I. FAQ Info

Project .hack continues in more ways than one.  The four-part series known as
.hack//I.M.O.Q. is being covered by yours truly in its entirety.  I mean for
this to be a consistent and fully detailed enough where you can follow all four
volumes from start to finish.

//Mutation is the second volume of this quadrilogy (let's pretend that's a real
word).  Just like how I wrote the guides for the G.U. trilogy, this guide will
assume you have followed my guidance through the previous volume (//Infection)
and are using the Convert option on the Clear Data.  If not, then no worries.
The gameplay shouldn't change too much until I call for using Gardenia or
Sanjuro since they're extra characters from Volume 1.  I aim to make this game
as easy for you as possible, but feel free to add as much difficulty as you
would prefer.

II. Controls

Please read the manual if you've a copy of it.  Otherwise:


GP - Game currency.  You need this to buy stuff.

Exp - Experience.  It takes 1000 experience to get from one level to the next.
     The higher you get, the less Exp a monster will be worth until either you
     hit max level or until the monster you're comparing is worth 1 EXP a kill.

Lv - Level.  The max is 99, though we'll see as high as 50-52 by the end of the
     second volume.  Maybe higher if you're patient enough.

Party - You play mainly as Kite.  As you gain Member Addresses, you can invite
     up to two more people at a time if they are available.

Desktop - This game has two modes.  One is the main where you walk around and
     interact with other characters in a simulated MMORPG called The World.
     The other is the desktop, which is like a big menu full of options for you
     to explore.  This provides a number of things to help play the game.

Affection - Capped at 500 in Volume 2, this measures how much a character will
     like Kite.  However, unlike in G.U., this will only affect the Ryu Books
     instead of leading to a big event in the end.  Of course, it affects the
     email chains you get from Kite's friends as well.  Higher affection will
     allow for newer messages to appear as long as there are messages to be

HP - The health your characters have.  It's Game Over if everyone is dead.

SP - Skill Points.  The more you have, the more often you can use skills.

Attack - Your attacks' damage is based on this.

Defense - Your ability to resist attacks is based on this.

Accuracy - Your ability to hit the target, obviously.

Evade - Raising this increases your chance to be missed by an enemy's attack.

   * Attack, Defense, Accuracy, and Evade each have two listings.  The first
          is the Physical, and the second is the Magical.  So, if you have 99
          Physical Defense but like 1 Magical Defense, and a spell comes your
          way, then you can count on it doing damage to you big time.  That is,
          unless your stat for that spell's Element is high enough.

Element - Fire, Water, Earth, Wood, Thunder, Darkness, Spirit, and Body.  The
     six excluding Body and Spirit are how efficient your attacks and defenses
     are in those elements.  This will come in VERY handy this game.  Body and
     Spirit will reduce your chances of being inflicted with status effects,
     but will not make you immune.  The said effects (below) are split between
     physical and mind based, and thus call for one of two items typically.

Curse - Depletes HP gradually; calls for Restorative

Poison - Depletes HP over time; Calls for Antidote

Sleep - Immobilizes you; calls for Restorative

Paralysis - Immobilizes you; calls for Antidote

Charm - Attack allies for a time; calls for Restorative

Confusion - Attack allies for a time; calls for Restorative

Speed Down - Slows your movement; calls for Antidote or waiting a few seconds.
     The other stats have their own versions of this as well.  Physical stats
     can be cured with Antidote or beaten with a boost of the same stat.  The
     Magic stats call for Restorative or the temp stat boost.

Areas - Almost all areas in these four games are made up of a field and dungeon
     together.  Depending on the server and the three words put in, you can
     choose the element and average level of monsters you encounter.  The areas
     to do with story are pre-chosen, and I'll add some to help with finding
     items and monsters.

Server - This series' idea of a server is one of five roots to the many areas.
     In //Mutation, we have Delta, Theta, and Lambda servers.

Save/Load - Through Data Manager or a Save Shop in a town, you can save a file
     of your progress on a memory card.  Use this file to load and continue
     your progress.

Convert - As of Mutation, when you turn on the game, you will see an option for
     converting data from the previous volume.  This allows for all characters,
     levels, and items to be transferred over.  As I said before, this guide
     will assume that you converted the Clear Data from //Infection.

-------------Movement and Interaction-------------

Walk/Run - Use the left analog stick.  Tilting it lightly causes slow motion.

Examining/Selecting - X button.  This only works if something to examine is
     within range, or if there is a choice to be made.  Don't ask why you can't
     talk to an NPC on the other side of town when you aren't moving.

Trapped Chests - These are the blue chests with random effects if you just open
     them.  You don't get the better item that way.  Carry Fortune Wires for a
     few of these, though it won't be TOTALLY necessary until an event at the
     end of QUARANTINE.

Target Toggling - When multiple targets are in range use the digital pad to
     switch from target to target.

Cancel - Circle button.  You do this to exit out of menus and such.

Camera Angles - L1 turns to look left, R1 turns to look right.  The R3 (right
     analog stick) can zoom in or out.  R2 resets the camera to default, and L2
     toggles between 3rd person and 1st person views.  This is important.  If
     you never adjust the view, then you won't be able to target a monster just
     because it's not on the screen (mainly with skills).

-------------Menus and Such-------------

Open a Menu - Triangle button.  This works as long as you are walking around in
     a town, a field, a dungeon, or in a battle (not when you're being flung
     around or doing an attack).  If you're in a menu, this won't work, so do
     not ask why you can't open the main menu while in the middle of a trade.

Item Info - When you are highlighted over an item, press the Square button to
     receive info about that item.

Store Menu - Talk to the NPC or character running the store, press X, and then
     select to view their wares.  You will see price amounts.  If you have the
     money to pay for the item you want, then press X while highlighting that
     same item.

Item/Option Highlighting - Move either the left analog stick or the digital pad
     in the direction it takes to get from option to option.

Chat Command Menu - When in an area, press Square.  It's through this menu you
     can select specific skills and strategies from your party members.

Chaos Gate Menu - While in a town, examine the Chaos gate.  Select Warp Menu to
     see a bunch of options.  If you already have an area bookmarked from the
     boards, emails, or story events, you can select the area from the Word
     List.  Warp History lists all areas manually or randomly visited in order
     from the most recent on earlier without repeating any areas.  Random will
     pull randomly from your pool of keywords.  New Keyword allows you to do
     what Random does, but manually.  There are three pools:
         -1st Word         -2nd Word         -3rd Word
   * The server you're on comes into play as well as these will alter the range
          of levels your Word pool is likely to play with.  This will not be
          absolute, but it's the general rule.

Gate Hacking - When it comes to areas to do with the story progression, there
     will be SOME instances where you will require Virus Cores to unlock the
     area.  Some Data Bugs as bosses will provide what you need, and sometimes
     you'll receive a Virus Core through Email or someone handing one to you.
     Virus Cores A through L have to be gained through Data Draining enemies
     other than the predetermined bosses.
        * A-C: Delta/Theta        * D-F: Lambda at lv. 31+
        * G-I: See Outbreak       * J-L: See Quarantine
     As for the Gate Hacking process . . . You will see a big screen with a
     cross on the left side and a list of the Virus Cores you got on the right.
     You can turn the cross clockwise by tapping left on your d-pad, and you
     can turn it the other way by tapping right.  When a side of the cross is
     pointing down that has holes in it, you will see a letter (the type of
     Virus Core needed) and a number next to it (the number needed).  You add
     the Virus Cores by tapping up on the d-pad until the holes are filled.
     They can be subtracted as well, but that's kinda useless.  Once all the
     holes are filled, you can press X to permanently open the area.
   * During each walkthrough, I will suggest how many Virus Cores to try and
          get AT MINIMUM while you are fighting the monsters regularly.  While
          this might slow the Exp. growth just a little, it will help in the
          long run to have what you need before you need it.  You don't want to
          be level 80 or higher and trying to get Virus Cores A-C.  You also
          don't want to drop your game progression to find more Virus Cores.
   * Over the course of Volume 2, I suggest getting a minimum of 6 Virus Core
          D's, 15 E's, and 9 F's.  Extras will carry on and likely be used in
          one of the following volumes.  In fact, if you converted your clear
          data from //Infection, then you should have enough A's, B's, and C's.
   * If you're using a cheat device to always have Virus Cores, then only use
          Cores A-L unless the game has given you the other ones you'll need.
          For those of you who don't: kudos.  The cheat won't be needed.

Trade - Talk to a character either walking around or that is in your party.  

Gift - You can select Trade with your party members.  This has no Trade window,
     but you do see your own list of items as to what you wish to give.  This
     helps in the affection level just a bit.  Don't try giving multiple items
     at once, because it'll just be counted as one item.

Rarity - Items are marked for their rarity.  Most of the time, you will just
     want to put these in storage.  I'll note when they have their use.

Equipment - Weapon, head armor, body armor, wrist guards, and shoes.  You can
     only equip a weapon specific to your class, and any defensive piece as
     long your class isn't excluded.

