    2.0 - INTRODUCTION
    ==================
    
    The goal of this guide is to tell you how to make more powerful characters.
    
    For any formulas appearing in this guide, I'll use the following symbols to
    mean the floor function:
    
    []
    
    The floor function simply means that you round all decimals down, never up.  So
    [4.1] = 4, and [4.9] = 4.
    
    The following symbols mean the ceiling function:

    The ceiling function means that you round all decimals up, never down.  So
    {4.1} = 5, and {4.9} = 5.

    3.0 - BATTLES
    =============
    
    This section details the EXP and HL yielded from all areas (except Item World)
    with no Stronger Enemies bills passed.  The battles are summarized in the list
    below.  Battles marked "unique" are battles that can only be fought once.  Some
    of the areas where unique battles occur can be re-entered, and a different
    battle will take place.  Details for the enemies and geo panels in each battle
    can be found in the subsections that follow.

    The EXP and HL values listed for each enemy are what you would receive without
    the geo panel effects.  The values listed at the top reflect the total EXP and
    HL earned from the battle, including geo panel effects.  The HL values for each
    enemy are only partially complete.  I haven't listed EXP or HL values for geo
    panels because it's such a small amount compared to what you get for killing
    enemies.
    
    Some of the enemies are classified as bosses.  My working definition of boss
    for this guide is an enemy that yields 1.5x the normal amount EXP and HL, and
    that doesn't follow the normal enemy combination rules.  For example, throwing
    a level 1000 Surt onto a level 5 Mid-Boss would create a level 1005 Mid-Boss.
    You can't always assume that a story boss is a boss in my sense of the word.
    For example, when you fight Flonne, she is not a boss, but her pet Dragon is.
    My boss annotations are only partially complete, like the HL values.

    The status screen for each character shows a bunch of numbers.
    
    HP:      How much damage you can take before dying.
    SP:      Special attacks (magic or skills) need SP to execute.
    Atk:     Affects damage dealt when using physical attacks and some skills.
    Def:     Physical defense.
    Int:     Affects damage dealt when using magic attacks and some skills.
    Spd:     Affects physical and magic evade.
    Hit:     Affects whether physical/magic attacks hit, and affects critical hits.
    Res:     Magic defense.
    Counter: Maximum number of counter attacks.
    Mv:      How many spaces a character can move.
    Jm:      Vertical distance a character can move.
    Throw:   This number isn't shown on the status screen, but each humanoid
             class has a maximum distance they can throw something.  Monsters can't
             throw.
    EXP:     Total accumulated experience.
    Next:    Experience needed to reach next level.
    Level:   Max level is 9999.
    
    HP, SP, Atk, Def, Int, Spd, Hit, and Res each have associated Aptitudes.  These
    are listed as percentages and determine bonuses/pentalties for equipping items.
    For example, an Atk aptitude of 120% means the character will receive an extra
    bonus of 5 to Atk when equipping an item that adds 25 Atk.  Aptitudes do not
    affect the rate that stats increase when leveling up.
    
    Elemental resistances for Fire/Wind/Ice are shown as percentages.  For example,
    a value of 50% for Fire means you take half damage from Fire-based attacks, and
    a value of -50% for Fire means you take double damage from Fire-based attacks.
    
    Ailment resistances are listed in this order: Poison, Sleep, Depraved, Forget,
    Paralysis.  For example, a Poison resistance of 10 means you have a 10% chance
    to avoid being poisoned.
    
    Mana is a currency you use at the Dark Assembly.  It can be spent on creating
    new characters, transmigrating, or proposals.  When a character kills an enemy,
    they receive Mana equal to the level of the defeated enemy.  Mana awards aren't
    shared; they go to the character who dealt the killing blow.
    
    Weapon mastery levels and proficiencies can be viewed on the status screen for
    humanoid characters only.  Monster classes can only use monster weapons, and
    don't have associated mastery levels or proficiencies.

    Some classes (e.g. Prinnies) require less EXP to gain a level, and some classes
    (e.g. Efreets) require more EXP to gain a level.
    
