This is a Battle Simulator walkthrough for Front Mission 4, released in North
America on the Sony PlayStation 2. This is a specific walkthrough only for
the game's side feature, the Battle Simulator. For other features on the
game, please check other guides on GameFAQs.

2. BATTLE SIMULATOR						[BSIM]

This section documents all the details behind Battle Simulator. If you wish
to skip to the Simulators, go to Battle Simulator: Durandal Scenario or 
U.C.S. Scenario.

BASICS								[BASE]
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Battle Simulator is a traditional feature found in many Front Mission 
games. Its purpose is to sharpen the player's ability to formulate tactics
and strategies for use in missions through training battles. The Battle 
Simulator gains additional simulations based on meeting certain criteria or
beating certain missions. Money and EP are rewarded for clearing simulations,
though a number of them also provide part rewards.

At any time that you feel the need to quit the simulation, select Give Up to
be taken back to the briefing menu or base. This will not result in a Game
Over sequence.

Q: Do you need to deploy the maximum of six pilots to participate in a
Battle Simulator?

A: No, you do not need to fill up all placements with six pilots. There is
no bonus or penalty for deploying less pilots. Battle Simulators, however,
become harder with less pilots deployed.

Q: How is money distributed in the Battle Simulator?

A: Money distributed in the Battle Simulator is done in the same manner as
missions. That is, money is awarded for every part destroyed. Don't worry
too much about it though as you'll get the bulk of the money awarded for
each kill.

Q: How is EP distributed in the Battle Simulator?

A: EP distributed in the Battle Simulator is based off two factors: Pilot 
Level and parts destroyed. For Pilot Level, more EP is gained if the levels
of the pilots are within a certain range for the Battle Simulator taken. In
other words, keep your Pilot Level low and do Battle Simulators as they are
unlocked to get the most EP. 

Once your pilots are beyond the said range, EP will only be gained for parts
destroyed. 1 EP is gained for each part that is destroyed, up to a maximum of
4 EP per enemy unit. If Darril destroys an enemy's Body and Left Arm, he gets
2 EP for those 2 parts destroyed. Needless to say, equipping EP Plus is a
must to gain a reasonable amount of EP.

Q: Can I get a part awarded in a Battle Simulator more than once?

A: Parts awarded in a Battle Simulator are only given once per game file. 
Most of them are also one-of-a-kind items that are unavailable outside of the
Wanzer Shop. It should be pretty obvious that you will be getting quality
parts.

Q: How do I unlock Battle Simulators 13 and 14 for both scenarios?

A: The requirements to unlock Battle Simulators 13 and 14 are listed in the
appropriate sections. As they are exclusive to the North American version
with no official documentation, the requirements are somewhat unknown. The
key thing to remember is that you should unlock the later Battle Simulators
through all known methods. These pertain to Battle Simulators 09 to 12 on the
Durandal scenario and 08 to 12 on the U.C.S. scenario. They have two separate
means of unlocking the Battle Simulators so follow both and you should get
Battle Simulators 13 and 14.

This is a pretty easy simulation. The four Zhelanie units are pretty average
in all respects, and shouldn't pose a real threat to you. As long as you know
how to work the battle system, namely attacks and counterattacks, there's no
way you can lose.

This simulation is a little bit tougher than the first one, but is still not
that difficult to conquer. Deploy your units to one area and clear out the
wanzers stationed there. Once you're finished, move to where the other group
of wanzers are and take them out.

This is the first simulation that might prove to be a challenge if you're not
setting up any Links. You can still try and beat this simulation without it,
but the fight will be tougher. In any case, the best way to clear this map is
to move in a clockwise direction. By doing this, you can clear out all enemy
groups and be ready to take on the Bazooka-toting Vyzov squad in the end. Go
after the Vyzov Missileers first before taking out their buddies. Once the
Vyzov Snipers show up, gang up on them and fire away. If you're using Links,
use them to practice how to properly position your units for a linked battle.