Map - In the top-right corner of the screen, you can see the map of where you
     stand.  In town, a dungeon block, or a grove, you will have the option of
     having the map up when you are not in battle, or you can toggle it off by
     pressing Select.  In fields other than groves, there's a little more to
     the map.  You see, other than the typical field, you have just the one map
     size.  With the fields, however, you can toggle between Default Map, no
     map, and Overall Map.  Overall Map is good for seeing where the portals,
     dungeon, and Spring of Myst can be found, whereas the Default Map lets you
     see the formations where you could find Symbols or grunty food.

-------------About Battles-------------

Yay, they're not random.  The battles are in set places, though you COULD be
attacked by wandering monsters on the field.  In a dungeon, you cannot leave a
room with any monsters in it still alive because the doors stay closed until
you are victorious.

   * TIP: Sometimes, on a field, you will see two portals too close together
          for comfort.  The way around this is to get close enough to one to
          activate it, and then run away from it just far enough to separate
          enemy party from additional opposition.  I hope this helps you.

Attack - Press X like you're interacting with an object or a character.  You
     attack with Twin Blades, and can keep doing so repeatedly.

Game Over - When you run out of health, you have to start over from the last
     place you saved.  Game Over also occurs if your Infection from Data Drain
     reaches 100%.

Items/Spells - To use these in battle, you must open the main menu and select
     what you want to use from there.  The skills and spells are all separated
     into different tabs, with the last being for your Data Drain.  Items also
     are separated into tabs.  When in battle, you'll likely be using them from
     the first two tabs.  Beyond that, you'd have to go into Equipment to fix
     whatever weapon you have equipped depending on what a battle's strategy
     may call for.  But, I will cover this when it comes up.

Strategy - This one is a little more complex than it needs to be, and it could
     get you into trouble if you leave it alone.  First, you have to set the
     battle formation, which will very likely switch between Wonder Battle and
     Union Battle most of the time.  Second, DURING combat you can shout to one
     party member to do first aid through the fight or to do a designated skill
     one time.  You can also have that specific character change equipment as
     long they are carrying alternative stuff, which YOU have to give them.

Data Drain Infection - As you Data Drain enemies, your infection level will
     rise.  The higher in level you are compared to the monster, the less you
     will get infected from one use.  As you gain other forms of Data Drain,
     you should note that the original Data Drain infects Kite less than the
     others.  An email from Helba claims that the less infected you are, the
     easier it will be to get a Virus Core from most monsters, but I have yet
     to confirm this.  To bring DOWN infection, Kite must physically attack
     some monsters and DEAL THE KILLING BLOW.  The way you can check the level
     of infection is the silhouette image that appears next to the skill tab
     for the Data Drain skills.  You won't see the exact percent of infection,
     but you will see colors in that silhouette to give an idea of where you
     are.  They are as follows:
        * White  - 0% to 24%        * Blue   - 25% to 49%
        * Green  - 50% to 74%       * Yellow - 75% to 98%
        * Orange - 99%              * Red    - 100%; GAME OVER
   * Maybe it's my screen, but I've never been able to see a difference between
          the white and blue levels.  Either that, or the blue looks green ONLY
          on the Infection Status Window.

III. Entity's Corner

It started with a woman who decided to write an epic poem, but she never got to
finish it.  A programmer who knew her decided to make a virtual world to depict
this poem, and FRAGMENT was born with a hidden purpose within it.

Soon after, FRAGMENT was revised to The World, and all was well in the public
eye.  But, some individuals found out differently, and two heroes of a major
event dared to investigate.  One dared as well to invite a real life friend to
play this game with him.

This was Kite.

In their first trip together, Orca did teach Kite how to play his favorite game
just before things went wrong.  Orca's player fell into a coma in the living
world, and Kite's true adventure began.  BlackRose, a middle school girl in a
search for answers to why her own brother fell into a coma, teamed up with Kite
as they both met many people . . . some knowing something is wrong, and some
ignorant of it all.  Finally, Kite had a showdown with the monster responsible
for Orca's coma, but the monster's defeat was just the beginning.

IV. Walkthrough

   * For the purpose of this guide (A) will be Delta, and (8) will be Theta.
          (^) will stand for Lambda.  Please do not confuse it for Delta's (A).
          These are to help you know which server we're on.
   * Also, I will provide SOME maps.  Here's the key for most of them:
          =  Pathway between east and west
          I  Pathway between north and south, or else a weird wall
          M  Magic Portal (monster or chest spawn point)
          B  Boss
          c  Treasure Chest; CAPS for 2+
          T  Gott Statue and main chest of dungeon
          k  Destructible items (ie., skeletons, boxes, etc.,); CAPS for 2+
          P  Random buff Symbol found in dungeon map
          g  Grunty Food; CAPS for 2+
          u  Way up in dungeons
          d  Way down in dungeons (or into dungeons in groves)
          @  Spring of Myst in a grove
          ^  Space, nothingness, or even a special boss when noted as such

-------------Encountering Misleading Deceit-------------

                ~~Part 1: Back for Seconds~~

If you wan to, you can skip the first couple scenes by pressing start during
each one.  Either way, you will appear on the desktop.  For those of you just
now joining in on .hack, this is the game's simulation of real world activity.
Here, you can read up on News, read and reply to Emails, play with features you
gain via Ryu Books and other events, Save your game, or load up The World--the
online game that .hack's story takes place--to either read messages at a forum
or "Log In" to the main game.  You catch all that?

          You don't really gain anything here, but there will be an article
               about a professor claiming game-inflicted comas are impossible.
          BlackRose - Reply with "I hope so" regardless if you played the last
               volume or not.
          Natsume - If you followed my Volume 1 guide, then you brought her
               with you to the battle against Skeith.  This isn't part of the
               email chain, and this isn't limited to Natsume, only to whoever
               you brought with to the Skeith fight.  Answer with the better of
               the responses you are given to choose from.  For Natsume, I'm
               quite sure that is, "Let's try our best"
          CC Corporation sends two messages regarding Grunty races.  I'll cover
               this soon enough.  Just be sure to collect food like crazy so
               you can get all the needed grunties on Theta and Lambda.  No,
               that doesn't mean we have access to Lambda just yet.  Of course,
               one of these messages comes to you if you already have all three
               grunties on one server (Theta).
          If you're like me, you would select and back out of every message so
               this would no longer read as having anything new.  But, I do
               advise reading in "ALTIMIT" about the reference to Pluto's Kiss.

Log in.  You SHOULD be in the Theta server already.

BlackRose is waiting for Kite.  She's wanting to go back to the place that the
monster Skeith was fought.  You should have enough items on you.  Use your menu
in town to invite BlackRose.  Everyone else is unavailable right now.  Examine
the Chaos Gate, select Word List, and then select the destination.

Coming from the previous volume, your levels will be 33-34, and you should have
the weapons Bom-Ba-Ye and Sakabatou equipped.  That makes the field easy enough
to clear all the magic portals.  The Exp won't be much, but feel free whether
or not to clear it.  Enter the dungeon when you are ready.  It's where the red
arrow is on the map.

Go ahead and cast Ap Do since Kite should have the Time Sandals equipped.  Kite
is the only one who'll need it right now.  As you can see from my maps, the
monsters are all gone.  The treasures and grunty foods, however, are not.  You
can use storage rooms, or those like in the northeast corner of Block 1, to
break those boxes and barrels to restock on some items.  You can find Well
Water in this area.  Start saving up.

possible to win against Skeith if it were still there.  I do suggest grabbing
the Golden Egg near the storage room to the northwest.  You'll need a bunch of
them not too far from now.

BlackRose and Kite share a moment of being afraid, but they can't back out now.
Make your way through this block to the stairs heading down.

Go north a room for a slightly comical scene.  It gets more serious as Kite
asks BlackRose why she's doing this.  Balmung shows up.  He leaves wondering
why things get worse with you around.  Continue forward a room to see another
short scene.  The smoking doorway is now just gated off.  you'll leave the area

An admin in the form of a shop keep will show up.  He wants to switch out the
item you got in Volume 1 for the correct one.  It still doesn't seem to work.
So you know now, it's not what the admins claim it to be either.  BlackRose
even asks what the Power Up Campaign is since she never heard of it.  Alright,
you are done here.  Log out.

          Oh, look, a scrambled message from Aura.  I can translate MOST of it
               for you: "Skeith has divided me into segments. To limit me. I
               must merge to be born. Find the stored segment.  Please.  You
               are the only one I can count on."  Just how does she still send
               you messages when scattered into three places?
          An anonymous contact summons you to (8) Soaring Sky Bounded Abyss.

There's no need to do anything else.

 (8) Soaring Sky Bounded Abyss--

Enjoy the big scene.  BlackRose is there as well.  Helba will save Kite and
BlackRose from deletion by Lios, and she'll refer to the items Book of Law and
Book of Absolution, which were previous attempts to have Kite deleted.  She'll
refer also to the Epitaph of Twilight before suggesting that Lios watches Kite
and BlackRose for a time.

                ~~Part 2: Bigfoot?  No, It's a Big Step~~

The news is worth a laugh, sometimes.

