Amazingly nobody has created a guide for one of DoC's most entertaining features
as of yet, so I stepped up to the plate. Admittedly gun customization isn't an
excitingly complex feature and more than likely you'll be able to handle it on
your own but if you're ever looking for a little guidance, want to look up a
quick piece of information or just want to see if you can expand your knowledge
on the game a bit more you might find this guide handy.

Several things will be covered in this FAQ, first customization basics are
explained along with what the stats and parameters mean. There is also a
complete list of all of the gun parts available with my recommendations on how
to equip/upgrade your weapons. If one needs a little help finding a specific
gun part there are instructions chapter by chapter of where all of the gun parts
are as well.

    1.1  The Screen
   #---------------#

"Customization" is the fourth option down on the in-game menu. It is here that
you can build three separate guns that can be switched on the fly. On the left
side of the screen is your five equipment options which you can scroll through
and select with the D-pad. Below that is a small window giving a description of
whatever part is currently selected. And just below that is any effect the piece
of selected equipment has on your gun's general stats, if any.

The right side of the screen has an image of what your gun is SUPPOSED to look
like out on the field, the image can be maneuvered and rotated with the analog
sticks. Below that is the radar graph, which shows how strong your gun as a
whole is in the areas of Power, Speed, Weight and Range as well as a letter
rating of those four categories. And below that it shows your current gun's
effectiveness/accuracy at short, medium and long ranges using a letter rating as
well.

    1.2  The Parts
   #--------------#

In total there are 12 different types of final frames, 6 barrels, 2 scopes, 5
options, 9 accessories and a whole lot of combinations you can make. All guns
require a frame and a barrel in order to be used, and these two parts are the
ultimate factor in the behavior of your weapon. The other three slots are
optional, adding power to your weapon at the cost of a little extra weight.

SCOPES - A sadly limited category. Either you go with a generic sniper scope or
         you equip a part to increase materia damage.

OPTIONS - This slot gives you another chance to push your weapons capabilities
          in several of the main areas. You can boost damage dealt, your magical
          capabilities, your running speed with a weapon, or your reload speed.

ACCESSORIES - Essentially any (and every) thing else. The most noteworthy aspect
              of this gun part slot is this is where you equip materia.

AMMO - A useless slot, but it appears in the menu. The three different types of
       guns use different ammo, but they have only one type of ammo each.

I don't want to get into those Alpha and Beta symbols so I'll just be listing
upgrades that feature those symbols as their alphabet looker-likes, Y and B. I
don't know if that makes me look stupid but whaddevar.

    1.3  The Stats
   #--------------#

These are specific gun-related stats, although some gun parts will affect
Vincent's four personal stats. All stats can go as low as zero and, except
weight, they all max at 500.

|          |   Most parts have a Weight stat, which determines |
|          |   how fast Vincent runs while in shooting mode.   |
|  Weight  |   Weight is a bit important, you don't want it    |
|          |   horrible but it won't hurt if it gets up a bit  |
|          |   high. Vin's running speed without the gun held  |
|          |   ready isn't affected by this stat.              |
|          |                                                   |
|----------|---------------------------------------------------|
|          |                                                   |
|          |   Speed is the stat affecting your rate of fire   |
|          |   with the selected gun. A very important stat    |
|  Speed   |   for your machine gun and handgun, while mildy   |
|          |   important for the rifle. The speed stat is      |
|          |   exclusively determined by frames and barrels.   |
|          |                                                   |
|----------|---------------------------------------------------|
|          |                                                   |
|          |   The stat of all stats, power is of the utmost   |
|          |   importance for almost all gun set-ups. You      |
|  Power   |   can deal with low weight or speed, but if you   |
|          |   don't have a gun that can deal out damage you   |
|          |   really are in a bind. Besides F&Bs the Power    |
|          |   Booster can raise this stat.                    |
|          |                                                   |

|          |                                                   |
|          |   Range will determine just how far away you can  |
|          |   target an enemy. You can shoot at any enemy     |
|          |   you see and stand a chance at hitting them, but |
|  Range   |   if you don't see the pink circle inside the     |
|          |   targetting reticle you don't stand a GOOD       |
|          |   chance at shooting them. It is very important   |
|          |   to have high Range on at least one gun.         |
|          |                                                   |