Hopefully by the time you unlock this simulation, you should have a grasp of
how Links operate. You'll need it to deal with the enemy forces in here. The
enemy is divided into two big groups - one to the South of the base, and one
by the base's Western borders. The latter one is armed with Jetpacks and will
begin moving towards the base by the fourth turn. In the meantime, use this
time to head South and deal with the enemy group down there. Latona will be
your main wanzer killer, so position her between enemies as much as you can.
Take out the Vyzov Missileers first, so the base's turrets don't get fried.

Once the Jetpack-armed group moves, send a few of your units to greet them
when they scale the castle walls. Again, Links will be a major help in taking
these enemies down so don't skim out on it. Use Hermes to repair the base
turrets whenever he can; their grenades can make this mission a lot easier.

Simulator 05 can be another stroll in the park if you set up your Links just
right. By that, your units should be linked offensively and defensively. Any
battle skills you equip on your pilots will only make this easier. Start by
merging your units into one group to fend off attacking enemies from the West
of your starting placements. None of the enemies are too threatening, but if
you must focus on something, go after the Igel Eins Snipers first. Letting
them snipe at your units from afar is never a good thing. Once you finish off
the enemies, clean up their friends to the East to end this simulation.

This is one of the easiest simulations that you can do. The enemy units are
positioned far away from each other and have no real link capabilities. Six

a clockwise motion and take down each enemy unit as they come close. If you
want to, have Beck drop an air strike on some of these units to speed it up.

Simulator 07 is a reasonably tough simulation that pits you up against your
worst nightmare - Rocket Launcher-toting wanzers! There are four Valiant F
Grenadiers on this map and they're all waiting to drop rockets on your team.
The other enemy forces are decently equipped and are also linked to boot. You
can either start by the North placement and jump right into battle, or start
by the South one and slowly whittle away at the enemy. Whatever you do, make
it a top priority to blow up any Valiant F within distance. The blizzard
conditions will make it tough to hit anyone, so get close and rain some hell!

This simulation is about as tough as the last one. The only difference? You
don't have to worry about any rockets raining hell on your squad. There are
Grenade Launcher-toting enemy units to deal with in their place though. To
start, go after the Valiant units to the North and blow them away. Once you
take them out, go after the Zhelanie II group to the East. Feel free to use
an air strike to soften them up. When you engage them, place Latona between
as many units as you can for maximum melee carnage in linked battles. Send
them to their graves and clean up the remaining forces to end Simulator 08.

Simulator 09 is the first of the "extra" simulations that you can play on the
Durandal scenario. These extra simulations differ from the normal ones; by
completing them, you can gain new parts and weapons to use. These simulations
have two unlockable conditions, so don't fret if you miss one of the chances.
Anyhow, your foes in this simulation will require usage of Links. Link Latona
to as many pilots as you can and set up her wanzer for maximum melee power.
For everyone else, equipping some battle skills will do the job.

Start off by attacking the enemy squads to the East or the West. Don't bother
with the one to the South for now. Avoid the Quint wanzers with the Knuckles
since they really can't hurt you. Instead, focus on the Machine Gun-toting
Zigle 6 wanzers. Once you clean up one of these squads, go after the second
one on the other side. Again, leave the Quint for last and strike down its
comrades first. When the South squad begins to move, eliminate the Valiant
Missileers. Once they're out of the way, this simulation is as good as done.

This Port Cumana simulation pits the Durandal against a bunch of TYPE 65X
wanzers equipped with Machine Guns or Bazookas. There's a lot of them placed
all over the map and if they gang up on any of your units, the consequences
can be deadly. Set up your Links before you jump into the simulation and make
sure all of your pilots are linked to Latona. TYPE 65X units from both ends
of the map will begin moving once the simulation starts, so focus on taking
out enemies in one direction. You don't need to worry about the Bazooka ones
until they get really close...Bazookas have pitiful accuracy at long ranges.

Depending on what armor coating your units are equipped with, you may want to
have Beck call in the Durandal transport to add a second armor coat just for
safety. That second coat can really come in handy against the Bazookas and
Machine Guns of the TYPE 65X wanzers on this simulation.

This simulation is a test of how well you can fight in a cramped space. To be
specific, the cramped spaces of the streets of Caracas! Regardless of which
starting point you choose, the Durandal will have to fight on the island in
the middle of the Caracas map. It's not exactly the best place for linked
battles and certainly not for melee users like Latona. At least, not while
your units are stuck on the narrow roads! Move your units out to one of the
main roads and you should be fine for link carnage and whatnot. 

