1) Guide History

2/9/2003 - Fixed a minor error, and added the section "Why Use Zhuge
Liang?"
2/7/2003 - Added a little note on 10th Weapon Acquiration, as well as
fixing a little error I made.
2/1/2003 - I have an announcement to make. They are making two new Dynasty
Warriors games: Dynasty Warriors - Extreme Beach Volleyball. Capitalizing
on the success of DOA - EXtreme Beach Volleyball, DW - EBV will feature
popular DW characters like the Qiao sisters and Zhen Ji, and will also
include characters that will be added in future games like Himiko, Mei
Sanninang, and Liu Bei's wives Lady Mi and Lady Gan!

They are also making Dynasty Warriors - X-2, with Zhen Ji as the main
character. The plot is you go in search of your husband, Cao Pi, in secret
by taking some very scanty clothes from your crossdressing friend Sima Yi
and taking a few revolvers designed by Zhuge Liang run by gunpowder, and
start kicking ass all over China!

And if you actually believed any of the above, man you are gullible. April
Fools! =D

The actual updates are as follows: Updates to Stage Flowchart and a little
error fix in section 6, as well as a few additions and tips in section 7.
1/27/2003 - Started on this guide.
1/28/2003 - Updated. Added info on Costumes and the Lightning Orb.

2) About Zhuge Liang

Zhuge Liang is the Prime Minister of the Shu-Han kingdom. He is also
known as his style name 'Kongming', or his other name 'Sleeping Dragon.'
His parents had died when he was a child, and he moved in with his
uncle. He went to the southern China and became a subsistence farmer. A
very intelligent man, he made good friends, including a person named Xu
Shu. One day Xu visited Zhuge, and told him the general Liu Bei was
coming to visit him. Zhuge was angry with Xu, and Xu left in shame. Liu
Bei, with brothers Guan Yu and Zhang Fei went to visit Zhuge Liang
twice, but he was never home. For the third time, Liu caught Zhuge
sleeping. Zhuge awoke and dressed to greet Liu, and he gave him some
advice. Liu asked Zhuge to join him in his quest to unify China under
the Han dynasty, which had fallen. After a time, Zhuge decided to join
Liu. Zhuge proved to be a very useful asset to Liu Bei as a military,
political, and civil advisor. When Liu formed the Shu-Han kingdom, Zhuge
Liang eventually became the prime minister of Shu-Han. He wrote essays
on generalship and his own treatise on war.

Zhuge Liang died of fatigue at Wu Zhang Plains before he could fight
Wei, at the age of 54. He was buried honorably. His war treatise has
been lost, but his essays on generalship have been preserved as a
compilation known as 'The Way of The General,' which is compiled with
another work in the book 'Mastering The Art of War.'

People might say that Zhuge Liang is overrated in the novel. Sure, that
may be true in a sense. The historical novel known as The Romance of the
Three Kingdoms by Luo Guangzhong, added many things to make Zhuge
Liang's history seem more colorful and mystical, like Zhuge Liang's
summoning of the wind at Chi Bi. In truth, that didn't happen, as did
quite a few other of his mystic achievements. As I said, Luo Guangzhong
added these in. Yet you cannot deny that Zhuge Liang was indeed an
intelligent and capable man. He served Shu well, and most of his more
realistic achievements are quite true, such as the Empty City ruse and
the Statue ruse at Wu Zhang Plains, where he fooled Sima Yi from the
grave into thinking he was alive by having a statue of him shown at the
battlefield.
-----------------------------------------------------------
3) From Dynasty Warriors 3 to Dynasty Warriors 4

How much did Zhuge Liang change in Dynasty Warriors 4? Allow me to say
that he's changed a lot. There are just so many weaknesses that he had
from before, that were removed, that he became from an expert character
to... quite good.

- Zhuge Liang's Musou Can Combo Easily

A problem that most people had when playing Zhuge Liang was that they
could not combo his Musou well. Well, honestly, it did get easier. His
Musou's lasers did get bigger in both width and largeness, making it
far easier to hit. His lasers are also consistent, quick, and
well-timed in DW4. All you have to do to keep comboing with the Musou is
just to aim at people. It's got a bit more range, too.