|          |                                                   |
|          |   The Short stat is your accuracy at short range. |
|          |   This is probably least important of the         |
|  Short   |   accuracy stats, as at these ranges you have     |
|          |   melee attacks and magic at their most effective |
|          |   and you can usually retreat safely to a further |
|          |   distance anyways.                               |
|          |                                                   |

|          |   Accuracy at Medium distance is the most         |
|  Medium  |   important accuracy stat, mainly because of the  |
|          |   large number of enemies encountered at this     |
|          |   distance.                                       |

|          |   Long range accuracy is a bit important, but not |
|  Long    |   all that much. Most long distance shots are     |
|          |   probably going to be made through the sniper    |
|          |   scope, and the stat really doesn't seem to have |
|          |   any effect on these shots.                      |

    1.4  The Shop
   #-------------#

Scattered throughout the missions are oddly placed jukeboxes (seriously,
couldn't they use moogles or something?) which upon accessing allow you to buy,
sell or customize your equipment, as well as buying and selling consumable
items. Each option has some pretty standard rules that all of the equipment goes
by.

  Buying
  ŻŻŻŻŻŻ
- Any normal piece of equipment that has a specific location it is found in one
  chapter will be purchaseable the following chapter for 1000 gil. Exclusions
  are the three unique gun frames and barrels, Manaheart and the S/M/L
  Adjusters, as those aren't found in a specific spot.
- Auto Reloader and Recoil Limiter have higher prices, they can only be obtained
  by purchasing them.
- Gun frames can only be purchased at shops in between chapters.

  Selling
  ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
- Any piece of equipment can be sold, it just can't be equipped for it to be
  sellable.
- All normal equipment is sold at 7/10 the price it cost to buy/upgrade. All of
  the gil put into upgrading a gun part is calculated in the selling price.
- Special equipment, or anything that can't be bought, can only be sold for 10
  gil each - even if it has been upgraded.

  Customization
  ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
- The first shop in the game only allows one upgrade, which is upgrading the
  Cerberus to the Cerberus II.
- After the first shop all equipment that can be upgraded is capable of being
  upgraded at any shop. The only exception is the Ultima Weapon.

    2.1  Handguns
   #-------------#

Handguns are supposed to be the more balanced of the three gun types, decent at
any range but excelling at medium distance. They all fire three bullets at a
time, leading them to go through ammo a bit quickly. The Cerberus is the most
important gun in your arsenal your first game through so you have to make sure
you not only keep up on it's upgrades but also pick an upgrade path that works
best for you. Once you start going through on Extra Hard the focus will shift to
buying the Ultima Weapon for the ultimate offense.

  2.1.1  Power Cerberus
 *=====================*

The Power Cerberus is probably the best path for your first handgun as far as
I'm concerned. While it is possible that you could find one of the other two
paths perform better, a key aspect of the Power Cerberus is that it is
efficient. Every bullet shot is being used to it's largest potential. This is a
bit of an important thing with what is likely your main weapon that is quite
capable of eating through it's ammunition supply with rapidity...ness. The only
major downside of the Power path is that you will be limited to six shots before
having to reload - but that won't be an issue in the majority of your gunfights.
The great thing about the Powered Cerberus is it's Power stat is just as high as
the Ultima Weapon's, so you will at least be able to match the amount of damage
per shot the Ultima Weapon can put out before you acquire it.

  2.1.2  Speed Cerberus
 *=====================*

Speed is a decent path to choose, while damage might be lower the ability to
pound an opponent with rapid fire is very helpful - especially in boss battles.
The only problem is that this is going to eat through your ammo quickly, meaning
if you choose the Speed Cerberus you'll be switching to your other guns a bit
more frequently. However if you don't mind using your machine guns or your
rifles to gun down enemies or if you're willing to put aside a small chunk of
gil to buy ammo with you won't have a problem going with the Speed path.