Your first priority should be to get rid of any Vyzov II Snipers nearby. They
start off camped on top of some buildings, but usually fly down to the ground
once the combat begins. Take advantage of their stupidity by giving them a
ticket to the wanzer afterlife. Once you do that, hand out a few more tickets
to their partners nearby and any leftover strays in the simulation.

Simulator 12 is a short and sweet melee against two Zhuk mobile weapons and a
handful of Vyzov III Snipers. The hard part? Those Vyzov III Snipers are all
toting the powerful Rock Jack Bazookas...and there's plenty of them! You'll
want to avoid fighting the mobile weapons because that triggers the Vyzov III
wanzers to come and defend it. Unless you can clear away the opposition very
quickly, you'll be crushed by their firepower. Start the simulation by going
to one area of the map and snipe at a Zhuk I. Stay put as it moves away from
the Vyzov III brigade, then dispatch it once it gets close.

Once you down a Zhuk I, some of the enemy units should be coming your way. If
the Vyzov III Snipers start moving, take out their linked groups. Basically,
check each enemy unit's status to find out who they're linked to. Do this and
take out each group during the Player Phase. This makes it much easier to get
a handle on the amount of damage that each Bazooka shot does to you. Remember
to stick Latona or Bosch out in front since they have the best dodging rates
of anyone in the Durandal. Once you get rid of the Vyzov III brigade, finish
off any enemy units that are still around on the battlefield.

If you get this simulation, then you're definitely a good player of Front
Mission 4. As one of the four secret Battle Simulators in the North American
version of the game, these simulations are a step up from everything else.
They are easily the hardest of all simulations in Front Mission 4!

The objective of Simulator 13 is to destroy all enemy units without letting a
single one reach the bottom floor of the map. It sounds simple at first, but
it's a lot more complicated than you think. First, you're forced to deal with
enemy units coming down from the East and West ends of the map. The starting
placements are set up to cover these ends, but you can't pick and choose like
you would with other simulations. Each end only covers three units and as the
enemy opposition is equally split, it's three versus 11 on either side. And
that's not all; there are many enemies toting Jetpacks or Sensor backpacks!

The Jetpack-equipped enemies will cause problems for you unless you can kill
them or use EMP to disable their movements. The Recon wanzers, as you already
know, are problematic when there are Missileers in the map...and there's two
of them in here! Oh, and the Radio backpack is no good in here because of the
map's indoor conditions. And to make matters worse, you have to clear this
simulation in under 15 turns to unlock the Simulator 14!

So, how do you prepare for a crazy simulation like this? By going all-out!
Don't bother bringing any shoulder weapons to the fight; they're useless in
this kind of condition. Bring only hand weapons and ranged ones at that, so
Zead, Latona, and Beck will be needing some changes to their setup. Latona is
okay with melee if you have the right skills for her - Charge III, Double
Strike I or II, and Perfect Strike. So basically, she'll need to be primed to
slay wanzers with powerful melee blows. Zead and Beck, on the other hand, are
better off being suited for Machine Guns or Shotguns.

With Zead and Beck, you should purchase some computer sets to increase their
proficiency in those weapons and learn some valuable skills. Rapid Fire III,
Double Shot I or II, and Perfect Shot will do the trick. Elsa, Hermes, and
Bosch should be equipped with the same weapons and skills. Do keep Hermes on
a Repair backpack though. Bosch should ditch his Sensor backpack, keep Latona
on her EMP backpack, and give Beck an EMP backpack to top if off. Make sure
the EMP backpacks you buy have the Antilock feature on them. For other skill
preparations, these ones are highly recommended - Block DMG 50, Feint III,
Chain Plus I and II, Accuracy Plus I and II, Skill Trigger I and II.

Before heading out, create a linked group between Elsa, Hermes, and Latona,
and another one with Zead, Bosch, and Beck. Set Latona and Beck's defensive
linked action to Antilock. Don't forget to assign actions for your other
pilots as well. Lastly, set everyone's armor coating but Latona and Beck to
Piercing. For Latona and Beck, set their coats to Fire. This way, everyone
has some sort of protection against the Frost Missileers. As for wanzers...
well, you should already have an idea of what to use for this simulation!

