a memory card or to partake in a capsule trade, if you
    select a memory cadr you will be presented with 5 options.
    
    Skill List - Pretty self explanatory, here you will find a list of all the
    capsules you have acquired. The characters are split into 4 groups, Saiyans,
    Humans, Aliens and Androids. After that you will find all your system
    capsules, unlocked characters and modes, and finally your collected
    dragonballs. For more infromation on these check out the ESS guide.
    
    Edit Capsules - After selecting this option you can select a character by
    pressing left and right then pressing cross. After that you can select a slot
    with cross and then select a capsule to put in that slot. Press triangle to
    finish. Formore information check out the ESS guide.
    
    Skill Shop - Selecting this option will bring you to Mr.Popo's Skill Shop.
    Here you will be able to buy capsules to equip to a custom character to give
    them attacks and abilities. You will have 4 options to purchase. Special,
    which for 2,000 zenie will get you a random red special capsule. Physical will
    get you a random blue physical capsule for 2,000 zenie. Support, costing 2,000
    zenie gets you a random green support capsule. Random will get you a random
    capsule for 3,000 zenie. Recommended will get you whatever capsule is stated
    at the price it says. This is probably the best option as you can avoid buying
    doubles of capsules unnecessasarily. Exiting and reentering the shop will
    change the recommended capsule. Occasionally dragonballs will be on sale and,
    at times specified in the World Match section of the guide, new modes will be
    availible for purchase.
    
    ESS tutorial - Replay the ESS tutorial you saw when you first selected Edit
    Skills.
    
    Exit - Erm.
    
    Practice. 5 Star Dragonball

    In ths mode you can fight against a dummy opponent with infinite life bars for
    the pair of you allowing you to practise all aspects of gameplay. First of all
    you must select a character, an opponent and an arena, then the practise will
    begin.
    
    In the pause menu you can access a list of all the skills your character can
    use at the time. Select a move with the cross button and the command will be
    displayed at the bottom of the screen. If you manage to perform the move
    correctly the word OK will be displayed next to the command.
    
    On the screen in the middle it will display your maximum combo, last moves
    damage, combo damage, highest amount of damage you have amnaged to inflict,
    Attack power % and guard power %. The attack power % relates to how much
    damage your attacks will perform compared to the standard damage printed in
    the character move lists. Guard % shows how much damage received will be
    decreased.
    
    Options. 6 Star Dragonball
    //////////////////////////
    Selecting options will present you with the following, erm, options. I will
    keep this brief.
    
    Game Options - Here you can choose the computer difficulty, the strengh of
    their attacks and life bars, the comparitive strengh of your character etc.
    
    Save / Load - You shouldn't really need this as the game auto saves. You will
    only need it if you are changing slots or memory cards.
    
    Controller - Change the standard control setup, set it to a previous Dragon
    Ball Z control setup, or inded, anything you want.
    
    Screen - Adjust the screen brightness and reposition the screen. Useful if,
    like me, your useless RF signal dumps the picture too far to the left.
    
    Sound - Select stereo or monoural music, adjust the volume, shame there is no
    sound test.
    
    Language - Select one of a number of European languages.
    
    Exit - Hmm.
    
    Legend of Mr.Satan. 7 Star Dragonball
    /////////////////////////////////////
    
    To unlock this mode you have to have unlocked Mr.Satan by winning the World
    Match Adept tournament. Check the World Match section for more information.
    After that simply buy Legend of Mr.Satan for 4000 zenie from Popo's skill
    shop.
    
    This is basicly a Street Fighter like arcade mode where you have to defeat all
    opponents. There is no continues in this mode so if you lose just one fight,
    oh well, back to the start. Fortunately the is a choice of three difficulty
    settings, Novice, Adept and Advanced.
    
    After each fight your remaining health, technique and remaining time will be
    calaculated into a score. I'm not sure exactly how to calculate your score,
    You have a time limit of 99 seconds except against Vegeta in which you only
    have 60 seconds (He obviously really wanted to blow his brains out, can't
    blaim him) I will post it in future. After wining all 11 fights you will
    receive a final score and a passcode. Log onto

    to build a league table of the worlds best Dragon Ball Z Budokai players.