          Lios will explain about the five servers, and Lambda will be unlocked
               for use.  He also will summon you to a shop to talk to him.
          Everyone whose affection is 250 or higher, except for Mia or Elk,
               will begin their email chains for Volume 2.  I'll detail the
               responses later in this guide.  (See: "Tracks of the Past")

Access the Chaos Gate to switch to the new server.

 Carmina Gadelica--

Nice place, huh?  Feel free to walk around and talk to the people who are also
running around town.  Talk to the Weapon Shop NPC to contact Lios.  He will
try to make you his errand boy who just investigates stuff.  You'll get a Virus
Core P which the admins managed to extract from a data bug.  Time to log out.

          Helba explains how to get Virus Cores D, E, and F.  The monsters must
               be on Lambda and over level 30.
          Gardenia graces us with an invite.  (^) Quiet Oblivious Cabbage
          "Let's Play Tag Take 2" begins this volume's round of tag matches.
               The keywords to the area for match #1 are (^) Detestable
               Vengeful Sunny Demon
          "Nuke Usagimaru Show" invites everyone to come alone to see him put
               on a show at (^) Lightless Distant Dead Lands
          "Trading Convention" gives us (^) Collapsed Pagan Remains.
          "Is This an Event Character?" has our next story area at (^) Dolorous
               Evil Eyed Widow

Nuke and Rachel are both side characters introduced by this volume just like
Gardenia was in //Infection.  They both have a tendency to run bad shows, and
yet they hook up in seven years to make a successful show outside The World.
Go figure.

 Carmina Gadelica--

You are greeted by Elk and a broken Mia.  Her ability to talk has been acting
weird ever since we beat up Skeith.  Mia and Elk were on their way as well to
the protected area from the board.  Before we invite them, let's do some stuff.

The first thing I always like to knock out is the Golden Goblin challenge when
one is listed.  So, with your Time Sandals equipped (otherwise bring a Speed
Charm), bring yourself Hunter Bloods and Warrior Bloods before going to this
game of tag.  Also be sure to have a Bom-Ba-Ye equipped; it can be Data Drained
from a Mu Guardian if you don't have one.  We must do these next two areas with
no party.

 (^) Detestable Vengeful Sunny Demon--

Stehoney awaits your arrival.

Rec.Lvl: 34

Pop those blood items, use Ap Do, and start running.  It may help to zoom out.
When you go after Stehoney, try to predict where he'll be as he turns.  Once
you are close, hit him once or twice.  Unlike the last game, he won't stay
still for the duration of skills.  Lather, rinse, and repeat until Stehoney's
HP hits 0.  You should only need to use the blood items once each, but be ready
for a second dose just in case.

You will get a Goblin Cap A.  That goes into storage when we return to town.
***End of Battle***

As you noticed from running around, there are lots of Oh No Melons and quite a
few Symbols--small flames that provide random buffs when activated--on this
field.  I highly recommend gathering some of these grunty foods when the battle
is over.  Gate out when you're done.

Before we do the next area, I suggest raising a grunty at the ranch in the
southwest corner of town.  Unlike in Theta server, Lambda's grunties require a
size of 40 points to reach an adult.  Hopefully, you have a bunch of food left
over from //Infection, or else I suggest going back to pick up a bunch.  Just
20 Eggs or 40 of anything else will do the job in getting you a Noble Grunty.
With the Noble Grunty ready on Lambda, save your game.  Remember, no party.

Bring plenty of Healing Potions and both Earth and Wood spell scrolls, too.

From the start, cast Ap Do on Kite, and then run north to get a scene.  Nuke is
trying to be a comedian, but everyone leaves except for Kite.  Nuke runs off
saying the show's to continue on the third block.  Go after him.  You will have
to fight on the way.  Mu Guardians are weak to Wood, so bring them down first
with those spell scrolls.  Keep yourself healed, and take out the Mystery Rocks
with your attacks.  If you didn't do it before, Data Drain them for a Phoenix
Wing for Mia, but do keep your infection level down.  If you want to clear the
dungeon, then you'll have to take out the portal to the east.  If not, go to
the stairs to the northwest.

   * Your first Data Drain or two in this volume should give you the ability
          Drain Arc.  It'll be rare that you can even use it, so don't worry
          too much about it.
   * Use the storage rooms to fill up on Healing Potions and Burning Oils.  You
          will need the latter for trade.

Phoenix Queens like to evade your physical attacks.  Use Earth spell scrolls on
them to make this go easy enough on yourself.  If you're just passing through,
like I recommend since Kite is going solo, then there is only one portal you
have to deal with on this block.  The rooms with two portals each can be a bit
of a doozy.  Your choice.  In the second last room, you will spot Moonstone
right before he warps out.  To my understanding, the Moonstone sightings are
necessary to unlock him.

The third block has only the boss for the monster.  Also, the only forks on the
way to the northernmost room are all short and lead to treasure.  Get to the
end to find Nuke.  He'll be fighting the boss.  We have to help him.

Now that we have a full party, let's be sure to clear both the field and the
dungeon.  The monsters shouldn't be hard this way, even if they're all new.
Smiley Rays are big enough to Data Drain a Virus Core F from them.  They are
also weak to Fire.  So, only Data Drain once every two or three battles, and be
sure Kite gets in the killing blow using a physical attack.  Hysteria like to
cast spells on you.  Try getting some Virus Core D's from them.  The Virus Core
hunt will begin to get a little painful when you're getting every possible item
EXCEPT the Virus Core through Data Drain.  Still, try to gather what you can.
The extra items can be sold or used for trade.  Death Crane, like a Phoenix
Queen, likes to evade your physical attacks, so save them for when the other
enemies are down.  You can get Virus Core D's from them as well.

In the first big room, you will see what this is about.  Rachel is trying to
arrange for trades between a larger number of people who each wants something
the next person has.  Unfortunately, we're one item short, and it should be in
the dungeon.  TO THE GOTT STATUE!  But, first, let's take out the magic portals
in the west room and the east.  From the east room, go west, north, west again,
and then north to find the stairs.  Don't forget about the storage rooms to get
Well Waters stored up.  Bone Army, by the way, is easy.  Use Thunder Coil to
bring them down fast.  They hit very hard, and you can die very fast from them.

Specters are another monster weak to Thunder.  You can Data Drain a Virus Core
E from one of them.  In these rooms with two portals each, kill the monsters
fast before you even think about using Data Drain.  Take note that this dungeon
is a great source for Golden Eggs.  In the last room before the stairs, you can
encounter Moonstone.  It doesn't matter what order his appearances come, but
they must all happen.

   * Specters also hit hard.  Be careful, and make sure everyone has plenty of
          Resurrects just in case.

Grand Cold is a fast moving magic caster.  They're weak to Fire.  Don't worry
about Data Draining them.  This being your first Gott Statue (east room) of the
second volume, save it for last.  Kill the monsters before going to open that
last chest.  It has a couple Treasure items and the key item Love Archery.

Back in that room with the traders, talk to the blue guy Dick, to trade the
Love Archery for the Paper Cloak; the other blue person Anne to exchange the
Paper Cloak for the Basin Shield; the wavemaster Catherine's Mad Opener gained
by giving the Basin Shield; hand Bate the Mad Opener to receive the Plastic
Sword.  When that's all done, Rachel hands you her Member Address.  You will
leave here automatically.

   * Yes, you have to talk to Rachel after you get the Plastic Sword.
   * Everyone in this party should be level 35 by now.

This is a long chapter, I know.  There's just so much to do before moving on
with the story.  With Gardenia and Mistral still in your party, let's do just
one more side area before we move on.  Be sure you're well stocked on Healing
Potions, Antidotes, and Resurrects.  Bring some The Hanged Man.

reappears here.  They and Armor Evil both hit hard, so set Mistral to heal when
each fight starts.  Worry first about getting leveled to 36 before acquiring
the Virus Cores.  You can probably get a couple E's here.

   * If you see more than one Skate Rat Ark, then Data Drain them to get around
          their resurrections.

The grave-looking Skate Rat Arks take first priority.  Have Mistral kill them
with her strongest Water spells, and be ready to heal her and Gardenia both.
Specter takes second with Kite's Thunder Coil.  If you see more than one Armor
Evil at once, or even one together with Skate Rat Arks, then use The Hanged Man
on one to paralyze it.  The last thing you need is to die or be paralyzed while
just a second from winning a fight.

   * There are a quite a few Grunt Mints here, too.  Pick up all you find.

This floor is very direct.  And, because of that, you will need to watch out
for the fork going east so you can get the Gott Statue BEFORE you go to fight
the boss.  Hackberry Kings are weak to Earth.  They can heal themselves, but
not resurrect.  Kill one fast with the help of any Earth spells Mistral might
have on her.  Inside the Gott Statue's chest is a Golden Helm plus a couple
treasure items.  I won't even bother to cover the "boss" since it's just one
Skate Rat Ark.  Mistral could potentially kill it in one spell.

When the boss is dead, you are returned to town automatically.  You WILL get a
Crystal Stone upon the enemy's defeat, though.