When the simulation begins, place Elsa's linked group by the East end and
Zead's by the West end. Each side will have to deal with a Recon unit...look
at their movement range, then add 5 squares to that. Why? The Sensor backpack
these units are using have 5-square range. The last thing you want to happen
is get peppered by missiles from the get-go. Gang up on the Recons and blast
them to pieces. Don't forget to flank them to decrease their chances of doing
a wanzer dance and avoiding your fire. If they start dancing too much, reset
and try the simulation all over again.

Once the Recons are down, climb up the ramps and crush the enemy units in the
way. If you have all of the recommended skills, your units should be doing
big skill chains and taking out wanzers quickly. You need to kill at least
one wanzer on each side during the Player Phase. Don't bother using the EMP
backpack to disable a wanzer unless they're bypassing your positions. Stay on
the offensive and pound those machines into bits. The main threats on Elsa's
and Zead's side are the Rock Jack Snipers and Frost Missileers respectively.
For the Rock Jack Snipers, try to get them in a pincer formation and fire
away. The Frost Missileers won't be a problem once there's no Recons left.

For the second hidden and final simulation on the Durandal scenario, you're
pitted against a new wanzer - the TYPE XX. This Type 90-esque wanzer is one
of the strongest enemy units in the entire game. It's got a ton of armor only
second to a certain enemy wanzer in the game, and is fully decked out with
powerful weapons. Toss in some really strong skills and you've got a tough
opponent to deal with. Oh, and did you know there's four of these TYPE XX
units in the simulation?

In any case, let's get ready for the simulation. Like Simulator 13, you'll
need a combination of solid linked groups, strong skills, and a bit of luck.
There are two placements in this mission - one by the Southeast near one of
the TYPE XX wanzers and another to the Southwest. The Southeast placement has
four slots, and the Southwest one has two slots. Create a linked group made
up of any four pilots you like for the Southeast placement. For the other two
units in the Southwest placement, link those pilots and add any other pilots
that you like to their group. Put Beck in this placement...just do it.

For other preparations, these skills will come in handy - Rapid Fire III,
Double Shot I or II, Perfect Shot, Charge III, Double Strike I or II, Perfect
Strike, Block DMG 50, Feint III, and Full Defense. Any passive skills such as
Accuracy Plus or Chain Plus will also help out if you can equip them. Lastly,
give all of your pilots Piercing coats.

When you begin the simulation, have the Southeast group deal with the TYPE XX
and the Southwest group move East to merge with them. The TYPE XX is a major
threat, but only when it participates in linked battles. It's not that tough
of a unit alone, but it will take time to take one down. The best way to deal
with them is to create huge skill chains. With four units participating in a
complete, four-unit linked group, you should be able to down the TYPE XX in
the Player Phase. If not, it'll go down in the following turn. Deal with its
buddies once the big wanzer bites the dust.

While the Southeast group deals with the TYPE XX, the Southwest group will be
attacked by two wanzers and AH88 Seagull helicopters. Don't bother with the
wanzers...just take the helicopters out. If Beck is in this placement, call
in an air strike on the two wanzers farthest to the Southwest end of the map.
They will begin moving once they're hit, but don't expect them to meet you
for a few turns. Once the two groups have merged, clean up all of the enemy
forces on the South side of the map. Another TYPE XX and its lackeys will
have to be dealt with.

When you're ready to move North, cross one of the bridges and go after the
enemy forces stationed by the North end of the map. There's two more TYPE XX
wanzers to deal with; concentrate on them first before taking out the rest.
There's a lot of tough battles to be found in this simulation, but keep at it
and you'll eventually complete Simulator 14!

blow up. Once they're all taken out, finish off the two Husky Mk.III wanzers.

You don't need any skills for this simulation, but it'll really help if you
have Links set up. Linked battles are the fastest way to deal with the enemy
units on this map. When you start, bait the nearby enemies to chase you. Try
to put some distance between you and the Valiant Missileers. As long as they
aren't attacking you, you should have no problems clearing the opposition.
When the Valiant Missileers do show up, save them for last once all other
enemy units have been dealt with.

