I. Introduction
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally the third game in the Metal Gear Solid series is upon us. One of the
most anticipated games of the year. I got the demo not long after its release in
the Official Playstation Magazine, November issue. I played it many times and
decided to get a headstart on FAQ writing and write an Edible FAQ, which after
rejection for lack of content and "overspecialization" became an Items FAQ. This
is a good thing though, because it pushed me to do something bigger and better.
So now this guide covers all of the items in the game. This includes the
weapons, equipment, edibles, and medicine; possibly more if and when more things
arrive.

II. Version History
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1.0 - 10/05/04 - Initial version. This is the one I hope to get posted. I wrote
it while sitting in front of my television with a pad of paper and an ink pen.

1.5 - 10/06/04 - I added the food menu and food acquisition sections, and
description part of the edibles.

2.0 - 10/06/04 - Now an item FAQ. I added the Backpack menu section and
everything on the weapons and equipment, almost doubling the content.

2.2 - 11/17/04 - Game release date, all previous versions were based on the OPM
demo. I added the Medical Items section and a lot more edibles. I am thinking
about adding a section for camouflage.

2.3 - 11/24/04 - I added most of the names of edibles when you pick them up as
sort of an easier way to organize things.

2.4 - 12/12/04 - I now have all of the edibles, and I hope all of the locations
of the various items.

2.5 - 01/07/05 - I think I have all the locations and descriptions of everything
in the game.

2.6 - 02/20/05 - I have most of the max ammo for all the difficulties now.

III. Food Menu
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The food menu is divided into two sections: cages and other. Cages are reserved
for animals that have been knocked out with the tranquilizer gun. The rest of
the slots are used to store everything else: animals that have been killed
fruits, fungus, and miscellaneous items such as the hornets nest. When an animal
is tranquilized it will not rot, "dead" food will rot over time. You eat by
selecting the appropriate edible and pressing the circle button on the menu.
Snake will then tell you how much stamina it refilled and give an audio clue as
to whether or not he liked it. After one type of edible is eaten the tastiness
is then shown on the food menu. Certain animals provide medical items when
captured.

ii. Food Acquisition
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The knife is the most efficient tool in acquiring edibles. It uses no ammo, is
quiet, and does not deteriorate. The one downside it does have is its short
reach. Snake cannot reach most of the food hidden in the trees with just the
knife. This is where the guns come in handy. Shooting down fruit and beehives
to have them land not too far from where they were hanging. This can be a curse
or a blessing. The fruit is now within reach but if any guards are in the area
this will alert them and if Snake is low on health this is not a good thing.
Look in the trees, in the grass, under trees, and around dead wood to find
anything edible to recover stamina. Mushrooms and things hanging on trees are
stationary, of course. Snakes will go around in circles and will not run from
you. Birds will fly back to the spot where they were found. Frogs are slow.
Gavials barely move. It should not be too hard to get food in the game.

IV. Backpack Menu
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Everything Snake uses to get the job done. The weapons are obviously used for
killing or knocking out guards and hunting. The equipment is used to show Snakes
position, the position of the guards, healing, and other things. Medicine is
used in the cure menu to heal Snake. Everything is kept in the backpack and
under the same menu but in different categories.