 Carmina Gadelica--

Sell and restock.  Use Ryu Book V to find out who among your friends still has
an affection rating below 250.  Volume 1 characters (minus Mia, Elk, and Orca)
should be first to get to 250.  Give them the Gott Statue treasure items one-
by-one until this is accomplished.  Save some remaining treasure items for Nuke
and Rachel, and again for Piros since they're unavailable at the moment.

   * Leave the Ice Bar in your storage if you have it until you see Panta in
          town.  Trade it with him for a Key Axe, and store the axe.
   * You can use items bought from the store to trade with both Noble Grunties
          for more treasure items.  These items reappear in their inventory
          after returning from an area or another server.  Use this to pick up
          loads of Silver Scarabs for 8 Healing Potions a piece.
   * In case you haven't been already, carry 13+ Fortune Wires every time you
          go to an area that is level 10 or higher.  This little investment can
          go a long way in selling stuff you don't need.
   * There's even more side stuff we could do now, but let's finally go forward
          in the main game.

Invite Elk and Mia.  Save your game.  Be sure you have access to Earth spells.

Book completion.  Grab the Bear Cat Eggs you see.  Watch out for Red Scissors'
Paralysis.  Use the storage rooms to begin filling up on Pure Waters.  Phoenix
Queens are the only reason for the Earth spells.  Take them down fast.  Three
chests share the same room as the stairs going down to the southwest.

Unfortunately, in order to clear this dungeon, we will have to come back after
beating this boss.  Run forward to the boss chamber for the battle to commence.

As you can see, this guy can resist spells.  You have to Data Drain him to make
this Data Bug vulnerable to attack, just like any other Data Bug.  So, set Elk
to First Aid.  While Mia attacks, have Kite alternate between attacks, heals,
and the occasional use of Staccatto.  Keep an eye out for the time to heal, but
ESPECIALLY for the Protection Break.  Use Data Drain to get a Virus Core M.

After the Data Drain, it'll turn into a normal Mu Guardian.  Kick it's butt.

Elk will receive an Aromatic Grass and give it to Mia.  You'll learn that they
just collect the stuff.  Mia will return to normal . . .

As you might have guessed, the areas for the Volume 2 Golden Goblin matches are
similar to the ones in //Infection.  So, if you wanted to, you could go to the
areas early, though the other Golden Goblins won't be there.  The point of it?
To find more grunty foods.

   * Piros, Nuke, and Rachel are now available for gifts.  From here, I will
          assume everyone you have so far but Mia, Elk, Orca  and Moonstone are
          at 250 affection or higher.
   * If Mistral still has a Cougar Bandana, then trade with Snakey Grunty for
          Scarab Earring with 7 Healing Potions, and give that to Mistral.

For the next area, invite Moonstone and one other person.  For the purposes of
this guide, let's go with Mistral.  Bring a bunch of The Hanged Man as well as
recovery items.  This could get rough.  Oh, and bring a Rare weapon other than
what you have equipped.

First thing's first.  Utilize the Spring of Myst.  Typically, you can increase
the level of your weapon or armor as long it's not equipped by following some
system I won't go too far into explaining.  You would have to select "Neither."
However, if you throw in a Rare item, you will get it back PLUS both the Silver
Axe and Golden Axe.  This is why I recommend bringing at least one Rare at all
times from here on out.  Those axes are good for trade.

You will want to use the field to raise Moonstone's level.  Do not use either
Data Drain ability.  Use The Hanged Man on Armor Evils to keep from wasting too
many Resurrects.  IronBall Mania will be a tough one for you since Moonstone
will likely die every other hit.  Keep Mistral on heals unless you are facing
just one paralyzed Armor Evil (then have everyone use skills).  Once the field
is cleared, Moonstone should be level 33.  Head inside, and come back out to
fight just enough battles to get him to 34.  Now for the dungeon.

   * It's only OK to use Data Drain if you fight more than one Skate Rat Ark.
          The Hanged Man works with them as well.

The entire point of this dungeon is to defeat all monsters because Moonstone is
a major training buff (as you will see when his email chain comes around).  The
rooms with the double portals will probably be your biggest pain, especially if
you are up against multiple Armor Evils.  Hysteria likes to appear here.  Use
the breakable objects in hopes of getting more Healing Potions.

The second floor needs no map.  Go north twice from the stairs to find the one
portal on the block, and west from the central room to find the stairs going
down.  To the east is a storage room; the only one in the dungeon.

clear, and the battles all won, you will return to town.  Valkyries appear on
this block.  They should be relatively easy as long other monsters are dead.  A
couple Bloody Eggs can be found on the block, too.  And, no, I didn't forget
to put anything in the north room.  It really is that empty.

Be sure Moonstone's affection is 250 or better.  For the next place, we can
bring any two people who are available.  I like using BlackRose and Mistral.
Restock on recovery items, and sell your junk.  If you followed my instructions
from the last game about saving up the Virus Cores, then you should be ready.
Oh, and be sure you have a way to use Earth spells.

With your party ranging between level 37 and 38, the monsters' challenge will

You will need quite a few of those soon, and the monsters here won't help your
Exp growth too much.  Clearing the field is ultimately optional.  Phalanx is
really easy.  Also, there are Mandragora here.

   * As usual, when you Data Drain a monster, be sure Kite gets in the final
          blow so you can keep the infection down.  In fact, you could get him
          to deal that last hit on all monsters, and just Data Drain one every
          two or three enemies.  It would take adjusting the strategy of each
          fight so BlackRose is attacking something else or is on Standby.
   * If you can get to 6 Virus Core D's, then you're pretty much done with them
          and also the field.  So you know, count on needing 15 E's and 9 F's
          between now and the very end of the four games.  One Virus Core E out
          of that whole bunch will be needed very soon.

to come back after beating the boss if you wish to clear this dungeon.  Enter

Set all to Skills, and immediately Mistral to First Aid.  This way, BlackRose
will be using her skills during the whole fight.  As Kite, you need to aid
Mistral by throwing in the occasional Healing Potion, and then attack between
your own heals until the Protection Break finally happens.  You'll get a Virus
Core N.

Scorpioid wwill remain with 3250 HP.  Bring it down like any other large enemy
that only happens to hit hard.  At level 38, you will receive 80 Exp.

Before we go to this story area, we have a couple quick things to do.  First,
RAISE YOUR THIRD LAMBDA GRUNTY.  I highly recommend having all three at this
point since you are about to be given the best chance possible to do the Flag
Race.  You'll see what I mean after the upcoming boss.  For the Bony Grunty, I
suggest the following recipe:

Congratulations on getting a Bony Grunty.  Trade with him for the Golden Grunty
using 13 Healing Potions, and use it on Kite right away.  Invite BlackRose and
Natsume so we can get both their levels up a little.  Now would be a good time
to go back to (^) Nameless Seeker's Prairie to clear the dungeon.  Pick up some
Virus Core E's while you're there.  Be sure to bring lots of healing items with
Kite as well plenty on both BlackRose and Natsume.

This area we're going to visit has to be entered manually.

I'm not going to bother with the fifth block's map.  From the intersection, two
rooms follow in each direction.  To the south, the two portals are so close
together that the second activates as you take on the first, and then the Gott
Statue follows after that.  Once all the magic portals and the Gott Statue's
chest are taken care of, you should be done here.  Kill more monsters outside
if Natsume comes up a little short on level 38.

 Carmina Gatelica--

Sell your junk.  Here's how Kite, BlackRose, and Natsume should be stocked on
items.  Natsume and BlackRose should each carry 20 Antidotes, 20 Restoratives,
10 Resurrects, and 15 Healing Potions.  You can check their inventories through
their status screens while they're in your party, and then pressing the square
button on either screen.  Kite should have 80 Healing Potions, 50 antidotes,
50 Restoratives, 25 Resurrects, and 25 Mage's Souls.  Also be sure to have some
Waarior Bloods, Knight Bloods, Hunter Bloods, and Beast Bloods.

SAVE YOUR GAME!  If you're wondering why not to bring a Wavemaster, it's since
the boss is immune to magic.

Go north for the second illusion to show.  I only suggest clearing the portals
in the dungeon because it will help the Ryu Books.

   * When you fight Green Wyrms, consider Data Draining one in hopes of getting
          a Virus Core F.

The third block needs no map.  It's a singular path with four portals along the
way.  STOP at the purple smoke.  Use one of each Blood item on each character,
use Ap Do on everyone, and be sure you're all healed.  Go north to meet up with
and face Phase 2: The Mirage of Deceit, Innis.

So, from the get-go you see why wavemasters might not be a good idea in this
fight.  Their spells will do no damage to Innis.  To top it off, you need the
heals to be faster paced than the multiple castings of La Repth can allow.  So,
Kite will be doing the heals by way of Healing Potions.  Now for an explanation
of what Innis can do.

Thunder Trance / Demon Fire / Absolute Zero - Innis does one of three spells
     which the target cannot avoid.  Just heal after it happens.  Also, these
     can spread to nearby party members.

Earthquake - Like Skeith, Innis will jump and come down doing a shockwave.
     The quake is actually kinda weak.  Heal everyone.

Visions of Self - Poison and Curse hit a single person.  This can sometimes be
     used twice consecutively.  Heal with Anitodes and Restoratives.  This is
     one fight you will need your health and SP.