- Zhuge Liang Can Connect With His Juggle

But it won't do him much good. It's impossible to keep rejuggling the
enemy as they'll keep recovering. Still, juggling gives you some weapon
experience so it's all good.

- Zhuge Liang Starts Out With Very Balanced Stats

Zhuge's beginning strengths are quite impressive. He starts out with
an excellent Defense, good Running Speed and Musou Bar, and has average
Attack. He jumps pretty high as well. These are quite good to start out
with. His weakness of HP is negated by his great Defense, and you'll
probably be able to do without his horrendous Bow Attack. There is his
small Range, but you won't be needing that much at the beginning. His
attacks come out pretty quick and he has his SSST for dealing with
crowds.

- Zhuge Liang Can Get Six Item Slots

Zhuge Liang, being one of the smartest characters in Dynasty Warriors,
gets the advantage of having the highest amount of item slots that one
can have -- 6. This is good -- it allows you to equip more stuff.
-----------------------------------------------------------
4) Character Stats

Dynasty Warriors 4 has a lot of different character stats. Here are
definitions for each of them.

A. Attack
Attack is the amount of attack power that a character has.
B. Defense
Defense limits the damage done to a character.
C. Musou
Musou stats gauge how long your Musou bar is.
D. HP
HP or Life stats are how long your life bar is.
E. Bow Attack/Defense
Bow Attack increases your arrow attack power, while defense increase
your durability to arrow attacks.
F. Mounted Attack/Defense
Mounted Attack and Defense increase your mounted attack power and
increase your durability on horses respectively.
G. Musou Charge
Musou Charge increases your ability to charge up your Musou while
getting hit, attacking, or charging up using circle.
H. Luck
Luck increases your ability to get meatbun, war-god axe, and armor
items.
I. Jump
Jump increases your maximum jumping altitude.
J. Reach
Reach increases the range of your attacks.
K. Speed
Speed is how fast you run.
-----------------------------------------------------------
5) Orbs

Orbs are a fun new feature in Dynasty Warriors 4, allowing any character
to make use of any Element in the game. You must have full Musou to make
use of an Orb, unless you have a 10th Weapon which removes this
requirement.

A. Fire Orb
Sets the enemy on fire. Those on fire will receive extra damage.
B. Lightning Orb
Adds lightning to your attacks. Enemies hit by lightning will hurt other
nearby enemies when they hit the ground.
C. Vorpal Orb
Instantly kills enemy soldiers and does a set amount of damage against
enemy generals.
D. Ice Orb
Freezes the enemy. Enemies will be frozen if hit for a time.
E. Blast Orb
Deals out more damage, and enemies will still take damage even when they
are blocking.
F. Poison Orb
When enemies are poisoned with this Orb, they will take more damage when
you attack them rather than if they were not poisoned.
-----------------------------------------------------------
6) Why Use Zhuge Liang?

Zhuge Liang is a very good character with solid crowd control that's been
around ever since the old games. He's generally good in most stats and
abilities, and he's got great dueling power with his SST. He's good if you
want a unique character that has many good traits but requires a bit of
expertise due to range.
-----------------------------------------------------------
7) Moves, 10th Weapon Acquiration, and Costumes

Moves Key:
S - Square
T- Triangle
Regular Attack - S's

Regular Attack: Zhuge Liang's regular attack is focused mainly in front
of him, though I think he hits behind himself a little more. It's still
difficult to defend your back by just using this.

Jump Attack: Zhuge jumps up and thrusts his fan in a downward front
slash.

Mounted Attack/Musou: Zhuge throws his fan into a near 180 degrees wave
in front of him - continuously with the Musou version.

Dash Attack: Zhuge throws his fan into a straight, linear direction
forward twirlng, then the fan returns to him. It has more range this
time around.

Air Charge (Jump, then T): Zhuge Liang jumps up a little and quickly
throws a laser in front of him, damaging everyone in a good radius.

T: Zhuge throws a little magic bolt at the enemy. It levels up in range
and damage as you increase your rank, and more appear. They'll get bigger
as well.

