"The most anticipated Metal Gear Solid game finally arrives! And it's GREAT!!"
The third installment of the Metal Gear Solid games has its share of big stories, surprises, and much more. This game is more of a prequel than a sequel, but still packs a load of new features and outstanding characters than ever before.
AMAZING. There's so much that Kojima has left you to do besides the mission. Sneaking, which has always been a huge part of the Metal Gear series, is still a key in this game, but Kojima takes it a step further and emphasizes the player to use stealth. There's no radar with enemy point of views, so you have to be twice as aware than in Sons of Liberty. Snake Eater introduces the new camouflage, which you must change regularly to remain hidden in each environment. Another new feature in Snake Eater is CQC, or Close Quarters Combat. Basically, it is exactly what it sounds like. Snake, the character you control, is capable is performing close range attacks and maneuvers on enemies, such as grab, drag, choke, threaten, throw, or anything of that matter.
The game takes place in the 1960s in the middle of the Cold War. Just like any other Metal Gear game, the conflict is once again the same. Snake must prevent the launch of nuclear missiles constructed on a giant robot-like machine. But Snake gets a huge help along the way via Radio, which works the same as a Codec from Metal Gear Solid 2.
The details are picture perfect. Trees, grass, waterfalls, fire, animals, weapons, faces, uniforms.. all of these are just about flawless. Even the weather, like rain and lightning, day and night, are dead on. The environments including indoors like factories and sewers and outdoors like mountains and forests are simply great.
One thing that stands out in this category is the ambiance. You can hear the wind blow against the trees and grass and hear the birds chirp and flap their wings when you're in a forest. You can hear machines operating and pipes leaking when you're in a factory. That's how much attention was put into this game. Even the gunshot and ricochet sounds vary depending on what gun is used and what surface the bullet hits.
The music in this game is also outstanding. If there was a soundtrack for this, I'd buy it. Every song is catchy, even the instrumentals. And each song played in the game fits the mood of the scene, whether it be sorrow or intensity.
Playtime/Replay Value: 10/10
The playtime really depends on whether you are a Metal Gear vet or not. If you're a first timer, it may take 20-30 hours on normal, and maybe 15-20 for vets. After completing the game once, there's always more to do. When you start a new game after beating it once, you will have obtained new items that are capable of being used when you start again. This changes how you play since you know what to expect. You can unlock certain items by completing secrets scattered throughout the game that you may have missed when playing for the first time.
This game deserves nothing less than a 10. I find absolutely nothing wrong nor do I have any complaints. I believe this is the best Metal Gear Solid game so far, and I hope Kojima keeps up the fantastic work.