Suvi Lei - A single target is paralyzed.  Get that Antidote out ASAP!  If Kite
     is hit, then have either BlackRose or Natsume use First Aid.  They'll use
     the item since you gave them plenty.

Dek Do - This does the opposite of Ap Do to a single person.  Use Ap Do on the
     same person quickly.

Invisible Dolls - This is Innis's special.  It does the most damage, and it is
     unavoidable.  Three creatures of of three variations come at any target.
     Use Healing Potions or a Resurrect depending on what the moment calls for.

Data Drain - One person at random is hit with just about every status ailment.
     Both an Antidote AND a Restorative will be needed.  Call for First Aid if
     Kite is struck.

When the battle starts, have BlackRose and Natsume use skills.  Innis may be
immune to magic, but skills will go through.  Kite should stick to attacking
regularly so that you can heal at a split second's notice.  Keep everyone's
buffs up as best you can.  Also, instead of running around the battle stage,
Innis warps around instantly.  Between this and the moves that slow or paralyze
your characters, you can see why the damage will take a while to deal enough of
for a Protection Break.  Data Drain Innis for Segment 1.

   * Hopefully, having the Bom-Ba-Ye on Kite and Natsume both will drain some
          of the SP Innis needs for it's worser abilities.

After Innis is Data Drained, 3000 HP will remain.  It can THEN use Repth; the
Visions of Self move deals Sleep instead of Curse and Poison; Dek Do and Suvi
Lei are still usable; Earthquake does more damage.  Keep at the strategy from
before the Data Drain until the whole party gets this phase's HP to 0.

The defeat of Innis will send a massive shockwave through The World.  You will
return to town automatically.

-------------Seeking Greatest Wisdom-------------

                ~~Part 1: Other Core Issues~~

All the other players are missing!  This is the perfect chance to do the Grunty
Flag Race in Lambda server.  If you wish to do it, then do not leave town or
log out for any reason until you are successful.  Disband your party.  If you
save, then turning off the game will be just like logging out.  So, I suggest
holding off on saving.

To initiate the Flag Race, go talk to the NPC at the Grunty Ranch where you
raised your grunties.  Since you have all three grunties this server has to
offer, you can pay 100 GP per attempt at the record time.  You should have more
than enough money to cover it.  For this server, use Bony Grunty.  Learn to
ride as we go, and you will be fine.

***The Lambda Flag Race***
2nd Record: 19.23 seconds
1st Record: 18.63 seconds

Here's the gist of it.  For every server's race, I recommend beating the 1st
and 2nd Place times at least twice each.  The times will adjust as you beat the
older records.  So, if you get 18.6 seconds in one race, then you would have to
get between that and 18.63 seconds to get to 2nd.  Again, the times will keep
adjusting as you keep winning.

   * If you can't beat 3rd's time, then you will get a Fortune Wire when your
          own time is off by more than half a second.  In (^), getting inside
          that half a second gives you a Fairy Orb.

Now, as soon as the race begins, run forward to the purple flag.  Here's the
trick that makes the difference between 1st and 3rd: just when you're a short
distance away from the flag, you TURN to the direction you want to go next.  If
done right, the grunty's rear end will tag the flag.

     Purple - Get close, and do a 180 back toward where you came from until you
                   are close enough to the intersection.
     Red    - Turn north, tap R2, and continue running.  Be careful not to hit
                   that button when crooked or you will be unable to turn with
                   the analog until you stop.  Then, when you're close to the
                   Red Flag, turn another 180.  Then, go east from out front of
                   the Save Shop.
     Green  - Run west.  Let go of the analog to adjust your camera if you need
                   to, but run straight for the Green Flag outside the Weapon
   * Try not to kit any walls.  They'd slow you down as much as hitting another
   * To get to 1st, you'll have to be pretty precise in direction and timing.
          It is also something that requires NOT stopping at all, and possibly
          knowing where you're going without tapping R2.

Tricky, yes, but worth it.  You'll want these HP/SP boosts.  Also, getting to
1st Place the first time gives you Image 52 on your desktop.

The first three times you beat the record for 3rd Place, you get an Emperor's
Soul.  The first three at 2nd net you Silver Grunties.  The first three at 1st
give you Golden Grunties.  Use all the boost items from this race immediately.
Between those and what you got from trading with Bony and Snakey, Kite should
have plenty of HP and SP.  Any other Silver and Golden Grunties in the future
should be saved for someone else.

Now, the Chaos Gate had been shut down, and Lios wants Kite to stay put.  But,
he has no real control over you.  Log out.

          BlackRose says she's had enough of Lios.  No more following orders
               from him.
          Another scrambled message from Aura.  "You are my only hope.  You are
               the only one that can merge me.  Come to the dungeon of: (^)
               Merciless Grieving Furnace.  My segment,  Be ware of Cubia."

When you log on, Mistral will be waiting for you.  She wants to go with to the
dungeon we're heading to in a bit.  Before that, though, head to Theta server.

 Dun Loireag--

This is where I'm going to cover Theta's Grunty Flag Race.  If you want to save
it for later, then you may.  You can also save now.  Go to the ranch in the
southwest corner of town to pay the fee after talking to the NPC.  Select Iron
Grunty since it is somehow faster than Poison.

***The Theta Flag Race***
2nd Record: 20.86 seconds
1st Record: 20.00 seconds

Unfortunately, you will have to cross those planks and hope nobody blocks you.
Just as well, when you are learning this race, you can cut a few corners.  Be
careful not to be too far over when you try it.  I'll attempt to explain.

     Green  - Run forward, and turn north right before you reach that first
                   turn onto a plank.  If done right, you'll even cut across
                   the small gap at that first angle.  Hug the east side of the
                   first two planks to make the turn east toward the Item Shop
                   a little easier.  As soon as you turn, press R2, and run for
                   the Green flag  Just like with the Lambda race, do a 180
                   when you are close to the flag.  The grunty's rear should
                   claim the flag.  Run at the screen.
     Red    - This will take good timing on your part.  While running at the
                   screen from the Green, turn north just before reaching the
                   third plank.  Keep crossing ALL THE WAY TO THE END where the
                   Chaos Gate is.  That's right, ignore the Purple for now.  Go
                   up to the Red, preferably with your camera readjusted, and
                   do the 180 Grunty Slide to get the Red.  Adjust the screen
                   again as you come back south.  (15 seconds or less is key
                   for getting 2nd, and 14 is key for 1st)
     Purple - You would think to get this one second, right?  Wrong.  After you
                   get the Red, head south while leaning west on the bridge.
                   Turn west toward the Magic shop when you can.  Adjust your
                   view if you need to, but keep running all the way to the
                   last flag.  Good luck; you'll need it.
   * The worst part is when you're doing so well and either a player, grunty,
          or a small rock stops you dead in your tracks.  Even bumping into
          the dumbest thing can kill your speed.
   * The 180 Slide is very much needed on the first two flags.  Go no further
          than the Green or the Red when you slide, or it will cost you time.
          If you do the 180 and miss the flag, press the Circle button so you
          can cancel the race.  You'll get a Fortune Wire, but it will beat you
          ALSO seeing the "Out of Rank" message for however long.
   * Finally, the more you can do without adjusting your view, the better-off
          you ultimately be.  Learn the course well.  If you can do the whole
          thing without Camera Adjusting and without stopping or slowing, than
          you CAN beat the 20 seconds.  It takes practice and patience.

The first time you reach first place, you will get Image 51 on your desktop.
Much alike to Lambda's race, you get Golden Grunty and Silver Grunty for the
first three times you reach 1st and 2nd Place.  Divine Cross comes for reaching
3rd Place the first three times.  After that, you get some treasure items.  The
consolation for less than half a second from 3rd is a Speed Charm.  This race
is tougher than the Lambda race because of players, small rocks, and lots more
steering control.

Save the spare Grunty items.  That being done, head back to Lambda.

Now then . . . Invite Mistral and Moonstone.  Be sure you have plenty of items.
You will want all Blood Items for this.

In the big, empty room Kite will tell Mistral about what's been going on, and
she will think it's all roleplay.  Didn't we have this conversation back in the
previous volume?  There is a chance to meet a VooDoo Goblin, which is easy to
kill as long as you take it down fast.  If you finish clearing this block with
Moonstone still at level 37, then step out of the dungeon so you can fight some
more.  He should be level 38.  In fact, you could visit the storage room east
of the cross-shaped room each time you enter the dungeon to collect multiple
Invisible Eggs and Golden Eggs.

The third block is too straight forward to need a map.  Buff up everyone with
some Blood items, and head all the way north.  You'll get a scene.

As soon as you can control, set everyone to Operation Union Battle.  Then, when
the Cubia Core appears, take note which resistance is up.  If it is Physical,
then set everyone to Magic.  If it is Magical, then set everyone to Attack.
However the case, have Kite attack the Cubia Core and be ready to heal with the
Healing Potions or Mage's Souls as needed.

Cubia will summon little helpers through the fight.  Typically, they will be
the Kill Gomoras, but Repth Gomoras and Downer Gomoras come into the mix as
well.  Concentrate on the Cubia Core.