    My advice to win this modeis to stay close to your opponent and use the
    sidestep often. This is because Mr.Satan has no ki attacks, pressing circle
    will result in a jumping kick. At a distance you will be at a disadvantage.
    Keep close and keep constantly attacking and you should be victorious. Bear
    in mind that the Cell rong has 4 poles you can knock the opponent into (but
    not destroy).

    Goku and Gohan have visited Kame House to see their friends when Raditz
    appears, he says that Goku is a Saiyan and that he was sent to Earth to wipe
    out all life. After kidnapping Gohan Goku is told that if he doesn't kill 100
    humans by tommorow he will never see Gohan again. Goku and Piccolo go off in
    chase.

    capsule, unlocking Raditz as a playable character.

    Faults/Ommisions from Story Mode
    ////////////////////////////////
    
    For those whom which Budokai is your first experiance in the world of Dragon
    Ball Z or those who realised the story in some parts simply doesn't make sense
    I have compiled a small list of faults. If you find any more faults please
    e-mail them to me at omniyugi@hotmail.com, full credit will be given.
    
    1. When Raditz arrived and kidnapped Gohan, Goku was told that he would never
       see his son again unless he killed 100 humans by the next day.
    
    2. When Poronga was summoned on Namek by Gohan, Krillan and Dende, story mode
       claims that the third wish (of three) was to revive Piccolo. On the anime
       it was in fact the first wish to revive Piccolo, the second wish on the
       anime, which is not mentioned on the story mode, was for Vegeta's
       immortality, but Guru died before the wish could be carried out. When the
       Dragonballs creator dies so do the balls. This is why they turned grey and
       Vegeta was asking if he is immortal or not, on the story mode seemingly for
       no reason.
    
    3. After Cell has self destructed and returned in the beyond perfection form,
       on the stroy mode a fight between him and Super Saiyan 2 Gohan takes place
       before he kills Mirai Trunks. On the anime Mirai Trunks is killed as soon
       as this beyond perfection Cell appears.

    4. The battle with Raditz:
       Piccolo losses one of his arms during the battle with Raditz. In the game
       you can clearly see from several different angles that Piccolo's arm
       is intact.
    
    5. Dende's death:
       The scene where Dende is killed by Frieza is left out.
    
    6. Piccolo's injury before the final battle on Namek:
       This would make no sense at all to most people who didn't see the anime
       first. Before you see Krillin get killed by Frieza you see Piccolo walking
       around with no problem. However after Goku goes SSJ you see Gohan with an
       injured Piccolo on his back. The game left out the part where Piccolo was
       hit with an attack by Frieza.
    
    7. Cell's Solar Flare:
       In the anime both Trunks and Krillin had just arrived following Piccolo's
       fight with Cell and were also hit with the Solar Flare. In the game they are
       nowhere to be seen.

    ESS is arguably Dragon Ball Z Budoakai's best feature. It provides a means of
    customising a character to suit your play style, then putting your custom
    character against the world. For advice on how to create the ultimate z
    Fighter read on.
    
    To customise a character you must win capsules, There are 4 types of capsules
    but only three of the can be used to customise a character.
    
    Special - Capsules containing Ki attacks, Death moves and Transformations eg
    Super Saiyan.
    
    Physical - Capsules containing physical attacks and throws eg Dragonthrow.
    
    Support - Capsules that assist the character or hinder the oppoonent eg Senzu
    Bean
    
    System - Capsules that contain characters, modes and Dragonballs eg Goku.
    These are not used to customise characters, merely to gain them in the first
    place
    
    There are two ways to acquire capsules, firstly is to win them from Story
    mode. This is an easy method but can only win a limited number of capsules.
    The other is to buy them from Mr.Popo's Skill Shop.
    
    The Skill Shop
    //////////////
    
    Remember how in the World Match mode I said you win zenie, well here is where
    you spend it. To get here select Edit Skills from the main menu then select
    Skill Shop. Once there you can choose to buy a random capsule from either the
    Special, Physical or Support classes for 2,000 zenie. To buy a random capsule
    (Note system capsules are not availible by this method).
    