  2.1.3  Medium Cerberus
 *======================*

The Medium Cerberus is a more well-balanced handgun, with stats right in the
middle and a high ammo count. The only problem is, who really needs to be able
to shoot their Cerberus 16-28 times before they have to reload? Outside of boss
fights (which still aren't going to put your insane clip size to amazing use),
it's useless. Reloading in between battles or when taking cover should be second
nature, and if you're standing out in the open long enough to dump 84 bullets
into an enemy something must be wrong with your playing style. The Medium
Cerberus is in the middle of the other two models, but unfortunately it seems
it's stats are too low as a whole. By going Medium you'll suffer either a
substantial loss in speed or power and in return get only a smaller boost in the
other category. But if the Power path is just really troubling you with it's
slower firing rate you might find this model more comftorable.

  2.1.4  Ultima Weapon
 *=====================*

The ultimate handgun is yours once you've thrown down 250,000 in upgrades to get
it powered up. The Ultima Weapon is very important once you start getting into
Extra Hard mode, where it's power will help you keep from getting overwhelmed by
the numerous and persistent foes. Your first game though? I say don't worry
about it. Play the game as it should be played, build a Cerberus model first and
then when you replay Extra Hard mode worry about building this sucker up.

No, it isn't a sword.

  2.1.5  Death Penalty
 *====================*

The ultimatER handgun is available to Vincent during the last chapter of the
game while in Chaos form. It's not so much a handgun as a friggin' pistol
cannon, but this is the only category it kinda fits in. The Death Penalty fires
beams of energy which do 2000 damage to regular enemies and to the two bosses
they do some increment of 500 between 500 and 2000 damage. It's a OHKO on the
two regular enemies it is used against, but unfortunately it doesn't activate
any critical hits, so say bye-bye to your critical hit stat. Another nice thing
about the Death Penalty is it is equipped in it's own individual fourth weapon
slot, so you're standard guns don't have to be affected.

    2.2  Machine Guns
   #-----------------#

Machine guns function best as your closer range weaponry. Machine Gun frames are
probably the weakest in the game, they really aren't hardly any better in their
designated range than handguns and they only get the job done while being sloppy
and going through quite a bit of ammo. You surely can build effective machine
guns, it's just a question of how much you will use them. At first you will be
limited to using them only at very short ranges, while you can throw a Normal
Barrel on them at any time their recoil will make distant targets hell to kill.
You'll likely have to wait until you buy the Recoil Limiter (a hefty 16,000 gil
and takes your Accessory slot) before you can consider using it at further
distances. At that cost though I can hardly recommend it for someone intent on
optimization.

  2.2.1  Power Griffon
 *====================*

The power path isn't a bad way to take for your machine gun. Equipped with the
standard short barrel it still maintains a decent firing rate while dealing out
some nice damage. It's major weaknesses are it's recoil, which can be a bit
annoying even at short range, and it stays a fairly heavy gun while the other
two paths get substantially lighter - which might be important considering it's
geared towards the more intense short range combat. Like with the Cerberus,
going the power path means you will be getting the most out of each bullet. But
considering it's a machine gun and it is also much more of a secondary weapon
ammo conservation probably shouldn't be at the top of your list.

  2.2.2  Speed Griffon
 *====================*

The speed path takes the firing rate of your machine gun to the absolute
extreme, spitting out an unhealthily large stream of bullets at a constant rate.
It's too fast in fact. The Speed path goes through bullets like non-other, which
really aren't doing much because of their pitiful damage. It'd be different if
the speed path was particularly deadly but it isn't, it really isn't any more
effective than the other two paths. It just trades raw power for more pounds of
lead at a just about equal rate. But the Speed path can be a good decision for
using at mid-ranges. It has the largest range of the machine guns and it's
firing rate becomes somewhat manageable once the Normal Barrel has been placed
on it.

The one thing the Speed Griffon path is definitely good for though is if you are
looking for a cheap secondary machine gun model. At just the first stage it has
established it's max speed and power, meaning you could stop there and just be
missing out on decreased weight, higher range and a 99 bullet capacity - and if
you go ahead and go to the beta model you'll still double the range, giving you
that lucrative 40 range machine gun you might or might not be looking for.