ST: Zhuge's first launcher combo. He throws the fan up into the air to
hit the enemy. Easy to juggle with this time around.

SST: Zhuge's Charge Rush. Zhuge creates a circle of magic in front of him
which breaks the enemy's guard.

SSST: Zhuge's fan goes around him in a circle and it shows him surrounded
by a blue field, though that's just for special effect. The move no
longer has knockback collision.

SSSST: Zhuge's second launcher. He puts his fan forward and thrusts it
vertically into the air. Easier to combo with this time around.

SSSSST: Zhuge fires three lasers to his right, forward, and left
respectively. The lasers have gotten bigger so it's easier to hit with.

Musou: Zhuge starts firing three lasers simultaneously, homing in on an
enemy and constantly comboing if you keep it on the same enemy. All of
the lasers have gotten bigger. Has some more power, too.

Using the Lightning Orb: With his 10th Weapon, Zhuge Liang can make use of
the Lightning Orb on his T, ST, and SSSST Charges. To activate it on the
rest, you must still have your Musou maxed.

10th Weapon Information:
The 10th Weapons don't come with as much fanfare as the 4th and 5th
weapons do. They no longer come with an Element attached. That's what the
Orbs are for. They lack special stats, too -- the only advantage that the
10th Weapon has for the 9th Weapon is that the 10th Weapon has some extra
attack on it, as well as allowing the character to make use of the Orb
they're using without having a full Musou.

10th Weapon: Peacock Feather
+50 Attack

How to get his 10th Weapon:
Stage - The Battle of Wu Zhang Plains, Must be in Musou Mode
Method - To get the 10th Weapon, you must first beat Jie Ting, and then
play Wu Zhang Plains. In this stage, you must go all the way left, then
turn up and meet up with Zhang He -- you'll meet up with a lot of archers,
but the Arbalest will appear and get rid of all of them. Then, defeat
Zhang He. Afterwards, approach Sima Yi's camp and activate the taunting
event. Then, wait around for a Supply troop bringing provisions from Jie
Ting to appear. Soon Xiahou Dun will also come. Defeat him, and bring the
Supply troop safely to the main camp. You will receive Zhuge Liang's
ultimate weapon, the Peacock Feather.

I got this method from Muni, so thank Muni, not me. In fact, you should've
looked at Muni's FAQ for 10th Weapon methods, not here.

There is a popular trick to getting tenth weapons. Pick the person you
want to get the fourth weapon in one of the player slots. Pick a maxed
out, powerful character in the other slot. Then, fulfill the
requirements needed to get the fourth weapon with the maxed out
character, and get the weapon. Afterwards complete the level. It might not
work depending on the requirement, though.

Costumes:
1) Beginning costume.
2) All black version of beginning costume. He looks like the Chinese
version of a Black Mage.
3) Beginning costume, but with a gold hat. Looks kinda evil.
4) Black beginning costume, with a gold hat. Looks very evil.
5) Original DW2 and DW3 Costume.
6) Purple version of Original DW2 and DW3 Costume. My favorite out of all
of them.
-----------------------------------------------------------
8) Overview and Character Strategy

Zhuge Liang's gotten so much better ever since DW3. He's got great combo
ability. A good combo against a general would be a full SSSSSS, and then
do a Musou attack on them, making sure that you're staying on them. Just
remember not to be thrown off the bounce that the general does when they
keep getting hit by the Musou. This is actually put there by Koei to help
you combo with it. Just make sure that you are focusing on the general.
It does quite some damage. His Air Charge can sorta help to combo as
well.

Many of his moveset's strengths have remained the same. His SSST is still
great for crowd clearing. You may think that the removal of the knockback
collision is a bad thing, but it's actually good for you. You no longer
kill your bodyguards by constantly knocking enemy soldiers into them this
way.

His SSSSST is still quite the damaging combo, though you might still have
some problems connecting the lasers. Zhuge's SSST might still be hard to
pull off when totally surrounded, though improved allied and Bodyguard
AI help offset this a bit. You probably won't have anymore problems
connecting at least the ST of his launchers.