    Finally you cn choose the recommended option and this is my preferred option.
    You will be able to buy the capsule show for the amount specified. This has
    the obvious advantage of knowing what you are buying but may end up more
    expensive then using the random option. To change the recommended capsule
    leave and reenter the shop. When I specified that a certaim mode was availible
    from the Skill Shop in the World Match section of the guide it will always be
    the recommended capsule until you buy it. Dragonballs also appear in the
    recommended option rarely. You caan look at the recommended capsule for more
    information by pressing square.
    
    The ESS capsule

    Now you have gone and bought, or won, a load of capsules now what do you do
    with them. First you need to underdtand how capsules work, and to do this you
    need to look at the capsule in question in either Skills List, Change Caps or
    Skill Shop by pressing square when the capsule is hghlighted.

    1. Rarity - This denoted how rare the capsule is. If the top bar has a blue
    stripe on a blue background it is common, if it has a grey stripe on a blue
    background it is uncommon, a gold stripe on a blue background denotes it being
    rare and a gold stripe on a gold background shows you are the owner of a super
    rare capsule.
    
    2. Name - What the capsule is called
    
    3. Effect - What the capsule does. In brackets it will say (all characters can
    use) if every character can use this capsule or (see reverse for character
    information) if only select characters can use it.
    
    4. Firing Conditions - It will here state the button command to use the move,
    the amount of ki needed and any transformations needed. If it is a support
    capsule it will state here when it is activated.
    
    5. Additional Effects. These symbols denote additional information regarding
    the capsule.
    
    If a green ciricle with two arrows pointing in opposite directions is there
    then this capsule can be traded to another memory card.
    
    If a red cross symbol is there then this capsule cannot be traded.
    
    If a yellow circle with a red P in it is there then this move can be powered
    up by equipping multiple (up to two) copies of the capsule at once.
    
    If a red circle with a yellow Z is there then this capsule is single use per
    fight only.
    
    The blue circle with a number in denotes how many of your seven slots in your
    characters custom traywould be used equipping this capsule.
    
    6. Information - Which characters can use the capsule under which
    transformations. If none are mentioned then all can use. Additional
    information about the move
    
    7. Comments - Quotes from Dragon Ball Z regarding this capsule.
    
    Custom Tray
    ///////////
    
    There is only one more step to build the ultimate Z Fighter. Select Change
    Caps. from the Edit Skills menu to equip capsules. Select a charachter wuth
    the cross button then press cross again to select capsules. Remember there are
    seven slots in the custom tray and bear in mind the cost of each capsule.
    Certain capsules cannot be equipped (like Super Saiyan 2) cannot be equipped
    unless a previous version is also equipped (Super Saiyan).
    
    Capsule Combinations
    ////////////////////
    
    To create characters with powerful ki attacks you should equip multiple copies
    of that ki attack and then enhance your characters attack power. You may wish
    to use transformations.
    
    For powerful physical attacks increase your attack power with multiple support
    capsules.
    
    For a defensive player use defense increasing capsules and a senzu bean.
    
    A useful combination that I used to win World Match Advanced with Trunks is:

    This will mean your oponents health wil rather rapidly deplete by itself while
    yours won't be affected. The health drop will stop beyond a certain low level
    at which point you will only have to hit the opponent with a few physical
    attacks and you will win every match. To further assist your victory Senzu
    Bean is included to give you 2 life bars to defeat your opponent. I know it's
    a bit cheap but just stay away from your opponent and the edge of the ring
    until the Viral Heart Disease stops depleting your opponents health then
    quickly kill them and you should easily win even the hadrest tournament and
    unlock Great Saiyaman.

    capsules. These are won by wishing for them from Shenron. This capsule will
    give your character every single one of thier special attacks and

    it's effect. Use means how many times per fight you can use the capsule. Cost

    Selecting your character with square will result in a different costume than
    using the cross button.

    As well as move and system capsules you can buy Dragonball capsules from
    Popo's skill shop for 8000 zenie. You will win the 4 star dragonball for
    completing story mode. After acquiring all 7 dragonballs you will be able to
    summon Shen Long and make a wish for anything you want ... as long as it's a
    breakthrough capsule. Breakthrough capsules are a single capsule you cannot
    buy from Popo containing every single special and physical attack for
    whichever character it's for. The breakthrough capsule will, unfortunately,
    take up all seven slots in the custom tray. The character selected to remove
    the breakthrough capsule is randomly selected, but to select a character reset
    your console and resummon until the character of your choice appears.

