"Two words: Replay Value!!"
Activision is one company that has been around since the Atari 2600 era. They have made game for almost every console since. Now, they have released a huge collection of over 45 of their greatest Atari 2600 games. This collection is Activision Anthology.
Activision really went over the top with this compilation. Over 45 of their 2600 titles appear here. Everything for their greatest hits like Pitfall and River Raid and unreleased games like Kabobber and Title Match Pro Wrestling appear in this compilation. They also added many unlockable items such as patches and old 2600 era commercials. These extra bells and whistles give the game huge replay value. This collection
is well worth the time and effort given.
Gameplay: 7/10: Most of the classic gameplay remains in tact for this collection. Games like Pitfall
retain their classic feel with solid controls with the PS2 controller. Other games, however, like
Crack Pots, have trouble with the Analog controls given. Those games were used with the Paddle controller back
in the day, and Activision made the controls too loose with the analog sticks, making each of those titles move too fast on the screen. Otherwise, each game plays just as well as its classic counterpart.
Graphics: 7/10: The collection retains a perfect retro feel to it. Some unlockable modes such as Cloud Cover Mode, and the very retro Disco Mode give each game a new way to play them. Each game retains its classic graphics from their older counterparts. Activision also added a great game select screen taken from a classic retro setting. There is also an opening full-motion sequence featuring some of the blocky graphics in full 3D. Some gamers, who like sharper, more 3D looks, will be turned off by the older graphics shown here. If they can get over that, then they will find a treasure of great titles to choose from.
Sound: 10/10: Activision did an excellent job restoring every bleep and bloop from each game. They also added a compilation of 80's songs to add to the retro experience. They really went out of their way to give gamers the full retro experience.
Overall: 9/10: Had it not been for the huge replay value, I would have given this collection an 8. The fact that there are 45+ titles to choose from, and hundreds of different easter eggs to unlock make this compilation a must-buy. Also, with a $20 price tag, there is really no reason not to pick this huge collection up. Buy it today!