Periodically, Cubia will do an attack that you cannot avoid.  Heal everyone as
fast as you can.  Once this attack is done, though, Cubia Core's resistance
will switch between Magical and Physical, and vice versa.

Watch out for status effects.  Just like with the phases, if Kite is hit with
something where you lose control over him, then have Mistral use First Aid.

If the Repth Gomoras get too annoying for you, then Designate Target for both
party members to thhe Cubia Core, and have Kite work on killing the troublesome
helper with a multi-target skill or spell depending on the Core's resistance.

Have patience.  This will be lengthy.  It's just the first Cubia fight, too.

                ~~Part 2: Friends, Foes, and Fools~~

          Natsume will say she'll be stronger the next time you meet.  She has
               fallen for a trick that we're about to see.
          Sanjuro invites you to help him get a sword from the Gott Statue in
               (^) Bitter Hot-Blooded Sand Trap.
          Piros wants you to come to (^) Shapeless Haunted Holy Ground.  This
               being the next story area, we'll save it for last.
          "Let's Play Tag Take 2" has the third challenge at (^) Detestable
               Vengeful Scent if you beat the second one.
          "Level Up?" has (^) Bottomless Hopeless Footstep.  This is the place
               Natsume is going to.
          "To Kite" has Marlo wanting Kite to come to (^) Stalking Silent
               Footstep alone.  We'll need to do this to get Marlo's Member
               Address, which is the last of the optional new characters of
               Volume 2.

will need to be soloed.

Zyan is ready.  In case you didn't already know, he wouldn't have already been
here if we didn't beat Jonue R yet.  So, don't expect to skip to Martina.

We're going to have to treat this one like we did the previous two.  Warrior
Blood, Hunter Blood, Ap Do, and start running.  Zoom out while running, and hit

to an object in such a way where you can corner him for a good attack.  Don't
bother with your skills.  Keep laying into him with your attacks until he has
been beaten.

You will receive the Goblingloves A.  No, that's not a typo.

Don't bother fighting anything.  Summon a grunty, and get moving.  Mushrooms
are here, yes, but the Spring of Myst should be the only concern other than to
reach the dungeon.

The first block needs no map.  We're not clearing the dungeon portals unless
you want a challenge.  West or east when the path splits will take you to a
room with two portals either way.  In the second room, you'll see Marlo being
confronted by a couple of players not happy with his behavior on the board.  Go
after him by going all the way north.

You have to activate at least two portals on this block before reaching the
next.  If you are level 40, then it shouldn't be too hard.  In fact, the enemy
Headless King can be downed with Thunder Coils pretty fast.  If Kite has any
Earth spells, then one or two can take out a Valkyrie with ease.  Be ready to
use your spells as soon the enemies appear.  The large groups can be dangerous.
Valkyries take first priority.

   * If you get a sword called Glitter, save it to give to Marlo.

The third block also needs no map.  The one-and-only fork is the room with the
second portal you must face.  Go west for the Gott Statue, and then north for
one very sorry boss I won't bother covering.  Just hit it with Water spells
from a safe distance away.  If you run out of spell scrolls, you should still
be more than OK to take the Hades Hound down with physical attacks.

When you're done with the boss, Marlo gives you his Member Address.  Upon you
returning to town, invite him and Elk.  Clear the dungeon portals, and then
give Marlo enough treasure items when you're back in town to raise affection to
250 or higher.

At this point, you should have everyone who has an email chain in this volume.
The only other character you get later on doesn't have a chain until Volume 3.
While you can start them all now, I would hold off until their affection is
each at 400+.  I'll cover the chains in the next chapter.  Until then, let's
get a good party going for a couple more areas.

Mummy Scissors are small and weak to Earth.  If you can group them, Mistral and
Kite can down them super fast with spells.  Orochi is easy to kill even without

Since we're saving the so-called boss for last, be sure to pick up the Gott
Statue's treasure to the east on the way north.  Remember to take out Statue
Menhirs before any other enemy since they resurrect their allies.  If you face
more than one, then Data Drain one before killing the other.  In the northern-
most room, you will find Natsume fighting against a Hackberry King.  Just have
Mistral and Kite each use an Earth spell on it.  After a suggestion from Kite,
Natsume will finally catch on that the Level 10 Vine was a hoax.  You'll return
to town.  The party should be level 41 at this point.

the long run.  I had Kite at level 42 when I entered the dungeon, which isn't

Remember, portals first; Gott Statue last.  Easy stuff.  When you get the Gott
Statue's treasure, Kite will give the Demonic Sword to Sanjuro, and he will in
turn give Kite the Blades of Bond.  You'll be back in town automatically with
Sanjuro out of the party.

You finally have an upgrade from the Bom-Ba-Ye!  Blades of Bond is strong, and
still has a Thunder elemental skill.  It also has Ap Corv which ups a target's
physical attack temporarily.  However, you will lose Skill Drain for Life Drain
for your added effect.  You'll be needing to use the Mage's Souls a little more
frequently, but that is fine.

Keep Mistral in your party, and invite Piros.  Be sure everyone has plenty of
Restoratives on them for this.

name suggests.  If you still need a Virus Core F, then get them from these guys

level 41, and Kite and Mistral at 42.  You've been getting the Springs of Myst
during these areas, right?

of view and range again.  Use a Wood Sprite on him, and then repeat as you've
just been instructed.  His HP will be a cakewalk if you do this right.

   * You can actually do this without Ap Do, but I figured you might want to do
          this a little faster.  Doesn't really matter in the end, though.

If you run out of Spell Scrolls too soon, then he will need to be taken down
like the previous Golden Goblins, which is hard.  Really, you need two critical

and keep going through the last doorway.  No Gott Statue, no boss, just a scene
in which you gain Epitaph 01.  Balmung will appear.  He warns Kite not to get

The large monsters hit hard, and the Starving Ogres resist magic.  I suggest
using Ap Corv on both Kite and BlackRose, and then clearing the field since it
will give good Exp.  Moonlighters like to dodge physical attacks, so use spells
on them to make things go a little faster.  Kite and Mistral should be at level
44, and BlackRose not to far behind, by the end.  Grab the Cordyceps you see.

When you see a Franken, kill it fast with Thunder Dance.  Follow the map to
clear the dungeon.  Pick up the Bear Cat Eggs you see as well as Golden Eggs.
At this point, you can find Recovery Drinks in the breakable objects.

You see the room with the asterisk next to it?  Save it for last.  Big Eyes is
a large monster that looks like a sting ray, and it is weak to Fire.  They will
likely be easy by now, especially with everyone at level 45 and with Ap Corv on
your physical attackers.  Once the dungeon is clear of portals, and the Gott
Statue's treasure has been claimed, go to the northern room to meet Wiseman.

Wiseman will tell you that the information you seek won't be cheap.  He will
also tell you he will email you what he will want in return.  We'll leave this
area automatically, hence being why I said to clear first.

Before we head to our next destination, trade with Bony Grunty for the Armor of
Hell.  Give this piece of equipment to BlackRose.  Also, look to see if anyone
walking around has Bat Earrings.  You will want those for Mistral.  Go server
to server until Ryu Book III tells you someone eg., Macky) is online, and trade
with them for it.

When the party is ready, go to the area Wiseman gave us.  It will require Gate
Hacking.  Oh, and bring some The Moon scrolls for the Temple Knights.

If BlackRose still has the Sakabatou equipped, then have her use Gan Drive on
the Tmple Knights since they resist magic.  Grand Electric is a fast moving
mage, so have Ap Do and Ap Corv on Kite and BlackRose the whole time.  The
Staccatto skill works great in pinning down one at a time as well.  Mistral's
MeRue Zot from the Dark History weapon will come in handy against Dalaigon.

   * In spite of their magic resistance, Temple Knights are easily affected by
          The Moon.  So, if you find yourself in a bind, put one or two of them
          to sleep.

Clear the field, because it's good Exp.  You will want to be high in level in a
couple more chapters.  When you enter this dungeon, the whole party should be
at level 46.  Also, if you find a Demon Cloak, give it to Mistral to replace
her Noble Cloak.

Yes, the fights can get a little rough, but you'll be fine.  Do as many of the
dungeon's portals as you can, even though we can't clear just yet.

The second block, as long as it is, is just a singular path.  So no map.  Keep
fighting through the four portals on your way to the other end of the path.
Pick up the items and grunty foods as well.  IronBall Titan is just a big enemy
that like to hit hard and is weak to Dark.  Mistral's Ani Don (from the Demon
Cloak) can down the big guy in a couple of castings.

Treat it like any other Data Bug.  Keep Mistral on heals, have Kite back her up
if needed, and have BlackRose use skills while Kite attacks when he isn't on
healing duty.  Use Data Drain when Protection Break finally happens.  Watch out
for its flame breath, though, since it can do 900 or so damage with ease.

You will get a Virus Core O before the Data Bug turns into a Dalaigon.  Bring
it down like before, but be sure Kite has the killing physical blow.

You will receive the Spark Sword when the fight is over.  You will also leave
here automatically, meaning you'll have to come back a little later to clear
the dungeon.