    
    ------------------------
    4.3 - Character Creation
    ------------------------
    
    Each class has a set of base stats for HP, SP, Atk, Def, Int, Spd, Hit, and
    Res.  These are the stats shown when choosing a class.  Don't confuse them with
    Aptitude percentages.
    
    After choosing the class, you choose the capability (Good-for-nothing,
    Incompetent, Average, Skilled, Distinguished, Genius).  When creating a new
    character, the capability only affects the amount of bonus points you get to
    allocate to stats (ranging from -5 to 10).  The better the capability, the more
    mana the mentor must spend.  The mana amounts also vary by class.  Note that
    new Distinguished and Genius characters require assembly approval.
    
    Then we choose the name, and distribute the bonus points.  Note the blue bars
    on that screen.  The longer the bar, the higher the base stat.  The bonus
    points are used to increase (or maybe decrease, if Good-for-nothing) the base
    stats.
    
    Finally we see a status screen for our new character.  Note that the final base
    stats can be slightly higher or lower than the values that you chose.  This is
    because the game randomizes them slightly.  These base stats are very
    important.  Not only are they the starting stats at level 1, they also
    determine how much the stats increase when you gain a level.
    
    Although story characters aren't created, they still have base stats, and the
    rules governing stat increases are the same as for created classes.
    
    
    -----------------
    4.4 - Leveling-Up
    -----------------
    
    All eight stats will increase when you level up.  The increases are slightly
    random.  All the stats except for HP seem to follow the same formula, i.e. they
    increase by constants (slightly randomized).  For these stats, you get between
    42% and 50% of the base stat per level.  For most of the calculations in this
    guide, I'll use this conservative formula:

    The formula for HP is dependent on level.  L is the current level:

    4.6 - Extra Gain
    ----------------
    
    Each created character becomes a pupil of the character who did the creating
    (the mentor).  Mentor/pupil relationships cannot be changed.  Story characters
    have no mentor.  There are two benefits to having pupils.  Mentors can learn
    the magic spells of their pupils by standing next to them, and using them until
    reaching skill level 1.  Mentors also gain stats when their pupils do.

    4.8 - Transmigration Basics
    ---------------------------
    
    Transmigration can be done at the Dark Assembly for characters that have a Rank
    of at least 3.  It has two uses.  Non-story characters can change into more
    powerful classes.  All classes can use it to modify their base stats and become
    more powerful.  Thursday cannot transmigrate.
    
    Here's what happens when you transmigrate:
    
    -Character level is reset to 1.
    
    -A percentage of weapon mastery experience and special technique experience
     is inherited.  The percentage is determined by the new capability you select.
     For example, if you select Genius, then 95% of your weapon mastery experience
     and special technique experience will be kept.
    
    -Non-story characters can change classes and names.
    
    -New base stats are calculated.  The screen where you allocate new bonuses to
     base stats may now show both blue and yellow bars.  The blue bars are simply
     the blue bars you saw when you originally created the character, and designate
     the standard base stats of that class.  The yellow bars signify extra points
     that you've earned on those stats.  They are determined solely by the stats
     without equipment bonuses when transmigration occurs.
    
    -The character level is added to a counter which keeps track of all levels
     stored in transmigrations with that character.
    
    -New bonus points for base stats can be allocated.  The amount of bonus points
     you get is based on the capability you select, plus extra points which are
     related to the number of stored levels you've acquired during previous cycles
     of transmigration.
    
    -Transmigration counter increases by 1.  I have no reason to believe that this
     counter affects anything.
    
    -Counter/movement increases from proposals are reset.
    
    The resetting of the base stats is the essence of why transmigration is so
    beneficial.  The rate of stat increase is determined solely by the base stats.
    If you transmigrate and your base stat goes up by just 1 point, that
    corresponds to an increase of 4500-5000 points by level 9999.
    