You might want to wait to take on this simulation if you just unlocked it.
It's quite a challenge if you don't have a good grasp of how Links work, or
have access to better gear. There's only one kind of enemy in Simulator 03
and it's a company of Quint Snipers. Yes, a simulation full of Snipers.
Dealing with them isn't much of a problem, but it is when they're free to
snipe away at you. Regardless of whatever starting placement you use, make
sure you use the city's buildings to minimize the amount of shots being fired
at you. If you can do this, you'll survive this simulation.

This simulation through the Rural Village map isn't all that different from
its mission variant. The enemy forces are split into two groups on the North
and South ends of the map. Among them are four Valiant F Grenadiers armed
with Grenade Launchers. That's the biggest threat you'll face in Simulator 04
as the other enemy units are pretty average. Start on one side of the map and
clear out the enemy forces stationed there. Once you're done, clean up the
remaining forces on the other side of the map. Destroying the Valiant F
Grenadiers first will make your job a whole lot easier.

Like the previous simulation, Simulator 05 pits your motley crew against a
handful of enemies on opposite ends of the map. This time, you'll have to do
it on the Caracas map. There's two Zeder H2 Grenadiers in here that are armed
with Rocket Launchers. Luckily for you, they're placed so far away from most
enemies that you shouldn't see too many rockets flying at you. Most of the
enemy composition consists of Shield-toting Calm 200 wanzers...and they're no
real threat to you. To clear this simulation, focus on taking out the enemies
from one side then once you're done with that, finish off the rest.

Despite being playable at the latter stages of Front Mission 4, Simulator 06
is actually not that hard. You have four base turrets to help you out and the
enemies are dumb enough to concentrate on them first. There's an Oborona I
Grenadier armed with a Rocket Launcher, but it's pretty harmless alone. There
are two enemy groups from the East and West sides of the map. You might want
to consider splitting up your team to handle these groups. The enemies to the
West are tougher than the ones to the East, so send your better units over in
that area. If you have the Minotaur arms, just blast rockets until it's over!

The final default simulation can be really easy if you use the right weapons.
What are those weapons? Grenade Launchers and Rocket Launchers! In fact, your
starting placements are so close to most of the enemies that you're almost
required to use them! Equip the latest Grenade Launcher and Rocket Launcher
parts at the shop, and if you have it, use the Minotaur arms. One full turn
of grenades and rockets should destroy nearly all of the enemies near your
starting points. Finish them off, then rain some more grenades and rockets on
the Vyzov II Snipers on the other side of the map.

The first "extra" simulation on the U.C.S. scenario is pretty easy. Even a
bit easier than the very first one actually. Why? All of the enemies on this
simulation are only using melee weapons! So, as long as you remember to back
away a few squares to attack, you'll never get counterattacked or fail the
simulation. Hop to it and make the enemy realize why you never bring melee
weapons to a gun fight!

Simulator 09 might be a bit tricky to clear if you don't have a grasp of how
Links work. You could also find this one tough without better gear to use,
but it's actually quite possible to win this if you just unlocked it. As you
might have noticed, the enemy wanzers you're fighting are much stronger than
any of your units. Zeder H2 and Blizzaia L2 are late-game wanzer models, and
will take a long time to beat without good Links usage. You also have to deal
with a grenade-firing base turret here. So, how exactly can you win Simulator
09 right after unlocking it? Take advantage of the base's narrow spacing!

If you choose the starting placement in-between the Zeder H2 units and the
Blizzaia L2 squad, you can use the narrow roads to "box" in a unit. Start off
by taking out the Zeder H2 Grenadier and the two Zeder H2 Missileers. Unless
you get lucky with skill chains during linked battles, chances are that the
Blizzaia L2s will reach your positions before finishing the wanzers off. If
that occurs, create an "L" formation so that only two Blizzaia L2 units will
attack your during any turn. Have Chaeffer on repair duty as you whittle away
at each Blizzaia L2. It's a long, but sure-fire way to clear this simulation.