It's the same place as before.  No need to clear the field, but clearing the
dungeon's portals is still recommended.  Sorry, the Gott Statue doesn't have
any more treasure for you to open if you opened it before.

Meet up with Wiseman in the same room as before to get a scene.  He will be
impressed that you got into a Protected Area, and Kite will tell Wiseman of the
events leading up to now.  You will receive Wiseman's Member Address, though he
won't be available until the epilogue of this volume.  He will also let Kite
keep the Spark Sword.  You'll leave automatically.

                ~~Part 5: Tune of a New Plan~~

 Carmina Gadelica--

Store the Spark Sword.  Do the sell/restock routine.  Log out.

          Wiseman sends you much of the Epitaph of Twilight, and tells you of
               Helba and Net Slum.  We will need to contact her.
          BlackRose will wonder what Net Slum is.
          You will also receive an additional message from each person whose
               Affection you've raised high enough.
          "Is This an Event Character?" will have (^) Scattering Fossil's
               Milestone for our next area.

Reinvite Mistral and BlackRose.  Before we continue with the story, go back to
(^) Blooming Promised Walkway to clear the dungeon.  You do not have to clear
the field a second time, but use enough of the field portals to get the party
to level 48.  Have Kite equip the Segmentart from the Gott Statue's chest.

Be sure Kite and Mistral have plenty of Restoratives.

Menhir enemies, which is a plus.  Clear the field only because the Exp is good

While the portals may be optional, the Gott Statue is not.  Grab that before
heading to the northernmost room.  Ark Prince can resurrect it's allies as well
as paralyze members of your party.  Mistral's strongest Water spell for now is
a sure bet on how to cut your battle time with them.  In the last room, you'll
see a scene in which Lios deletes what he calls "trash data," but not before
the NPC Plaird tells you to find Net Slum at (^) Pulsating Worst Core.  You
leave automatically.

end this volume's story, let's do a quick area to get this party leveled up.
You will need to put the keywords in manually.  Bringed The Hanged Man scrolls
to this to handle Ark Princes, and The Moon for the Squidbods.  Knight's Bane
from Mac Anu's magic shop can help against them as well.

This area likes to throw the rezzers at you.  Use The Hanged Man to keep Ark
Princes busy while you handle the Menhir enemies.  Data Drain one Menhir when
needed.  We're here for the Exp.  Be sure to break the crates and other objects
so you can get some Sports Drinks and Recovery Drinks.  Also, while you are
here, look out for a Golden Turban.  This will be Kite's new head armor.

When you see a Squidbod, use Dark spells and NO ATTACKS on it.  They resist
physical, but are weak to Dark.  I'm not providing a map for the second block
because there is only one fork near the end.  East brings you to some breakable
objects and an Immature Egg, and West takes you through a couple portals on the

Inside the Gott Statue's chest is Imp Earrings.  Give those to Mistral since
they are even better than what we gave her a short while ago.  When you're done
here, have your party members use their Sprite Ocarina.  You should only be a
few hundred Exp from level 51.

The reason we are here is because of some items we can get from flashbacks.
Oh, and if you want to figure out what is being said, then you'll have to
listen since no text is provided.

 (A) Hidden Forbidden Holy Ground--

Walk into the chapel up ahead for the first scene available at this point in
the game.  Like the other's, it is a flashback of the system from the time of
.hack//SIGN.  For watching this first scene you will receive M:Wavemaster and
a Golden Grunty.  You'll return to town automatically.

Return here for the second scene.  This one involves BT and Sora.  You will get
M:Twin Blade and a Silver Grunty.

On the third visit is a scene in which a bunch of characters are talking about
Tsukasa and a strange monster accompanying "him."  You get M:Heavy Axeman and a
Golden Grunty.

The fourth, last, scene is about Crim, Sora, and Tsukasa.  You get M:Long Arm
and a Silver Grunty.  It is to my understanding that you need all four Memory
Key Items plus another event available in //Outbreak in order to get a few side
characters in the last volume.  If this is not true, then at least consider the
Grunty items.

                ~~Part 2: Leaves Come Blowing In~~

Now that BlackRose, Mistral, and Kite are high enough in level and have some
armor equipped, it is time to stock up big time.  Bring lots of every type of
Blood item, and plenty of The Hanged Man and The Moon scrolls.  BlackRose and
Mistral should each carry what I usually ask for with upcoming Phase battles:
5 Resurrects, 20 Antidotes and Restoratives (each), and a reasonable number of
Healing Potions.  Kite should have over 50 Antidotes/Restoratives, 75 Healing
Potions, 35 Mage's Souls, and 30 Resurrects.  It doesn't have to be precise,
but getting your party close to this many items will be very helpful.

   * When I say lots of Blood items, I mean like 20+ of each one.
   * Some Knight's Bane scrolls should help, too.

Pull out all your Grunty items from storage that you saved from the flag races.
Considering that this party is level 50, Mistral should have 850 HP and 280 SP,
BlackRose should have at least 1050 HP and 190 SP, and Kite should have as much
HP and SP as you can give him besides.  So, if you haven't done the flag races,
then you you want to.  The upcoming boss has a very deadly attack in case you
can't keep it in check.  Are the characters ready?

   * At this point of writing this guide, I had 1065 HP and 235 SP on Kite.
          Just for your reference.

Save your game.  I kid you not.  You should have all the needed Virus Cores.
If you need a break, then take it now.

BlackRose will quote a message from Wiseman.  Alright, I would first like to
note that Twilight Onion can be found here.  Harpy Queen isn't hard if you have
Earth spells handy.  You can Data Drain them for a Great Elite AND a Jishuwen
if you like to collect Rare equipment.  Mad Witches can be Data Drained for the
aptly named SWORD.  They should be killed fast, but Ark Princes still take the
first priority in your kills.

Everyone should be level 51 by the time you enter the dungeon.  Overleveled?
Perhaps.  But every little bit helps when you fight the boss.  Be on the look-
out for Greave Sticker.  This will replace Mistral's Ceramic Anklet.

The first block needs no map.  BlackRose repeats the quote, but gets frustrated
in trying to figure out what it means.  Quite simply, since no portals are on
this floor, and since we're not worrying about the chests and stuff, just go
from the entrance: north, east, north, south, west, and north again in that
order.  You should appear by the stairs.

Starting on the second block, I recommend keeping Ap Do and the buffs from the
Blood items up.  Wait for the buff to run out before you replenish it.  Mistral
will not need Physical Attack or Accuracy, and BlackRose will not need the same
from the Magical stats.  Mistral won't need Ap Do either, really.  It's not as
though it would boost her spell casting.

That said, on the second block, Squidbod makes its return.  This time, since we
are high enough in level, feel free to Data Drain them for a chance to get the
weapon Fishskin.  Use a Knight's Bane if you get in any trouble with them.  You
do not have to clear the portals.

Dalaigon Anecdot may look like trouble, but it is weak to Thunder.  So Thunder
Dance will be your friend against it.

The fifth and final block needs no map since it is short and linear.  If you
happen to see a House Golem, which tolerates physical attacks, then Data Drain
it in hopes of getting the Lavaetinn.  Step through the doorway with the purple
smoke without worrying about the buffs.  You'll see why in a second.

 Net Slum--

You will see a lot of strange NPCs.  When the first scene is over, you will
notice that the buffs are gone!  In order to initiate the second scene, you'll
have to talk with each NPC here.  But, after the second or third one, redo all
your buffs.  Once the second scene starts--Tartarga speaks with you a little,
Helba shows up, Lios and Balmung crash the party, they argue, and then the
Cursed Wave's reproduction storms on in--you will go against Phase 3: The
Propagation, Magus.  Be ready.

   * You also get Harald's Note 2.
   * The NPCs you must find and speak with are Thea, Culhwh, Dorin, Sconk,
          Spiritas, and Jinn.  Be sure you didn't miss any.

For the most part this won't be hard.  Still, I must break down its attacks.
You still need to know what to do.

Earthquake - Magus jumps up and pounds the ground, damaging anything nearby.
     Have Kite heal everyone fast with Healing Potions.

Light of Putiry - This unavoidable spell rains light on the party.  Heal the
     party after this.

Data Drain - A random person is hit with a bunch of status ailments.  Use an
     Antidote and a Restorative on this party member.  If Kite is hit, call for
     First Aid.

Suvi Lei - A random target is paralyzed.  Use an Antidote.

Dek Do - When you see it, use Ap Do on the same person.

Death and Rebirth - Here's the big, trouble-making skill Magus uses.  A number
     leaves are released, each with a timer on it.  If many leaves are on the
     battle stage when the timer is up, then your party dies.  Take out each
     leaf one-by-one with Kite and BlackRose (using Designate Target).  When
     the timer is up, the damage is unavoidable.  TAKE OUT AS MANY AS YOU CAN!
     Heal up when you survive, and continue with the battle.  Each leaf is very
     easy for Kite alone to take out with 200 HP each.