    
    -----------------
    4.9 - Yellow Bars
    -----------------
    
    As mentioned in the previous section, the values for the yellow bars are solely
    determined by the current stats without equipment before transmigrating.  Extra
    stats gained from pupils don't count, but stolen stats do count.  The tables
    below show the stats you need to get each yellow bar value.  The HP table isn't
    quite exact but the Other Stats table should be.  I think each class uses the
    same two tables.
    
    One important thing to be aware of is that each capability places a cap on the
    yellow bars:

    transmigration cycles.  Once you store about 185,000 levels, you earn the
    maximum points of 200.  If you transmigrate as Genius, that gives you a maximum

    Each base stat can have a maximum value of 240 (blue bars + yellow bars + bonus
    points), plus or minus a small amount after randomization.

    4.11 - Transmigration Strategies
    --------------------------------
    
    Here's a strategy for maximizing your transmigration potential:
    
    1. Get 210 bonus points by transmigrating over and over at some efficient level
    2. Gain just enough yellow bars to reach 67 in each base stat
    3. Level up to 9999, which should max your yellow bars to 40
    4. Transmigrate one last time and arrange the bonus points however you like
       (e.g. 240 base Atk)
    5. Level up to 9999 and never transmigrate again
    
    The first step is acquiring 185,000 stored levels.
    
    With max Stronger Enemies and a Lv. 300 Statistician, these two areas are good
    leveling spots:
    
    Cave of Ordeals 3 (CoO 3):  60,697,080 EXP
    Beauty of Evil (BoE):      183,569,948 EXP
    
    If you have strong enough equipment, you can clear these maps quickly:
    
    CoO 3: 25 sec
    BoE:   45 sec
    
    It takes about 2 min 30 sec to transmigrate and fight your way back to rank 3.
    
    EXP requirements for each level increase steeply.  The general rule of thumb
    once you get above level 100 is: when you double the level you want to reach,
    you'll need four times the EXP.  Example:

    Therefore leveling to 1000 twice takes about half the time of leveling to 2000
    once.  So we can find a sweet spot for each leveling location that will be an
    optimum level to transmigrate at.  Here's how we do the math to figure that
    out.
    
    Here's a table of some selected levels and the total EXP needed to reach those
    levels:

    Those numbers are for all humanoid classes and most monsters. Prinnies need 20%
    less EXP per level, some monsters (such as Surt) need 20% more EXP per level.
    
    Now we can devise a formula for the total time in hours to build up 185000
    stored levels, given that we transmigrate over and over at a particular level
    L.
    
    For CoO 3:
    
    time = 185000*((2.5/60)+(25/3600)*(EXP/60697080))/L
    
    For BoE:
    
    time = 185000*((2.5/60)+(45/3600)*(EXP/183569948))/L
    
    The results:

    As you can see, the minimums are 22.3 hours at level 700 for CoO 3, and 17.2
    hours at level 900 for BoE.  Building stored levels by leveling into the
    thousands and then transmigrating is a very big waste of time.
    
    So if you level on CoO 3, the fastest way is to clear it 4 times, transmigrate,
    and repeat.  For BoE, clear it 7 times, transmigrate, and repeat.
    
    We just need one more calculation to make sure our weapon mastery isn't being
    reduced too much.  We need to maintain at least 20 in weapon mastery to keep
    all our weapon skills.  That means we need 21000 points after transmigration.
    Since you keep 95% of your points if you transmigrate as a genius:
    
    21000/0.95 = 22106
    
    So we need at least 22106 points before transmigrating.  Assuming we start this
    process at level 20, we need to earn at least 22106 - 21000 = 1106 points each
    transmigration cycle.  Assuming we have a maxed Armsmaster (you'd better),
    here's how many times we need to use our weapon:
    
    1106/(20*WP)
    
    where WP is the weapon proficiency value.  For Divine Majins, WP = 30 so we
    only need to use our weapon 2 times.  For Laharl, WP = 20 (sword) so we only
    need to use it 3 times.  Even a Space Pirate only needs 7 strikes with a sword
    to keep up.
    
