"The best football/soccer game ever!"
The new Pro Evo has arrived...but surely it can't improve on last year's version?
Graphics : 9/10
Graphically, the animations are the most important in a football game, and Konami succeeds in realistically depicting the players. Their movements are all very realistic and convincing and you can recognize most players instantly. Of course, the likes of Ronaldinho and Henry will stand out more than some unknown Estonian substitute.
The stadiums look all vey detailed, too. The only drawback is the crowd, which are still bitmaps. Other than that it's flawlessly done.
The game runs very smoothly, except for the slowdown which occurs during corners. It's very annoying and disruptive for the flow of the game.
Sound : 8/10
Sound effects are nice but generic. The crowd's chants are well-done but more of them should 've been in the game. The commentary is as dumb as ever, as is in all football games.
Gameplay : 10/10
Pro Evolution Soccer 4 plays like a dream. The player's are very responsive and the A.I. is nigh on perfect, both of your teammates and your adversaries.
The Master League mode is back and even more immersing. This is the game's most addictive feature, in which you start off with a squad of unknown players and by winning games, you earn points and can buy better players so you'll eventually win the league. The Master League remains, IMO, Pro Evolution Soccer's main attraction.
The biggest improvements over last year's version, however, are the game's licences, which include the Italian Serie A, the Spanish Primera Division and the Dutch Eredivisie. You can now play full seasons in those countries with actual teams and players! It still doesn't rival FIFA's licenses, but it's a step in the right direction.
Replay Value : 10/10
This is a difficult game to master, even if you've played any of the previous games in the series. You'll need a lot of practice before you can compete on the highest level. Up to eight players, using two multitaps, can play simultaneously. The biggest flaw is the lack of online play, which is included in the Xbox version.
Overall : 10/10
The best football game available and one of the best spots games overall, if you like football/soccer, you need to play this.