Start off the battle by having BlackRose and Mistral use Skills.  Kite should
do only normal attacks in case you need him to do heals or to take out a couple
leaves.  Be ready with Healing Potions and Mage's Souls.  On occasion, have
Mistral use Ola Repth on Kite and BlackRose if they need the heals.  Don't rely
on her heals since they take time, however.  The Protect Break will eventually
come; use Data Drain when it does.

   * You will get a Virus Core U upon using Data Drain.

After Magus is Data Drained, it will be able to put a target to sleep, use a
Wood elemental spell you can't avoid, and occasionally heal itself.  It will
also have 4500 HP and lose its deaadly leaves.  Attack it until the fight is
finally over.

Watch the ending scene and the credits.  When the credits are done, BE SURE TO
SAVE YOUR GAME!  You will need the Data Flag to continue with both //Outbreak
and the last few things of //Mutation.  That's what the rest of this guide will
cover is the last few things to be done.

Use the Hermit Blood and Wizard Blood.  Now, before Martina has a chance to

is asleep, use a couple Fireball Storms.  She will wake, so immediately use The
Moon on her again.  Use a couple more Fireball Storms.

It is possible to do this without The Moon and even with the HP regeeration in
effect, but I mean to make this easy for you.  For winning, you will get the
Imp's Praises.

For the next few areas, invite Wiseman and Marlo.  I will not provide a map or
such information from these areas, so you will need to carry Fairy's Orbs and
find the Gott Statue of each area.  I'll let you know when you should look for
anything else.  These will have to be put in manually.  Be sure to trade with
Noble Grunty a couple times for Silver Scarabs, and give them to Wiseman.

     (^) Capricious Unending Corridor - A random chest has the Rare weapon
          Gemini Soul.  Grab the Chinese Food from the Gott Statue.
     (^) Bottomless Soul Kaleidoscope - Monsieur encounter at Spring of Myst;
          Gott Statue has a BL Yokohama.  Save that to give to BlackRose at the
          start of the next volume.
     (^) Lightless Sacred Remains - Field is a grove with a single path and one
          portal.  The Gott Statue has Bent Glasses.  Be ready for Ark Princes
          and Sphinx Menhirs both.  The monster Ancient appears here, and it is
          resistant to magic on top of liking to Confuse your party.

          the Super Wufei for the Chinese Food.

Wander Demon only has its own elemental tolerance.  It can also be Data Drained
for a Rod of Pattern.  Since the Exp. isn't bad, I suggest clearing the dungeon
of its portals not once, but TWICE.  It should get the party leveled up a bit.

The third block is a singular path with no need for a map.  When you have dealt
with all the portals during your first run, use a Sprite Ocarina to do it one
more time.  Good luck on getting the Rare items.  Once you go past the purple
smoke, you'll be in another outdoor area.  Use this chance to buff up everyone
in the party except for Sajuro's attack stats.  Approach the platform's rear to
find the boss.

Immediately call for everyone to use skills.  As Kite, you will only be using
your own spells when there is an opening.  Otherwise, heal Sanjuro, and keep
everyone's SP up as much as possible.  Kite and Wiseman should be on the edge
of casting range, but also separated just slightly.  You DO NOT want more than
one person dead at any time.  When someone dies, resurrect them, rebuff them,
and resume the battle.  Most, if not all, the damage you deal should be from
magic so you can get a Protect Break going around the point of 2300 HP being
left over.

   * If you can get a nice rotation going of spells from all three members,
          then Angolmore will have a hard time moving.  Useful especially if
          everyone is out of melee range.

If you can Data Drain Angolmore, you will get a Crimson Raid, and the boss will
turn into a little Death Head.  Have Kite deal the last physical hit by setting
everyone to Operaion Recover.  Change it back to Wonder Battle when it's over.
The boss will drop Lucky Shoes.

Lucky Shoes may seem nice because of the regeration spells and the No Damage
effect, but I personally like to keep the Time Sandals equipped.  Store them
and the Crimson Raid.  All that is left in //Mutation now is the Ryu Books, and
I am about to go over what will be missing at this point.

   * There is also making sure everyone's Affection is at 500 who is currently
          available.  Mia and Elk are optional.

First off, even though we've long since passed the 160 monster cap rewarded by
Ryu Book IV in the volume, I like going even further just in case I missed a
few monsters so far.  Would you rather find ALL the missing monsters at the end
of //Quarantine, or would you like to do a little of the list at the end of
each volume?  That's what this is about.  I'll note if you must venture the
dungeon to find a monster, otherwise, count on only needing the field.

   * While visiting these areas, be sure to visit the Spring of Myst, because
          I'm covering those remaining visits next.

The visits to the Springs of Myst is something I like to do on Theta since the
monsters are weak enough, and you can ride a grunty to make the trips faster.
Use Random to generate the areas you'll be visiting.  Try using areas with a
level in the mid teens to find Monsieur, and in the high 20s to find Grandpa.
You  will need a grand total of 25 encounters with each.  I like finishing
Volume 2 off with 26 visits to Monsieur and 26 to Grandpa.

   * When in doubt, expand your view of the field map (pressing Select) so you
          can get the dungeon to appear in all four corners.  If you can't see
          the Spring of Myst on the Overall Map, then it's not in that area.
   * Use this chance also to try and go to areas with elements matching what
          items you need for the trades I'll cover below.  As an example, you
          can go to (8) Dazzling Someone's Paradise, which has a Monsieur, some
          Cooked Biles, and a few Golden Eggs on the way to a storage room.

If you've been saving up those elemental items, then the number of trades you
need will be easy.  Use Ryu Book III to see who is online.  Below is a list of
player characters with stat boosting items for trade.  I highly recommend you
trade with the last four at the very least.  You can choose who to trade with
for the rest of the way.  If you got these items in //Infection, they will be
here again now, but no promises about //Outbreak.  Get them while they're hot?

If you're like me, and you raid those storage rooms in dungeons, then you'll be
over 600 broken things at the start of //Mutation.  Just break stuff and open
chests like mad when you go into each dungeon.

The Monsieur and Grandpa ones are easy, though tedious.  The "symbols," or the
little flames mainly around fields that give random buffs might be a pain.  You
should be starting early with everything, but this is why.  You need to look
for these things when entering an area (hence being why I recorded them where I
went) so you can get to Volume 2's cap quicker during the end.  You didn't have
to get every single one, but it certainly helps to grab the buffs you can.  The
Goblin matches tend to have lots as well.

Type of Records: A few things about your Grunties and the food you've collected
     thus far.

   * 50 Grunty foods collected
   * 70 Grunty foods collected
   * 90 Grunty foods collected

   * All Grunty food types collected

Early on, I tell you to pick up Grunty Food.  It's for good reason.  You need
lots of the right kinds to raise three Grunties on every server but Delta, so
getting to 110 total is a cinch.  However, I try to point out when one appears
so you can grab it.  Piney Apple is likely easy to miss when you don't know
where to look, right?  Well, thank my guide's mention of it and others.  By the
end of the series, you will want one of every Grunty raised, too.

   * Mage's Soul      - Heal an ally's SP by 50
   * Artisan's Soul   - Heal an ally's SP by 250

   * Noble Wine       - Heal an ally's HP and SP to full
   * Resurrect        - Bring an ally back to life at full HP, but 0 SP
   * Antidote         - Cures physical status

When you give a permanent boost item to a party member, it's like you're using
it on them.  Otherwise, just using the item increases your own stats.  Worry
only about your own stats, really.  As for the temp boost items, the elemental
stuff is good for trade.  Save 50 of each elemental temp boosters.

Scrolls can be found in Magic shops or in chests.  I'll break it down in some
categories so you can follow it more easily.

   * Fortune Wire - Dispel the traps on blue chests.
   * Grunty Flute - (Key Item) Allows you to summon a grunty to an open field
          so long as you have at least one grunty on that server.


Q.  How big is the dotHack merchandise?
A.  It is big and growing still.  //SIGN, //I.M.O.Q. (Infection, Mutation,
          Outbreak, Quarantine), //Liminality, //Legend of the Twilight
          Bracelet (aka. //DUSK), //ROOTS, //G.U., and also the G.U. Trilogy
          movie) are a collection of animes, games, and a CG cinema around The
          World.  There was also //Fragment, but that didn't do well.  Also,
          there are the books and graphic novels which retell the stories of
          the games and other events.  //LINK is on its way for the PSP.

Q.  Do I need to watch or read earlier .hack stories?
A.  You don't NEED to, but I still recommend it.  You're welcome to look up the
          Epitaph of Twilight if you wanted to.  I won't quiz you on it.  Also,
          Watching //LIMINALITY or reading Another Birth can give more insight
          if you are interested.

Q.  Speaking of //LIMINALITY, what is it about?
A.  The four episodes, each about 30 minutes in length, are about the Second
         Network Crisis in the perspective of a few people outside The World.
         They are investigating why people are falling into comas.  I won't
         spoil it for you, but I will say that you can see some parallels as
         both the mini-series and //I.M.O.Q.'s volumes move forward.

Q.  Why aren't you covering the stats for equipment?
A.  No need.  No desire.  I pretty much say what to use or look out for.  Other
         than that, it all comes down to whether or not you're a collector.