The Medium upgrade path strikes a pretty favorable middleground between the
Speed and Power paths, much better than the Cerberus' Medium handgun I'd say.
It still holds more bullets to a clip than it really needs, but as far as the
purpose of a machine gun goes this model fits the bill quite nicely. High rate
of fire without becoming ridiculous and it does some decent damage. Between this
and the Power Griffon this is a bit more deadly I'd say.

  2.2.4  Blast Machine Gun

The Blast Machine isn't very strong stat-wise, but it's usefulness comes from
it's ability to knock over any regular enemy with just one bullet. While this
isn't a good way to rack up damage on enemies quickly, it is still effective for
weakening groups of enemies. It works equally well as either with a short barrel
for holding off groups of enemies or with a longer barrel for sniping a serious
distant threat so you can close in on it.

The Blast Machine Gun is most effective when it is paired with something, either
another gun or with equipment. If you build a weapon specifically for melee the
Blast Machine Gun makes a decent frame as it mixes well with melee combat. And
if you are building a high powered magic gun with the Manaheart the Blast
Machine Gun will keep enemies off of their feet in between magic castings.

With short and medium ranges covered, the rifle is your main frame for long
range combat. It has a relatively slow fire rate but packs quite a nice punch.
It is a very precise gun as well, a good way to rack up some critical hits as
you snipe away at distant enemies. You'll probably never have a single ammo
shortage with it either, so you'll always be able to depend on your rifle.

  2.3.1  Power Hydra
 *==================*

The Power path is a fairly nice way to take your rifle... up until it's final
form, the Gigant Hydra. Living proof that you need at least a tiny bit of
balance to be a good gun, the Gigant Hydra has a one bullet magazine. One
bullet - that's ridiculous. Having to watch the reload animation everytime you
take a shot is asking too much, which is why I can't recommend using the GH at
all unless you equip it with the Auto Reloader (26,000 gil). This'll take care
of the reload problem for the most part, but it'll still have a horrible rate of
fire and suffer some ridiculous recoil that the Recoil Limiter won't help. The
real kicker is that all of the insane damage it does really has no practical
use. Sure you can drop just about any regular enemy in one shot but other rifles
will drop them in two (maybe one) shot to the body or in one head shot, which in
either case will still be faster than blowing them away with this brute. It's
insane power could help in boss battles... except firing off one bullet every
two seconds isn't going to get the job done fast at all.

I definitely recommend keeping the Power Hydra in the alpha stage. It still has
insane power - more than the Ultima Weapon, but it also has a 3 bullet magazine
which is at least manageable. It is an all around awesome weapon for the alpha
stage - and at 26,000 cheaper than what most other weapons will end up costing
you too. This is my recommended path.

The Speed branch isn't particularly great at longer ranges, but it makes a very
efficient mid-range weapon because of it's fire rate. If you're looking for a
good secondary weapon for when you want to conserve handgun bullets this might
suit your fancy a bit more than a machine gun. During standard battles have it
outfitted with a Normal barrel, and if you need to do some long range sniping it
can get the job done well enough there too, just take the couple of seconds
needed to go into the menu and switch for the Long barrel.

For the man that wants to be able to shoot his rifle 42 times without having to
worry about reloading. But honestly, this is a very sturdy and useful rifle -
the best way to go if you just want a standard long range gun. It's power is
substantial enough for most situations and it's firing rate is far better than
the Power path. It's down to opinion and the situation over which is the better
long range weapon, though while the Power Hydra has a couple of weaknesses the
player will have to account for to get the most out of it, the Medium Hydra is
pretty much perfectly rounded so nobody will have trouble with it.

  2.3.4  Bayonet Rifle

Sort of a dumbed down Velvet Hydra, the Bayonet Rifle offers the advantage of
increasing your melee damage. Granted, this melee damage isn't going to be
incredible - at around level 25 it boosted my initial melee attack from 41 to
52 - it is a large enough boost in damage that you'll notice it. And pair this
gun with the Power Cross and you got yourself the next Mike Tyson. If you really
don't think you need an uber rifle for long range combat, you might want to
look at this model. It meets the bare minimum requirements for your rifle and it
also gives you an official melee weapon.