    Once your stored levels are maxed out, it's time to max the yellow bars.
    
    I'll assume you've acquired the maximum bonus points and are choosing genius
    each time you transmigrate, giving you 210 bonus points.
    
    The basic idea is to get each base stat to at least 67.  That includes yellow
    bars and blue bars (standard base plus bonus points).  Then level up to 9999,
    transmigrate, and your yellow bars should be maxed at 40.
    
    It's easy to factor in the yellow bars you earned while building stored levels.
    Just balance the bonus points, and if each stat isn't at least 67, you need to
    gain some levels to build up the yellow bars a bit more.
    
    Classes like Space Pirates, which have crappy stats, will need a lot more
    yellow bars to reach 67.
    
    
    ---------------------
    4.12 - Weapon Mastery
    ---------------------
    
    Each of the seven types of humanoid weapons (sword, spear, axe, staff, gun,
    bow, fist) can be used by any humanoid generic or humanoid story character.
    There are 256 level (0-255) of weapon mastery.  Each time a character uses a
    weapon, points are earned toward weapon mastery.  The number of points earned
    depends on the class's proficiency with that weapon, and whether any
    armsmasters are equipped.
    
    The advantage of raising weapon mastery is twofold.  First, you learn a new
    weapon skill at mastery levels 1, 3, 6, 10, 15, and 20.  Second, for every
    level of mastery you gain, the stats you gain by equipping weapons will
    increase by 5%.  So if a weapon normally gives you an Atk bonus of 1000, if
    your weapon mastery is 255, you'll get an Atk bonus of 13750 when you equip the
    weapon:
    
    [1000*(1+0.05*255)] = 13750
    
    The number of total points needed to reach a given mastery level L is given by
    these formulas:
    
    L <= 20: total = 100 * L * (L+1)/2
    L > 20:  total = 21000 + 2000 * (L-20)
    
    Note that the table in Salah al Din's faq is incorrect, because he uses the
    first formula for the entire table.  After reaching level 19, you only need
    2000 points for every level after that up to 255.

    Note that points earned for weapon mastery are different from points earned for
    weapon skills, monster skills, character skills, and magic.  I'll put more
    about skills and magic in a future version of this guide.  Here are the rules
    governing how points are earned:
    
    1. If you do a normal attack with a sword, spear, axe, bow, gun, fist, or
       staff, you gain points in weapon mastery equal to that class's
       proficiency.  Armsmasters will increase this rate up to 20x.
    
    2. If you do a special attack with a sword, spear, axe, bow, gun, or fist, you
       gain points in that skill equal to that class's proficiency in that weapon
       type.  Armsmasters won't help you with this.  You'll simultaneously earn
       points in weapon mastery for that weapon.  Armsmasters will help you with
       this.
    
    3. If you cast a spell, you will earn points for that spell based on your magic
       learning rate, different for each class.  Armsmasters won't help you with
       this.
    
    4. If you cast a spell with a staff equipped, you get the normal points for the
       spell based on magic learning rate.  Armsmasters won't help you with
       this.  You'll simultaneously earn points in staff weapon mastery as if you'd
       simply attacked with the staff.  Armsmasters will affect the staff mastery
       but not the points for the magic spell.
    
    5. If you use a character/monster specific skill (e.g. Laharl's Blazing
       Knuckle, Scout's Dark Cannon, or Surt's Diabolic Burst) you earn 20 points
       for that skill.  Armsmasters won't help you with this.

    Normal Items

    Item generals are found at floors 10, 20, 40, 50, 70, 80.
    Item kings are found at floors 30, 60, 90.
    Item gods are found at floor 100 of rank 1-39 items.
    Item god 2's are found at floor 100 of rank 40 and 41 items.
    
    Rank is a general indication of how good an item is.  Items with rank 40 or 41
    are considered "ultimate" and are always legendary.
    
