"This is possibly the best DragonBall Z fighting game ever made."
Most of us might know that the Budokai series is the best fighting game series for DBZ. It might even be the best DBZ game ever. Period. From Budokai to Budokai 2, not much things where changed to the gameplay or the game modes. However now we are brought to Budokai 3 and I must say that this game looks great. Now on to the review.
Not much was changed in the graphics. They are the same as the previous Budokai 2. However this is a good thing, because the cel-shading represents the look of the anime excellently. Some of the things that did change was the ki effects and that is a plus. The beam struggles look awesome.
Everything from the last two games and more. One of the new elements added in the game is Fatigue. There are 3 levels of Fatigue; green, yellow, and red. When a character is being hit hard enough it increases that characters Fatigue and possibly become dizzy. This gives the opportunity for a free attack.
When both characters use a death beam move at remotely the same time, this will make a Beam Struggle. When a Beam Struggle is being done, both characters will mash buttons or rotate the L3 button to push the beams and try to hit the other.
Yet another addition to the gameplay is teleporting. When at most cases an opponent attacks you with a death move, press the X button at the right time to teleport behind them and attack them. Also when you do an attack to knock the opponent away, you can press the O button to teleport behind them. This can be done up to 4 times, however the opponent can also teleport counter you're teleport and so on. Each teleport consumes around a full ki bar. When an opponent attacks you up close , pressing the X button at the right time will allow you to evade the attacks with a little consumption of ki.
Also the characters now fell completely different from one another.
Modes of Play: 9/10
Unlike Budokai 2's DragonWorld, Budokai 3's DragonUniverse follows the story of DragonBall 100%. Ex. Playing as Goku and you beat Frieza, Frieza shows up again killing Krillin and Goku goes Super Saiyan (also get the capsule to go as Super Saiyan as Goku). There are however some some alternate events like instead of facing Frieza you can face his brother Cooler.
Like the previous games Vs. and World Tournament returns of coarse. As an answer from not being able to use capsules like Fusion in the World Tournament from the last two games, Dimps included the Cell Games. Cell Games is basically Advanced, but now you can use all the capsules including Fusion etc.
Dragon Arena is basically the mode to improve your characters stats and so on. As wel as facing other peoples characters.
The amount of music in the game is definitely good. Especially the Opening theme for the game. The english voice actors/actresses are in to represent their character(s).
The replayability in this game is much better than the previous two games. You either get the capsules from Dragon Universe, Dragon Arena, or buying them at the Skill Shop. Also you could raise any character you like to improve stats like Attack, Defense, Ki, etc. and send your password to other people so they can fight your build up character.
I do not have any complaints what so ever. Indeed this is the best DBZ game of all time now.
Buy or Rent:
If you are not sure of getting this game, then rent it. Even if you are not a fan of DBZ you will definitely like this game, especially if you are a fan of fighting games.