    "Simply pull the memory card from the system before you see the choices, then
    if your preferred char. isnt on the list, pick one anyway, the system will try

    or you can not have the skill, you press NO, you will sit through a short
    "farewell" animation, then be taken back to the "Dragon Ball Skills List"
    where you will find all 7 Balls on your list. Repeat this trick until you have
    the desired char. "breakthrough" capsule."

    Q. How can I fly
    A. You cannot fly by yourself, you have to knock your opponent into the air and
    then press the direction button to move towards them gaining height. Read the
    terminology / basic techniques section for more information.
    
    Q. Why can't I select Adept or Advanced level World Match?
    A. As it says earlier on, to play Adept you must have won Novice and acquired
    16 characters, then buy it for 4,000 zenie from the skill shop. To play
    Advanced you must have won Advanced and acquired 20 characters, then buy it
    for 4,000 zenie from the skill shop.
    
    Q. How do I collect Dragonballs.
    A. Buy them for 8,000 zenie from the skill shop.
    
    Q. How do I play as Mystic Gohan
    A. Reas the rumours section. I'm near certain he isn't on the game.

    I don't want this section to get out of hand bacause I'm near certain most of
    these will be wrong anyway. They may however be the occasional one that is
    correct so I will print them anyway, it could be a laugh.
    
    Play as Vegeto / Gotenks
    ////////////////////////
    
    This rumour stems from the fact that, before the game was released, on a
    character list published on the Infogrames website Vegeto and Gotenks
    featured. It may crop up as an Action Rplay code, remember the SNES version of
    Mortal Kombat where the fatalities were taken out at the end but you could get
    them back.
    
    Play as Mystic Gohan
    ////////////////////
    
    Before the game was released you may have heard the rumour that if you
    complete World Match Advanced on the Hard difficulty setting with the Great
    Saiyaman, a message saying you have unlocked Mystic Ghan would appear. To
    control him highlight Great Saiyaiman and hold select while selecting him. Let
    me make it clear this is NOT TRUE. Mystic Gohan does NOT EXIST by this method,
    it may crop up as as an Action Replay code.
    
    Play as Buu / Spopovich / Dabura / Babidi
    /////////////////////////////////////////
    
    This is based purely on the fact that they appear on the box of the PAL
    version of the game. Im 99.99999% certain they don't exist so please don't
    e-mail me asking me about them.
    
    Play as SSJ4 Goku
    /////////////////
    
    As quoted from the GameFAQs cheat section
    
    "Beat World Tournament mode with all characters on advanced level. Then master
    all characters until they have perfect stats. SSj4 Goku will be behind normal
    Goku, just press select + X and SSj4 Goku's picture will appear. Before the
    fight Goku will power up to SSj4, his power will be the same as full powered
    SSj though."
    
    This is NOT TRUE. For starters there is no such thing on the game as "perfect
    stats", secondly this has been tested and is proven not to work. Sorry. Once
    again it could appear on Action Replay if the code is there but I severely
    doubt it.
    
    Play as Uub / Pan / etc.

    Pretty much every Dragon Ball Z character has been rumoured to feature in the
    game and the message is almost the same in every case, they simply don't
    exist. Sorry to disappoint you but you will not be playing as these characters
    until a sequel at least.
    
    Alternate costumes
    //////////////////
    
    It is rumoured that you arer able to select some of the alternate costumes
    used in story mode, like Vegeta in Saiyan Uniform with his Scouter on that he
    has on during the Saiyan Saga fight. However no method of how to unlock thses
    costumes has arisen. I am almost certain there will be an Action Replay code
    for this eventually, as you can control some of these characters with these
    costumes in the Story mode so the code is there.
    
    Fusion
    //////
    In the prerelease information from infogrames there was mention of an option
    called fusion, unfortunatly to my knowledge the only occurance of fusion the
    the game is the Fuse with Kami transformation by Piccolo. We will have to see.