    Here's a list of all ultimate items and how they need to be obtained the first
    time:

    -Nemesis Mk-II (monster): Steal from prinny Baal
    -Astro Suit (other): Steal from General Carter
    -Super Robot Suit (armor): Steal from Baal
    -Prinny Costume (other): Steal from prinny Baal
    -Hyperdrive (shoes): Defeat any Item God 2
    -Gao's Guts (other): Get from Marjoly
    -Myao's Cat Ears (other): Get from Marjoly
    -Crowdia's Beauty (other): Get from Marjoly

    Everything on that list is rank 40, except Nemesis and Prinny Costume, which
    are rank 41, and Nemesis Mk-II, which is rank 42.  You can obtain more ultimate
    items of the same type by stealing them from Item God 2 of the item.  So after
    you get your first Yosh, no need to find another legendary Cosmic Blade, just
    go into the item world of the Yosh and steal another from the Item God 2.  Note
    that Nemesis Mk-II and Prinny Costume are already at level 100 when you obtain
    them, so this won't work for them.
    
    For humanoid weapons, you can steal the rank X+1 weapon from the Item God in a
    legendary rank X weapon of the same type.  That's why you get the Yosh from the
    Item God of a legendary Cosmic Blade, because the Cosmic Blade is the rank 39
    sword.  Note that this doesn't work for monster weapons.  So the Item God of a
    legendary Lucifer Force will not have a Nyanko Soul that you can steal.  How to
    get legendary rank 39 humanoid weapons?  Most of them you just have to find.
    Mainly item world is the place to hunt.  Enemies may have them equipped, or
    they may be in the bonus list.  An easy one to get is the Longinus.  You just
    need to get level 25 spear mastery with anyone, enter the Dark Congress, leave,
    and talk to Longinus.  That one will always be legendary.  You win a God's Hand
    for completing Cave of Ordeal, but it's not always legendary.  A sure but
    lengthy way to get a legendary Cosmic Blade: on BoE after you defeat Marjoly, a
    majin will have an Amano-Hahakiri equipped.  Just reload until it's legendary,
    fight to the 99th floor, exit and save, then go to the 100th floor and reload
    until the Item God has a legendary Cosmic Blade.

    5.1 - Item Leveling

    A fellow FAQ writer, bend, figured these out.  I recommend reading his faq.
    There's just a small (but significant) error in one of his formulas, so I'll
    present correct versions here, along with some changes in variable names.
    
    First some global variables:
    
    x: item general/king counter, initially 0
    i: current item world floor
    
    For each stat, you have these constants:
    
    bstat: base stat of a normal item at level 0
    rstat: stat with rarity bonus applied (i.e. it's equal to bstat for normal,
    1.25*bstat for rare, 1.5*bstat for legendary)
    
    and these variables:
    
    stat: current stat of the item (not counting specialists), initial value is
    rstat
    sp: # of specialists of the corresponding stat on the item
    s: sign; if rstat = 0, s = 0, if rstat < 0, s = -1, if rstat > 0, s = 1
    c: specialist counter, initially 0
    
    For each floor of the item cleared:
    
    stat = stat + s + rstat/20 + x*bstat/200 + c*3/20
    
    For each Item General killed:
    
    stat = stat + s*bstat*(20+i)/200 + sp*(3+i*3/20)
    c = c + sp
    x = x + 1
    
    For each Item King killed:
    
    stat = stat + s*bstat*(20+i)*2/200 + sp*(3+i*3/20)*2
    c = c + 2*sp
    x = x + 2
    slots increase by 1 if they are not already at 16
    
    For each Item God or Item God 2 killed:
    
    stat = stat + s*bstat*(20+i)*3/200 + sp*(3+i*3/20)*3
    slots increase by 1 if they are not already at 16
    
    Note that the stat increase for clearing a floor with an item general/king/god
    is applied before the stat increase for killing the item general/king/god
    itself.  The stat values are stored as floats and are only floored (rounded
    down to integers) when displayed.
    
    I've made a program that lets me calculate these things quickly, and I'll be
    using this program to generate tables of stats for item leveling.  They'll
