Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal
Review by kirbyroks
"Insomniac delivers again! This game will keep you up all night!"
Over the last two years Insomniac graced us with the glory that is the ratchet & clank series. People played the first and waited eagerly for the second. And now just a meager year later they have come out with another! So any game that produces a sequel per year has to suck right? WRONG! The game blows away it's competition and is one of the best shooter type platformers I have ever played.
First off you should know that this game is a platformer, not a shooter. Though the focus is on huge guns and the ability to reduce a small house into a fine powder, it is still a platformer at heart. Over the course of the game you will acquire many bolts which can be used to purchase more weapons as well as ammunition for the weapons you already have. As you use the weapons, they will level up and become more powerful versions of the same weapon. In addition to more power, most gain more features. Also, as you kill more enemies your experience grows, and when your EXP meter maxes out, your max health goes up! YAY! But there is more to it than just killing things. You will find yourself flying, driving, swinging, falling, running, and, if you are reckless, dying. And the new Multiplayer surpasses all expectations that I had. It is one of the most engaging and entertaining multiplayer games I have played, be it with 1 foe or a 16 player online shootout.
Insomniac has done it again. With another engaging plot, the game never gets boring. It is laden with humor, humor, and more humor and the fun never ends. The game starts with your incredible duo, locked in a battle of wits when Clank's TV show comes on. As they are watching the news report comes on. A planet is under attack! What are our heroes to do besides leap into action and save the day!
The graphics in this game are very high quality. While the ground may not be all that impressive, the special effects are. From the sky and the wall textures to the pools of toxic sludge and lava, nowhere will you find something that will make your eyes weep and scream "Unrealistic!" Unless of course you find a trigger-happy Lombax running around with his robot buddy leaving a path of burning rubble in their wake unrealistic.
The sound is awesome. The voice acting is incredible in this game, and all the voices fit perfectly. In addition to the voices the sound effects are top notch. From the vehicles and guns to the background voices in warehouses that request all organic life forms to turn themselves in for immediate execution, there won't be anything you won't like.
Replay value: 9/10
This has the highest replay value for a platformer of it's length ever. Just to beat the game will take the average gamer a good 10 - 20 hours, but to get even remotely close to completing the game, getting all weapons, getting all items, all skill points, etc will keep you entertained for months. Not to mention that even were that to somehow become dull then the incredible multiplayer could keep you occupied for the rest of eternity.
This game is a definite buy. If you can't afford it, then rent it because it is an awesome game. If you at all liked R&C 1 and 2 you will love Up Your Arsenal. It has a great single player mode and a strong multiplayer as well.