The Short Barrel is (surprise) meant for short range combat. It is very
lightweight, at it's final upgrade stage it adds essentially no weight to your
weapon. It also boasts the crazy firing rate you'd associate with short range
weapons. It can mix with a high range handgun to be a hybrid mid-short range
weapon with a high fire rate. Or you can put it on a rifle to have essentially
a mid-range weapon.

    3.4  Guard N Barrel

The Guard N Barrel is a bit weaker than the Master N Barrel, especially in it's
accuracy stats, but it makes up for that by increasing Vincent's defense. At
around Level 30 it was reducing damage by 24 for me, which is fairly decent. It
isn't a bad idea to equip this barrel whenever you're doing a gun turret side
mission, as it will still reduce damage for you while you are manning a turret.
Otherwise it is up to you if you want it, you can either go with a small boost
in defense or power, it doesn't matter a whole lot either way.

    3.5  Lucky S Barrel

The Lucky S Barrel is total crap, the only reason you would want to use it is
for it's ability to double(!) the experience you gain. If you actually had to
use the Lucky Barrel to get the experience, I wouldn't recommend it because it
really IS bad. However, there is a bit of a loophole as the Lucky Barrel will
give you double experience for ANY kills you make while wielding it. That
includes melee and magic. So put this on a gun with the Manaheart and you're set
to rock the enemy and get ridiculous experience in the process.

I don't really see a point to this barrel. Power, range and accuracy suffer
rather tremendously for a very small boost in speed and for light weightedness.
I guess if you are annoyed by Vincent crawling along when he has his rifle
drawn you could try this out, but hell, you'd be much better off keeping your
Long Barrel and equipping the Gravity Floater on it.

UPDATE: A poster on the DoC board informed me that the Faerie L Barrel actually
       works pretty good if you use it to make a long distance machine gun. I
      tried it out and lo and behold it does. Give this barrel a shot on your
     machine guns.

The Materia Floater raises the power of whatever magic you are using. Obviously
don't equip this if you don't have any materia equipped. On a short gun you are
more than likely going to want this over the Sniper Scope. On a mid-range gun it
is sort of a toss-up, depending on what you want. And a long range gun should
most likely have a Sniper Scope equipped rather than this. Once it is upgraded
it powers your materia up to the third level, making it of mild importance to
upgrade.

    5.1  Power Booster

The BradyGames guide suggests this increases power by a certain percentage. The
normal Power Booster increases power by 25%, at the beta stage it increases by
60% and at the alpha stage... don't know, the BradyGames guide seems to have
another typo and power stays the same. I don't know about none of that, what I
do know is that the Power Booster increases your damage output - by a lot. It
can easily add 150 damage to your normal gun attacks, which makes a huge
difference when playing the game. Unless your gun has specific needs or is very
magic oriented you're probably best off going with the Power Booster. It should
also be placed as a high priority for upgrading.

Either when you manually reload or when you run out of ammo the Auto Reloader
fills the magazine back up so that Vincent doesn't have to go through the
reload animation. Kind of convenient, but as I've said before reloading should
be second nature to any shooter gamers, whenever you take cover or are inbetween
fights hit R2 and reload. You should rarely ever be able to exhaust an entire
clip before you've had a chance to reload it. The only guns I could recommend
this on would be the Gigant Hydra and maybe the Power Hydra Y. If you're really
having trouble with it you might place it on the Powered Cerberus too. And for
such a limited range of use it is damned expensive at 26,000 gil.

This is exactly like the Materia Floater, except it is in a different slot. And
while equipping the Materia Floater means you only miss out on the zooming
ability of the Sniper Scope, if you choose to equip the Materia Booster you're
missing out on the chance to equip several different items, including the
awesome Power Booster and Manaheart. And while the Floater and Booster's effects
CAN be cumulative, magic can only be taken to the third level. So if you've
upgraded one then it is useless to equip it alongside the other one.

And for the record, the Manaheart will add more damage than the Materia Booster
anyways, so don't ever consider equipping it over the Manaheart.