The U.C.S. version of the Wassau map involves fighting a Zhuk I mobile weapon
and a few other wanzers. The Zhuk I is just a big punching bag to a fully
linked group and isn't much of a threat. The main threat of the simulation is
the Zaigaut Recons. There's four of them to worry about and with four Vyzov I
Missileers, you could be in for a world of hurt. The other enemy forces are
just your usual grunts and can be handled rather easily. At least, until you
start getting peppered with missiles!

Start off by moving North of your starting placement, then East to engage the
first batch of enemies. Focus all of your attention on any Zaigaut Recons
before you move onto the other enemies. The Zhuk I will just walk around the
map slowly as you do this. When it gets close, engage the mobile weapon and
take it down. You'll only have to worry about the enemies to the Northeast,
so head on over there and lay a beatdown on them to end Simulator 10!

On the Iberian Megafloat Base map lies some Zhuk I mobile weapons...six of
them to be exact! Despite the seemingly daunting task of taking on six mobile
weapons, the Zhuk I units haven't changed their weapons at all. And like any
mobile weapon, they're huge sitting ducks! Rush at them with linked attacks
or sit back and pound them with rockets (certainly so if you unlocked the
Minotaur arms). At this point in the game, you can probably take one of these
out in a few linked attacks. Upon blowing up the Zhuk I brigade, finish off
the other enemy strays on the map.

This simulation has two mission objective clears - destroy all enemy units or
escort the Zhuk I mobile weapon to the heliport. If you're trying to unlock
Simulator 13, forget about protecting the Zhuk I. You'll need to mow down the
enemy forces as fast as you can to do that. Equip the Minotaur arms if you
haven't already done so; these arm parts have the strongest Rocket Launchers
in the entire game. Give one arm to Renges and the other to Ines. Everyone
else will be fine with a Rocket Launcher of any kind. Don't forget to buy a
few proficiency computer sets and Rocket Launcher reload items as well.

Now, when you begin this simulation, move as fast as you can to the lower
area of the map. Fire your rockets with as many enemy units inside its range
as you can...this will save you a lot of time in cleaning up the remains of
the enemies. One full turn of rocket barrages will down almost any enemy on
the map. Whenever you run out of ammunition, use a reload item and keep the
rocket barrages going. That's all there is to know for this mission!

If you get this simulation, then you're definitely a good player of Front
Mission 4. Like the secret Battle Simulators on the Durandal scenario, the
U.C.S. ones are pretty tricky ones. You won't be threatened in the sense of
being destroyed, but you will have a challenge trying to unlock the fourth
and last secret simulation. Basically, you're going to need to fling rockets
like a madman because you have to get rid of all enemy units within 15 turns
or less! Hope you didn't sell those Minotaur arms...

In any case, like in Simulator 12, you only need Rocket Launchers and high
Rocket Launcher proficiency. You start off on the same map as before, only
you'll be climbing up the base and the missile turrets will aid you. Begin
the simulation by taking down the wanzers beside each of the turrets with a
healthy dose of rockets. Once they bite the dust, make a mad dash for the top
and blow up any obstacles in the way. You'll need to reach the last group of
enemies at the very top in order to meet the time limit. Reload your rocket
ammunition and when ready, rain some hell on the last batch of enemy units!

Strategy:

Recommended armor coating - Any.
Recommended skills - Rapid Fire III, Terror Shot III, Snipe, Full Defense.

The final secret simulation on the U.C.S. scenario only asks for a simple
task: destroy the three Zhuk I mobile weapons at the top of the map. There's
a bunch of enemy units guarding them...23 to be exact! In addition, enemy
reinforcements will appear to replace any units that you destroy. If you
destroy seven units, then seven reinforcements will appear on the next turn.
These reinforcements will keep coming until you clear the mission or if you
lose all of your units. So, unless you want to see how long you can last,
don't let the enemy gang up and attack you. Luckily, once the three Zhuk I
mobile weapons drop dead, the simulation will end.

By now, it goes without saying that you need your trusty Rocket Launchers.
Just make sure you have some other weapons to deal with the mobile weapons.
When you begin, your forces will be split into two placements. There's a few
opposition on both sides so get rid of them first. Once you reach the top
part of the Paris map, rain rockets on the Zhuk I units until it's all over!