He has many new strengths. His revamped Musou has already been described
earlier. His SST is just plain awesome. You'll probably be using this
a lot against Generals due to it's connectable guard-break attack. Even
though it never changes, it's always useful. You can almost guarantee
that you'll win most duels with this move. His Air Charge is great, as it
is a cheap, effective way to create some breathing space for you with
it's wonderful radius. It comes out very quickly, and you probably won't
get knocked out of doing it because he jumps a little before firing the
laser.

Zhuge's balanced stats make him quite good. He's still the man for you if
you want a turtle that can take a beating. He could probably be a great
Horseback fighter with the Shadow Runner and some Mounted Items due to
his ability to combo and hit a lot of people in front of him on horse.
Zhuge can still get out of tight situations easily with his speed and
jumping capability. The only problem with Zhuge Liang is range, but you
can probably get skilled enough with him enough that you can live with
it.

Of the Lightning Orb: You know Zhuge Liang's T Charge magic bolts? They
may seem useless, but when you increase Zhuge Liang's rank they get much
better. In fact, if you equip the Lightning Orb, his T Charge is awesome.
This is because at highest rank, Zhuge Liang fires three bolts. These
bolts in turn hit two people, or all three might hit one (for very good
damage), then the lightning hits three or four people around them. This is
enough of an area of effect to be useful for decimating crowds. It also
does some good damage towards generals. Try doing his SST to guard-break
the general in a duel, then doing the T Charge. I can take out people
quick with that. But don't expect to use it much in battles with generals
where soldiers are out -- you probably will not end up having enough room
to pull off the SST then doing T.

Of the Poison Orb: I find that the Poison Orb semi-solves Zhuge's lack of
good power, but I think that you'll find the Lightning Orb to be far more
useful.

Having a Full Musou: This can actually be a disadvantage! I sometimes have
this problem where I try to guard-break an enemy general, but instead if I
have the Lightning Orb and a Full Musou Bar the lightning will take effect
instead and the enemy general will still tend up blocking, and I'll also
be left open. Still, there's two sides to this. The lightning, strangely,
doesn't take effect on the SST, SSST, and SSSSST, but it does when you have
Full Musou. As I said, it can be an advantage on the SST, but on the SSST,
Zhuge's trademark crowd-clear/control move, the lightning really helps for
that function.

So the lesson is if you're trying to beat down on an enemy general it's
best to just use your Musou instead of keeping it filled to make use of
lightning attacks. However if you're having too much trouble with the
enemy troops then simply abuse his SSST, though his regular T is also good
for this.

In a nutshell, the Pros and Cons of Zhuge Liang:

Pros
- Balanced starting stats
- Good crowd control especially with Lightning Orb
- An awesome duelist with SST
- Great, cool-looking Musou
- Lots of room for whatever you want to equip

Cons
- Range
- SSSST doesn't connect well

Recommended Equipment:
Shadow Runner (Cannot Be Knocked Off Horse) or Red Hare (Fastest Horse)
Lightning Orb (Watching Fireworks and Clearing Crowds!)
Tortoise Amulet (+ Defense)
Tiger Amulet (+ Attack)
Peacock Urn (+ Life)
Nanman Armor (+ Bow Defense)
Wind Scroll (+ Range)
Elixir (+Musou Charge)

Recommended Equipment if Fighting Mainly on Horseback:
Switch Tortoise Amulet with Cavalry Armor (+ Mounted Defense)
Switch Tiger Amulet with Horned Amulet (+ Mounted Attack)
-----------------------------------------------------------
9) Beating Lu Bu

Lu Bu seems impossible to beat... But is it impossible? It is in fact
quite easy to beat Lu Bu with Zhuge Liang, but only on the battlefield.
You probably won't be able to kill him fast enough in a duel. The trick
to defeating Lu Bu is to keep using your Air Charge on him. The computer
AI is so stupid that it never blocks. In this way you can keep hitting
him and hitting him for solid draining damage. He'll eventually falter.
If you need to get rid of his guards, try to lead him away from them.
Better would be leading the guards into your own Bodyguards.