The Manaheart is an awesome piece of equipment only dedicated gamers will get
their hands on. Not only does it boost magic damage substantially but it also
slowly regenerates your MP whenever it is equipped, allowing you to quite easily
blast through entire missions with nothing but magic! The Manaheart is a no-
brainer if you are using materia, otherwise it doesn't make much sense to use it
unless you want to restore your MP while you're using a different gun. Uprading
the Manaheart will increase it's effect on magic damage and increase it's MP
recovery rate.

If you plan on doing the 46 Extra Missions the Manaheart will make your life SO
much easier, it is just about required to clear all of the missions.

The Cerberus Relief is your standard accessory, basically what you're going to
be equipping unless your weapon has some rather special needs or you want some
materia power. It decreases damage you receive by quite a bit, making the game
much easier for you. BradyGames claims it boosts Defense by +7, +11 and then +15
but those figures don't seem overly reliable. It doesn't get a whole lot
stronger through upgrades, so it's not extremely important to upgrade but never
a bad idea. The Cerberus Relief also increases your defense while manning fixed
gun emplacements, so be sure you have it on when you hop in one.

The Power Cross increases your melee damage by a rather substantial amount,
letting you whack through most enemies without trouble. Really though there are
only a few situations where you'll truly appreciate this. Non-human enemies are
very simple to kill anyways, and if you have an enemy alone you can basically
combo him into submission without giving him a chance to retaliate. Those rarer
occassions where you need to kill a DG soldier as quick and efficiently as
possible at close range it'll serve you well though. Consider putting it on your
short range weapons, but I don't recommend it on mid or long range.

Equpping the Recoil Limiter will reduce the recoil you experience when firing a
weapon. At 16,000 gil this really isn't recommended until you have the cash to
play around with your guns some more. It makes handling guns a bit easier but
guns with ridiculous recoil, like the Gigant Hydra, won't be helped hardly at
all. It seems to be best equipped with machine guns, possibly the Dueling
Griffon if you're having trouble controlling it. It will surely help you if you
want to use a mid-range machine gun, where recoil can really drive your accuracy
to hell.

Bleh. The accuracy stats are already only semi-important, and they couldn't even
give us an accessory to raise them all at once. To be honest you shouldn't
notice a major (if any) change in your accuracy with these on. You might want to
try the Medium Adjuster just to see if it fits your fancy, and I really wouldn't
recommend plopping down 15,000 gil to upgrade them.

    6.5  Fire Materia

This is your main materia, it fires a ball of fire at your target that explodes
on contact. The explosion lets you nail a small cluster of soldiers with ease,
making it good for dealing with small squads in ugly situations. Unless you do
some serious powering up it probably isn't going to kill many enemies, but it
still disables enemies for several seconds and sets them up for an easy kill.
Fire spells are very inexpensive to use MP-wise and are effective in most
situations, making it a strong choice for your magic. Once you've got the uber
magic equipment it will be able to OHKO enemies, making it by far your best
magic choice outside of boss battles.

Thunder (bah, Lightning!) materia is the most destructive, but it also eats up
a ton of MP and it only works at short range. Your first time through you'll
probably favor this materia, it can destroy a crowd of enemies the best and take
off a nice chunk of bosses HP. Once you've gotten some major magic enhancing
equipment (level 3 materia, Manasoul) though it will just be overkilling enemies
and going through your MP like crazy. It will still make one hell of a boss
killer though.

Blizzard (bah, Ice!) magic's main problem is it only hits one enemy. It's good
to use against bosses and tough enemies but it is a waste of MP to use it to
blast away a regular DG soldier. Would've been nice if having it at a higher
level gave you two or three ice blasts that homed in on enemies. Blizzard's
damage is decent, but not as high as Thunder. It homes in on enemies though,
making it helpful for taking out tricky snipers or putting the hurt on quick
bosses - though in either case it could still easily miss it's target.

After getting the cardkey and seeing the final cutscene with the Edge boy, turn
around and go back into the building you just got the cardkey from. The Model

soldiers attacking two female WRO soldiers. Directly after this battle you'll

This item is found once you've exitted the sewers, inside the elevator room. In
the adjacent corner from where you entered is the entrance to a room, you need
to duck down to get in. The Power Booster is inside.

