"Jak may cry: Grand Theft Hovercraft"
If you are a fan of Grand Theft Auto then this game is right up your alley. Its like Grand Theft Auto for kids!...and adults! It is a great game for anyone. It is clean enough for children, with challenging gameplay for adults.
The best I can do without spoiling it is basically you was captured. You was injected with eco (being tortured) for 2 years. And daxter (the little wombat rat creature) FINALLY gets around to saving you. And then you start to play the game.
Fans from the first Jak game will be happy to know that Jak's voice box is calibrated properly. Yes, after the long wait, fans finally get to hear Jak's voice.
I am usually not a big fan of cel-shading. But on a game like this I don't see it being done any other way. The polygon count is perfect. Its really everything you would expect from a new generation system such as the PS2. You will notice hair fibers on Daxter instead of him just being one texture. Shadows are better implemented into this game than was in the first one. The graphics are some real eye candy.
The sound of this game is outstanding. The voice-overs are well done. The guns sound accurate (as accurate as you would think they sound. They are fantasy guns, mind you.) Each vehicle has a particular motor sound. No two vehicles sound exactly the same.
The mission system is almost identical to Grand Theft Auto. It also incorporates GTA's free roam system. Don't want to do a mission just yet? Ok steal a car and cause some havoc. Basically its: Guy says go to the place. Steal a car, and go to the place, do stuff there...Mission Complete. Sound familiar? Well it is...to an extent. The controls and gameplay is still that of the original Jak and Daxter. The mission system has changed a little though. The fighting system has also added a little spice to it. Now you have guns to help you destroy the evil metalhead army. And we all know that guns are awesome. But WAIT THERE'S MORE! Fans of Devil May Cry are familiar with the devil trigger. That comes into play with Jak 2. When his dark eco gage fills up he is able to turn into Dark Jak. To put a long description short, I'll keep it simple: Dark Jak kicks ass....unfortunately you can only remain as Dark Jak for a short while.
This game isn't that hard. It's set about right. Not to hard not to easy. It does what it was made to do: Have fun playing it.
Replay value: 9/10
Even after you complete all the missions, what's more fun than shooting things for no reason? Or simply driving around the town. This is a game that EB won't be getting back for a long while.
Rent or buy: buy
Buy. Absolutely buy. Just save yourself the $3 because you are just going to buy it anyway.
It just doesn't get much better than this. It stole a few ideas from other games, but Naughty Dog still managed to pull it off into a great game.
Why are you still here? Get up and go buy Jak II!!!