  7.6.1  Chapter 6 - Manaheart
 *============================*


The Manaheart can only be found playing Extra Hard mode, and until you know the
trick to getting it it seems about impossible to get your hands on it. Starting
the mission off you have to take care of the four Custom Sweepers, then Vincent
moves along the path with Guard Hounds and a couple of mean ostriches attacking
him. Once you've proceeded through most of the Guard Hound territory, right
where the overhanging is with a Guard Hound perched on top of it, you'll see a
Dual Horn charging at you with a couple of Guard Hounds running from him in
front. That Dual Horn is your target, take him down before he runs out of your
sight to make him drop your Manaheart. If you've played the Extra Missions
though you know the problem is Dual Horns have several thousand HP, and this one
seems even tougher than that. Shooting the hell out of him won't work, you need
the right plan. First the recommended equipment:

Ultima Weapon         (best weapon overall)
Gale S Barrel         (best firing rate)
Materia Floater Y     (powering up materia)
Power Booster Y       (boosts damage)
Thunder/Fire Materia  (building a killchain)

That is the best setup you can have, if you don't have all of that equipment or
have it upgraded that high you can still try but don't expect it to be as easy.
Starting the mission take out the Custom Sweepers and take down the laser gate.
DO NOT KILL ANY OF THE GUARD HOUNDS. Run past them, let them chase after you. In
total you'll have over ten enemies on your tail when you get to the point where
the Dual Horn appears. Before stepping forward and making the Dual Horn appear
though, let the enemies gather around you. Activate the Dual Horn event but wait
just a couple of moments and then Thunder/Fire the hell out of all of the
enemies around you. Thunder probably works best but Fire should get the job done
too.

This should give you a killchain of 12 or so, now turn your attention to the
Dual Horn. Don't aim directly at his face as that is his strong point, but aim
a bit lower - your first shot should deal out several thousand points of
damage. You probably won't be able to take him down before he passes you, so you
have to make sure he doesn't run you over as he'll likely get away before you
regain your footing. You can sidestep to the right and take shelter right there
by the overpass until he passes, then give chase firing like a mad man.
Alternately you can keep backing up as the Dual Horn approaches, all the way
back to the clearing near the pool of water. This isn't the recommended way of
taking Dual Horn out as you will be firing at his face almost the whole time and
backing up you'll have to be maneuvering around all kinds of objects, it is
do-able though.

  7.6.2  Chapter 6 - Guard N Barrel

Most would agree that the GNB is harder to get than the Manaheart, making it a
nice trophy to have in your collection, if not a particularly great item. To get
it you must keep all 12 WRO members alive when you arrive at the base. This is
do-able on your first play through the game but don't expect it to be at all
easy. I'd recommend waiting until you've optimized Vincent with the best
equipment but by then the item isn't worth much anything so the choice is yours.
Keep in mind that throughout the mission you can check your status screen to see
if any of the soldiers died, if the counter falls to 11/12 then that means it is
restart time. There are four groups of soldiers that need to be saved, each
proving a moderate to large difficulty to protect.

1,2,3,4 - The first four soldiers appear when you first arrive at the base,
   where the helicopter battle takes place. First you have to save them from the
  DG soldiers in the area. Snipe the further ones away to keep them off of that
 damn gun emplacement, feel free to use the explosive barrels to kill them
quickly. Then turn your attention to the four on the right, charge forward to
get as much attention as possible and waste them as fast as you can. The
helicopters are true hell though. If you're doing this your first time through
don't even bother trying to do it the honest way, skip to the cheat below if you
want a chance to get past this segment. If you have the best equipment on you
stand a chance, shoot down the helicopters as soon as they appear and you
shouldn't have to deal with any missiles. The only thing you have to worry about
is the second to last wave of helicopters, where you have to take on three(!)
helicopters at once and pretty much can't avoid two of them firing four missiles
apiece at the WRO soldiers. All I can say is do your best and hope you get
lucky. The final helicopter has a ton of health so make sure you are defending
the troops or getting it's attention off of them while you are attacking it. The
three Heavy Armored Soldiers are a breeze.

The one "cheat" or "exploit" you can use to make this SO much easier is to leave
the field right before the helicopter segment. Kill all the DG soldiers and then
retreat back to the previous area, the enemy encampment. The battle will still
go by but the game's programmed so that WRO soldiers can't die unless you're
within a certain distance of them. So they'll live and you only have to deal
with the final helicopter. I find it easier to wait a moment before fleeing so
that the WRO soldiers run across the field and take their normal positions,
otherwise they'll stay there at the entrance which will be EXACTLY where the
final chopper is facing when you enter, which makes things damn ugly.


5,6,7 - Once on the bridge you will notice two large tower structures a bit
   further down. As long as you stay on this side of those two towers you're
  safe, so kill all the enemies and take care of everything else before crossing
 them. Once past the towers move forward slowly, taking care of any enemies you
can find. Once you hear the WRO soldiers ahead of you, sprint forward with guns
blazing. There are two snipers above and a number of regular soldiers on the
ground. Gun down any of the soldiers that pose an immediate threat and then take
down the deadly snipers as fast as possible. Then mop up the rest. If you fail
here you have to start all over and do the helicopter segment again, so be
merciless.


8 - Very obnoxious. As soon as you are done with the previous three WRO members
   you will take a door into a narrow corridor. Inside there are four DG
  soldier surrounding a WRO member all shooting at him. You can't use magic as
 there is an explosive barrel right next to them, so you have to get in close
for this one. Run forward right away and take a couple of careful shots so that
you at least eliminate the closest DG soldier before you get to them. Approach
them with a dash, melee, melee combo and hope that you stun all of the
remaining DG soldiers with it. Then just mop them up.


9,10,11,12 - After the Black Widow fight you will be inside the main building.
    Going down the corridor the door opens up to a major firefight with the WRO
   backed up to the wall you just emerged from. To your left is a DG soldier
  sporting a bazooka, take him down first as he is the biggest danger. Then
 obliterate the DG soldiers with magic, this is your last real battle in the
chapter anyways. If you mess up here no worries, you can restart right at this
point so you can try again and again.


After saving the last four you will proceed further and get in a couple more
small skirmishes. Then you'll head back downstairs, the same area as from
Chapter 4. Directly to the left when you first enter the area is a little side
corridor which is normally empty, but should contain the Guard N Barrel if you
played guardian angel for all 12 WRO members. Congratulations!

These items are dropped seemingly randomly during the firefights with regular
DG soldiers, but don't start appearing in any noticeable quantity until Chapter
8 and on.


 Ultima Weapon
 ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
Once in the second half of Chapter 8 (after the boss battle with the group of DG
Shrikes) the Model Gun will become upgradeable. 250,000 gil in upgrades will net
you the ultimate gun.

 Blast Machine Gun

A fair ways into the chapter you'll reach the ruins of a massive DG city. At the
end of the first area of this city will be stairs to your left leading to the
next area. Past that will be an enclosed area with a single item. Beware a
fairly easy battle awaits when you try to leave the area.


 Faerie L Barrel
 ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
In the second area, to the right of the spot where the stationary turret is
located, is a fire escape with two boxes on top of it. The Faerie L Barrel is in
the one on the top, but in order to knock it to the ground you need to shoot the
bottom box, not the one it is in on top.


 Bayonet Rifle
 ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
During the optional side mission involving finding all of the cardkeys and
taking down all of the laser barriers, the Bayonet Rifle is behind one of the
barriers. It is by the gun turret in the area, on the small outlook that is
reached after passing through the sewers.


 Lucky S Barrel
 ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
In the second sewer area the Lucky S Barrel is stuck behind seven(!) laser
barriers. A crude description of seven keycard locations is provided, seek out
another FAQ for elaboration or to get ALL the items in this side mission.

1. Shoot rusty pipe in the first area that mission is activated.
2. Deactivate barrier in first area that has two more cardkeys.
3. Shoot explosive on ceiling in the first sewer area.
4. Shoot crate off of southern ledge from outlook, cardkey inside.
5. Climbing out of second sewer area, hanging in air by ladder.
6. Lying behind the shop past the second sewer area.
7. Inside a crate nearby the shop.
